It has been a little bit since I have dived into an author Warren novel and this one really took me on a ride, mushing with dogs, helicopters, and planes. This story took place in the beautiful backdrop of Alaska, it's snowstorms and the dangers of its wildlife. I don't know if I will ever physically visit, but I feel like I did get a glimpse of Alaska in the book.
This was a story fraught with danger of nature and even humankind. It is based around the oldest Kingston triplet, Dodge, who has come back to help out his father after his father's accident. Dodge however never wanted to come back home after having his heart broken by his girlfriend, brother, and father. Sometimes though, as Dodge finds out, there is much more to the story then at first seems and it is not always best to run away without making amends. But Dodge is a bit hardheaded, even after serving in the military and will eventually learn his lesson.
Echo, his ex-girlfriend, has pretty much stayed put even though she had big dreams. Her father needed her, and she did not feel like she could leave him like her mother left them. Echo is also carrying some scars from the past along with still trying to get over Dodge.
These two find out just how much they are needed by one another and others. Forgiveness and God's providential care play big themes and so do the animals. I enjoyed the dogs and bears very much.
I was provided a copy of this novel by Revell through Interviews and Reviews. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
Sunrise, by Susan May Warren is one of my most favorite things: a brilliant first book in a new series by one of my go-to writers.
I love when stories take me to places I’ve never been, so this trip to Alaska is extra interesting for me because it’s the only state I’ve never visited (yet). When Dodge King’s father is badly wounded in a plane crash, Dodge returns to run the ranch. This is a decade after he left to join the military, never wanting to look back. Dodge’s heart was smashed when the girl of his dreams, Echo, rejected his proposal.
Echo never planned on staying on the homestead with her father. But her mom abandoned them, and then Dodge left. So her plans for a degree changed, along with her ambition to run the Iditarod race. Suddenly, she’s faced with the worst mistake she’s ever made.
As circumstances throw Echo and Dodge together, both must face their feelings, their hopes for the future and decide who they want to be. The result is a stunning book. I read it fast, then slowed down in the last third because I didn’t want it to end.
As ever with a Warren book, the characters leap to life, the setting plays a massive role and the action is fast paced and compelling. Cannot wait for book two…

Susan May Warren has given us a resounding hit in her newest book, Sunrise. Set in the wilds of Alaska, we have the makings of a fantastic new series full of danger, tension, high energy, and romance. But we also have Warren’s classic ability to weave spiritual truths immersed in emotional depth. With characters that embed themselves into your soul and a plot that holds you riveted, this is not a story to ignore! I was entranced from start to finish. And with that cliffhanger of an ending, I will be itching to read the sequel!
I received this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
I will say this as if you're a friend and I’m telling you my thoughts. I really enjoyed this book and this author. I feel like every time I read anything from her she has a way of putting you right there in the middle and watching it all play out in front of you. There was So much pain between Echo and Dodge as well as pain in their personal lives they needed to work through. But sometimes working towards a common goal that seems to throw you together may help you see things differently. The author truly had me staying up late just to finish this book and see where she took me on the journey next. Overall this book is so worth the read and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for more of these characters.
If you like an action packed, page turning read, Susan May Warren is your author to check out. This new series is set in the rugged, wild beauty of the Alaskan elements in the shadow of Denali, in small town Copper Mountain. Dodge Kingston is home because his father crashed his plane and needs some help. He doesn't have great memories of his last days home. It has been ten years since Dodge enlisted in the Air Force after a huge fight with his brother Colt over a night of partying with Dodge's girlfriend Echo. He always felt his dad took Colt's side, so he has some bitterness to deal with. Now, Dodge is between careers. After being shot down in Afghanistan, he spent time at Walter Reed, has recovered, ready for a new job, maybe working Air Rescue out of Anchorage but first he has to take care of his father. Dodge and Colt are two parts of a set of triplets with a sister Leake. Ranger is the third part and their mom died of cancer. Echo has her own regrets but when she needs help, Dodge is quick to her rescue. Dodge is filling in for his dad, flying to help people in need of supplies or rescue. The story revolves around how the characters deal with the dangerous elements and wildlife of the harsh Alaskan winter. Dodge and Echo both have issues to deal with if they want to rekindle their relationship, but they also have family problems to deal with. In particular, forgiveness is at the forefront. Forgiveness is for the soul of the one forgiving. I am looking forward to reading the stories of the brothers in the upcoming books. Another winner for SMW.
