I have heard so much about The Club, I was so EXCITED to read it, but this one just didn't do it for me.
There were SO MANY CHARACTERS. It was almost impossible to follow them.
The concept of the story was good, and I think it had great potential, but I kept having to go back to try to remember who was who . There were definitely some twists and an ending I wasn't expecting but it wasn't as enjoyable as I would like because of all the characters.
I really struggled with this book as there were so many characters and the overall it was a slow-moving story. Was sadly disappointed after her last book was such a success.
Thank you for the opportunity to read and review The Club.
While I love a good thriller, this book was difficult for me. There were so many different characters that I had a hard time keeping them straight and found it challenging to remember which storyline went with which character.
However, I was quite surprised by the ending and who the missing bodies were.
This book fell really flat for me. I thought it sounded super interesting and I was so excited to pick it up after all the hype on Bookstagram. However, it just didn’t do that for me. There was a lot of main characters that I simply could not remember all of them as well as a lot of different things going on. It jumped around a lot and when I finally was not confused, it jumped to a new topic. Sometimes too much description can be worse than not enough descriptions and this one definitely had that aspect. I felt it was super drawn out and could’ve been a shorter read. I will say that the ending was really good and I just wish I could’ve said the same for the rest of the book.
This was a fun read; one that I’d recommend for someone just getting into thrillers/suspense. Mysterious characters with lots of selfish motivations make for a good who-dunnit guessing game throughout the whole read. The only “downfall” was that it is a slower burn, which, for this thriller loving gal, is sometimes a letdown.
🚗🚗🚗 Three stars (as rated in a speeding car that may or may not have made it across the landbridge in time)
The Home Group is the most exclusive chain of resorts in the world. Renowned for pushing the limits of their already ostentatious hospitality, The Club is determined to raise the bar even further with their newest location. Grand Opening weekend is about to begin at Island Home, off the coast of England; the newest stage on which for The Club to demonstrate its power.
The Home Group and its puppetmasters are determined that everything run according to their plan; expenses be damned! But in a setting this elaborate, and with a clientele this exclusive, the weekend is just bursting at the seams with dirty secrets. How far is The Club willing to go to keep its place at the top of the world? And by the end of the weekend will people still be dying to get in? Or dying to get out...
"There was some sort of justice involved, in watching some of these people- these terrible fucking human beings, these terrible fucking men- beg, grovel, face for the first time ever the consequences of their actions.”
Lately, I've been really loving books with a whole fictionalized celebrity crowd. It's fun to piece together which irl A-listers each respective character could be modeled after and I feel a lot less guilt indulging in gossip when the subjects are all made up.
Add this book to your summertime beach read stack. Pairs best with sunscreen and a margarita, imo. 💃🌞🍹
✨Read this book because you love star-studded cast of entirely made-up celebrities is your jam and you like when baddies get what's coming to them.
✨Content warnings: violence, date rape, assault, death, car accident, murder, death of a parent, drugging, forced adoption, adult/minor relationship, harassment, injury detail
Meh. I wanted to love this book, based on the premise of drama, celebrities, backstabbing and secrets but it was hard to follow the multiple points of view and story lines.
If you can keep track of everyone, this low key mystery comes together predictably in the end and would probably make a good Netflix show.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the eARC.
The Club has an interesting premise, but it’s not for me. Superficial characters and too many point of views.
I have no idea how to sum this up in a new, spoiler free way. The Guest List meets Daisy Jones and the Six… maybe? Jeffery Epstein meets Soho House? I loved all the different POVs. All of the characters were terrible (in an entertaining way) and there are a LOT of them to keep track of. I was captivated the entire time.
I hope Reese makes this one a movie. Would absolutely watch. Her book club picks are usually major flops for me, but I seriously loved this.
Thanks to Harper and Netgalley for the advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
The idea of this book was terrific. I was so excited to read it. In the end, I didn’t hate it but it’s not going to top the list of favorites this year.
The Home Group is a collection of celebrity members’ clubs that are dotted across the globe. This is where the rich and famous go to flaunt their wealth, party hard, and crash in the five-star luxury suites far from any fans or media.
Island Home is the most spectacular and fantastic resort of them all. It’s extremely close-guarded and beyond luxurious. Its three day long launch party is the most coveted A list invite of the decade.
However, what seems perfect rarely is. Behind the scenes things are a mess. The Home Group’s CEO and his long suffering team are at their absolute limit. Everyone has something to hide and that’s before the guests, all of whom have their own secrets, even arrive.
Tempers flare and behaviors worsen as things, and body counts, begin to pile up. By the end, many of the guests will wish they never got that invite.
This was alright. I really tried not to give any spoilers so I do apologize for the scattered and disjointed wrap up. Thing is, this had amazing potential but fell a little flat. It was a very slow build to the action and when things came to a head it went too fast. All the build up for a very quick wrap.
Would I recommend it? Well, I don’t regret reading it so if you have some time and are curious than sure, why not?
3.5 stars rounded up! I’ve read some negative reviews and I agree with some of the criticisms about the writing, but all in all I really enjoyed The Club. It felt fuller than their last book People Like Her.
