It was an enjoyable read and had a few high points about the music industry that made me chuckle - the women's movement and the salad parts where spot on.
The basic story is poor, runaway girl steals an 18-wheeler and rolls into Nashville with nothing but her dreams and a backpack. That's the start of a country song if I ever heard one! She finds her way to the bar district and sweet talks a bar tender into letting her sing and so she's discovered by the retired "queen of country music". But she's got a secret and it's haunting her even in Nashville.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for a temporary, digital ARC in return for my review.
Ok.
We all know that James Patterson can write an entertaining mystery. That said, I didn’t get the real suspense feel in this story.
BUT
The behind-the-scenes look at the country music industry, and particularly women in the country music industry, that was VERY well done. In fact, it grabbed me so hard, I couldn’t stop reading!
Mystery 3 stars
Glimpse behind the curtain 5 stars
Great read- both to have in person to hold and read and also audio. I love anything Dolly and mixing it with James Patterson’s creativeness is a winning combination. Would love to see this book come to life in a movie.
Dolly Parton and James Patterson -- two legends. What's not to love?!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
⭐️⭐️sorry JP! This one, Run Rose Run, was to predictable. No twists. No turns. No suspense. No staying up late. Was looking forward to the read . . .fan of DP and JP but was sadly disappointed. Two stars for for short chapters and setting in country music atmosphere …Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and Little Brown & Co.
The attraction of this novel is Dolly Parton as co-author and you can certainly hear her voice in the character of Ruthanna. Ruthanna is also the most interesting character and it is a shame she is a supporting character because she is the main attraction. The novel starts out with the James Patterson signature WTH just happened prologue and it's a doozy. AnnieLee (the eponymous Rose) is not a particularly interesting or sympathetic character. This reader was at a loss to understand the motivation of the character to rudely rebuff anyone's help when she desperately wants to become a star in the country music business. The ending is pure Hallmark romance novel. Will I use this in a classroom - no, but I will recommend it to high school students who are at the YA stage of reading. Even thought the story is weak, the chapters are short, the story is easy to follow, and the characters may be easy for emerging readers to connect with.
“If you’re big star bound it’s a long hard ride…” The Ride by David Allan Coe
That’s what was playing in my head as I read this book. Success in Nashville is earned by talent, grit, determination, perseverance, and a great deal of luck. AnnieLee is a gifted young woman determined to make a future for herself. She won’t let anyone tell her she can’t. This book will immerse you in the side of the music business normal folks don’t see. It certainly isn’t all glamor and glitz.
AnnieLee is the mystery in this book and when you find out her story it will make you think. I loved Ruthanna and Ethan and really enjoyed the ride.
I enjoyed the collaboration of these two stars in their own right. The drama was nicely done and kept my interest from beginning to end.
this was a quick fun read, I always enjoy James Patterson books, I read in one day, wanted to see what happened.
Loved this book. It had all the good stuff. Suspense, love and best of all - an ending that makes your heart smile! It was just what I needed to read. If you love country music and suspense you’ll love this! Great summer read!
In Run, Rose, Run, AnnieLee Keyes has arrived in Nashville ready to race her way to the top. Her past is running right behind her.
Very dramatic opening but then turn the page and it was like reading a different book. I keep wondering, how did she get from the truck to a bar in Nashville. This happened throughout the book. One minute this is happening, next minute she is somewhere else. I finished the book with lots of unanswered questions about things that seemed significant at the moment but then never got mentioned. Such as what happened to the truck in the first chapter, did she ever get her bookbag out of the tree in the park and where is her family now. Besides many unanswered story lines, I enjoyed the book. The full lyrics to the songs mention throughout the story were a nice ending.
Thanks to NetGalley and Little, Brown and Company for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I was lucky to receive an advance copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review and opinion. James Patterson is absolutely one of my favorite authors and I was so excited to read this one especially knowing Dolly Parton helped co-author it. This book does not disappoint, so fun to read and will literally keep you guessing what's going to happen until you reach the last page. If you like James Pattesrson, you will love this one!
Patterson is a must get author for me and this one did not disappoint! He and Dolly Parton wove together wonderful characters into a beautifully tragic and heartwarming story! I loved it and gobbled it up quickly!
Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for this ARC in an exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC of this book. I liked this way more than I expected to, I requested it because damn I love Dolly Parton, and in the past have liked James Patterson, but the story really sucked me in and kept me wanting to turn the pages. It made me feel like I was watching an episode of Nashville, one of my favorite shows, and I think that's especially why I enjoyed it. A great thriller without too much gore and murder.
I adore Dolly Parton (who doesn't?!?), and enjoy James Patterson. This was a fun read, and everything i hoped for.
In Run, Rose, Run, we watch country music singer AnnieLee Keyes rise from starving to stardom, and like every good country song, there is a dark past and a lot of hard living that came first. From the beginning, we learn that AnnieLee is a scrappy, determined little thing, although don't call her "little." She has songs pouring from her heart and soul that tell her story much more than we know. Thanks to Ethan Blake and retired country music star Ruthanna Ryder, AnnieLee's musical journey gets a huge boost.
The pace of the novel is fast-moving and entertaining, for sure. It was an easy, fast read, and I was interested to know what was going to happen. Everyone loves the underdog making it to the top with the help of her fairy godmother, right?! However, this along with a few other parts seem unrealistic. Also, too much information comes crashing out near the end, with a very quick resolution. It does play out like a fairy tale.
Still, I enjoyed reading this book, and even though the retired country singer is not described to look like Dolly Parton, I liked to imagine her as Ruthanna. I would recommend this for a fast read, especially if you are a music fan. I loved reading the songs that were woven through the story.

Run, Rose, Run by James Patterson and Dolly Parton was a fun romp through a young girl's journey to stardom in the Nashville country music world. Add in a twist of mystery and the story got a bit edgier, but the tale of Annielee's rise was an interesting one. I am sure Dolly Parton's own experiences added to the authenticity of the tale.
I wanted to like this book as I like Dolly Parton and Patterson's previous works, but I just couldn't get into it so I gave up about 20% in. Hoping to go back to it at some point as I am a mood reader. It just wasn't the right choice at this time.
This was about what I expected it to be coming out of Dolly Parton and James Patterson. The story did it really surprise me in anyway but it was fun to read just because it was Dolly!
Thank you, NetGalley for this advanced copy. I actually received the audio from my library, so I listened instead.
The book was a great James Patterson book with a twist of some fun Dolly Parton thrown in. It's about a young artist trying to make it big in Nashville and an old has been trying to help her along and the Queen of Country as a mentor.
Not only is it a story of finding a way to make your dreams come true, but finding your soul mate, but just for fun there is a psychopath chasing Annie Lee Keys.
