Well written, from the pov of two different characters, which can be difficult to pull off seamlessly.
Meg is homeless, living out of the van she inherited when her mother passed away. She sees an opportunity and creates a "chance" meeting with a man and the two start dating. She is developing skills as a con artist, looking to extract money for herself, and inflict as much pain and shame upon her choice of men.
Kat is a newspaper reporter and aspiring novelist.. She is a researcher working on a breaking story about a high school principal that has been arrested for sexual relationships with students. Kat fields a phone call of a tip that is a potential huge break in the story they are working on. Based on previous interviews and notes, Kat is sure that Meg is the one placing the call. Acting on the tip changes Kat's life in ways she never imagined.
The story takes place ten years in the future. Meg has returned to Los Angeles, and Kat is driven to expose her as a fraud and con artist. As the two women grow close and get to know each other, layers of the past are revealed as Meg's current con is being set up and moved into operational status. It is as these layers are revealed that we get to know the characters, particularly Meg. These layers also serve the purpose to reveal that while she is a con artist, she is specific in who she targets and why she targets them. She operates with a strict adherence to a code taught by her mother where women need to help each other out.
I enjoyed the book. The two person narrative was flawlessly written and was perfect for telling the story.
When I saw this book on the READ NOW on NetGalley, I immediately downloaded. I love thrillers especially ones that are about revenge. Although I had a bit of trouble engaging at the beginning, it picked up and I couldn’t wait to see how the story ended.
Meg Williams who goes also by Maggie Littleton, Melody Wilde is a con artist who takes on a different name and occupation in each city-but one who follows a “girl code” and only targets men who have taken something from women. Greedy men who only think of themselves.
Kat Roberts, a journalist who followed a lead that Meg gave her 10 years ago, which changed her life completely and not in a positive way is out for revenge. Kat decides to befriend Meg but as she spends time with her, she starts to question Megs reasoning to what she does.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC.
The Lies I Tell by Julie Clark is a thriller about Meg, a con artist who is out for revenge, and Kat, a reporter who has been waiting for Meg to return. As they get closer, they start to realize who each other really is, and they also realize that some things just aren't as black and white as they seem. This was a really fun read, and both of the characters were extremely well-written. Highly recommend! Thanks to NetGalley for the free digital review copy. All opinions are my own.
A thank you to Netgalley for sharing the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I loved The Last Flight, so had high hopes with this one, and it didn't disappoint so often as it did not. While I did think that the story was rather ludicrous and it took me a while to get into, I found myself caught up in this odd little game of cat and mouse between two odd unlike one another yet oddly alike. Ultimately, a compulsive read and will continue to read books by this author.
MEG- After her mother was conned and they lost their family home , Meg was forced to live in a car and it’s a trauma she has carried with her since her childhood.
It’s now been ten years and Meg is back in LA and she’s looking for revenge for what was taken from her. Her mother has passed and Meg feels it’s the perfect time . Meg has practiced and she has perfected her own type of con, she takes down men who hurt woman and take advantage of the them. She has gone by many different names and leaves men questioning what the heck just happened? How did this one woman turn his life completely upside down? She exposes their lies and takes all their money.
KATE- Kate was working as a journalist ten years ago she was trying to make a name for herself. Meg called in a tip on a story, and what happened next changed Kate into a woman afraid of men and she blames Meg. Kate has been searching for the infamous Meg and she now got the alert that Meg is back. Kate plans to expose Meg and show them the con that Meg really is.
I truly enjoyed this book the cat and mouse thriller had my head spinning. This was a quick read and I loved it!!
The Lies I Tell is a twisted domestic thriller that dives deep into the psyches and motivations of two women and their unwavering quest to seek justice for the past and rewrite the future.
It’s absolutely unputdownable — I started reading it Friday night and was hoping to get a few chapters in. Cut to me over an hour later and more than a third of the way in. I was deeply considering staying up to finish it.
This one is speaking to two trends I’m loving lately. The first is con artist stories — like we are def riding a wave of some nonfiction as well as fictional con artist stories. The other kind of *theme* I’m thriving with is feminist thrillers. Like give me a girlie taking down a man in an absolutely savage way any day (I need it these days).
BTW. I got actual chills at the ending.
Read if… Selling Sunset is your guilty pleasure and you loved Cover Story and Bad Blood.
I enjoyed this story very much. There were a lot of twists and turns and I could not put it down. thank you so much
Thanks to Netgalley and Sourcebooks for my early. copy of this one.
I loved The last flight so I was hoping for another good one. This one was fantastic!
The con woman who isn't what she seems. I loved the way it all came together at the end. I don't want to say too much and spoil the story. Just read it!
Not having read anything by this author, I did not know what to expect. That said I was pleasantly surprised at Lies I Tell.
Meg Williams and Kat Roberts, as different as they are the same. Both have deep-seated issues. Meg is bitter about how her mother was treated by a man who stole everything from her. Kat is an unsuccessful reporter who is trying to write a story and expose Meg for the con artist she is.
Meg is plotting her revenge against the man who destroyed her mother, but also cons people out of their money. She only goes after men who are selfish and narcissistic, according to Meg. These two women eventually meet and become friends and that is when Kat finds out that Meg is more than what she thought she was.
Is what Meg does ethical, no not really but it was fun to read how she manipulates the target she is after and gets away with millions in cash and properties. I was rooting for her the whole time. As for Kat, she was finally successful in turning her life around, including the relationship with her fiance.
This book is a twisty psychological domestic thriller that will appeal to you if you like this kind of story. My favorite kind. I really enjoyed this book and I give it 5 stars!
