Thank you so much @SourceBooks & @NetGalley for giving me this physical ARC in exchange for my honest and unbiased review (Release Date | 21 June 2022)
SYNOPSIS | Meg has gone by many different names & lived many different lives as she is a con artist always working on the next long con. Kat is a journalist who has been trying to hunt down Meg for the last 10 years. Both women are seeking closure... & revenge.
WHAT I LIKED:
- completely unputdownable (I literally gorged this in 24 hours)
- I love reading about (& rooting for) a morally grey character
- both MCs where extremely well-developed & I understood their motivations & desires
- it was fascinating reading through the thought process & calculated thinking that goes into pulling off a long con
- definitely my favourite thriller of 2022 so far
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:
- there is a lot of real estate lingo (but I just bought a house so it didn't bother me too much)
Meg is a master manipulator! She is one of the best con artists out there. And she has never been caught. Enter Kat. Kat blames Meg for something which happened to her years ago. She has been searching for Meg ever since. So, when Meg shows back up under her real name Kat manages to weave herself into Meg’s life with the hope to take her down. But Meg stays one step ahead.
Ok..there is no way I can read all the books sent to me…and a lot of times my eyes are bigger than my reading time. So, I had skipped this one. But, because my good friend over at Silver’s Reviews rated it 5 stars, I decided to go back and pick it up! And boy! What a ride this book is!
I classify this book as a “smart read”. Not many authors get this award. But, Meg is one of the smartest and slickest characters I have ever come across. Her level of manipulation is genius.
Then there is Kat. Her life has basically been destroyed and she has struggled to get it back. So, she goes in full fledged to try and stop Meg. And the closer she gets the more she realizes Meg may not be the con Kat thinks she is!
This is a story which twists and turns and keeps the reader on their toes. And believe it or not…I loved Meg. I never knew what she was going to do next!
Need just an all around fabulous read…THIS IS IT! Grab your copy today!
I received this novel from the publisher for a honest review.
Does anyone remember the show Leverage? It probably hasn’t been on for 10 years or more. The series revolving around a group of con artists, and it was so good. This book took me back to that show.
I was a huge fan of The Last Flight. So much so that it made my top 10 of 2020. But after finishing, The Lies I Tell, I feel like Julie blew that out of the water. I think this new one is better!
The story was subtle, quietly developing, both building up and unraveling like an onion. Two points of view, some flashback to set the stage and give an explanation. I could not stop reading. I felt empathy for both characters, I could see both their stories unfolding almost like a movie.
Julie Clark is quickly becoming a must read author for me. I cannot wait to see what she writes next.
I love how so many things happened in the book. I could not keep myself from the book because it was so good
I love a good grifter story. Meg is the woman we meet who sees men who have wronged her or others and is determined to ruin them. Yes she gets their money but she gets so much more in destroying their lives. Kay crossed paths with Meg ten years ago and while the reporter she was working with refused to see the other story that deepened the one he was writing, Kat did. I’m the years in between Kat never gives up her plan to make Meg pay for what she believes is all Meg’s fault.
How do you track a person who changes names and games? How do you infiltrate their life and con without giving yourself away?
This is a great book and what should have been a quick read. Pick it up! Thank you to Netgalley and Sourcebooks for an advanced copy.
The Lies I Tell lives up to all the praise I have read about this book. It is definitely a thriller and kept me anticipating how this story would end, this is the perfect book to add to your summer reading list.
This book was the ultimate cat and mouse game with both women being either the cat or mouse at different times in the book. By the end of the book, I wasn't sure that Meg was a horrible person like I initially thought. What she did was shady and wrong but her reasoning, well she wasn't entirely in the wrong. Kat has her own reason(s) for getting close to Meg but can she handle the games they will inflict on each other.
That ending wasn't what I was expecting either.
Another great story from Julie Clark! Meg Williams has moved around the country, taking on different names, careers, and schemes. She is a grifter, a con woman, and really good at it. Kat Roberts is an aspiring writer, who has been looking for Meg for the last 10 years. Kat blames Meg for putting her in a bad situation. Kat has her own set of problems- she can’t live up to her mother’s expectations and she lives with her fiancée, a recovering gambling addict. She believes Meg to be a con artist and is working on a story to expose her. Now, Meg is back in California, and Kat is trying to figure out her newest scheme. However, Meg throws a curve ball by hiring Kat, as her assistant. Now, Kat might be too close, as Meg is treating her like a friend, while things start going wrong in Kat’s life. Who does Kat believe is the cause of her problems- her boyfriend or her new boss, Meg? Thank you to Sourcebooks Landmark and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Wow!! This thriller was my beach read this year and it did not disappoint! I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN!
This story is told from two perspectives: Kat, a reporter, and Meg, a con artist.
Kat knows Meg is a con artist and she is out to expose her. She uses a false name and befriends Meg. But as Kat’s life starts to fall apart she begins to suspect that SHE has become Meg’s target! As she slowly gets closer to the truth she makes some startling discoveries!
Meg has been a con artist for years, gradually building her banking account by scamming rich men. Her latest target is personal. He took her mother’s house.
I really enjoyed Meg’s point of view a bit more than Kat’s perspective. It was interesting to see how a con artist approached her target and set him up! The conclusion of this one was fantastic! I did not expect it!
