Love this book more than I can say. Even used this book to lead a Bible study at my church. I’ve recommended it over and over and over.
This new book by Becky Thompson is a lot different than her previous books, but not in a bad way! Her conversational writing style is still the same, but this book goes much deeper theologically than the ones that came before--also, this one has a much broader audience; I'm happy I can recommend it to any Christian friends, not just moms as was the case with her previous books. This book focuses on the Holy Spirit and who he is a part of the trinity of God. Her previous book, Peace, delved a little bit into the truth of seeing the Holy Spirit as equally as powerful and equally God as we see Jesus and God the Father, so I was excited to learn that she was writing an entire book around this subject, because I think it is an important one. One of the things I liked most about the book was that BT backs up every point she's making with scripture, and not just one scripture reference. She uses multiple scriptures throughout each chapter and for each point she's making. I'll be honest, a couple of the chapters were work for me as a lifelong Southern Baptist, but there were so many times I highlighted sections while reading through this book because there were so many good truths that I wanted to be able to go back to. It's a worthwhile and timely read.
I enjoyed Becky Thompson's GOD SO CLOSE. As a Christian, I am interested in learning about the characteristics and role of the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. This book clearly defined the workings of the Holy Spirit, our Comforter as we live in this world until Christ returns. It was refreshing learning to recognize when the Holy Spirit speaks to us. I also liked that it was not just Thompson's experienced being shared. She backed it up with scripture which makes this book a good Bible study tool.
I would definitely recommend to others.
Becky is so good at being real and relatable and still showing the love of Jesus. I’m thankful for that
Absolutely loved this book and getting to know the Holy Spirit more. Been a fan of Becky Thompson for years now. And will always read her books and buy them for those around me.
I love this book it was refreshment to my soul I was raised Catholic married into Penecostal so I cherish both religions very close the Holy Spirit is a very powerful. in this book the way Becky takes you through it’s just a reminder of how powerful it can be in the body of Christ. I love the way she speaks to me or at least that’s how it feels like if she wrote I love how she references her daily life in the book makes me be able to relate to her so much I love how she expresses just how the Holy Spirit is important to our daily life and how it leads us I know everyone believes differently.. I slipped away from church a few years back and I always always really try to lean on my face every day but I love how this book helps deep in my relationship with God in one day I know he’ll be back in his house praising his name.
Another good read from Becky Thompson! I enjoyed the sharing of how the Holy Spirit worked in believers in the Bible and how He is still at work today. As a Christian, we often don’t utilize the power of the Holy Spirit within our lives as God has intended, often because we’re not listening or seeking Him.
What a beautiful book about the Holy Spirit. I loved the references to how close he is (as close as breath) i love how she uses scripture to remind us of Gods truth. This was a beautiful book.
What a refreshing book, like water to your soul. God so Close focuses on the Holy Spirit. The chapters are broken down in such a great way that invites you deeper with every chapter, starting with the Invitation of the Holy Spirit - God wants you to Know Him, The Promise of the Father - Who is the Holy Spirit, and it continues in that manner. Each chapter starts with a real story and a real life application of that chapters heading, a prayer, and reflection questions at the end. I know there are a lot of books that are written on the Trinity of God and Jesus, but not as much on the Holy Spirit, and this books approach feels like a great conversation with a friend rather than a technical or stuffy approach. I think with each level, you get a deeper understanding of not only the Holy Spirit, but how He wants to be in a real relationship with you and what and how that looks like in Becky's life, and how she has lived it out practically. Very well done!
*I received a copy of this book from NetGalley. This review is my own opinion*
The Holy Spirit is often the most misunderstood or ignored part of the Trinity. Yet, the Holy Spirit is an essential part of our lives and our relationship with God. Jesus said, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you” (John 14:26). In Becky Thompson’s newest book, God So Close, she focuses on giving us a deeper understanding of the Holy Spirit, in order to continue to build a closer relationship with God.
Thompson talks about how the Holy Spirit has moved in her own life, and gave her messages to share with others around her. This in turn drew these people closer to God. I appreciated her humility, in saying that everything that she does is because of God, and not her own talents or abilities. She made it clear that it is not about her, and this is a lesson that each of us would do well to remember. We need to give God the glory! The book is 14 chapters, and touched on topics such as spiritual gifts, how to make sure what you are hearing is the Holy Spirit, and who the Holy Spirit is/how he works. Each chapter ends with a prayer and some reflection questions.
Some quotes that stood out to me in this book include:
“I believe this is the deep longing of our hearts: to know God as He intended us to know Him.”
