Thank you for letting me read this book. Unfortunately this was the case when you have to read the first one to probably enjoy the second . I haven't read her first book in this installment and so for me it was boring and nothing really happened. I feel hesitant to write a review, but wanted to let you know that if you haven't read the first book read it before this one.
Picking up right after the huge cliffhanger in The Awakening, Nora Roberts draws you into The Becoming with her immersive world-building and top tier action.
This fantasy series is a great addition to your TBR list, and the audiobooks are wonderfully narrated.
I enjoyed this book. Roberts has created an immersive fantasy world that makes you feel a part of it. I read it for the fantasy, not the romance, but that will probably appeal to other readers. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
Thank you to netgalley for the advance copy of this audiobook. After reading the first of this series I was anxiously waiting for the release of The Becoming. Was not disappointed however I do recommend rereading The Awaking (at least browsing) again as a refresher. The narration in both books is fantastic and like the first book, The Becoming, had me driving an extra block or two just to finish a thought or a chapter. Already purchased for my library.
Loving this series! The narration is spot on and the book was a great continuation. I can't wait for the next book to explore the journey even more!
Again, Barrie Kreinik does a beautiful job of narrating this second book in The Dragon Heart Legacy. Book one (The Awakening) did a lot of the heavy lifting, so this second book could launch right into the action. Nora Roberts shows off her superior writing skills with the complex relationships in this book - not just the romance, but the friendships and familial bonds are such a complex tapestry and it's a wonder to behold the weaving of it. I loved this book even more than the first, and can't wait for book three!
The Becoming by Nora Roberts is the second book in the in The Dragon Heart Legacy series, and unlike most second books in trilogies this didn't feel like a filler book at all. There was not a single dull moment and I loved how the story progresses. The already immersive world building gets more elaborate, there's thriving friendships and relationships, some very unexpected plot turns, plenty of drama and action and the steadily blooming romance between Keagan and Breen. Oh, and I loved what Ms Roberts gave Marco in this book (insert ALL heart eye emojis).
I can easily say that I loved this book as much as The Awakening and will be eagerly awaiting the final installment.
The audio was superbly done by Barrie Kreinik and I loved how she put so much emotion and expression in her narration, making the listening experience a real treat.
I wasn't disappointed in The Becoming, which is Book 2 in the Dragon Heart Legacy by Nora Roberts. I think I especially enjoy this series because it's so different from anything that Ms. Roberts has written in SO long. It's been nice to escape to Talamh, to the world of dragons, trolls, weres, and other fae.
In this installment, Breen and Marco are back in Ireland/Talamh. Odran's army is growing stronger and Breen is gearing up for the growing threat and the upcoming battle to save their worlds. Keegan and Breen's relationship grows, however awkwardly, and Marco finds love in Talamh. The characters are well developed and you learn more of the story of Talamh throughout the book. I really enjoyed this book and cannot wait for the third one. I'd highly recommend this series if you enjoy Nora Roberts and/or a good sci-fi suspense!
Barrie Kreinik once again did a lovely job narrating part 2 of this tale. She does a fabulous job bringing a unique voice to each character and she's so very easy to listen to. It's a real treat. She brought each and every character to life.
Thanks to #NetGalley #NoraRoberts and #MacmillianAudio for the opportunity to listen to and review this ARC!
Thank you Netgalley and MacMillan Audio for the chance to listen to The becoming by Nora Roberts. This is the 2nd book in The Dragon Heart Legacy series, and was just as wonderful as The awakening. The magic of both Ireland and Talamh was brought to life again by the narrator, Barrie Kreinik. I listened to Breen continue to train as both a witch and the key to ending the dark that threatens Talamh. She grows not only her powers, but as a woman who finally knows her true strength. Along the way her BFF Marco finds himself transported to the Talamh and quickly learns to deal with the magical world as he finds love. I totally enjoyed the magic, humour and suspense as we have to wait whether Breen and Keegan can finally rid their world of evil -- hopefully I dont have to wait too long until book 3, The offering!
2.5
The second installment of The Awakening was mostly entertaining. Breen returns to Talamh along with Marco. However, I had a hard time finishing it. Although I love the friendship of Breen and Marco, the romance between Breen and Keegan was anything but entertaining. It was stilted and strange. I found myself trying to get through it and did not enjoy the read but was committed to finishing it.
Having just finished Book 1 on audiobooks and not being really engaged with the story, I was hoping that Book 2 would be a better experience.
Unfortunately it wasn’t. The audiobook narration was great, just as in the first book. I enjoyed the accents and the narrator had a variety of voices for the different characters which made it easier to keep everyone straight.
I’m disappointed that I haven’t been able to find the comfort in reading a Nora Roberts story that I once did. Not sure if it’s me, perhaps my readings tastes have changed, or if it’s the writing. I felt like, as in book 1, there was way too much time spent on Breen learning how to fight with swords, too little time spent with anything dragon related and the lovely friendship with Marco felt really fake or forced…. not sure.
I loved how Roberts would build her relationships between characters in her past books. But Marco’s character is an over the top LGBTQ character that check marks all the normal gay stereotypes but has nothing underneath those flashy characteristics. Breen is also a very surface-level character to me and their relationship was very meh. Conversations consist of all the normal stereotype’s you’d expect of a straight woman/gay man friendship. Nothing new here. No depth of feeling or connection.
And while we are talking about connection…..it’s almost non-existent between Breen and Keegan. Disappointing.