You meet a huge cast of characters who are all privileged (most likely white) and celebrities in their own right. They are members or employees of HOME - the hottest members only clubs around the world. A story of blackmail, deceit, and the dark side of celebrity, The Club is a thriller that focuses on a weekend on Island Home, and the demise of its CEO.
I did like the writing, but the descriptions were a little redundant. I’m fine with a metaphor or two, but not four in one paragraph. While it was a slow burn, I definitely had to keep reading. Thank you Net Galley for the copy!
From the jacket: The Home Group is a glamorous collection of celebrity members' clubs dotted across the globe, where the rich and famous can party hard and then crash out in its five-star suites, far from the prying eyes of fans and the media.
The most spectacular of all is Island Home—a closely-guarded, ultraluxurious resort, just off the English coast—and its three-day launch party is easily the most coveted A-list invite of the decade.
But behind the scenes, tensions are at breaking point: the ambitious and expensive project has pushed the Home Group's CEO and his long-suffering team to their absolute limits. All of them have something to hide—and that's before the beautiful people with their own ugly secrets even set foot on the island.
As tempers fray and behavior worsens, as things get more sinister by the hour and the body count piles up, some of Island Home’s members will begin to wish they’d never made the guest list.
Because at this club, if your name’s on the list, you’re not getting out.
REVIEW: I wanted to LOVE this book. And sometimes, I did. I loved the world created around the most elite of celebrities and I trusted exactly no one. While the secrets divulged were entertaining and sometimes explosive, it felt like it took an eternity to get there and by the time the final twist arrived, I felt a little bored. I liked it, but it's not a must read for me.
A first for me, but I couldn’t finish this book. It was difficult for me to get interested. I couldn’t relate to the characters or the celebrity gossip. It grabbed me in the beginning and then halfway through I just couldn’t get through a page.
The Club by Ellery Lloyd was a thrill ride. I never knew what to expect and who to trust. There were a lot of characters but I found each one was well fleshed out enough to be able to remember them all! I really enjoyed this!
I had a really hard time getting into this one, but once I hit the halfway point it definitely picked up and got better. The Club is told from different perspectives and reminded me of Lucy Foley's books. Overall, I enjoyed it, but didn't love it. The plot had a lot of potential, but was underdeveloped.
The description of this book grabbed my attention and I was excited to read it. I'm sorry to say I was not a fan. It was nothing like I thought it would be. It was very slow moving. There were random characters thrown in that didn't really apply much to the story. It jumped around all over the place. It had potential to be a very good storyline, unfortunately it was not told very well. At least most of the details were wrapped up at the end.
Its the launch of Island Home, the super exclusive celebrity island getaway run by Ned Groom. But when dead bodies start popping up on the island secrets of the rich and famous will start to unravel.
I didn’t enjoy the writing style of this one. Too many “ands” It felt like a long run on sentence, so it was hard to read. I did enjoy the plot and how it all came together in the end, but found it a bit slow going throughout.
Pick this up if you enjoy a slow burn suspense read with all the flair of the rich and famous.
I loved the idea of this book so much. But I have to be completely honest, I felt like it was really lacking in the plot. I did enjoy some of it, but it wasn't a book that kept me thoroughly captivated. I felt there were too many storylines to follow and I kept finding myself confused as to whose storyline was what. The chapters were also super long, which I felt made reading drag a little bit. I don't mean to rip this book apart, there were definitely some juicy details and I did like the way one of the storylines tied up for one of the characters. Overall, it just wasn't my favorite book. Nonetheless, thank you so much to Netgalley and the publisher for the eARC approval.
💭What I thought would happen:
Exclusive club for the privileged obviously!
📖What actually happens:
The newest and hottest club around (hello Stefon from SNL) has opened by the Benedict Cumberbatch wannabe, Ned. Celebrities flock from all over but only the VIP of VIPs are allowed through the shiny allure of exclusivity.
There has been a death. Whose is unknown and how is more of a mystery. The book includes snippets from the news, articles, podcasts and social media about what happened while flashing back to the occurrence and all the events they played out to the rich a fabulous. Does privilege cover up a murder?
🗯Thoughts:
After seeing many many mixed reviews, cannot say that I was rushing to read this but ya know what? I liked it! A lot! This book had everything I wanted: celebrity drama, salacious gossip, backstabbing of the privileged and exploration of the working class (rage!)
I really enjoyed People Like Her (if you haven’t read it just do it, now) and I was very much anticipating this book when it was first announced! However, there were many many characters and it took me a quality 50% of the book to have everyone all sorted (I think).
I needed to be like an obsessive stalker with a wall and pictures of all the characters with red string tying them all together to figure out where everyone belonged (I do see why there was such an abundance of characters though).
This is a great summer read, give it a try!
I love the influx of influencer books lately but couldn’t get into this one. It seemed like it was going to be a light, beachy read but it was almost too light—there was no real plot. I am still interested in finding out what a private club is really like but I don’t think this book is it. It was too slow.
