I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way impacted on my view.

This is not going to be like my normal reviews, just because this was not like my normal read. I hate DNFing books, which is honestly why I forced myself to finish this mess of an ARC. I've only ever rated one other book 1 star, but I could not give this any higher.

First of all, when exactly was this book set? There's a hero who is going off to war all the time, wearing chain mail, and riding into a 'court'. There's a king and prince who keep waging war, so maybe Henry II and Richard I? But then there's mention of the theatre, regency, society, etc., so perhaps he means George III and IV?

Secondly, the heroine was annoying, the hero worse, and none of the secondary characters were any better. And what was the plot? The heorine's dad gambled away all their money, and her dowry, so she rides to a neighbouring lord's home, gets in his bed, and is willing to sell herself for money? But the hero thinks she's low born, so won't sleep with her, but still gives her money. When he realises she's not, and she's a 'lady' (though she wouldn't have that title as the daughter of a baron, but I digress), he's riding over to bed her immediately. He takes her back to his home, but still won't do the deed. She returns home, is told she needs to marry her awful cousin as she has disgraced the family, refuses, and the cousin kills her dad. Then the hero marries her, and leaves her at home while he goes off to war (where though?). They fall in love - oh really, *eye roll* - and then she's kidnapped, but not raped. The hero doesn't believe that, and when she reveals she's pregnant, he runs off again, until he realises he loves her, and can't lose her. Queue happy ending!

I am honestly shocked that this publisher - who I read regularly and enjoy the books they publish - deemed this one worthy of a beautiful cover, and a release. I don't even think this author is a debut author either, not when I checked out her GR page. This book needed to be completely ripped apart and re-written. I don't think there's anything really redeeming in the book, and if I see any more books by this author on NetGalley, I'm not reading it - I have more respect for myself than to force myself through that drivel! A truly awful book!

This was a mid range historical romance. It was fine, I didn't have any major issues it just felt bland and basic overall. Like I have read this plot and trope and characters before.

Although I had high hopes from reading the blurb, I agree with other reviews that this story was somewhat confusing. The time period is convoluted and the storyline inconsistent. I am a closet proofreader and my biggest pet peeve is grammatical errors. Although some are expected in unedited ARC copies, they were predominant in this book. In this electronic day and age this should not still be such a problem to overcome.
Thank you Verna Cyril, Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley for allowing me an advance copy for my honest feedback.

Unusual Historical Romance

Lilianna went to see the earl, without a chaperone. Could that be done? Then, he decided he wanted to have her. That seemed like an impossibility. From reading so many historical romances, noble women were very sheltered and protected. Then, once Lilianna and her earl got together, there was quite a bit of drama between them.

This historical romance was a bit unusual. I believe the author meant it to be a medieval romance, but it had elements from different eras. It also had very modern language, which can take away from the setting. Many authors use today’s language for the modern reader. However, I often find the use of the word “okay” a bit troubling since there are so many words that can be used instead.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC. All thoughts are my own.

Unfortunately I don’t have anything positive to say. I don’t think this was well researched or edited. Like other reviewers have mentioned, the time period is super unclear. There’s war, chain mail, castles, kings, and armies which points to medieval, yet the dialogue, dancing, and clothing indicates regency. The dialogue is stilted and dramatic. The writing is in general choppy and difficult to read. The Hero is very over the top Alpha and it just wasn’t for me.

I would say if you have read a lot of historical romance this probably won’t work for you.

I voluntarily received an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

This book was just not it for me.

Since it was an ARC I usually expect some errors but this book was filled with them. And I could never quite figure out when this was supposed to take place in?

But I think the worst part was the characters. Every wants the heroine but most are evil about it. And both the hero and heroine just don't ever talk. Everything happens around them and to them.

And there was some very troublesome comments in this book regarding a character who stuttered. He wasn't a good character but prior to even meeting him some very ableist language was used.

Unfortunately a big disappointment.

Interesting book to read but at times confusing. I do like the characters and enjoyed seeing how the story develops. Thank you for allowing me to read this book by a new author to me.

This book was rather confusing to me. The story was probably set in the 1800s but there were some elements that seemed to be more medieval. There was more death and violence than in the typical historical romance.

The story did move along but it seemed like the author did not know how to make transitions between scenes.
Sometimes two scenes were connected without any transition and I felt that I had missed something. Another time the scene was quickly sped up just to bring it to an end. It didn't feel natural at all.

The premise of the book was flimsy and I'm not sure how the H/h managed to fall in love. Their conversations were minimal and they didn't spend much time together..

Their were also many modernisms in the language.
This book doesn't feel like a finished product to me. With some more editing, I think the author has potential. I would be willing to give her work another try.

I received a free copy of this from NetGalley and this is my freely given review.

I very seldom give a review this low.

But seriously, there is some sloppy writing here and poor editing. The plot is sloppy and choppy, there is poor research and historical inaccuracies - which often I am willing to overlook so long as they are not overwhelming - well here they are just jarring. Is it medieval? Is it Georgian? Is it regency? It is not clear, and there are too many anomalies to ignore. Also EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER I have encountered is deplorable, and thoroughly unliked by me. Whiny, ditzy, arrogant, selfish, abusive, or just plain weak... terrible. There is literal whining too - as in the writer typed ..."she whined". I am trying to escape into a fictional fantasy land - I DO NOT NEED TO BE WHINED AT IN MY FANTASY LAND TOO!!!!!