As a summary, the narration is great! Love listening to the Irish accent here and there throughout the story.
The rest of the story was not up to the level I would expect from a fantasy trilogy or from Nora Roberts herself. I won’t be reading Book 3 as I’m just not that invested in the characters.
Thank you to #NetGalley and #MacMillanAudio for providing the ARC for review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Anyone who is a fan of Nora Roberts' fantasy books and the All Souls trilogy by Deborah Harkness is going to be drawn to the Dragon Heart Legacy. It has everything you could want in a fantasy series. There were times while I was listening that it made me think of the LotR by JRR Tolkien and all the fantasy books I read in my 20s and there were a lot.
The story will reel you in and not let you stop reading (or listening) until you read the last page and then you realize you have to wait for book three, but it doesn't really matter because you are going to read the first two again anyway.
The characters are well written, the community well defined. There are bad.guys to hate and good guys to love. There are fairies and dragons, witches and regular people. Very enjoyable way to spend a day.

The Becoming is another fantastic installment of The Dragon Heart Legacy series. I listened to the audiobook of this and once again, Barrie Kreinik narrated this tale beautifully.
While listening/reading this story, you will be flown away on dragons, fighting off evil witches, demons and a psychotic fae grandfather, while getting acquainted with the land of Talamh, a world filled with magic and supernatural abilities.
The Becoming had all the ingredients that make a great fantasy and as the relationships with the protagonists continue to develop, I do love that Nora Roberts is inclusive with this story as it provides a loving environment within a world that could be chaotic. I really appreciate that a big part of the story is the friendship between Breen and Marco and that there are more hints of a bigger love story yet to come between Breen and Keegan.
One downside is I’m not a big fan of cliffhangers as I prefer a book to feel like the main plot has been completed with a door open to a continuation of the story. However, I don’t realize that it’s normal to have cliffhangers in fantasy series, but it still doesn’t make me like them any better.
Thank you Macmillan Audio for the advanced listening copy. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
The Becoming is the second book in a series. You can read/listen to it as a standalone, but you will miss a ton of the nuance and world building that Nora Roberts so beautifully writes. If you are on the fence about audio book vs. ebook vs. dead tree book, let me push you off of that fence towards the audio book. The narrator, Barrie Kreinik, takes a great book and turns it into an amazing masterpiece. It is unlikely that your internal voice is even a tenth as good as she is. I cannot praise her enough.
Breen Kelly returns to Talamh with her gay best friend Marco, who wasn't sure he really believed that Breen was telling the truth about a magic land. To Marco's delight, he discovers dragons and faeries and mermaids oh my! Marco also meets Keegan and is welcomed by Breen's friends and family. It doesn't hurt that he finds someone special to spend his time with!
Also, there are baby dragons! Who doesn't like baby dragons?
The Becoming is a fantasy quest with an ending that shows a clear path forward to the next story. There is a secondary story line slow burn romance between Breen and Keegan that enhances the main story in some delightful ways. In the end, Breen's evil grandfather/god is dealt with (probably not permanently) but is not defeated. Old players are released in various ways and new ones introduced that will carry on to the next story.
I started this one immediately after finishing the first installment and just wish the third book was ready!!!! Breen has come back to Ireland, this time with Marco, and he is welcomed by all he meets. Breen has undergone training with Keegan, the ruler of the Fey but there is as war coming and she will be at the center of it. Her grandfather, the ruler of the dark Fey, her father's father, wants her power and wants her and will stop at nothing to get it. He has sent minions into Talamh to get her they have been stopped so far but for how long. This story just keeps getting better. This was a long audio, 15 hours, but it did not seem like it because it was so good! So many twists and turns and, of course, there is so much happening that we cannot wait for the ending to come with the next book!
I very much enjoy this book. I found it to be well written and I was hooked from the beginning.
I did also find that the narrator did a fantastic job.
I do highly recommend this series.
This is going on my best of the year list for sure. You must read book 1 first, but it is well worth your time. The narrator is fantastic if you like audio. The story and characters are compelling with or without narration.
I have been anticipating this second book since the first book in the Dragon Heart Legacy was released. The Becoming is a wonderful book. Breen grows so much into her confidence and power. It’s lovely that she can share her new life with Marco.
A new villain is added to Odran’s team. Marco finds a love. Breen and Keegan’s relationship develops further. Talamh is a lovely world. There is more about the dragons which is wonderful.
As anticipated there are more clashes with Odran.
The narrator does a fabulous job.
Content warnings: swearing; sex with mentions of homosexual and some violent relations. This would push this book toward the adult end of the spectrum. I wouldn’t recommend for under 18.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to listen to this book.
I enjoyed the audio version of this book very much. Barrie Kreinik did a great job with this book! I enjoyed listening to this book and Barrie was able to give each character a voice.
I was able to get my hands on an advanced copy of the audiobook, unsure if I would get the same satisfaction as I have with the written version. Worry no longer. This was magical - brought to life via an excellent narrator combined with the writing style only Nora Roberts can provide.
Nora Roberts once again transports us to Ireland and the secret world of Thalin where Keegan, Marco, Marg, and the gang work together to push back the dark. As Bremen works to “become” more than she is, we get glimpses into her past and cheer her on to her future. With a handsome hero, a brave dog and her stalwart friend by her side, we know she cannot fail. I Cannot wait until the conclusion and yet I will be sad when it is all over.
