This is the second book by Julie Clark that I’ve read and y’all, it’s a five star read for sure. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and it is AVAILABLE TODAY!! Happy Pub Day Julie!!
In this book we meet Meg and Kat. Meg, Maggie or Melody are the same person, the person who seeks justice for those women who’ve been wronged. It began when her terminally ill Mom, was conned out of their home by a man named Ron. On a mission to make things right, Meg has arrived back in California to get revenge on Ron. Kat, who initially investigated Meg years ago, has her own vengeance for Meg. But, does Kat really know Meg’s story or has she had it wrong all these years?
This book read fast, just like Julie’s last book. The writing was wonderful and you truly felt like you were inside of the book, experiencing all that these characters did. The story was easy to follow along with and the twists were perfectly placed. I thoroughly enjoyed this read and without a doubt, recommend to you all! Mystery, suspense, drama; it has a little bit for everyone. Five stars!
I was such a fan of The Last Flight and was excited for this one and so glad it didn’t disappoint.
This Is an epic game of cat and mouse as you wonder who is conning who. As the reader you get to decide what is revenge and what is justice. And in what circumstances are you justified in your actions?
I actually liked Meg and Kat even though I wouldn’t normally like those types of people and I credit that to Clark’s writing style. I really wanted to know what happened and kept reading. While this isn’t really a thriller, the way the book is laid out creates a mystery. You meet two women and are told pieces of their past. And as the book progresses, you get more pieces to the puzzle that when fit together may change everything.
I always stop reading at the end of a chapter and this book was really good, in all but one spot, of making me think just one more chapter. Over and over and over again.
This will definitely be one of the buzzy books of the summer.
This one has amazing reviews so far!
This was such a fast paced read! Following the ins and outs of Meg's cons starting with her trying to find a place to live other than her car which started an idea once she recognized someone on the dating app.
This had a lot of misdirection and even our narrator told us narrator's can be unreliable.
Both the females in the story have different directives. Kat blaming her for something that happened in the midst of her first con. But Meg is deep in the con that started it all when they meet irl.
The ending was awesome. Will we get another book or do we just get to make up what happens in our heads? With some thrillers since I don't read that many I don't like when they are still at large but the loose tie that needs to be dealt with at the end is necessary.
Thank you bookmarked and netgalley for the e-ARC for my honest and voluntary review.
This is a fantastic read that I literally could not put down. In fact I binge read this book in one day! I was intrigued from the opening chapter, and I instantly liked both Meg and Kat. The book is told from both POVs and for the most part alternated chapters between the two. This allows the reader to see both sides of the story and understand each woman's motivation, and yet knowing all of this I was still pleasantly surprised at the end of the book with the end con.
Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Landmark for the digital ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. This is my first book by Julie Clark and I am an instant fan of her work.
I LOVED this perfect summer read. It's told in two perspectives: that of Meg, a woman who has been conning men for years and has come back to take down the man responsible for the biggest devastations of her live, and Kat, a woman who was collateral damage in Meg's first con and is determined to expose her. It's got great, well developed characters while still having a speedy plot. It's got great perspectives on justice and friendship. Con artists have been a popular theme in books lately, but this is a unique take on the topic.
This was WOW!! It reminded me so much of a modern-day feeling of Robin Hood. I honestly had a difficult time putting this book down. The author did an excellent job developing her characters and plot. The story was truly masterfully told.
Ms. Clark has created a nonlinear timeline with alternating narrators, that are filled with twists and turns as you read along. This was an excellently written buck with a powerful lead character.
After last years best seller,The Last Flight, I wasn’t sure how Julie Clark could top that, but with this book,I think she really has. Two women, one a con artist with a moral code, and one a journalist who believes she was wronged by the con artist. The story weaves and bobs through a period of their lives when Kat, the journalist wants to take Meg down. The book for me was an easy read, at times uncomfortable, but that was what made it great. It was a game of secrets that kept me guessing, and reading quickly to find out the next cat and mouse game being played. A fabulous read, and a thriller that will hold your interest.
