Fun thriller about two women with very different backgrounds that come together for vengeance.
This book also brings to light the topic of gambling addiction. The plot uses flashbacks and alternating points of view to propel the story forward with twists and turns.

Thank you to @bookmarked and @bibliolifestyle for my gifted copy of The Lies I Tell, by Julie Clark! This exciting thriller is out now. In this book, we meet Meg Williams, along with her many aliases. Meg is a con artist who is cunning and deceiving, and has likely taken everything from you before you even realized it. We also have Kat, who is determined to expose Meg and her many lies. However, once they meet again, things are definitely not as they seem.

I thought this was a very well done thriller, especially with the multiple points of view and timeline that jumped around. The timeline made it even more interesting, and brought me more into the mystery! Both Meg and Kat made for such interesting characters (that were constantly trying to stay one step ahead of each other), which makes this book ripe for great discussion.

BOOK REVIEW
The Lies I Tell, @julieclarkauthor
Pub date: June 21, 2022
302 pages
@sourcebooks

I gave Julie Clarkโ€™s The Last Flight a solid 4 star rating after reading it with my book club in the summer, and this was even better IMO.

Clark writes such intelligent and crafty women into her stories. So many authors are beginning to focus on women as the antihero, especially in thrillers (though, I donโ€™t think โ€œthrillerโ€ exactly suits this book), and Clark does it so well.

Thereโ€™s no murder in this one, but Meg (or Maggie or Melody?), a con-artist taking from men who are used to doing the taking. Will she get caught?

This was a super quick and energizing reading experience. I will absolutely read anything Julie Clark writes.

Thanks @netgalley for giving this e-book in exchange for my honest review โœŒ๏ธ

Another great thriller from Julie Clark. Characters are complex and plot was layered and deceptive. Really enjoyed how it slowly unraveled. Plus, the ending was perfect. Will definitely recommend.

Julie Clark has become one of my must read authors. This book was so fast paced and interesting. Meg is a con artist and Kat is a journalist who is trying to take her down. Meg's preparation before taking on a mark is so detailed and she has a plan for any possible thing that can happen. She is slick, smart and the perfect bad girl. As Kat goes undercover and befriends Meg she starts to really know Meg and see some of her reasons for picking the marks she choses. A really good book about two women with different backgrounds, interesting stories, and I just couldn't put it down!

โ€œLike standing under the Eiffel tower โ€“โ€“ when youโ€™re inside of it itโ€™s just a bunch of crisscrossed steel. Itโ€™s only from a distance you can see it for what it really is.โ€œ

โ€œThe lies I tell serve a purpose, tipping karma in the right direction. Returning power to those who have lost it.โ€œ

โ€œThe difference between justice and revenge comes down to whoโ€™s telling the story.โ€

Just like The Last Flight, Julie Clark gives us another great read! If you want to plow through your reading goalsโ€ฆI feel like sheโ€™s the author to help you do it.

This novel has strong female characters with a slightly off balance moral compass in the best possible way. ๐Ÿ”ฅ ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป

You wonโ€™t be able to help yourself, youโ€™ll root for the villain and be left satisfied in the end.๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป

I love Julie Clarkโ€™s way of tying everything up at the end while still leaving the story open ended. Those are my favorite kind of endings. Satisfied and curious.

Enjoy the ride!

Love Love Loved this book! I really loved the authors first book and I was so excited to see her coming out with another. I'm so glad I got to read this one early and I am looking forward to her next one!

An interesting revenge thriller. I found myself cheering for the woman being revenged-upon more than the woman doing the revenge.

I really loved this woman-centered twisty thriller - it kept me guessing until the end and had engaging character development throughout! Highly recommend!

I really enjoyed the author's previous book - The Last Flight - so I was very excited to read this one. Surprisingly, I enjoyed The Lies I Tell more than The Last Flight. The characters were well-developed and I could understand their motivations. Overall, this was a great book that I couldn't put down!

It took me a minute to get into this book - I had to start over and pay attention to the characters. After paying better attention, it still took me a bit to follow along with the storyline. Things started to come together and take a turn about a quarter into the book and then I was hooked. The pace was fast and intriguing. The characters were relatable and interesting. I don't feel like the story had a strong ending and read less like a roller coaster and more of a slow burn to the end. The ending made the reader think about the twist and consider right and wrong, but giving away the ending would be giving away a key component to what made this a good read.

I binged this book. I LOVED the con artist theme. The novel had strong character development. I was addicted to Meg - I found her so intriguing. As much as I tried, I couldnโ€™t dislike her. The novel is a slow burn thriller, but it carries a lot of emotion.

The ending was really well done. Iโ€™m really glad that I read this one.

