What a beautiful book! I love wordless picture books and this is definitely a keeper. Beautiful, evocative illustrations, and an exciting journey!
A delightful wordless picture books about the journey of a maple seed! I think this book would appeal to children with its gentle story and beautiful images.
I received an electronic copy from Owlkids Books through NetGalley.
This wordless picture book takes readers on a journey with a maple tree seed. They watch from the moment it falls off the tree until it becomes a new maple tree. The artwork captures the pure joy as so many humans and animals move the seed on along the journey. Readers see children use their imagination to create with it. Then they see a dog step on it as it walks and press it into the earth. Seasons pass and the tree sprouts. This again brings joy to others when they see it.
Lovely and detailed illustrations tell the story.
It would be a plus if this title was available in a board book format. The movement in this book was wonderful. You could almost hear and feel the things going on in this book. I could hear the stories coming from this book. Loved it.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. This book is a lovely wordless book nature-type book.
Follow the journey of a maple seed ("helicopters" in my neck of the woods) as it floats and whirls through several different adventures and settings before eventually fulfilling its purpose and starting the life cycle of the tree anew. There is no text in this book--the story is entirely told through frames of soft and detailed drawings presented comic book-style. Kids will have the freedom to create their own narrative to follow the pictures, which can spark lots of creative thinking! This would be especially great for neuroatypical kids as they can experience the book on their own terms. This would be best for one-on-one readings with an adult reading partner who can engage with the reader about their story and prompt or ask questions as appropriate.
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!
This book is very sweet and reminds me of my childhood. Maple tree seeds have many different names...whirligigs, helicopters...but I remember playing with them as a child and they were like finding gold! This book, though it has no words, brings back that nostalgic feeling of playing with these seeds outside and watching the seed fall and carried with the wind.
I do like this book, and I will consider purchasing it for my own collection. However, I teach in Florida and a lot of these students wouldn't be able to relate to it, so most likely I won't keep it in my classroom.
Thank you for the ARC copy!
This is a delightful wordless picture book that shows what happens to a maple key from the time it drops from the tree, through its flight to the ground, and finally how it begins to grow into a new tree. The illustrations are lovely, and the book would be a wonderful way to talk about the life cycle of a tree with young children. I recommend this book for any home or classroom library.
A lovely pictorial story that perfectly evokes the changing of the seasons in northern North America, with animals, plants, and people.
What a beautiful picture book! I would love to add this lovely wordless story to our collection of nature books, especially since there are lots of maple trees in our neighborhood to observe and learn more about.
Wordless picture book that illustrates the journey of a maple seed pod and all the iterations of life its form takes. This would make a great book for storytime sharing. Strengthens print motivation and awareness. Develops a strong narrative skill in emerging readers. At the end of the book there is a note with facts about the maple seed.
Thank you to the Owlkids Books and NetGalley for the advanced electronic review copy of this book. This wonderful, wordless book explores the joys of being in nature, playing with leaves, and enjoying the small things in life. It’s a feel good book that children would enjoy.
Whirl is one of my favorite kinds of book--wordless or perhaps it is better to say without alphabetic text because Whirl takes a story that is old as time and turns it into an extraordinary work of art. I can't wait to share this with young people. An excellent book for what our region calls "helicopter" season.
Giving children the freedom to be the author with the assist of the professionals is so magical. I do not know if that was the intent of the book but that is how I saw it. It is beautifully done, flows great and has a strong message. I would love to see this used in a lesson for inspiring kids to tell the story they see and see the real magic happen.
This wordless picture book is my childhood! I loved playing with whirligigs and trying to come up with new ways to make them fly. I think kids will enjoy this beautifully illustrated book and hopefully, they will get a few ideas for what to do with their own whirligigs.
Whirl! is a wordless picture book that captures the changing of the seasons and the cycles of life as we follow a whirligig across time. I really loved the nature scenes most of all, watching the color palettes change to reflect the seasons and the ways that animals interact with the seed. There is one picture in particular, of two birds fighting at a nest, that I could see come to life in my mind!
I did like the inclusion of many different families. It’s not always easy to find diverse families in books about nature, but there were families with different skin tones and families with two moms.
This book will be a great addition for those preschoolers who like to explore nature, make their own stories, and think creatively about the world around them.
Whirl is a wordless picture book about the life cycle of what we used to call "whirligigs" which are the seeds of maple trees. It follows the path of some whirligigs as they travel through a city, become part of an artwork, are used as toys, and eventually make it to the forest and grow into a new, baby tree. Facts about maple seeds are included at the end. Children will enjoy searching for the whirligig in each picture.
This beautifully illustrated book follows the life cycle of a maple seed as it helicopters to the ground, then is picked up, whirled about, transferred to other parts of the forest by animals until it is planted and becomes a tree. The illustrations are whimsical and evoke the fun and joy of watching the seeds fall.
The children and families depicted are diverse, and the story follows them along with the seed on its journey. This would be wonderful to share with young children, or to be used as a story starter to encourage young children to write the story as they see it. Wordless picture books also work so well for children who are working on expressive language skills.
I highly recommend this beautiful book for all ages.
I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I never quite get the purpose of books with no words. The pictures in this were good and told the story in a manner that made sense. I guess if you are a fan of wordless books, you would enjoy it.
This was very beautiful!! A book without any word, but so emotional and a very feel good story! I love it very much!