This thriller does not have a body count, but the tension certainly mounts! Don’t miss this one if you love twisty psychological thrillers!
My sincere thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for my digital copy. My thoughts are my own.
This book was so great! I loved Julie Clark’s The Last Flight, and this newest read was no exception. The Lies I Tell sucked me in from the start.
Meg is a con artist. Kat is the journalist who’s life Meg changed ten years prior. When Meg returns to Kat’s town with a personal vendetta against a man running for political office, Kat is determined to figure out how and why and get her story.
I enjoyed the multiple POVs in this one. Clark keeps you guessing and turning the pages to find out what happens next. I had a hard time putting this one down as the way Clark wrote about Meg’s cons was enticing.
Pick this up if you loved Cover Story or The Tinder Swindler on Netflix. This one will make you wonder about real life cons and their backstories. What makes them tick? Why do the tell the lies they tell?
The story has dual narrators, but it's easy to follow. Meg is a con artist - a very gifted con artist - with specific goals. Her marks always deserve what they get. Kat isn't quite as well developed as Meg, but still a great character. There was one plot point I figured out from the very beginning. It didn't weaken the story at all.
I particularly liked that the author ties up all the loose ends. The book doesn't leave you dangling - always a big plus for me. I would highly recommend this book.
That you to all for an ARC of this great story.

WHAT A RIDE!
Meg Williams is known by many names- Meg, Melody, Maggie. It all depends on who you ask after she has conned her way into their lives, and then leaves without a goodbye. Kat Roberts is a writer who has been searching for Meg for ten years because she believes Meg has ruined her life. When they cross paths neither believes the other, lies are told, and when the truths are revealed you realize there is more to Meg and Kat than meets the eye.
This was a fast paced read- the characters were well developed and while there were no major plot twists it still kept your interest and left room for plenty of surprises.
I thoroughly enjoyed Julie Clark's The Last Flight, and The Lies I Tell was on my must read list for 2022, and it did not disappoint!
The last couple books I have picked up seems to be the con-woman/several identities trope. The Lies I tell by Julie Clark was a fast paced book and I could not put this one down. I am looking forward to reading her future books!
Hello auto-buy author! So nice to see you again!
The Lies I Tell was a most anticipated read because The Last Flight was SO GOOD!
I immediately sat down with this one, and next thing I knew I had read halfway without coming up for air. The plot is twisty and quite genius and I loved the ins and outs of con-artistry, but also how Julie Clark just writes the most enticing stories of bad ass females.
She makes you love the characters whether they are the good ones, or the bad ones. Ultimately - she just makes you full on root for the women when it comes down to it. There's a relatability drawn into each person you meet - regardless of their troubles, their pasts, or even if they are partaking in some shady business - you can find something to relate to in each character - and I think that's why I get so absorbed into the plots.
The Lies I Tell is dual perspective - flipping between a con-artist and the journalist who wants to expose her - and it's the most fun cat and mouse game that has you guessing the entire time - but also cheering madly by the end.
Bravo Julie! Another home run!
This books description pulled me in and I'm so glad to have gone on this ride with Kat and Meg.
Kat believes Meg ruined her life and she's going to get her revenge, even if it did take ten years to cross paths with her again. Meg, a professional con artist, will adapt to any role she needs too. Kat wants to bring her down and expose her con.
I like Kat's gusto, but I don't think her character had the actual tenacity and hutzpah to actually achieve what she wanted. As the story continues you see Kat suffer for her naivety. Kat also learns more about Meg and her motivations, which as a reader I loved watching this unfold. The dynamic between Kat and Meg was great and made me want to read more and more. I enjoyed the twists and turns these two took me through.
"The difference between justice and revenge comes down to who’s telling the story."
Meg Williams knows a thing or two about justice, or lack there of, and delivering it via ice cold platter in her own manner.
But when Kat, a budding journalist who was a unknown casualty of a previous Meg target, finds out Meg is back in town, she strikes up her own ruse to try and out mouse a cat at her own game.
Told from both women's perspectives with a couple flashbacks to Megs prior "gigs", Julie Clark weaves a tale of multiple women wronged with a side of revenge.
Special thanks to @netgalley and @bookmarked for the advanced copy
Julie Clark has done it again! THE LIES I TELL is every bit the page-turning delight of THE LAST FLIGHT. The complicated friendships, tight thread of tension throughout, and the perfect balance of telling us about imperfect people and making us root for them...it all worked perfectly. Chef's kiss.
This was a highly anticipated read for me that, thankfully, delivered!! I loved the suspense and the way the characters developed. I also really loved the overall feminist message of the book, despite it being very plainly stated in the epilogue rather than trusting the readers to “get it”. Very smart and fun read! Definitely recommend for a weekend or pool bag.
Give me all the "woman seeking revenge" vibes you've got.
I can't say much more without spoiling the plot of THE LIES I TELL, but I can safely say that this one worked for me. This "domestic thriller" checked a lot of boxes, delivering both well-drawn characters and a page-turning plot.
The story centers around Meg, a con artist, and Kat, a freelance reporter/copyeditor who's been waiting to expose Meg's lies for a decade. Both their perspectives are shown, as well as some flashbacks.
I had a lot of fun with this one; it's already slotted into the group of more enjoyable (and more memorable) mysteries/thrillers I've read this year.
