When Becca’s best friend dies by suicide, it’s almost more than Becca can handle. She’s 17, finishing up high school, trying to navigate life with her parents, her ex-boyfriend, and her best friend’s older brother---all while trying to make sense of how her best friend is no longer with her. After some digging and some serious trust issues with her friend’s older brother, Becca is able to start putting some pieces together, and the result is more dangerous than she could have imagined. A YA book with just enough twists and suspense to make the pages fly by. WARNING: Definitely on the older side of YA due to content.
Special Note: Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review.
I got the arc off of Netgalley, these opinions are my own. I think I was hooked from the very beginning with this book! Becca’s best friend Rose has died, everyone says it was suicide or an accident, but Rose’s brother doesn’t believe that. Together (reluctantly on Becca’s part) they will find out what happened to Rose. I liked the added touch of Rose and Becca’s Bucket List, adventures they wanted to have, and how those were connected to what was going on currently in Becca’s life! I also really enjoyed the relationship between Ben and Becca, I loved how they made fun of each other while both hiding secrets! Their relationship reminded me of how I am with everyone. I saw of the twists coming but others I didn’t quite see! I was hooked and couldn’t put it down! Heather Van Fleet did a fantastic job with this one, can’t wait to read it again!!
I enjoyed this one! At first, it did start out pretty slow but it picked up. Once it did, I couldn’t put it down!
This book had a lot of emotion that came with it. Becca’s emotions regarding Rose’s death were very raw. I love a book that can put you in your feels. I also liked Becca & Ben’s relationship.
I totally guessed The Who & why. It was very apparent from the start. It was still a very entertaining read.
I'm so glad NetGalley offered this book as a "Read Now" option. I was very intrigued by it based on the cover alone, it's dark, ominous and just drew me in right away. Heather Van Fleet had me reading long into the night.
The story follows Becca, a 17 year old girl, after the tragic and questionable death of her best friend, Rose. We get flashbacks throughout the book from months before the night Rose died that help tie the story together. Ben, Rose's older brother, comes back from college for the funeral, determined to clear Rose's name as the town wild child who got what she deserved, he enlists the help of Becca.
The twists and turns this story has were just enough to keep you guessing, while also giving you the ammunition needed to form your own hypothesis about what really happened that fateful night. The villains in the story are just the kind of villains you love to hate. Sociopaths who take what they want and refuse to see that they are the problem.
I am always a sucker for character development, especially if the character goes from being timid and lacking confidence to standing on their own ready to take on anything. Becca is that character in this book. At the beginning we see a shell of who she is after losing Rose, the more outgoing part of their duo. By the end, Becca has become stronger and is finding her way in the world as an individual.
I recommend trying this out if you're in the mood for a mystery with a little dose of romance.
Interesting book, but didn't feel like much of a "thriller" until later on. The mystery behind Rose's death seems to be almost a background story. Instead, this felt more of a teen romance drama for the most part. A back and forth tug of war between Becca and Rose's brother, some forbidden love that they'd kept hidden from one another. Every once in awhile there would be some mention of Rose, or a glimpse into the past bringing a hint of something sinister going on.
The last One-third of this was when you finally start getting answers and it felt like a thriller.
Enjoyable still, but don't expect to swept off your feet immediately.
The ARC was provided to me free of charge by NetGalley (thank you) but the opinions are my own.
The Liars Beneath is a YA myster/romance set in a small town in Iowa. 17 year old Becca just lost her best friend Rose, her and Rose's brother Ben are the only ones who don't believe it was an accident.
It's a very slow burn romance with about three seconds of fake dating... meh.
As far as the mystery aspect of it I was definitely drawn in. Twists and turns I didn't immediately see coming but when it was all laid out made me feel ridiculous for not seeing it before.
Definitely could use some TW. There's several mentions of SA one particular scene comes to mind. The main character body shames herself A LOT, I asked myself a few time like who hurt you?
If you like Pretty Little Liars then there's a really good chance you'll enjoy this book
3.5/5 stars
Didn't relate to any of the characters so I didn't really care about them too much which was necessary to really enjoy the book. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book
This book was such a great read and I can not wait for it to hit the shelves. I can already think of a handful of people I want to tell to read this book! I love books that make you go "WHAT?" I did not see that coming.
