Toni Morrison's only short story. And a Zadie Smith introduction. How can one resist? And the way that Morrison approached racial identity in this story shows how she was always a writer well ahead of her time. There will never be anyone like her. This is a treat to read and I hope to teach it in my writing workshops once it's out.