I was a huge fan of Julie Clark's The Last Flight and couldn't wait to dive into The Lies I tell. It's a fast-paced she said/she said story will have you compulsively turning the pages. Who is the con artist and who is getting conned? This is a great domestic thriller that would make a great beach read.
Thank you to SOURCEBOOKS Landmark and NetGalley for this ARC.
This book held my attention from page one until the end! Julie Clark is officially now an auto-buy author for me after 2 books! I loved the interactions between Meg & Kat suggesting a friendship with revenge at the core. The storyline weaves the past and present into a fast paced, binge-worthy thriller! There are some subtle twists and at some point the lines become blurred as to who has a bigger axe to grind. The characters are really well developed even though they have significant issues. I can’t wait to read more from this author!
Very good book! I like this author. Great writing style, characters, & story - very interesting & kept me engaged. Definitely recommend.
I would like to thank NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
I’m going to need a cigarette after finishing this one! The Lies I Tell is an exciting tale, full of characters lying to each other in an attempt to gain the upper hand.
Despite the deceit, Meg and Kat, the two main characters, are both extremely likable and you’ll struggle deciding which woman to root for. I loved every word!
Meg Williams and Kat Reynolds are the central characters in Julie Clark's compelling work of psychological suspense, "The Lies I Tell." Meg is bitter over a scam that cost her mother, Rosie, the home that she loved. Years earlier, Ron Ashton, Rosie's boyfriend, tricked her into signing over her house to him; he subsequently evicted her and her daughter, who had to spend their nights sleeping in the family car. Ever since, Meg has been planning her revenge against Ashton, but meanwhile, she is honing her skills by moving from place to place under assumed names and defrauding men who mistreat the women in their lives.
Kat is an unsuccessful reporter who is fascinated by Meg's exploits, and she is gathering information to write a story about the grifter's schemes. Kat hopes to use this sensational exposé as a springboard to boost her faltering career. Meg and Kat, who take turns narrating, could not be more different. While Meg is a cynical manipulator, Kat is cautious, lacks self-confidence, and is loyal to her irresponsible fiancé.
It is fascinating to watch Meg earn her victims' trust by telling them what they want to hear. Although Meg's behavior is far from admirable, we can understand why she targets men who are selfish and narcissistic. "The Lies I Tell" is an ingeniously plotted, fast-paced, and addictive novel about an individual who uses her good looks, charm, and devious mind to balance the scales of justice.
THE LIES I TELL by Julie Clark is a gripping domestic suspense novel that kept me guessing all the way through. Revenge is at the heart of the story and the lengths two women will go to achieve it are gradually revealed. Meg Williams not only lost her mother as a teenager, but she was forced to live out of her car when her childhood home was swindled away from the family by her mother’s con artist boyfriend. She vows to get revenge no matter what it takes. She learned early that she can infiltrate your life and before you know it, you’ve lost everything. Kat Roberts is a journalist who has been waiting for ten years to expose the woman she blames for a traumatic event that changed her life forever. Now that Meg Williams has returned to town, Kat vows to take her down before her latest con. The two cross paths and become close in unexpected ways, but nothing is exactly as it seems. Told from both women’s points of view, it is hard to tell who is the cat and who is the mouse in this twisty cat-and-mouse game. Full of secrets, lies and manipulation, this fast-paced story was entertaining and enjoyable. Highly recommended! Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the chance to read and review an early copy.
Great writing but it was missing something for me, the pacing was slow until the end which was the best part.
This novel is amazing! The character development is unbelievable and the depth and dimensions of those characters and the plot is masterful. The story is so well crafted that it takes you along for the ride even though you are not sure where you’re going. I will definitely tackle this author’s backlist after reading this book.
“The lies I tell serve a purpose, tipping karma in the right direction. Returning power to those who have lost it…The difference between justice and revenge comes down to who’s telling the story.”
How can you tell when a book is reallyyyyy good? I’ll tell you. It makes you annoyed when life happens and adulting calls and you have to do things besides read your book. And all you want to do is read. Your. Book. This is that book!
