This threw you right into a quick moving well established story. The characters are in love with each other but yet don’t know exactly who each other are due to circumstances. It has lots of twists and turns.
I just absolutely had so much fun and I was so sad to turn the last page. I can’t wait to read more wonderful stories from this author.
If you like vampires and romance this is the book for you! Throw in some action and 1 hunky vampire and u have a fun read.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own
An edge of your seat, emotionally thrilling, action packed journey from beginning to end. Really enjoyed this action packed and thrilling adventure filled with witty and exciting charters, heart racing twists and undeniable passion.
I gotta admit that I may not have read all the books that would make me appreciate this one as much as I could. That being said, I enjoyed it and was able to follow the larger implications without issue.
Rey has stationed herself inside the staff for the evil vampire, Umbra. She’s trying to find the cure for the poison that Elias (in his human disguise) has been infected with. Her love for his human parts doesn’t give him a free pass as the terrifying vampire that she categorizes him as, but it’s a good start for their romance. After some steps forward, Elias is driven to save Rey from the evil castle, but there are some barriers. First, Rey is anti-vampire, so Elias takes steps to mask that part of him, while still being awesome and powerful. Second, Umbra is playing the long game, so has a lot of moving pieces on the chessboard. Lucky for us, Elias is a master strategist.
One of the great parts of this book was the strategy. I’m all for smutty good romance (and that’s a part of it), but watching the action and plans play out was just as fun. There’s a lot of players, but it was easy to keep track of the good vs bad. The wonderfully good and unique characters that end up aiding Elias in the end are just… perfection. I wish I had spent more time with all of them before the end, but their heroics didn’t go unrecognized. The ending here feels like a series/world ender, but here’s hoping we get to see some familiar faces in possible spin-offs.
Solid vampire good vs evil with a strong, and interesting, cast of characters - quite a bit of adventure, and some brewing heat that does get there as multiple and intertwined storylines climax to a satisfying resolution. Definitely worth the read.
Overall I found Night's Bliss to be an intriguing story. Good vampire elements in the book. The writing and dialogue helped move the story along fairly quickly.
This was apparently not the first in a series, but can be read as a standalone. I found myself frustrated with this information, as I'm one of those types that liked to read things in order to have the context, as in most cases, like this, you seem to miss something. I wish it had been more clear. But getting past that eventually was fine, I just had a difficult time enjoying the book, or getting into it. Maybe if would have been easier if i had read the others first, or maybe i just can't get into this author's work in general, i don't know. This is my first book by her. I generally love vampire romance, and the premise was interesting, so hot sure. It was not poorly written or anything, so just a personal preference. #netgalley #nightsbliss
I didn’t know what to expect when I went into Night Bliss. It’s not the first book in the series and it’s been a while since I read a vampire romance. The world Mary Hughes built is unique and I enjoyed unfolding the mystery.
A woman who hates everything vampires stand for and the guy who’s going to change everything.
I’d recommend starting at the beginning of the series. When I first started reading this I was unsure if I’d missed something but it unfolds fast.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A good paranormal romance, gripping and highly entertaining. It's been quite some time since I read a vampire romance and I'm happy they are back.
This one is good, loved the world building and the characters.
Can't wait to read the next in this series.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Wow, Mary Hughes gave us every twist and turn that you could possibly imagine. But she also put in our little life lessons along the way which is what always makes me want to read a Mary Hughes book … what lessons is she teaching us this time? Trust, instincts, and vulnerability. But what truly made me happy was this was Kai Elias’ HEA.
I loved watching Elias and Rey fall in love. As they started to trust each other and their instincts, their love grew … even though they both tried to deny it. But it would take an enemy from the past to make them both see what they were missing, who the Shadow Lord really was and why he was trying to wreck destruction on the Ancients and Vampire community. In the end, with a little help of all our Meier’s Corners favorites, the truth was revealed and good overcame evil.