There are very few books I hate; often I don't finish them; maybe go back later and find something to like about it. I finished this one; it was a very fast read, but it made me hate myself a bit for spending the time on it. Rather like when I watched Hugh Jackman in Van Helsing. Terrible movie, but I kept watching, hoping it would redeem itself, but by the credits, I hated it, hated the time I wasted on it, and hated Hugh Jackman enough for doing it, to not watch a movie of his for several years because he was tainted by the crap that was Van Helsing. I rather feel that way about Verna Cyril right now - I have no desire to read another novel of hers because I felt like this one was a disappointing waste of my time, and I resent the loss of that time.

One star out of 5. The one because the so-called hero does sound like an ass, but at least he sounds hot and lusty, and there was a moment of interest when there was a murder involved that made me think that there was an interesting plot development... nope...

To Win Her Honor by Verna Cyril is a marginal novel, which takes place in an indeterminate time. There is not time stated and so many things that happen don't fit together so it is hard to tell. The novel is rife with modernisms and incongruous situations that really; it is kind of a mess. The story, in and of it, is not terrible, but it is poorly told and inconsistent. She has several excellent characters, but she does not get to the depth of them. I was disappointed in this offering by a normally reliable publisher. I suggest Cyril reread the book with a critical eye and search for the best editor she can find.

I was invited to read a free e-ARC of To Win Her Honor by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #netgalley #dragonblade #vernacyril #towinherhonor

I feel like this was a first novel i dont know if that is so but it was a bit ropy at the beginning it did flow more towards the end. However it was all over the place in relation to era which I found very distracting. I was sure it was a medieval at first as the manor situation and the going to war for a couple of weeks with there own little army seemed to suggest that but the hessian boots and dresses didn't seem to match this so this really need sorted out. Overall though not too bad for a first attempt.

A new author to me, I was looking forward to this first in a series.

I was a little confused as to the time frame. The hero is returning from battle in chain mail and it seems to a castle. .The heroine has a conversation with her father and he admits he is in debt over his head so she decides to go to visit an Earl that she had heard was generous and her thought was he might help her father.

So she journeys to his home by herself with a few guards and the lady that opens the door assumes she knows her and takes her to get a bath and dressed. in a beautiful dress.. When he finds her asleep on his bed, he has no idea who she is but listens to her plea.

The language was very modern and stilted. The characters were interesting and if fleshed out a little more, it might have pulled together... So sorry to not be as positive!

I’m always pleased when I come across a book by an author I’ve not read before in this genre, I’m sorry to say I was a little disappointed in this one.

I was confused as to which time, regency or medieval, it was written about, it seems a mish mash of both at times.
I also struggled with the language, I feel maybe not enough thought went into the research for when certain words or phrases were used.

However I did like the characters, for the most part they were good and entertaining.
I wish I could be more positive about it, sorry.

I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review.
Thankyou to Dragonblade and Netgally.

I am sorry to say that this book was a huge disappointment.
The whole time I was reading the book there so much that made no sense. The first being I couldn't even tell what time period the book is set in.
The relationship between Jarrick and Lilianna was weak at best. There was nothing between them.
The time just were pointless and the conflicts just kept jumping around.
The only reason this wasn't a DNF was because it was relatively short.

To Win Her Honor is a story about Lilianna trying to help her father out of a ruinous situation. She seeks out Jarrick and gets more that she bargained for. Jarrick is a known rake and the spawn of the devil. There are many instances in this book of people not being who they seem though, and not always for the best. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. There is one thing that bothered me though. I can't figure out what time period the book is supposed to be set in. The actual story is really good though.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

1.5 Stars
Baron Wilthermore has turned to drink & gambling after losing his wife so his eldest Lilianna decides to pay an unchaperoned visit to Lord Jarrick Warren, the Earl of Sittcliff. Lilianna must seek help from someone with wealth and power. She makes up her mind to seduce Jarrick, but little does she know, he does not take orders, and certainly not from women. Jarrick finds a beautiful woman in his bed, intending to use her grace and charm to solicit money from him. Unimpressed, he doesn't surrender to the little nymph’s ploy. Out of duty, he grants her the sum requested and dismisses her. However, once he discovers his visitor’s true identity, she is the gentle-bred daughter of Baron Wilthermore, he demands that she fulfill her end of the bargain and spend the night with him.
This is the first book I’ve read by the author & it was an eye opener. First I thought it was set in medieval times in Scotland as Jarrick was 'off to war’ but then the dress was more Regency plus they waltzed. However there were NO wars in England after the Civil War of the seventeenth century, also by the nineteenth century swords weren't carried. I also struggled as to where the residences were as the locations seemed to vary. I thought the characters were two dimensional & didn’t feel any chemistry between them. I very nearly gave up by 15% but decided to continue & as I was having a sleepless night settled to finish it. In the end I decided it had to be a parody of historical romances. Some of the language was far too modern ie trendy clothes! & why was Jarrick wearing his beaver hat whilst dining at home?
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

I suspect that the author of this book is fairly new as her knowledge of the era, language and customs need some honing. I found the book difficult to get into and the plot unbelievable. I also had some trouble relating to the main characters and felt uncomfortable at times. I wish I could be more positive about this novel but wish the author well in the future. I received a copy of this book as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review
