This cat-and-mouse suspense tale about a con artist and a previous victim out for revenge is engrossing and fast-moving. The conclusion may not be a surprise, but the journey to the end is highly entertaining.
Liked, didn’t love. I would frequently put it down and not feel the need to pick it back up, which is never a good sign.
Loved this twisty thriller! A con woman and the reporter looking to get her big break by uncovering her story is already enough to pull me in, but the way this book evolves from there is just delicious.
One tragic night links Meg and Kat's lives together in a twisted, dangerous knot. For 10 years, Kat has tried everything to find out what happened to Meg. Who she really is. Whether or not she really meant to destroy a stranger's life.
On the surface, Meg might seem like the kind of person who will take advantage of anyone and everyone to get what she wants. But her motives aren't what they seem. Kat will have to risk getting close to her to find out the truth for herself.
What makes this story brilliant is that it uses our collective obsession with con artists and scams as the foundation, not a crutch, for a surprisingly unique story about two women who severely misinterpret and misunderstand each other. But because it's the classic "here's what she did and why" story, it hooks you. You want to put the book down to take it all in, to take a breath, but you can't
I read the whole thing in a day. That wasn't my intention. But it's just that good, that captivating, that FUN.
I think you're going to love it.
The Lies I Tell by author Julie Clark is set to release on June 21, 2022 by Sourcebooks. This book started out a little on the slow side for me. The author had to tell the backstory so the reader could understand the whole of the story. But once it ramped up, it really got good! It’s the story about 2 women, Meg and Kat. Meg appears to be an evil con artist who’s out to screw everybody over. Kat is a journalist, who wants to write a big piece so’s to be noticed and appreciated for her work. As the story plays out, you learn that Kat’s desire is to expose Meg because she feels that she is partly responsible for a rape that happened to her years before. In the beginning, I really didn’t like the character of Meg, I thought she was evil and twisted, but once I learned her motive for being this way, I was actually cheering her on. This is a really well thought out thriller that can be classified under several genres. It’s suspenseful, mysterious and quite the psychological thriller! This was my first time reading this author but now she’s one I’m going to keep an eye out for in the future. I strongly suggest you grab a copy of this once it releases because you’ll be glad you did. It’s a great story of justice and revenge and the epilogue is what really surprised me. I loved it! The author couldn’t have ended it any better. I’d like to thank Sourcebooks and NetGalley for granting my wish and giving me the chance to read and review this book. I enjoyed it immensely and can’t recommend it enough. I’m giving this a 5 star rating!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Landmark for gifting me a digital ARC of the new thriller by Julie Clark - 5 stars!
Meg Williams is a con artist, meticulously researching her victims and infiltrating their lives so that they never see what's coming. By the time they do, she's gone. Kat Roberts is a journalist whose life was changed 10 years ago by Meg. When a google alert pops up that Meg is back in her town, Kat seizes the opportunity to befriend Meg with the idea of taking her down. But what or who is real?
Go into this one as blind as possible because you'll love all the twisty elements of figuring out who you can trust and why people are doing what they are. I loved these characters - especially Meg, who has a con artist shouldn't be your favorite character! I loved how everything came together in the end - don't miss this one!
A fantastic read! Two main point of views, takes us into the life of a con artist and the woman who has invested her time in learning more about her.
Without any spoilers, I have to say this was amazing! Go add this to your TBR!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.
Con artist books, as well as TV shows and real life, seem to be all the rage right now. So this story is very timely, and SO well done!
Meg Williams loses her mother while in high school. Her mother had been taken advantage by a con man, they were homeless, and her mother went downhill from there. Meg lives in her car and does what she has to to survive, determined one to to get revenge on the con man. As time goes on, she realizes in order to make that happen, she has to become a bit of a con artist herself. But with a twist - a “girl code” she learned from a high school classmate gives her a bit of a moral compass and her targets are men who "deserve it".
Thenthere’s Kat Roberts, a reporter whose life was turned upside down when she followed a tip from none other than Meg herself ten years ago. She's working on worthess pieces for magazines, lives with and is engaged to her boyfriend, who is recovering from a gambling problem, and is still trying to find a way to get revenge on Meg.
As the story unfolds, their paths cross and the narration alternates between Meg and Kat, going back and forth in time. It takes some time to set up the premise of what is happening. But you will catch on and then you will be in for quite a ride. There were some interesting twists. And once their paths cross, the suspense becomes intense and the tension between the two will have you on the edge of your seat!