That you NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Rating 4.5

This book was so enjoyable! It was a fast paced thriller that had you rooting for both characters. It was really well written and the characters were so well done. It was told in dual pov and I could easily tell who was talking when. I wish I could say more but this is one you must go into blind. The less you know the better. I would definitely recommend this book!

Retribution, Circumstances, Webs of lies, Fate

โ€œThe Lies I Tellโ€ is a story of manipulation, of payback, and of never knowing truth from lies. This tale of retribution unfolds in alternating narratives told by each of the two characters. Present-day stories are interspersed with multiple sections of past narratives; readers learn how each character arrived in the present-day and what baggage each carries. Time is important; there is an election coming. Events are on a schedule; dates are documented, and the days count down. Events from the past are pertinent to the present; โ€œthingsโ€ must be in place on time. The pace intensifies, and everything takes on urgency.

Julie Clark created characters who are complex and complicated; they play roles destined by their circumstances. Together, these two women are a force to be reckoned with; however, they do not know they are a team โ€“ yet. They are not necessarily outright liars, but โ€œfactsโ€ in any situation depend on who is telling the story. Readers suspect deliberate webs of lies but at the same time, feel empathy and understanding.

โ€œThe Lies I Tellโ€ unfolds like a maze. Readers travel one way only to find a false lead, or a deliberate dead end, necessitating a reversal and reexamination of the way. I received a review copy of โ€œThe Lies I Tellโ€ from Julie Clark, and Sourcebooks Landmark.

โ€œThe Lies I Tellโ€ is now available in print, as an e-book, and on audio from independent bookstores, online booksellers, retail stores, public libraries, and anywhere you get your books.

I really enjoyed this twisty tale. I read a lot of thrillers, so when one comes a long that is unique, I am hooked. This one had that. I really enjoyed the characters of Meg and Kat. The story builds up to a very satisfies and shocking ending.

The Lies I Tell was the book that won the voting rounds for our Thriller Friends Buddy Read in August. While the title was catchy, I did not know what to expect going in as this was my first read of this authorโ€™s.
โ€ข
My verdict is I enjoyed this wild cat and mouse game between 2 women, Meg and Kat, who are on the opposing spectrums of morality. Meg (and the numerous other con names she goes by) is a brilliant con artist who has lived by several identities in different professions and places, and alwaysโ€ฆalways gets her way. Nobody has traced her except Kat, a budding investigative journalist whoโ€™s yet to make a standing in society. So when she comes across Meg, she grabs the opportunity for a sensational story.
โ€ข
Without spoiling anything, something happens to Kat for which she blames Meg. This was an interesting point in the book that led to different opinions in our discussion. But this event further sparks Kat to expose Meg for who she really is. But who really is Meg and what is her agenda in conning people? Thatโ€™s where this book takes an interesting turn because Meg is not your regular con artist. Every action of hers has a purpose. Kat, along with the reader, eventually unravels Megโ€™s character. And then Kat has to decipher what to do with these new pieces of information. It was a very entertaining book with a cheeky ending, that we all enjoyed in the discussion.
โ€ข
Some of us found this book to be more โ€œdramaโ€ than thriller. I personally felt it didnโ€™t have any major jaw-dropping twists you see in thrillers but I was still satisfied with the ending after furiously turning the pages.
P.S: I hope this book is adapted into a major motion picture!

Detail Snapshot โ€” Domestic Thriller/Suspense, 4.2 โญ๏ธ average on GR, out now from Sourcebook Landmark, Contemporary Fiction with Audiobook Available

๐ŸŒธ This release came out this week on the 21st! It is a new thriller/suspense from Julie Clark, who also wrote The Last Flight. Currently, it has a 4.2 star average on Goodreads with over 6,000 ratings already! This comes at no surprise considering this book has been consistently listed among many โ€œmost anticipated thrillerโ€ lists this year.

๐ŸŒธ Quick Summary - The Lies I Tell is a twisted domestic thriller that dives deep into the psyches and motivations of two women and their unwavering quest to seek justice for the past and rewrite the future.

Two women. Many aliases.

Meg Williams. Maggie Littleton. Melody Wilde. Different names for the same person, depending on the town, depending on the job. She's a con artist who erases herself to become whoever you need her to beโ€•a college student. A life coach. A real estate agent. Nothing about her is real. She slides alongside you and tells you exactly what you need to hear, and by the time she's done, you've likely lost everything.

Kat Roberts has been waiting ten years for the woman who upended her life to return. And now that she has, Kat is determined to be the one to expose her. But as the two women grow closer, Kat's long-held assumptions begin to crumble, leaving Kat to wonder who Meg's true target is.

Thoughts --- I thought this book was an excellent thriller. I loved the multiple POV. I have read a book similar in theme to this one recently (published a few years ago though) and it felt unbelivable to me... however this one is a lot better in this regard! The pace as good and it has a strong hook with the narrators. I will recommend to those who like thrillers/suspense.