I was a little surprised with the ending, the accolades for our Kai Elias. Is this the end of our visits to Meier’s Corners or will Mary be gracing us with more characters and more stories set in this wonderful fictional town? Ani maybe?
I so enjoy reading Mary Hughes. Her characters are fun yet serious. She knows just when you need a little laugh to ease up on some of the tension in the story. And, she definitely knows how to write a story filled with love and happiness. Like I said in the beginning though, what I most look forward to are her life lessons. There was a big trust issue in Night’s Bliss along with both main characters having low self-esteem and Mary Hughes showed them that second-chances and trusting their instincts could bring them happiness beyond their wildest dreams.
This is the third is a series but can be read as a standalone, but reading the other books in the series can make the reader feel better connected to the characters and the general plot arc that it's set in. A good paranormal romance about vampires with decent action and steam. Rey discovers the man she is in love with isn't a man at all, but actually one of the most powerful vampires to exist. Greyson/Kai Elias is a good leading character and so is Relia "Rey." Both are caring and kind in their own ways. There is danger and desire, twists and turns, evil and adventure, drama and tension, but it sometimes becomes a little overwhelming to the plot. The dialogue and writing style just never fully hooked me and I just never loved the book like I wanted. Fans of paranormal romance will enjoy this if they love vampire romances.
I know I'm in the minority for this one, and I'm sorry for that! But I just didn't love this book. I can totally see why some people would absolutely love it, but it just didn't end up being for me. So to start off, even though it's listed as the third in a series, it can be read as a standalone (it's one of those series that focuses on a new couple in each book) so no issues there. But when I first started reading it, I actually thought maybe I was wrong and this was part of an ongoing series based on these characters (Elias and Rey). I was just so confused about what was going on. It didn't take me too long to piece things together, so it wasn't that much of an issue but I hate getting off to a bad start with a book.
In terms of the storyline itself, it did have some interesting twists and surprises, and I loved that Elias was able to go through a million scenarios in his head before acting upon a plan. It was neat to read through all the different ways certain plans of action could go wrong. Hughes' take on vampires was really unique - it was very interesting to read about them "calling on their vampire" or "bringing their vampire to the front" as opposed to them just... being vampires all the time you know? Really unique, and I loved that creativity.
Another thing that kind of bugged me is that Rey and Elias had like... entire conversations in a single glance? I don't know, maybe it was meant to portray how connected they were? But to me, it just came off as super unrealistic. There were quite a few times where I was like, wait really? She/he said ALL that with their eyes lol? I know eyes are the window to the soul and all, but I think this took it to a bit of an extreme. Maybe I'm just being picky, I don't know. It was just one of those things that once I noticed, I couldn't forget.
Overall, I think this book has a super unique take on vampires, and a really interesting storyline. Just a few things that kind of bugged me and my personal preferences are what led to my rating. I absolutely think you should give this a try if you are a paranormal romance fan - it may be right up your alley!
This one was a miss for me. The writing style really didn't hook me. I felt confused by the changing perspective. The story had all the elements that were attractive to me-its a paranormal romance and that is my JAM! But, I could not get into this book. I would read a little bit, then put it down and try again the next day. It never takes me so long to finish a book. However, I will say it is a unique story and other readers might not be as put off by the writing style as I was (its a personal preference thing for sure).
Page-turning action that kept me guessing
One seriously twisted bad guy and his many minions
Two lost souls
A lot of self-deprecation going on with our two MC's
They both are so strong physically but extremely vulnerable emotionally
This is listed as a standalone - which in a way I agree with - For me though I believe reading the first two would have given me an even deeper connection to the cast
Rey was on a mission to save Grayson. She had an edge that no one was aware of and she would only use in an emergency. She would do whatever was necessary to save the man she loved. Even enter the den of an evil vampire packed with his altered minions.