Both characters are well developed and you will be invested. Oddly enough, I liked Meg more and just felt sorry for her. While yes, she was a con artist, it began when she was still so young and just trying to make the best of the hand she was dealt. I felt she saw herself as somewhat of a Robin Hood for women who had been wronged!
Many thanks to Netgalley and Sourcebooks Landmark for an advance copy in exhange for my honest review.
Meg Williams is a con artist, one that journalist, Kat Roberts, feels ruined her life a decade ago. When Kat sees her across a crowded room all these years later, she’s more than ready to expose Meg. Kat manages to befriend Meg as she tries to figure out just what con Meg is planning next before she disappears again, but who’s really conning who? A cat and mouse game follows with a story that will have you hooked from start to finish.
Julie Clark’s first book,The Last Flight, was a riveting story based around 2 female characters. As soon as I finished reading it, I knew I’d found my new favorite fiction author. I’ve been anxiously awaiting her second book, The Lies I Tell, and finished it in one day. This one is also revolves around 2 female characters, unforgettable ones. Julie Clark kept me intrigued throughout this book, but once again wrote an ending that came as a delicious surprise.
Kat Roberts, an aspiring journalist, took a chance on a tip and it ruined her life. The tip came from Meg Williams, a con artist who has also gone by the names Megan, Melody and Maggie. After years of redefining herself, Meg has returned. She is seeking revenge on Ron Ashton, a developer who swindled Meg and her mother ten years ago, making them homeless. This is Kat’s chance to expose Meg, but first she must find a way to befriend her. Meg has set herself up as a realtor so Kat poses as a potential buyer. Scott, Kat’s fiancé, is a police detective who warns her that she is getting too close to Meg. He blames Meg for attacks on Kat’s finances, claiming that Meg is on to her. Scott has had problems of his own in the past and Meg believes the attacks originated with him. With Ron running for political office and the elections arriving soon time is growing short for Meg to activate her plan and get her revenge. Throwing Scott off her trail and keeping Kat close becomes a priority.
Meg is not a typical grifter. She sees the injustice around her and plans her cons to not only punish those who prey on the weak, but also to assist their victims. As Kat investigates Meg’s background, she finds a number of people who were grateful for her intervention. Meg is cool under pressure and researches her victims so that she is well prepared. Her biggest regret is that she can never keep the friends that she has made once her con succeeds. Working with Meg will also bring changes to Kat’s life, but not necessarily ones that you expect.
Julie Clark’s The Lies I Tell takes you through some of Meg’s elaborate cons. Meg and Kat are both characters who have been damaged but manage to find the strength to survive and succeed. Clark has provided a story that will keep you entertained from the first to the last page. I would like to thank NetGalley and Sourcebooks Landmark for providing this book or my review.
YES!!!! THIS is what I want in a thriller!!!! I read a lot of thrillers and as such - I think I’ve become fairly difficult to thrill. So many times a story feels too slow or too far fetched or any of a million other things. But The Lies I Tell is just what I want in a thriller!
This is the story of two women who first met ten years ago. Meg is a con artist who got away that time and Kat is the reporter who was determined to catch her. We get the story of what happened in both timelines and from both women.
I don’t want to say anything more but if you’re looking for a great thriller, pick this one up!! Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the advance reading copy.
CW: sexual assault, forced eviction, gambling addition, men doing terrible things
The Lies I Tell is Julie Clark’s next best seller. This is a captivating domestic thriller that will grab you from the very beginning and not let go until the very end!! This is cat and mouse at its very best!!! Parks packs a powerful punch with this story!! This is as twisted as it gets with an unforeseeable ending that will drop your jaw!!! I highly recommend this one…..you do not want to miss out on it!!
Thank you NetGalley, Sourcebooks and Julie Clark for an advanced copy of this enthralling book in exchange for my honest review.

The Lies I Tell is a non-stop mind game between two damaged but determined women seeking restitution. Meg Williams cannot forget how she was suddenly homeless as a teen; Kat Roberts cannot forget the night that forever changed her life. Meg is a con artist while Kat is a journalist, and Kat has been tracking Meg for ten years. Julie Clark has crafted an intriguing cat and mouse game revealed in two narratives over different time periods with twists and turns to keep the reader engaged. Although the novel is a definite page turner, what makes it compelling are the characters. As Kat moves closer to Meg, the tension grows as does the complexity of these women and their relationship. Highly recommended. Thanks to Sourcebooks Landmark and NetGalley for an ARC in return for an honest review.
