Definitely recommend this book to younger audiences ages 10-18. I love the magical setting of a secret witch community set in our world. The author does an amazing job with describing spells, charms, magical landscapes. The story is typical of childhood pals falling out and then reconnecting later in summer of Senior year. But the author takes that trope from friends to enemies to lovers a bit different with the magical approach.

This was an okay read. I thought it would have been more humorous than it was. Didn't feel much chemistry amongst the characters. I would still read other works by the author.

it shows how you can be amazing friends with someone as then things can happen and time goes on and it changes your friendship.
fun book about friendship, romance, magic and being yourself.
great relationship between Jack and Ellie, the good and bads, the ups and downs and the growth. so much history between them 2 (was so glad that that author did such a good job about explain this and the way you see the back story)

The Charmed List by Julie Abe is a young adult magical romance surrounding Ellie and Jack. Ellie and Jack have a long history, going from best friends to enemies with a love hate relationship. When Ellie creates a bucket list and she and Jack are forced to make the road trip to a local magic conference together, they are forced to face their problems.

I really wanted to love this book, the book description seemed like something I would love, but I found it hard to get into. I wasn’t all that invested in the characters and their journey and I think that’s what made it hard for me to get into the book. Parts of the bickering back and forth was childish to me and annoyed me a little. This book just wasn’t for me, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t for you. After looking at the many reviews, there are plenty of readers who loved this story, it just wasn’t for me.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of this book!

The Charmed List was the perfect YA romance read. It was refreshing, cute and totally relatable. The inner dialogue from Ellie was perfect. It brought me right back to high school with thoughts of crushes and best friends and how to make the summer epic.

There was a twist to this summer romance story…and this twist was unfortunately not relatable. Ellie was magic-aware which is the term used for people who know about magic and can use it. While I didn’t relate to this aspect of Ellie’s life, I wish I did! The magical parts of this world the author created sounded absolutely incredible! From charmed teas to magical cottages - I desperately wished I too was magic-aware!

The story had a friends to enemies to lovers trope which I really enjoyed! I loved the mystery aspect trying to figure out why they stopped being friends in the first place! Why did Jack suddenly cut Ellie out of his life? And why is he suddenly being nice and acting like it never happened? These questions kept me turning pages and ultimately finishing the book in two days😅

This is the perfect book to read on the beach or at the park this summer so make sure to grab your copy! Release date is July 5th - set your reminders!

Thanks to net galley and Julie Abe for the digital ARC!

Having enjoyed author Julie Abe's middle grade books, the Charmed List, her first YA offering, gives the reader that same "charming" (sorry!) vibe. Her characters are always likeable and adorable and she brings that same magic spark here I'm sure everyone has come to love in her books. The writing seems like it would be great for that younger YA audience and I'd highly recommend it to all the fantasy loving readers in your life.

Special thanks to St. Martin's Press/Wednesday Books for making a copy of this ARC available to read in exchange for a review through NetGalley.

A great paced story involving teens, drama, and magic. I would describe it as a modern fantasy - magical elements integrated with the status quos of ‘today’. The characters are very loveable and the writing is beautiful!

Ellie is so excited to embark on a road trip with her best friend and even together an Anti-Wallflower list that she wants to accomplish during the trip. The only problem, Ellie’s a witch and her best friend Lia is not. When Lia learns that Ellie’s been hiding magic from her, the trip is off. Now Ellie is being forced to go with Jack, a rival from her magical community.

This ya romcom was cute! I enjoyed the characters and thought that the pacing was good. Overall, I would recommend!

The Charmed List was a delightful read! I'm really iffy about reading YA at times but this book was quite the read. The magical elements weren't overdone or repetitive at all. Ellie and Jack went from childhood friends to strangers to lovers. The angst was so good and their relationship over the course was developed perfectly. I did not expect this book to be as emotional as it was but it definitely pulled at some heartstrings. I would definitely recommend this book!

The Charmed List felt like the classic Disney show "The Wizards of Waverly Place" met Jessica Brody's The Geography of Lost Things , and I loved it so much. The enemies-to-lovers was great, and I especially enjoyed the banter and additional tropes the author added. Plus, if you're looking for other good YA book recommendations, the author makes sure to reference many other popular (real!) YA books for you to try. Angie Thomas, Elizabeth Lim, Aisha Saeed, and many others are all spoken of!

I did find some dialogue to be cringe-worthy, as there were a few times where the characters spoke in a way that no real teen speaks. Additionally, towards the end, Ellie started acting mentioning how self-conscious her scar made her with absolutely no build-up. Other than that, this was a fun, light-hearted romance that I think many will enjoy.

I wanted to love this but the writing read like a middle school rather than YA. It made it really hard to connect with. I found the main characters too insufferable and was unable to finish. I hope others find a liking of the book.

Thank yo to the author Net Galley, and publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I adored this book! I mean who wouldn't want to have a little magic in there world. I loved the characters and the storyline. It is a sweet story about friendship, friends to not friends, friends to more than friends. Just a great feel good read with magic. Abe's writing made me feel like I was right there in the story. It was a movie playing in my head. Now, I'm going to have book hangover.

** spoiler alert ** Another review where I wish half stars were an option, because 3 is too low but 4 is too high. The Charmed List was...charming! Magic, friendship and an enemies to lovers trope, this was super fun! I wish there was more exploration of the magic, but this was a very fun, quick, light read!

