The Lies I tell is a Domestic Thriller from Julie Clark.
"Meg has a lot of names - Meg, Maggie, Melody - whatever it takes to get close to her mark. Because she's the one doing the taking now. No more sleeping in her van and taking showers and doing laundry at the gym. Now she's after one man - the one who took everything from her family.
Kat used to be a reporter - until Meg ruined her life. Now Kat is on the hunt for a story - about a woman grifter who leaves a trail of anger and confusion and empty bank accounts behind.
But is it revenge...or justice?"
This story is told through the POV of the two women - Meg and Kat. They interact, but neither knows the full story of the other. Kat has a husband dealing with a gambling addiction and trust issues. Meg just wants what is rightfully hers. I found myself pulling for Meg because of the bad hand she was dealt. And because of what seems to be her reasons.
A couple of terrible things happen to Kat.. Clark puts her in a low place.
But even though the ending is a unexpected I still like it.
Fast-paced read from Clark. I liked this one.
Two women, both set to seek revenge. One, a con artist, the other a struggling journalist. Meg is a con artist hell bent on seeking revenge on the males who feel they can do whatever they want to get what they want, be damned who they hurt in the process. Meg can lie her way through anything and assimilate into your world without you knowing it. Kat is a struggling journalist who was trying to grasp the story break of her career when Meg sent her to her worst nightmare. When the two collide, pretending to befriend the other, their worlds will change, but is it for the better, or will revenge win out. I loved Julie Clark's book The Last Flight, so I had high hopes for this book. Personally, I like The Last Flight better, but that does not take anything away from this book. It was just a suspenseful and exciting. Thank you, NetGalley for the eARC. 4 stars
I absolutely loved this! I have a thing for con artist stories and also love reading from the perspective of the “bad guy” so this was right up my alley. I loved the alternating POVs between Meg and Kat. I enjoyed the timeline shifts too. This wasn’t really a thriller - but I thought it was suspenseful at times. I really just enjoyed watching the story unfold and go in a direction I wasn’t expecting. I read this so quickly and was entertained the entire time.
Two women who are both lying about who they are- can Meg finish this last con or will Kat finally put all the pieces together to expose Meg for who she is.
This book will keep you turning the pages to find out what happens next. Although this is my first Julie Clark read, it won’t be my last. I enjoyed the twists in this book and following Meg & Kat to see how their stories unfold.
Who would have thought that a con artist could be so personable? I instantly connected with both Meg and Kat, and I couldn't wait to see where their stories ended. This thriller was a deeply engrossing display of women taking back some power from men who wronged them, and I loved every bit of it.
"The difference between justice and revenge comes down to who's telling the story."
Julie Clark... *starts slow clapping*. I haven’t been this freaking amped about a book in a while. This was just an absolute 5 star read.
The Lies I Tell is a compelling, intriguing, complex, and unputdownable. The two main characters are multi-faceted, especially Meg, who is a female con-artist/vigilante out to seek justice in the most intriguing ways. I loved reading about the cons and how ingenious and avenging they were. Meg was such an interesting character and I just ended up loving her!
Kat played such an important supporting role and showed that sometimes actions have affects that are widespread and that you may have never expected. I loved her complex relationship with Meg and the strange but true friendship that they formed.
I loved Clark's last novel, The Last Flight, and I loved The Lies I Tell even more. She has become an auto-buy author for me! AND THE CAMEO from TLF in the scene in the airport. It's a blink and you'll miss it type of thing but man, when you see it! "Two women working together are a force to be reckoned with."
Read this if you like:
- Multiple POVs
- Fast-paced novels
- Suspense Thrillers
- Minimal twists (but still a GREAT story)
- Con-artist storylines
- Female empowerment
- Women helping women
- Men getting their comeuppance
- Female badassery
Thank you to NetGalley, Sourcebooks Landmark, and the author for the opportunity to read and review this book before it's publication date! This is no way affected my review and all opinions are my own.