Two very different women trying to right past wrongs. Or are they all that different? This one will keep you wondering all the way to the end.
A twisty cat and mouse game between two women- a con woman and a journalist. No spoilers! Meg's life changed overnight and for the worse when Rodney, now running for political office, conned her mother out of their family home. She's spent all the years since plotting his downfall. She's run con jobs across the country against other men who did women wrong. Kat first encountered Meg when Meg took down a pedophile high school principal, but Meg took something from her too. Now, a chance encounter puts Meg back on Kat's scope even as Kat is struggling with her relationship with Scott, a fraud detective with a serious gambling problem. This moves back and forth in time and between the two women in a complex dance where you will find yourself, against the grain, actually rooting for Meg in spots. Clark does an excellent job of raising doubts about both Meg and Scott. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. I was a huge fan of The Flight - she's managed to do it again. I thought I knew where this was going but I was wrong- always the mark of an excellent read.
This book is a definite must read for the summer. It is a totally fascinating plot and hard to put down. Told from the perspectives of Meg who is a con artist with a conscience and Kat a reporter trying to catch her in a lie. The tug of war they play as the lie and scheme is brilliant. The author has done a really magnificent job of keeping the reader glued to the pages to see what will occur. This is definitely a book to own.
Thank you to Sourcebooks and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
The Lies I Tell by Julie Clark is a fast-paced thriller that you won't be able to put down! The story revolves around two women: Meg Williams and Kat Roberts. Meg is a con artist who has reinvented herself time and time again. Kat Roberts has been waiting for her to pop up again. It's been years since Meg ruined her life, and Kat is ready to expose her for the con artist that she is. To do this, she will have to get close to Meg. Can she con the original con artist?
Here is a captivating excerpt from the opening chapter:
"She stands across the room from me, in a small cluster of donors, talking and laughing. A jazz quartet plays in a corner, the bouncing, slipping notes dancing around us, a low undertone of class and money. Meg Williams. I take a sip of wine, savoring the expensive vintage, the weight of the crystal glass, and I watch her. There are few photographs of her in existence—a grainy senior portrait from an old high school yearbook, and another image pulled from a 2009 YMCA staff directory—but I recognized her immediately. My first thought: She’s back. Followed closely by my second: Finally.
As soon as I saw her, I tucked my press credentials into my purse and kept to the perimeter of the room. I’ve been to all of Ron Ashton’s campaign events in the past three months, watching and waiting for Meg to make her appearance—called there by a Google Alert I set ten years ago."
Overall, The Lies I Tell is an unputdownable thriller that will appeal to fans of Netflix's Inventing Anna or Cover Story. One highlight of this book is how fast-paced it is. I couldn't stop turning the pages to see what happened next. Another highlight of this book is how it features two great protagonists. The story mixed in a bunch of intrigue and lies, and it was hard to see who was conning who. Trigger warning: sexual assault. If you're intrigued by the excerpt above, or if you're a fan of thrillers in general, I highly recommend checking out this book when it comes out in June!
The Lies I Tell, Julie Clark's latest release, is a quick-paced cat and mouse game that will keep readers turning the pages! Kat is a former journalist-turned content writer who left investigative reporting ten years ago but never forgot what would have been her biggest story. Meg, a charismatic con-man, has finally returned to where it all began-Los Angeles. When Kat spots her at a politician's fundraiser she knows this is her chance but Meg has bigger plans. Meg uses her marks to impact a form of karma-each has been chosen to right a specific wrong. When Kat inserts herself into Meg's life things take a dramatic change. Told from alternating perspectives and timelines this is a perfect summer read and Clark's best novel to date! Pick this one up today-you will not be disappointed.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this arc in exchange for my honest feedback.
This book is about two women, Meg Williams and Kat Roberts who have known one another for a lot longer than either will admit. Meg has always been a grifter, living out of her car, using men to shelter her; she has a knack for getting what she wants and morphing into who she needs to be – what role she needs to play in order to manipulate people. Kat has been waiting for the right moment to execute her revenge on the woman who ruined her life and when the two women end up at the same political fundraiser together – Meg, now posing as a real estate agent, and Kat, a journalist, the game of cat and mouse begins. But defining who is the cat and who is the mouse in this situation is complicated, because both women are intelligent and out to right the wrongs that other people have brought upon them. A novel with a lot of delicious twists and turns, but also some real character exploration, The Lies I Tell is a great read. Thank you to Sourcebooks and NetGalley for the advanced review copy.
