I can appreciate the way Pitt is trying to inform about science principles and the nature of truth within the framework of a story. It's a bit heavyhanded though. The science is largely natural to the story, makes sense in the context of the plot rather than becoming a lecture. It is not especially personable or natural though. THe writing is overall a bit stiff. I appreciate the natural explanation of disinformation though.
It’s refreshing to find a middle grade book focused on science, though there is a “paranormal” sub-plot woven throughout the pages.
Ally and her two girl friends are determined to win the Australian science competition that will give them an all-expense paid trip to the Smithsonian in the USA. Trying to figure out their experiment isn’t the only mystery the friends will try to solve! Trouble maker triplets, a middle grade unrequited crush, an age-old ghost story/mystery, a crotchety next-door neighbour, and an irritating would-be-real-estate buyer make Ally’s world interesting.
Some great scientific explanations make this read educational and entertaining at the same time.
Content suitable for the older middle-grade reader.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through Net Galley. All opinions expressed are my own.
Fun middle-grade book. Ally and her friends are determined to win an Australian science project contest that would win them a trip to the US and a visit to the Smithsonian. Lots of trial and error, as with all great science, leads to adventures. Throw in the support of the community, some crazy neighbors, a ghostly mystery and a “can do” spirit, this makes for a great, upbeat, fun read. Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a preview copy.