After reading and loving Julie Clark’s previous novel, The Last Flight, I had high hopes for The Lies I Tell. My hopes were exceeded! This one was full of twists and turns on every page. It had con artists, unreliable narrators, cat and mouse games, complicated female friendships, manipulation, revenge, and so much more. I couldn’t put it down! I’m giving this one 4 stars. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!
I really enjoyed The Last Flight by Julie Clark, so when I saw I could read The Lies I Tell right now on NetGalley, I didn't hesitate!
Meg uses various names, depending on what town she's in and the person who has caught her interest. She claims she's not a con artist, but rather someone who sets out to right a wrong.
Kat is a journalist about to break a big story wide open. But her path crosses with Meg's and her life is changed forever. Kat makes a promise to herself to find out who Meg really is and expose her for what she is.
This book grabbed me right from the beginning. Normally it takes quite a few pages to capture my attention, but this book caught it right away! I found myself constantly pulling out my tablet to read just to see what happened.
This book is a fast-paced page turner. It's full of lies, half-truths, and a lot of secrets people don't want out. I loved that it was a mystery/thriller with absolutely no blood or gore.
It was well written and I just couldn't wait to figure out what Meg's ultimate end game was. I highly recommend this book.

I will leave a review on Amazon and B&N on June 21st.
I enjoyed this book! The characters were entertaining, and I really enjoyed the backstory of what is happening in the book. I look forward to reading more books by this author because I enjoyed her writing style.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher and am under no obligation to leave a favorable review the opinions expressed here are my own.
In the past ten years, con artist Meg Williams has had many names and lived in many places. Now, it’s time for her last job, and it’s personal. Can struggling journalist Kat Roberts expose Meg before her next victim loses everything?
This fast-paced, suspense-filled thriller sucked me in and I didn’t want to put this book down! The cat and mouse game between Meg and Kat is addictive. It kept me guessing about what was really going on and who had the upper hand.
I was equally rooting for Meg and Kat. They are both strong, complex women who have plans to seek justice for past wrongs. I loved how this story unfolded, and the ending was very satisfying.
The Lies I Tell isn’t your average thriller with all kinds of twists and turns, but this spin on revenge is entertaining and engrossing.
Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Landmark for the early digital copy. All thoughts and opinions in this voluntary review are my own.
Two women. Many aliases.
This book is a true game of cat and mouse. Both Kat and Meg are lying about who they are.. Meg has been lying her whole life about who she really is. She has been burned and now she is out for revenge. Kat is a reporter, determined to uncover the truth about Meg, no matter the cost.
I loved how this story was told through multiple timelines, and both Kat and Meg's POV. They are lying to each other so it is fun to see both sides of the story. I loved the short chapters that kept the reader wanting more. This is so crucial in a mystery like this...I need to be intrigued to keep going.
I don't really know what genre this fits into but I don't think calling this a thriller is fair. It's more of a psychological mystery. Who is Meg really? What brought her to this point in her life?
I loved the way the backstories were weaved into this book. It was right about when you were wondering what had happened that we were treated to more of the story.
I love Julie Clark's writing. Although I did love The Last Flight more, I truly enjoyed this one.
“ The difference between justice and revenge comes down to who’s telling the story”
✔️ I loved Meg - it’s been a while since I’ve so loved a con artist !
✔️ I found Kat a bit more difficult to connect with at the beginning ; but as the story progresses, she definitely grew on me - and that ending !
✔️ definitely page turner with lots of twists and turns and I never knew what was going to happen next

OH MY LANTA! THIS BOOK.
Okay, lets be real here, I always go into a book dead ass blind. I don’t know the genre, but can always kinda tell by the title and cover…figured this would definitely be a suspense and boy WAS IT SUSPENSEFUL!