Small town setting with best friends living their best high school days when tragedy happens. This book is filled with twists and turns as we try to figure out how Rose ended up dead. This book goes between present time and the past so to learn more about the characters that you never would have guessed. I thought I had this book all figured out but I was so wrong.
The Liars Beneath follows Seventeen-year-old Becca Thomson who loses her best friend, Rose, in a tragic accident.
When Rose's older brother, Ben returns home for the summer he seeks out Becca to help him find out what really happened to his sister. She agrees to help but as they work together things turn out to be darker and more dangerous than they could have anticipated.
Full of twists & turns and a slow-burn romance this story is hard to put down.
The first half of the story started out so well but then it felt like the second half got to be a little too much. Overall, the storyline and characters were interesting and the author did a great job of making the reader think of everyone (teachers, students, and friends) as a possible suspects behind the tragic death of Rose. The author also did a great job of touching on grief and the impact grief has on our lives.
Thank you to Heather Van Fleet and NetGalley for this ARC of The Liars Beneath in exchange for my honest review.
I was hesitant about this from how it started off but it didn't take long for the story to pull me in. Unfortunately this was more romance instead of mystery and suspense which was a little disappointing, though the romance wasn't instant love so it was bearable. Despite the lack of mystery, the story kept me hooked until the end. Thank you NetGalley for an ARC.
Seventeen year old Becca Thomson teams up with her late best friend’s older brother to find out what really happened the night that Rose McCain died. In a small Iowa town, just about everyone—friends, classmates, even teachers—is a suspect, and the more Becca and Ben dig around for information, the more their lives are in danger. Full of twists and unexpected revelations, The Liars Beneath is a fast-paced young adult thriller with a slow burn romance to top it off.
I really enjoyed this book and the only reason it didn't get a higher rating is because the second half of the book got a little exaggerated and drug out. I loved the tale of friendship and how you may not truly ever know those closest to you but that's okay. I thought it covered dealing with grief really well also. Unfortunately it reached a climax halfway through and then plateaued and just felt too unrealistic for the situation.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for a copy of the ebook in exchange for an honest review.
Ya books are pretty popular at the book store I work at. But I think ya thrillers are becoming a thing as we go along. It was great, I loved the twist and turns we were pulled into and I adored the characters. This was so much fun, much more then I expected !!
The Liars Beneath was a great, well written, great paced romantic mystery! A girls best friend dies under suspicious circumstances (at least that's what the mc thinks) and the story is mainly about the girl and the brother of the best friend who died trying to get down to the truth and see what exactly happened to her best friend. At first the main character and the brother do not get along at all but throughout the book they start to become a lot more than casual acquaintances or just friends. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good teen mystery / thriller.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for a honest review.
Sweet love story laced in with mystery that keeps you guessing. What really happened to Rose? And how well did her best friend really know her?
This is a mystery and a romantic story at the same time. I highly enjoyed it and couldn’t wait to find out what happened. I also really identified with the main character.

The Liars Beneath by Heather Van Fleet was a phenomenal book!
This was one of those book I couldn't put my Kindle away!
I was hanging onto every word Fleet wrote and this wild story is such a gripping, enthralling, wild story!
I couldn't get enough of it!
This romantically dark YA thriller is crazy and nothing is what it seems here in this small town in Iowa.
Loved it, couldn't get enough it, devoured it, needed it!

Thank you again Publisher, NetGalley and Author for this advanced ebook copy!
I will post to my platforms closer to pub date!
Thank you Netgalley and Wise Wolf Books for offering this book as a "Read Now" option! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Becca just lost her best friend and is having trouble handling grief and moving on. When Becca's best friend's brother comes back to town he asks her for help solving his sister's possible murder. Becca agrees unwillingly and not realizing the rabbit hole she just jumped into.
My review:
I'm glad this book is available as a Read Now option on Netgalley as this was what I was in the mood for: a twisty, possible murder mystery with realistic characters... just in time for Halloween. I felt heartbroken for Becca as she is trying to figure out her life without her best friend. Ben was a good addition and I liked the dynamic between him and Becca.
I liked this book and would recommend to anyone who has read There's Someone In Your House or All Your Twisted Secrets.
(The ISBN is wrong on Goodreads, I'll post review manually)