I will forever be a fan of books with a road trip. But the road trip for Jack and Ellie is something special. Not only full of magical moments (quite literally!), it's also full of expectations and the resurgence of the past. As I've mentioned, the magic in The Charmed List is so seamlessly interwoven. If you're a fan of those contemporary stories with a touch of magic - this is for you! But I think my favorite element of the story have to be Ellie and Jack.

I loved how their story not only is one about love, but it's also of apologies and discovery. Former childhood best friends, Jack and Ellie have a lot of history. So their story becomes not only about these sparks, but also this distance. To reconcile that the person we thought we knew, and maybe didn't like, is actually someone else. I loved that this was only from Ellie's POV, because it allows us to dwell in these misconceptions. To see that even when we are there, we don't see the whole story.

You can never go wrong with best friends to lovers, and this was exactly what itched my brain in the moment. I just want a good romcom sometimes, and this was a great way to fill that spot.

This is an easy to read, clean teen romance. This contemporary YA novel follows Ellie Kobata, a girl who is apart of the magically aware community in Palo Alto. Ellie plans on enjoying her summer before senior year by completing her anti-wallflower list with her best friend Lia, but after a poorly executed prank she finds herself having to take a road trip with her ex-best friend and current enemy Jack Yasuda. This is a fun rom-com that has many of my favorite tropes: forced proximity, one bed, and enemies to lovers. This a great read for anyone who believes in magic and love.

This book is about a girl named Ellie who makes a list of things that she wants to accomplish during the summer before her senior year. Unfortunately, Ellie gets stuck with her childhood best friend and current enemy, Jack, on a road trip to a magic convention. It's the perfect setup for Jack to help Ellie tick off items from her list! But is the list really charmed or is it cursed? And, at this point, is it too late for their relationship to be restored?

The magic system in this book is easy to understand and is integrated well into the events that transpire. There are people who are magic-aware and those who are not. The romance is absolutely adorable, though both characters make mistakes. We can see the chemistry between them through the smallest of actions, likely due to their close history. The banter was hilarious, and I was entertained throughout the entire story. This is a YA romance done right!

Two ex best friends, a magical road trip, and a bucket list to fulfill. Ellie Kobata has just finished her junior year of high school and is looking forward to finally breaking out of her wallflower shell and having the best summer possible with her best friend. However, Ellie is part of a secret magical community, her family runs a magic tea shop and she’s forbidden from letting anyone from outside the community finding out about magic. To make things more complicated Ellie keeps running into her ex best friend Jack Yasuda, who after being best friends for years, ghosted her, humiliated her at school, and constantly makes cruel jokes and tells people how much he dislikes her. His family owns a charm shop that is rival to Ellie’s own family shop. When Ellie decides to play a prank on Jack for years of hurting her it goes terribly wrong and soon reveals magic to her best friend Lia... which causes Lia in turn to have a meltdown and lash out at Ellie... and now as punishment Ellie has to go with Jack on a road trip as they help their parents’ store with supply drop offs leading to a magical convention as they travel down the coast of California. Nothing is worse than being stuck in a car with the person who hurt you so deeply and scarred you and now Ellie is trapped with Jack in this car. When he discovers her bucket list they soon find themselves working through it and maybe even finding out what truly happened and what it means for their future. Let me start off by saying I hated Jack. This man was continuously rude, mean, and just a downright jerk. Even his apology and reasoning was just... girl why did you forgive him? PLEASE WHY?? Maybe I’m too old for this but honestly this just didn’t work for me. Ellie was so deeply hurt and still reeling from the effects of the things he did and said to her. I actually liked Ellie up until the end, she was trying to get out of her box, she was trying to have a fun summer with her best friend, and yes she was trying to finally get back at the one guy who hurt her, can you blame her? But Jack... that man is a piece of work. Jack’s reason for doing what he did is understandable but it still makes him an absolute jerk and honestly I would have preferred more time for her to process and heal from EVERYTHING. This isn’t some magical charm or some fix-it type of situation, this was one of those, it definitely requires time and space to heal from what you did and continued to do until like 3 days ago into this trip. Seriously, I would have preferred if it had ended with them just making up and being friends period. Maybe this would have been great for high school me and I could have related more to the situation and the characters, but I am a grad student by now and just reading about Jack makes me want to beg Ellie to just move on. So while this was a cute idea of two ex best friends turned enemies to lovers on a road trip in a contemporary magic world setting had a lot of potential it unfortunately did not work for me, however definitely give it a go, maybe it’ll be better for you.

A solid YA romance suitable for teen readers and adults who enjoy less spicy romance books. A lot of YA romance is super steamy so I really appreciated that this book was something I would actually gift or recommend to a teen. The characters had good relationships with their families, were hard working, and we're believably teen. I really enjoyed the characters Jack and Ellie and their "flashbacks/memories" to when they were kids. Their past added more depth and romance and it was a fun way to get to know them.
Ellie is a wallflower and is determined to have the best summer ever and finally be someone. She makes a list of 13 things to do this summer and enlists her best friend Lia to help her check them off. First on the list, get revenge on Jack.
Ellie and Jack have been best friends since they were little, but they had a major falling out a few years ago and now they are enemies. Ellie despises Jack and Jack can barely look at Ellie. When a prank goes wrong, Ellie and Jack are forced to road trip together and help with their family businesses.
Can Ellie and Jack work through whatever happened between being best friends to hating each other? Can they make it on a road trip without killing each other and not mess up even more?
I loved the flow of the book and the family centric relationships and ties.