I received a complimentary ARC from Revell Publishing and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed for mine only.
What a read. I could feel the biting cold from head right down to my socked toes in Sunrise (Sky King Ranch #1) by Susan May Warren. I was right there with Dodge and Echo. What a heart moving story that left me with a new perspective on God’s view just as it did Dodge and Echo.
This plot was so solid pulling me in thinking I knew how it would all play out. Yet just when I thought I knew what was happening next, bang a twist came into play. Hard to put down doesn’t even begin to describe this novel. Riveting rollercoaster ride read only on planes, choppers, dog sleds and snow machines.
A second chance romance along with a second chance at connecting with family, friends, and community. I always heart it was none of my business what people said or thought about me but really Dodge needed to get out of his head and hear what people actually said. Not at all like his own self-incriminations. Turn to God and hears what He says.
I love the way this author brings God into the story in a natural, honest, and uplifting way. Wow, just Wow!
The publisher through Net Galley provided a digital ARC. I have voluntarily decided to read and review, giving my personal opinions and thoughts.
It’s so easy to get caught up in the beauty of Alaska, but then Warren’s characters go out into the wild to rescue each other or save animals and reality sets in. Alaska is amazing but the people who live there are brave and a little crazy. Echo and Dodge have history, of course, but being young and naive things didn’t go as planned. Ten years later and Dodge returns to begin a new chapter. He and his brothers, the Kingston Triplets, each entered a different branch of the military. Through those experiences they have met other characters of Warrens, from the other series. While I haven’t read all of her books it brings a little joy to have cameos from other books. I’m very excited to read about the other brothers, Ranger and Colt. This book makes you think you are right there with Echo and Dodge, with the bears and snowy landscape. Get ready to escape to Alaska. I’m always thrilled to receive an early copy from Warren, this review was given voluntarily.
** “The circumstances of our lives aren’t just random, Dodge. There is no such thing as chance when we’re in the hands of God. And that’s a good thing, because it means that we’re part of something bigger, something that has an eternal purpose.” **
Susan May Warren once again delivers another thrilling novel that focuses on family, loyalty, love and forgiveness in “Sunrise,” the first in her new Sky King Ranch series.
After his father is injured in a plane crash, pilot Dodge Kingston returns to his family’s ranch in Alaska to get his father back on his feet. After a series of harrowing events, he keeps bumping into Echo Yazzie, the woman who broke his heart 10 years ago. But as they are forced to work together to find a missing friend and the source of other nefarious events occuring, they find themselves once again drawn to each other.
A story about facing the dangers of both Alaska and the heart, “Sunrise” is a great romantic thriller that is filled with enough twists and turns to delight the reader, as well as moments to get the heart fluttering. Warren does a great job of creating equally lovable as well as loathable characters, including a whole cast of adorable animals.
She also fills “Sunrise” with tons of great themes, including the destructive power of anger and how it is not good to hold on to it (“Anger is like a virus. It steals hope, tells you lies, makes you vulnerable to more anger. It keeps burrowing deeper until it burns into your soul. But forgiveness is the cure. It’s how you start to heal”); the concept of “There’s no sunrise of hope here”; when forgiveness seems out of reach; finding forgiveness for yourself as well as others; overcoming past trauma; having an eternal purpose; allowing God to work His will; you cannot outrun God’s love; and the Lord Himself watches over you.
Fans of Warren will love to see references to old friends found in her other works. Those who enjoy Irene Hannon, Lynette Eason and Carrie Stuart Parks will love “Sunrise.”
Five stars out of five.
Revell provided this complimentary copy through NetGalley for my honest, unbiased review.
