The Lies I Tell was my first book by Julie Clark and after finishing this one I quickly made plans to finally read her debut thriller, The Last Flight! I love multiple POVs within a suspense story because not only does that keep me engaged but also I think it helps sprinkle clues from the various characters to lead you to an exciting ending. And phew I honestly don't think I would have predicted such an outcome! I could totally see this play out as a limited series on Hulu or Amazon because there is enough substance in the story to entertain an audience on the silver screen. The revenge and deception plot was juicy and I would love to see an actor bring Meg Williams to life. This is a perfect book to pick up for a beach vacation or a day relaxing by the pool!

Julie Clark does it again. In The Lies I Tell, Clark is back with a dual storyline book with the fast-pacing, social commentary on gender & society and strong female protagonists. I read this cover to cover in one sitting during my flight to Hawaii and am now recommending it to everyone.

Kat Roberts has been waiting for ten years for the women who ruined her life to return. Meg Williams has returned. She seems to have as many secrets as she does aliases. She's a con artist who creates a new identity each time she has a mark or a job to execute. Their stories are connected and they both need the other one to get what they want. So, they're working together, but keeping secrets and seems thing to be escalating to the point where they will explode soon.

It was a fascinating story that challenged pre-conceived notions around women being con artists as well as what her motivations truly are this time around. I love the way that Julie writes stories that connect women's complicated stories and include so many of the hardships & trauma that are normal to womanhood. If you're concerned about triggers, sexual assault is definitely mentioned, but even more so are references and examples of manipulation, narcissism and other mistreatment of women.

One thing I love about Clark's thrillers is that they're often very thoughtful about the women's issues that they address and instead of playing into the cliches of woman as unreliable narrators, she portrays women as having agency, creativity and cleverness.

I loved Julie Clark's previous novel, The Last Flight, so when I saw this I jumped right on it. Not only was it as good but dare I say it was even better! Lots of twists and turns, surprises and a fantastic ending! She's easily becoming a favorite!

What’s better than a book with a strong female protagonist? A book with TWO of them! Kat Roberts is a journalist whose career is languishing around the bottom of the profession, as she write puff pieces, clickbait, and top-ten lists for pennies-per-word. Once a promising investigative journalist, Kat’s life was destroyed in one horrible night ten years ago. Following a lead on a hot story put her in a precarious situation, and Kat has never stopped blaming the tipster. Enter Meg Williams – a female con artist, scamming men and carefully plotting to destroy them is her life’s work. She’s been flying under the radar for the last decade, moving from con to con before she can get caught. Now she’s back in Los Angeles, about to pull off the biggest and most personal scheme yet.

The suspense in “The Lies I Tell” is nothing short of spectacular. In a genre where not much feels new, here comes a truly original story line and the most complex, multi-layered characters I have come across in a long time. You might expect to hate Meg, but you’ll get as sucked in by her as Kat does, and you can’t help but root for her. This twisty tale kept me guessing the entire time, and the ending was incredibly satisfying! I wish we knew what would happen next – is it too much to wish for a sequel?!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Landmark for providing me an advance copy of this book.

You do not want to miss a single word or page of this book!! It’s a real cat and mouse game as to who best is the con artist - Meg who is conning everyone and Kat who is conning Meg for a story. The ending is fantastic!

The Lies I Tell by Julie Clark is an amazing, thought-provoking domestic thriller that pits two women against each other as they both aim to seek revenge and justice. Someone has been conned and someone is out to be ruined. But what if they’re wrong? Someone must pay the price.

As we follow these relatable, hardworking women, we are peppered with knowledge that answers some of the missing pieces in their stories and also gives us new, vital information. Both women are wrapped up in lies and/or unvalidated beliefs about each other which leaves the reader on edge as we learn the truth about what really happened.

I enjoyed how the author wrote about two equally strong protagonists, as she did with her 2020 book club favorite The Last Flight. I can hardly imagine how the author created this timeline and outline for this book with all the lies and twists to keep track of. I must admit that having two main characters that have short, three letter first names was a bit confusing at first.

I really enjoyed this quick, suspenseful and enjoyable read.

This book is addicting and totally absorbing! Between trying to figure out what Meg's big con was, whether Kat was going to catch her, and whether or not I should trust Scott, I couldn't put this book down. I'm a big fan of Julie Clark's work, and she really outdid herself here!

The story follows Kat as she tries to expose Meg Williams, a con artist who upended her life ten years earlier.

Julie Clark does it again with her fast-paced storytelling featuring strong female characters. She flips the script on the unreliable female narrator and gives us Meg, an anti-heroine who is smart, cunning and a fighter. We get alternating narration between the past and present and Kat and Meg's points of view, revealing ulterior motives as our leads seek justice from people who abuse their power.

I don't want to give too much away, but will say I highly recommend picking it up when it hits shelves June 21.

Thank you NetGalley and Sourcebooks Landmark for my advance copy.