THE LIES I TELL
Julie Clark
Mystery/Thriller
As Meg Williams travels across the United States she performs a con in each city she visits. Changing her name as well as she travels. Kat, a journalist, has been wanting to write a book about Meg for over ten years but when she finally has the information she needs will she turn Meg in or write a book about an anonymous woman?
I had a little trouble getting into this book at first because it goes all over these two ladies lifetimes and back and forth between them. Each chapter is set in a different characters perspective but once I got into the rhythm this book sucked me in. I think I read it in a little over a day. This was definite a five star read for me.
This is the book of two women, told in alternating points of view. One is a woman who is a con artist, seeking revenge against a man who ripped her family home out from under her mom, changing their lives forever. The other is a journalist, chasing a story about the con artist she was first made aware of 10 years prior and has been obsessed with since. When the con artist suddenly resurfaces, she befriends her to try to get the inside story. Is she just setting herself up to be conned as well? Can you ever truly trust a con artist?
Whereas I enjoyed the story, I felt at times it was a little far fetched. But then again, maybe some people are just more gullible and trusting than I would think. Or maybe it’s because of my banking background that makes me more skeptical. Regardless, I found it entertaining, just not very believable at times.
Thank you to Netgalley and Sourcebooks Landmark for gifting me with an advanced copy to read and review. And also thank you to Book of the Month for making in an option so that I could have a hard copy for family to read as well.
This was such a well done thriller, I was blown away. Meg/Maggie/Melody is a con woman that will become whoever you need her to be, and you are none the wiser that nothing about her is real, all you’ll know is that when she is gone? You’ve probably lost everything.
Kat has been waiting ten years for Meg to return, and now that she has Kat is determined to expose her, but as they grow closer, she starts to question whether her original assumptions where correct as well as what her true target is.
I’ll keep this short as I’m late to the game in reading and reviewing this one, but It was fantastic, captivating from the very beginning and I absolutely loved both sides and POV’s from Meg and Kat equally. I have not read a thriller like this in such a long time and it was so refreshing. I listened to the audiobook for this one as well and it is excellent, you won’t be disappointed if you choose to read it this way. I finished this one within a day because I could not stop listening, so, so good! Clark is definitely on my auto buy list now as I also loved The Last Flight. I definitely recommend this one, it is not to be missed!
Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Landmark for the digital copy to review. This one is available now.
I have mixed thoughts about this book. First in my opinion it is mis-categorized. I don't see it as a domestic thriller, nor suspense. I'm not sure what I would catorgize it as but it is a good, thrilling read. I enjoyed this story but in my opinion the amount of legal/real estate jargon was unnecessary. All in all I did enjoy this book but it just wasn't as exciting as it's made out to be.
Kat Roberts and Meg Williams are two women whose lives were altered by the actions of unscrupulous men at a young age. Although their reactions to these events have set them off on very different lives, ten years later their paths cross. Kat blames Meg for what happened to her and makes her acquaintance to take her revenge; while Meg is on a course to take her own revenge. As their relationship grows, Kat finds herself seeing an unexpected side to Meg. I found myself unable to walk away from this story and it certainly did not disappoint.
"The difference between justice and revenge comes down to who's telling the story."
The Lies I Tell is a twisty cat and mouse domestic thriller. Told through alternating points of view and flashbacks, Clark reveals Kat and Meg's true intentions while leading her reader into the moral grey area where the plot sits. Readers will have compounding emotions—they won't know who is the con and who is the prey.
Clark's characters are complex, layered, and strong. Despite their distrust of one another, Meg and Kat forge an unlikely friendship that weaves an insidious and intriguing web. And fans of The Last Flight will love the cameo at the airport. Clever, clever!
The Lies I Tell is perfectly executed! It takes a deep dive into the motivations of two women seeking justice for those who who have wronged them and in their endeavour to change the course of their lives.
Brilliant plot and very clever writing! It's not often you get to share an adventure with a devious mind so buckle your seatbelt and enjoy the ride. You don't want to miss this one....worth every minute.
“The Lies I Tell” by Julie Clark was a page turner.
Two women on two different courses in life but about to twist together for reasons unknown but worth finding out. Meg is a con artist and Kat is a reporter. They both have old scars to heal and are on course to do just that regardless of whose lives they destroy in the process. Great read that keeps you on your toes and oh so curious as to where this will all lead and how. So worth the read.

What a fine well structured story! I so enjoyed reading this tale of a con woman pursued by a diligent reporter who carries a bit of a vendetta.
Meg Williams, who has assumed many different names and occupations, is a woman to be reckoned with. She is a master at her craft that of being a con woman. Meg is clever, anticipating all the steps needed to entrap her mark and then disappear into the wind.
Kat Roberts has been bidding her time hoping that Meg will once again crop up into her life where can can extract the punishment she believes Meg deserves.
All changes as these two women draw closer together and makes them both know tha there is a lot brewing below the surface of a person.
Definitely recommend this story and thank Julie Clark, Sourcebook Landmarks, and NetGalley for a copy of this domestic thriller.
This second novel by Julie Clark is awesome. I did not read the Flight Attendant but this one really knocked it out of the park. I loved the con artist story line and really enjoyed the characters in this book. I would recommend this book for anyone trying to find a fast pace domestic thriller.
So bingeable! I really think readers will be able to eat this one up in a day or two. I feel like the whole con-artist theme is having a revival between all of the shows (i.e.: The Tinder Swindler) the books (i.e. Cover Story). I loved that this was a domestic thriller that felt fresh. The characters constantly going back and forth with each other really kept it exciting and kept me guessing. They really felt well-developed and dimensional. I won't hesitate to recommend this to my thriller fan friends. All in all, I think this sophomore novel from Julie Clark is even stronger than her first!