“We’ll have to refocus our pursuit from knowledge about God to intimacy with Him.”
“When the Law was given, God’s Spirit could dwell among the people. When the Holy Spirit was given, God’s Spirit could dwell within the people.”
“God still uses ordinary people, full of His perfect presence, to share His messages with the world.”
“The Holy Spirit doesn’t just direct us with yeses. He directs our steps with nos as well. But He always leads us down certain roads because He has a purpose. He always guides us with eternity in mind.”
“Have we stopped chasing after God Himself and replaced our pursuit of Him with the pursuit of information about Him?”
I would recommend this book if you are looking to learn more about the Holy Spirit and how He works in our lives. Pursuing God and a closer relationship with Him is a lifelong journey, and resources such as this can give us a little help along the way.
I really enjoyed this. It was definitely a little out of my comfort zone even though I have faith, but I was pleasantly surprised!
Who is the Holy Spirit? Why is He important? How do I know if I hear His voice? There’s much mystery surrounding the Holy Spirit, but Becky Thompson explains, illustrates, and makes accessible to all truths we can surely know. I especially liked the section near the book’s end regarding the Pursuit of God versus the Pursuit of Knowledge.
I love this book. Using Scripture, Becky reminds us exactly Who the Holy Spirit is, and why His presence in our lives is life- changing.
Becky Thompson details who the Holy Spirit is in relation to humans and the Godhead, how He speaks to use through ideas and dreams, and the purpose of those spiritual gifts and things we hear from Him. Everything is Bible based and educational but also has anecdotes of Becky's personal experiences given as modern examples of what a relationship with God is. Each chapter ends with a prayer and a few reflection questions which makes this very interactive even without a "workbook". I could see this being a great book club book even though it does not have the typical Bible study set up. There is a lot of great information to process and discuss and even more wisdom to start applying to your own life.
This book is written with a more casual, modern slang that refers to the reader as "friends" and makes reading this feel like you're having a discussion with a friend over coffee. This was very accessible and very educational!

God So Close is a wonderfully written book! Easy reading as if Becky Thompson, the author, is having a conversation with you, the reader, personally. In all her books, she guides you into how to create a closer relationship with God.! I love how this book is for all!
As I read much of Becky Thompson’s books and social media postings, I have repeatedly said to friends, Becky Thompson says what I feel.
Her books and posts have always hit at THAT moment. You know the one where you are exhausted and you read a Midnight Mom Devotional that prays for the tired mom who can’t take another step? Or picking up Peace at the beginning of Covid-19 when my anxiety was out of control? Or Love Unending coming out as I tried to save my marriage?
Now I know that the Holy Spirit has presented Becky to me so that I can have an intimate moment with God. The Holy Spirit knows what I will need each day and it’s the times that I listen, i’ve found God through Becky.
I thought I knew God and the Holy Spirit before reading this. The book has given me practical prayers and amazing anecdotes from Becky’s life to show me how to invite the Spirit into my life as I walk through each day and how I can have conversations with God just as if he was sitting next to me as I wake up in the morning.
This is an absolute must read to grow your faith and walk through life with God and the Holy Spirit by your side.
God So Close reminded me of the power of the Holy Spirit, a topic that is not always covered as deeply as I would like. I leave this book humbly convicted AND encouraged. I hope to get it into the hands of as many friends as I can, as I was lucky enough to read it a bit early. Just a really great, grounding read!
This book was wonderful. Very well written. All of the truths were beautifully and approach-ably laid out with plentiful scripture references. Each chapter ending with guided prayer and reflection points was perfect. We believers need this book badly!
Thank you to Netgalley and Thomas Nelson for the ARC of this amazing book.
“God So Close” is a wonderfully written and unique book for any Christian – especially someone who is looking to grow in their faith. Becky’s calm and peaceful writing style takes the reader on a thought-provoking analysis of one’s relationship with the Holy Spirit. What I loved most about “God So Close” was tie-in moments that related to Scripture and the prayer and reflections at the end of each chapter. These extras made the book feel validating and personalized to the reader.
This book was wonderful! Personal and comforting, it speaks like a trusted mentor into the mysteries of the Holy Spirit. This is such a huge need for American churches, that seem to be lacking an integral part of following Christ. We try desperately to cling to God with our own strength forgetting that He is right beside us. And how to harness this power? Read the book! Would recommend to anyone is growing in their faith. #godsoclose #beckythompson #netgalley #goodreads
