Fortin provides a great starting point for any parent looking to introduce their children to the art of gardening. The book is laid out for all twelve months and what the child should expect during each month. It would be perfect to read each month during the actual month and work through the process together. For example, during January parent and child could begin planning what they will plant together. It is delightful and beautifully illustrated. Start a love for gardening young with this book!
This is a lovely book. The illustrations are colourful; perfect for story time or bedtime. I would recommend this as well for teachers doing a unit on gardening, springtime, outdoor activities and/or seasons.
I thought this was such a beautiful picture book about a young girl's journey to planting her vegetable garden with her mother. How it starts at the beginning of the year in January where she starts thinking and planning and in each month she explains what she does and how her garden is doing all the way up to December. I think this would be a great picture book for any children interested in gardens and growing things.
My Delicious Garden is a brightly illustrated ode to a year of gardening from the perspective of a child. Featuring a diverse family and their friends, we follow along as a young girl plans, plants, cares for, and harvests her vegetable garden. The garden year culminates with a feast in December, where the family serves preserved foods from their summer garden. Excellent for preschoolers and kids in early elementary. Whether your dreaming of gardens in the winter or playing in the dirt, this book is an excellent introduction and celebration of the joys of gardening.
This is a wonderful children's book about gardening. Teachers and parents can use it to teach kids about growing their own food.
Oh, how I adore this book! It captures the joy of gardening through the eyes of a child nevertheless! I love the brilliant drawings. The book starts off with the month of January and weaves all the way through to December and illustrates how when you are growing food as a gardener the fruits of your labor are year long!
The joy that is captured by describing the first tangy rhubarb pushing through the soil all the way to enjoying preserved food at Christmas from the fruits of their labors had me smiling throughout. When you grow food the immense pleasure, the joy, and the reward is so captured in this book that I'd place it as one of my favorite children's books of all time and that does say a lot!
An absolute delight!
I would like to thank NetGalley, the publisher, Owlkids Books, and the author and illustrator for the opportunity and joy to read and review 'My Delicious Garden' by Anne-Marie Fortin illustrated by Julien Castanie.
This colorfully illustrated children’s book tells the story of a family’s garden over the course of a year. Month by month children will see how a garden goes from planning to planting to harvesting and to enjoying the garden’s bounty all year long. Hopefully, this will inspire kids (who have the space) to get out there and plan their own gardens.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Owlkids Press for this title. All opinions are my own.
Absolutely loved this little book! I loved that it takes you through what gardening means throughout the whole year, but in a way fit for kids to understand. Such a cute read and the kids loved this one! I guess we'll be starting a garden too!
Thank you to the Owlkids Books and NetGalley for the advanced electronic review copy of this great book. This book is about a girl who loves gardening and as the year progresses, she goes from planning her garden to planting, to watering, to harvesting — all the while enjoying the process. This is a great book to read in a science class when learning about the life cycle of plants and what task is best to be done at which particular time. It could easily be combined with planting and cultivating a school garden.
The book follows a little gardener as she goes through each month of the year. We started from January, when she planned what her family's garden would look like. She went on to take care of the garden in the following months, harvested the vegetables, and also enjoyed them at the dining table. It's a lovely book to encourage kids to start a garden and learn about where their food comes from!
An informational picture book told in a diary format of a girl preparing, planting, growing, and sowing a garden. The text is simple enough, young listeners will engage with the story, and it has enough substance that older readers will find a lot to enjoy. The family presents as a diverse group.
My Delicious Garden is a fun and appealing illustrated children's book on the joys of growing food and gardening. Originally published in French in 2020, this English language translation is due out 15th March 2022 from Owlkids Books. It's 24 pages and will be available in hardcover format.
This is such a simple, appealing book arranged chronologically through the gardening calendar year with a little girl thinking about, planning, planting, and caring for her own garden. The non-rhyming text by Anne-Marie Fortin is very simple and appropriate for youngsters or to be read to youngsters by a caregiver. The illustrations by Julien Castanié are whimsically simple but deceptively intricate with small insects and other details which invite a closer look.
There are some details which aren't directly referenced in the text, but which I was pleased to note. The characters in the book are drawn from a wide variety of ethnicities. Representation is important and it's refreshing to see here as well. The other thing is that the youngster in the story refers to her "mothers" a couple times in the text. She seems to have a well balanced supportive home life, and she also seems to have two moms. It's not a major point in the story, but it is there and is positively portrayed.
Five stars. This is a sweet and appealing story and will likely become a firm favorite.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. A little girl is thinking about what she wants to plant in her garden the following year. She plans out what she wants to do and then has a delicious garden in the summer.
This book had me aching to plan my own garden! As I read this in the cold of January, it stirred up all my love for green things and good soil. A delightful month-by-month book about what it takes to have a garden, and all the joys you gain from it. Spring can't come too early, but I'm making my plan now, thanks to this book!
Absolutely loving this book! My Delicious garden maybe a fictional story but with factual concept. I love how the story is structured around the year, which gives the beginning gardeners an idea on when to start gardening. the narrator goes in detail on how long it takes each plants grows, reporting, and many gardening tips. This book is ideal to teach reader who loves gardening. Suitable for children aged 8 -12
This is a great picture book for slightly older kids. I loved how it was structured around an entire year, from planning the garden to sowing to growing to harvesting, enjoying, and canning for the winter. The art is lovely and the language is still simple enough for kids to enjoy.
This is a wonderful look at gardening through the seasons and what will prosper during each month/season. I liked how we see how sustainable gardening is and how anyone can be successful at it. I liked the illustrations, they were very vivid and bright. A fun book for children who are interested in gardening.
Thanks NetGalley for this ARC!
This was a cute book about a little girl and her moms tending to their garden year-round. It goes month-by-month and shows how they plan, plant, grow, harvest, prepare, and eat their bounty. There were some funny moments (see: the pumpkin head), and I enjoyed it. The characters were also diverse and inclusive, which I always love. The illustrations were simple and vibrant.