Having left in a hurry after his dad chose his triplet Colt over him, Dodge never intended to return - but when his dad's in an accident, he finds himself unable to stay away. Then he discovers that he can't just head straight out again as he'd intended - his dad needs him to take over his bush pilot run until he's on his feet again. And that means facing the demons he'd run from - and Echo, the girl he left. When Echo's friend goes missing in the bush, she goes out hunting for her. But there are more dangers out there than even she realises - will Dodge be able to get to her in time? And when he finally works out what he really wants in life, will it be too late?
I don't think this author's ever produced a 'dud' yet as far as I'm concerned, and this looks like the start of an exciting new series. As is typical of this author, the romance is fully resolved in this book (I don't think that counts as a spoiler, really!), but there are various hints of something going on behind the scenes that presumably will be built into a fuller picture and resolved in future books. And for what it's worth, I don't think I've ever come across a worse ending line... Nevertheless, I loved the way that Dodge and Echo's pasts were gradually unfolded, and the way they slowly built their relationship into something that could last. All in all, it's really well written and held my attention throughout (once I increased the print size - it felt much smaller than most books I read, for some reason?), and I'm really looking forward to books 2 and 3. Highly recommended.
Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.
Is this cover not the prettiest?!?!?! Like seriously!!! Stunning! And the story inside is just as good!
One thing I love about Susan May Warren’s writing is the way she ties all her series together and weaves old characters through her new stories. And she’s gone above and beyond in this one! She’s tied in 3 different series! The MCs for this new series are Larke Kingston’s brothers (as in Larke from Some Like It Hot from the Summer of the Burning Sky series), and the story is set in the same Alaskan town as that series. Which also happens to be the hometown of Orion from the Global SAR series, so his siblings feature as well!! And then, for good measure, she’s tied in the Montana Marshalls as well!! So needless to say, being familiar with all these other series definitely adds value to the book!! You don’t have to have read them to enjoy it though!
I loved Dodge and Echo’s story! They’re such unique and different characters & their story is my favourite trope - the second chance romance! So win! And Dodge is beautifully flawed and I loved journeying with him through his struggles… also did I mention he’s a triplet?! And the triplets have a complex history and lots of baggage to unpack. And I can’t wait for Ranger and Colt’s stories now! (And yes, the triplets are named after cars 😂)
Susan May Warren is always a quick, easy read with plenty of action and plenty of romance! And this just might be one of my favourites of hers!
Loved it! Definitely recommend!
Thanks so much @revellbooks and @netgalley for the ARC. I was only required to provide an honest review in return, and here it is!
An enjoyable book by an excellent author. When I read this author's book, I know it will always have the right combination of adventure, romance and life lessons.
Echo and Dodge have been in each others lives since they were kids, and apart from an embarrassing episode when they were teenagers, they have gone on to make their mark in the world, separately. Unfortunately, there are some not-nice people who are wrecking havoc with their part of the world and this can't continue.
I have never been to Alaska but I certainly want to go there now! I had to look up various terms so I certainly got an education :) It does sound like a magical place, to this Australian!
Lovely story with all the elements that I appreciate in a decent read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Revell.
Sunrise, by Susan May Warren, introduces her latest series, Sky King Ranch. After 10 years away, Pilot Dodge Kingston returns to his family’s home in Alaska. His father was injured in a plane crash and he cannot stay away. When Dodge gets called to rescue Echo, the woman he left behind, he knows this is definitely not the reason he returned to Alaska!
Now that Dodge and Echo have met face to face you have no idea which direction they will go now. Before they can figure out what is going on with their relationship, Hodge and Echo find themselves on a hunt for her best friend in the midst of a blizzard!
You will not believe what all they are able to rescue by the end of this tale!
I cannot say how much I have enjoyed Sunrise by Susan Mae Warren. It has all the elements in it that keep me reading and not wanting for the book to end. Action, romance, intrigue, and beautiful descriptions of a land that I will never see.