Wow! The Lies I Tell, written by the author of The Last Flight, had me stressed out and flipping those pages and getting literal chills by the last paragraph. Told from dual POV, this book dives into the heads of two women who think they have nothing in common but who, in fact, are quite similar. Meg and Kat dance around each other, both believing they are simultaneously conning and being conned, all the while horrible men are falling to pieces in their wake.
I am here for the women empowerment stories lately and this one hits the mark! I shall paraphrase one of my favorite sayings…“Karma. Those who have hurt you will eventually mess up themselves and, if you’re lucky, God will let you watch.” THAT is this book in a nutshell. Here here. 👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you to Netgalley, Sourcebooks Landmark, and the author for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Lies I Tell by Julie Clark is a terrific thriller! It is engaging from page one to the twisty and satisfying conclusion!
As in her previous novel, The Last Flight, two women are the protagonists whose behavior and actions drive the story. Meg is a grifter and con artist, who has used many names and reinvented herself many times. Kat is a former LA Times reporter now writing mindless drivel for internet sites, whose brush with Meg 10 years previously traumatized her, making her motivated her to re-engage Meg and write an expose of Meg’s activities.
This is a strong psychological, character-driven thriller. The lives of Meg and Kat, past and present, are complex and curiously engaging, given that one is a con artist and the other a rather naïve woman married to a flawed man with a gambling addiction. While neither one was particularly likeable I found myself caring about what happens to both of them. I found the story intriguing, as well, with strong writing and an intensity that made it an immersive read.
I recommend this to readers who look for character-driven psychological suspense with a “strong female protagonist” vibe and a very smart plot!
Thank you to Sourcebooks Landmark and NetGalley for the ARC. This is my honest review
Hands down one of the best thrillers I’ve ever read, I read this in one sitting! The ending is amazing and actually made me smile (which never happens for me with a thriller).
Kat and Meg. Two woman with much more in common than they think. A reporter seeking to expose a conwoman gets her whole world turned upside down as she gets sucked down rabbit holes. A conwoman with a concise, although that wasn’t easy to figure out right away. The two meet and become almost friends, yet both are hiding behind lies. Who’s lies are the deepest and what is endgame?
I loved the plot, the pacing, and the characters. Julie Clark absolutely knocks this out of the park. Run, don’t walk, and get yourself a copy of this book!
Thank you to Julie Clark, Netgalley, and Sourcebooks for the chance to read and review this arc in exchange for my honest thoughts.
Well damn if that wasn’t a helluva fun ride!
Con artist Meg Williams has reinvented herself numerous times over the years. Kat Roberts is a journalist who ten years earlier came in contact with Meg and ended up a bit of collateral damage. She’s waited for an opportunity to come into her orbit again and expose her for what she is, and at a swank affair one evening she sees her, and sets a plan in motion.
There was a moment as I read this I thought of the delicious cat and mouse of the first season of #KillingEve. Obviously this isn’t about a psychopath but the rapport between the two women and the curiosity of how it’ll all resolve is playfully reminiscent. This is a fast, smart read, the perfect escape this summer between with two well drawn and interesting women who ultimately might have more in common then they think. Thanks to @sourcebooks for the advance copy!
I read The Last Flight last year and really enjoyed that one. This author loves domestic thrillers about deception between two women. This book was very similar to her previous book. So when I saw that the author was coming out with a new one, I requested for it right away! I was also very happy to see it on BOTM and I knew i had to get a physical copy as well!
Thank you to Netgalley, Source Books and the author Julie Clark for providing me an e-ARC of this book which publishes 6/21/22!
Meg is a con artist who has been telling lies all her life to get what she wants and get by. Kat is a writer who is determined to expose her. Two women of deception whose worlds collide as they both seek justice for the wrong doings of their past.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. This book was a very bingeable read that I finished in about 2-3 sittings! It gave me alot of Inventing Anna vibes (except, you’ll like the con artist so much more here!!) and that show The Imposters. It’s a story about cons, manipulation, revenge and a serious game of cat and mouse. The ending was very satisfying and the characters were well developed. The story was both plot driven and character driven, which made it cumulatively captivating.
Highly recommended for people who are into con artist themed thrillers!