Elias had gone undercover (an example of why I believe that reading the previous books would have given me a closer connection) and now that he had the information he needed he found that he wanted something else even more
And she was currently in grave danger
When fate brings them together (trying to do this without spoilers) they find they must trust the other - even if there was a reason not to
Secrets they have hidden will need to be revealed if they want to survive and save those they love
What proceeds is plenty of action, betrayal, lots of slippery slopes, and the realization that love comes in all forms -
including that of the self
The relationship between our two MCs was intense at times
Rey had to get past her prejudices and Elias had to see himself through fresh eyes
An easy to follow storyline that kept me engaged and wanting more
Great characters and world-building
There was the occasional lull but it was more of an information dump and was not unnecessary filler
As a long time fan of Mary Hughes' Love Bites series and the Ancients, Kai Elias' story is a glorious addition.
An incredible adventure filled with intrigue, passion and the quirky characters of Meiers Corners, Illinois.
You don't have to read the earlier books to thoroughly enjoy this one but each has it's own hunky vampire with all of the snarky dialogue and fan flaming hotness built right in!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book
Rey met Greyson after he had been poisoned by vampires because Lord Umbra wanted to bleed him dry and use his ancient vampire blood to keep himself alive longer. Rey found him and helped him but she thinks he's a human when in reality he's a ten thousand year old, ancient, vampire who had been poisoned and needed her help. Rey fell in love with Greyson in the time they spent together and Greyson fell in love with her but she hates vampires and has no idea he is one.
Rey goes to Castle Umbra to find the antidote for the poison that he was given and even though she finds a way to smuggle the antidote out of the castle, she is caught by Umbra. Umbra calls himself the Shadow Lord and people fear him. Umbra let's human know that vampires exist and all hell breaks loose. After Greyson gets the antidote and takes it, he remembers that he's actually Elias, an ancient vampire. He's sick with the knowledge because he knows that Rey hates vampires and will be horrified as well as terrified of him because vampires killed her parents when she was a kid and tortured her.
Elias goes to Castle Umbra to save Rey but instead gets caught in the same cell as Rey and she is horrified that Greyson is now a vampire. As they talk while they're in the cell, she realizes that he's not like the vampires that killed her parents. She doesn't completely trust him but she can see bits of Greyson in him and she loved Greyson. It takes a while but they start to trust one another and make a plan to escape.
This was such a good vampire romance. I love Greyson/Elias because he's so in love with Rey and so hurt when he thinks she'll never be able to love him as he now is. His heartache was sad to watch but seeing Rey realize that he's a good man was so much fun to watch. Rey was much more than she seemed and had some secrets but she isn't the only one with secrets. I loved the twists this story had, they made the story fun to read.
I enjoyed this story but at some points during the book I found the story to slow down quite a bit in places but it was enjoyable overall. This is the 3rd book in the series but I didn't feel lost at all. This can definitely be read as a standalone.
Disclosure: I was given an e-ARC of this book but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I like paranormal romances, but wasn’t sure if I was going to like this one. In the beginning, it felt like I was missing part if the story. Then I realized this was book 3, so yes I was. But I immediately became engrossed in the love story between the Ancient vampire Elias and the human/enhanced Rey. The sinister plot, the fanatics trying to rid our world of vampires and the battle between good and evil vampires made this a fast read. Can’t wait to see what the author, Mary Hughes, has in store for us!

Thank you to Entangled Publishing and Netgalley for an e-arc!
First off, I love that vampires are making a comeback!! I also enjoyed the distinction between the vampires who can be kind and good vs the vampires who are deemed completely as Villains. It was a great contrast. Rey/Relia was a great main character and I truly enjoyed her development and growth by the end of the book. Of course this was a bit spicy and we live for that and I fully support Rey and our sexy vampire King Elias! This was super enjoyable, dark and quite fun. There were a few twists thrown in here too and I thought they were done so well. I definitely would read more into this world and I thought this book was a real treat.
Night's Bliss by Mary Hughes is book Three in the The Ancients Series.
I haven't yet read the previous books so for me this was a standalone book. This book took me into the story quickly and kept me turning the pages. I always enjoy a good vampire story. I will be looking for more books from this author.