The author is one of my favorite. I love how she sprinkles in quotes that you will want to remember such as “forgiveness isn’t for the person you are forgiving, it is for yourself. It’s what you do to be set free.” Another one, “ We don’t know God protects us, how He is there for us but He is. We live our life seeing only our perspective—seeing our circumstances and judging God by what happen to us. But what if we judged God by what didn’t happen to us? What if we started asking…God, what is your view? What did you protect me from?” These quotes make you stop and reread and dwell on them.
Sunrise is the second in a series but is a stand alone book. You will meet Echo and Dodge who have known each other most of their lives and had loved each other in their teenage years. But an incident tore them apart and a decade before their paths crossed again. Both had matured and gone on with their lives. Dodge had served in the military and Echo stayed and being a guide for the Alaskan wilderness. Together they try to rekindle the romance while they are trying to rescue a friend in the vast wilderness. The author has done her homework because you interesting details throughout the book about sled dogs, mushing, grizzly bears and the dangers that await you on the Alaskan trails.
Love this book and would highly recommend it. I received a copy of Sunrise from the publisher through Netgalley, but all opinions are my own.
This book is one of the best books that I have read in the last year. It took me a little bit of time to get into it (a couple of chapters), but then I didn't want to put it down. I received a free copy of this ebook from the publisher. This is my honest and voluntarily given review. This book not only contains a riveting mystery, but also gives glimpses of life in Alaska. I love that the story is told from both Dodge's and Echo's point of view and that we get to know them before we find out why they broke up years ago. The second chance romance is a bonus on top of an enthralling story. The suspense gets intense at times and I didn't want to put it down. Being set in Alaska adds to the story. I also love the spiritual wisdom about forgiveness and love. This is a terrific read.
Such a fantastic adventure filled with adrenaline, tender romance of a second chance love, faith-bolstering wisdom, and redemption and forgiveness after a long drought of anger and bitterness. I could not put the book down once I started it. I’ve never flown a plane/chopper, never worked with dogs, never met a wild grizzly bear, and never even visited Alaska but felt like I’ve done all these and more after being ensconced in Echo and Dodge’s world. I’m suspecting that the series will follow Dodge’s two brothers but I’m also hoping it will expand to include more of the uniquely wonderful secondary characters I’ve met along the way in Copper Mountain.
Echo is a brave but wounded soul, dragged down by regret and darkness even as she makes a living in the Alaskan wilderness as a guide and protector of wild animals. Dodge is a loyal, steadfast Purple Heart earning former Air Force pilot who also has plenty of regrets but realizes his potential and dream and desperate need to forgive as he comes home and faces his past and future head on. I do so enjoy second chance romance and this one will remain one of my favorites. Mixed in with the romance is Echo and Dodge working to rescue hurt and needy people from snowy and stormy mountain, surviving bear attacks and other natural hazards, outsmarting some evil men with fast-paced action and plenty of suspense. And if that’s not enough, there is a mystery woman whose identity has yet to be revealed…
If you’re looking for a great book with unforgettable characters and setting, heart-pounding action and suspense, heart-filling spiritual wisdom, and heart-melting romance, look no further. I’m finishing out 2021 with a bam!
I received the book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.
Get ready to meet the handsome Kingston brothers in Susan May Warren’s new Sky King Ranch series. These triplets are the younger brothers of Larke Kingston, who longtime readers may remember from the Summer of the Burning Sky series. This is the perfect time for anyone who has never read any of Susan May Warren’s books to jump right in with book one of this new series. Sunrise ends with unanswered questions that leave the reader eagerly anticipating book two of the series (Sunburst).
Everything I love about Susan May Warren’s books is evident in Sunrise…a strong, handsome hero with a military background, fast-paced action filled with danger, family drama, and a swoony romance. The publisher classifies it as contemporary romance, but it is so much more than your typical contemporary romance. Sunrise made my top 10 list of 2021 (since I was blessed with the opportunity to read an advanced copy prior to its release).
As readers follow the Kingston triplets throughout the series, it will be fun to see who they pick as their favorite Kingston brother. Sunrise is highly recommended for readers of action filled contemporary romance.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine.