While I started this a few days ago, I just didn’t feel like reading. I couldn’t get in the headspace. But yesterday, I felt good enough to read and BAM, what a good book to get out of a mental slump in. Saturday read about 10% and the rest of the 90% on Sunday!!!!
……
What I liked :
✨ fast paced. I was hooked right away.
✨ the characters. I NEEDED to know who Meg was and how her and Kat were connected.
✨ the suspense. What was going to happen next.
✨ the twist(s). There were not just one but TWO twists that had my heart racing and left my mouth gaping wide open
✨ THE END. WHAT 👏🏻 A 👏🏻 GREAT 👏🏻 ENDING 👏🏻
What I disliked :
👎🏻 there were no trigger warnings at the beginning. TW include : sexual assault, drugging drinks, and rape.
👎🏻 there was a bit of miscommunication
👎🏻 a few ties that were tied up that maybe should have been explained a bit more.
Julie Clark has done it again! I loved her previous book and man did I love this one. A female con artist? I read that and knew I was going to enjoy this one. It was a blast with not many twist but an extremely satisfying novel. This might be one of my favorite thrillers I’ve read in a while!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Quick, fast paced, multiple views points, non-linear timeline and twists and turns, this book has it all, you will love both protagonists! I actually thought this was a feel good read by the end!
I loved Julie Clark's book The Last Flight, and was very excited to read her latest release. Overall a great, fast pace read, however it didn't have the wow factor I thought it would. Was waiting for a crazy twist but never got it. Still a good book and enjoyed reading it.
Wow! What a twisted journey this was!
I loved this con story more than I could ever imagine. The con within a con intrigued me and with each additional bit of information shared with the reader, I became more engrossed in the story of these two ladies.
While Kat and Meg each had things that were undesirable for a heroine in a story, they were both some of the most interesting characters I’ve read in quite some time. I was sure that I would find myself harshly judging Meg, despite her early beginnings. There were definitely times that her actions merited that judgment. However, as her journey is slowly revealed and each layer of her past and the progression that brought her into the current time and place is exposed, I actually was cheering her on. And I didn’t have a clue how it was all going to end.
Kat was a bit harder to connect with, which was surprising considering her place in the story. However, a twist here, another there, and I couldn’t wait to see what Kat’s end result was going to be. I have to confess, I had a lump in my throat as I read those last few lines.
This has a slower pace to it, but was impossible to put down. Nothing is repetitive and while this isn’t filled with drama, danger, and lots of action, it was fraught with tension as these characters move through the inevitable actions they’ve either designed or hunted for. I highly recommend this to those who enjoy a mystery within a mystery and unique characters that you’ll never forget.
This one was an incredibly well written and entertaining book! I loved the author’s writing style as well as the storyline itself. Highly recommend!
Holy Mackerel! What a twisting, deceptive, captivating book this was! Which makes it a quick read because you don't want to put it down.....waiting to see what happens next. The story revolves around two main female characters, Meg Williams and Kat Roberts. Each has revenge on their mind.....and yet as Meg feels "The difference between justice and revenge comes down to who's telling the story." Chapters introduce the characters in their present day....then go back 1o years and 2 years to tell us their stories that brought them together. Meg, who researches and finds her targets, is suddenly the target of Kat. Funny thing.....they each know the other is lying about who they really are........and yet a cautious friendship builds between them. Its difficult to not like Meg and to actually cheer her on in some of the actions she takes on her self-justified "get-even" actions. And Kat, while being victimized herself, feels justified in going after Meg for what she feels was her part in a life-shattering event years ago. This was a really enjoyable read....fast-paced with a very satisfying ending. Didn't see that coming is all I can say. Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Landmark. for the opportunity to read and review this advance reader copy. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. #theliesitell #NetGalley.
Best revenge book I've ever read! The power of a woman who's been wrong should never be underestimated!!
Great characters - totally relatable! Loved Meg - even if she is the bad girl. Great ending - but could there be a sequel? I'd totally be in line to read!