4/5 ⭐️!!! I really enjoyed this book. I have not read Clark’s other novel, The Flight, but after this book—I’ll have to check it out!! From the very beginning, this book grasped my attention. I WAS HOOKED! After reading the first 40% of the book, I really wished that the past/present went back and forth instead of all at once, but I think it was a good move!!!

Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy, in exchange for an honest review.

This was good read the building of suspense. The end was nota huge episode, but an interesting one. The storyline of a young lady spending years trying to get revenge on someone who wronged her Mom and her decades previously leads to some interesting ideas. As Meg tries to get revenge, other stories emerge. The book is a good read, kept me interested although I kept waiting from an unexpected turn. Most of the twists were not surprising.

Sometimes I have to remind myself that the author is a newish author (sophomore book) because her writing of thrillers has the hook from the start that is missing in so many books I pick up from this genre.

I loved The Last flight, it was on my top of the year list, so it was without question that I would ask (beg) for an arc for this book. And it did not disappoint.

I struggle to review this without spoilers so what I am going to say is that the author has captured the reader in a spot in which the character we aim to hate, becomes the character we admire. It’s not what she does but why she does it.

So good. 4.5 ⭐️

It may have been ten years but Kat Roberts is finally going to get her revenge on the person she thinks is responsible for ruining her life. This was a fast, fun and easy read. The characters are complex and descriptive with their faults and strengths. The plot is intriguing! The more I read the more I was sucked in! It's a quick pace story with two timeliness but it moves smoothly between the past and the present. Definitely a book that will have you turning the pages long after your bedtime!

Meg Williams is back. So is Melody Wilde and Maggie Littleton; all the same name for one elusive, female con artist. She takes down men who deserve to lose everything. Kat was collateral damage along the way and she’s ready to take Meg down.

I actually enjoyed this more than the Last Flight which I wasn’t expecting! This book was the ultimate cat and mouse chase with the two characters but trying to get one step ahead of each other. It ended exactly as I thought, and hoped, it would end. There weren’t many surprises in the story, but that’s okay.. it was still entertaining as hell!

“I’m struck with the irony of two women, each of them trying to spin a web of lies and manipulation around the other, never knowing whose strings are wrapped around whom.”

The Lies I Tell comes out 6/21.

This book was great! I really enjoyed this authors other book [book:The Last Flight|52652923] and jumped eagerly into this one. So happy to discover I loved it just as much (maybe more?) than the first book I'd read from her.

There is something so intriguing about two main characters living divergent lives (in a way) and Kat and Meg are those characters. I loved how everything resolved in the end as well, which helps, but I felt like the journey was suspenseful in a different way than I'd expected. Not really due to danger, exactly, but to a sense of foreboding. Will she get away with it? Do I want her to? What will happen next? That type of thing.

I loved the female con-man ('er woman?) aspect of it as well and loved seeing Kat triumph in her own struggles.

I'd definitely recommend this to those willing to take a less suspenseful and more anticipatory ride through this book. It's well written with fleshed characters you really care about!

My rating: 4.6*

! There is some adult language in this one.

The Lies I Tell was on my most anticipated books of 2022 lists and wow, just wow, it did not disappoint. It is a psychological thriller about a con artist who is really the righter of wrongs and the journalist who is trying to get her story. This book is twisted, suspenseful and just so perfectly executed. It is fast paced with such complex characters with so many layers that are slowly peeled away making them more and more relatable. And as an added bonus, they were all over my part of Los Angeles which was so fun to read. Pub day is June 21!! This will be the book of the summer.

Loved this cat and mouse game between Meg- a total con artist- and the writer who's trying to expose her, Kat. A fast read that was totally "unputdownable". Highly recommend.

Do you need an unputdownable book to pull you out of your reading slump?
Read this book.

5 stars

I was 100% invested in this story from page one. I read 35% in one sitting.

Meg is just like the Tinder Swindler, but with a very good cause.

She is tired of powerful corrupt men taking advantage of innocent people. She hunts them down, researches every little thing about them, and smoothly makes her way into their lives.

“The lies I tell serve a purpose, tipping karma in the right direction. Returning power to those who have lost it.”

This time, Meg’s in the most important mission of her life. To avenge her mother by taking justice against the man who took everything from them years ago.

This book is AMAZING. It’s stunningly written and I was cheering for Meg the whole time. I love her!!!

Wow! Just when I thought The Last Flight was my favorite Julie Clark writes this one!
The character development of Meg Williams the con artist and Kat Roberts the journalist blew my mind. I could tell from the first two pages of the book this was going to be a wild ride and it didn’t disappoint!
I found myself sucked into the story of Meg and Kat the con artist then the journalist planning to expose Meg but having to become friends in the process. It made the book very intense.
In the meantime Kat is dealing with problems of her own with her fiancé Scott at home.
I highly recommend this book, especially if you were a fan of her latest!