Dodge Kingston is the second born and oldest of the triplets born to Barry and Cee Kingston. He fled Copper Mountain a decade before when his best friend, Echo Yazzie, declined his proposal, and those he trusted betrayed him.
He comes back to Sky King Ranch when his older sister calls to tell him their dad has been injured in a plane crash. In an attempt to help he’s forced back in to the cockpit when he hears his life long love, Echo, is injured and needs rescued.
I really enjoyed this novel. In the beginning I was feeling bogged down in the details but as the story continued I came to appreciate the descriptions as a character of this engaging story. The details are so descriptive and vivid the reader can’t help but feel like they’re experiencing Alaska right alongside the characters. Fans of Susan May Warren will flock to this new story and subsequent series.
As one who loves bears I appreciated the inclusion of Elsa and George’s journey.
Thank you NetGalley and Revell for the opportunity to review this book. It’s one for the keeper self for sure.
Sunrise by Susan May Warren is a heart pounding thriller that will keep your attention throughout. Set in a remote part of Alaska, this story is all about Dodge and Echo who are reunited after a long absence. The backstories of each family are full of interesting parts and they are thrown together to tackle many hardships in the Alaska terrain, including a possible poacher. So much to love about this book with its fascinating plot and interesting details about Alaska. However, as with all books by this author, the characters and their depth steal the show, making this a book that starts a must read series. I highly recommend this book. I received a digital copy of this book from the author with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.
When Dodge Kingston received the call that his Dad had been in a plane crash, he went home. He was not sure why, he had not been home since he left 10 years ago, for good reason, but here he was, pacing the hallway. Ten years is a long time to stay away from his hometown but he felt he had no choice. Echo Yazzie, his girlfriend at the time, had said "no" when he proposed and then his brother Colt took advantage of the situation and swooped in to "console" ( yes she did say no to Dodge) Echo and get a kiss. Dodge was so upset, that he put Colt in the hospital and his Dad left him in jail for a week. When he was released Dodge went and signed up with the military.
Echo Yazzie was in town looking for her Dad and while she was looking she could have sworn she saw Dodge Kingston, the man her heart never forgot. She had turned down his proposal 10 years ago and every once in a while she still wonders how her life would be different if she had said, "yes'. But he had not been back since then. She knew his Dad had been in the plane crash but she would have heard if Dodge was back.
While Echo and her friend Peyton are in the bush checking cameras that Peyton had set up for watching the wolves she is studying, Echo had tied her dog sled team outside. When the dogs started barking they became increasingly agitated and Echo went outside to check, then she saw it, a bear. One of her dogs ( Holly)had been attacked by it and Echo grabbed up Holly( the dog) and took her inside and the bear wandered off. Peyton put in a call for a rescue, when rescue arrived Echo was very surprised when it was Dodge that hopped out. She was right. Echo had seen him in town. And he looked good.
Faith, family, love and redemption.
This was such a good story and I eagerly await the next one in the series. Thank you Susan May Warren for allowing me to participate!
Teenage love turns into adult love after a ten year gap and some hardships, in “Sunrise”, by Susan May Warren (Revell), a story about forgiveness, redemption and letting go of hurt and resentment.
The first in a new series (Sky King Ranch), “Sunrise” presents intense, tortured characters fighting and trying to find themselves and dealing with conflicting emotions in the marvelous, majestic setting of Alaska.
Dodge and Echo were so good together, both as adolescents and adults and as best friends and lovers. The pain and longing between these two are as palpable as are the friendship and their deep, solid connection.
I liked the intense characters and their caring nature, too; Dodge’s protectiveness and fierceness and Echo’s independence and self-reliance are very attractive.
I felt Dodge nursing the wound for 10 years was a bit too much, and his resentment somehow artificially expanded.
Some aspects of Echo and Effie’s separation were also a bit hard for me to understand.
Alaska’s “stark beauty” and the cast of secondary characters in “Sunrise” show lots of promise for future stories in this new series.
