I loved Playing with matches so couldn't wait to read this one. And now I can say I definitely love Hannah's books. The idea that someone can predict the exact date of when you will meet your perfect match is fascinating to me. The character of Edie stole my heart. Her meeting the musician on the plane. I loved the whole story. Hannah has such talent. I can't wait to read her next book!
Although I was looking forward to Meant to be Mine, having liked Head over Heels, I simply failed to connect with this one. The characters never got into my skin and I didn’t love the storyline even though the premise sounded great initially. I wish fate existed and the idea that Edie knew the date that she’d meet her match was super intriguing. If only the book lived up to my expectations!
Thanks to Atria Books for the arc.
Wow, that really hit the spot and I absolutely LOVED this book.
There was so much to love, where do I even begin?
- Edie: Such a great MC. I loved her. I understood her. I felt so connected to her.
- I loved that this book felt like Edie’s complete life - family, friends, work, dating. I feel like sometimes books are contained to only the main characters and even mention of other friends or coworkers or things they do throughout the day are glossed over. Here, I LOVED going on runs with Edie as she ran errands. It felt like I really knew her.
- Edie’s job: She’s a stylist!!! It’s just so fun. I need to watch The Devil Wears Prada ASAP.
- NYC: This is a love letter to Brooklyn/New York City and I want to go to there NOW.
- The JEWISHNESS of it all is such a damn delight.
- The romance: I loved the romance because it was so cute, but this was also hands down the best description I’ve seen of the *pressure* we can put on the future of a relationship, plotting out an entire future after a first date and judging if you can see a life with someone based on every new detail revealed. It was so spot on.
This book requires a little suspension of disbelief to get into the main plot of it all, but it’s SO worth going in with an open mind and not judging.
This book screamed “MOVIE” to me and I want to watch it ASAP, so if someone could make it that would be great, thanks.
I should be asleep right now, getting some rest before work but from the moment I started, Hannah Orenstein’s Meant to Be Mine, I knew I would finish the book in one sitting. I was intrigued by the very premise of the story that Edie could know the exact date that she would meet the love of her life. I have never been one to believe in fate, especially when it comes to love, but Edie (or Orenstein) made me want to believe. The narrative arc was unexpected and unique, I kept reading because I needed to know what would happen next. And by the end, I couldn’t help but cry happily.
What I liked: Edie’s relationship with her family, specifically with her grandmother Gloria, had me deep in my feels. Meant to Be Mine celebrated the bonds of family and the connections we share in a truly beautiful way. I really enjoyed reading about Edie’s life in New York City and her job and her closeness with her friends too. I was also rooting for the story to play out the way it did and was satisfied with the ending.
What could be better: I loved this story and how it ended so much but I wish I could have had even a few more chapters at the end, instead of the summary in the final chapter. I must say that it is a good sign when the only thing about the book that you would change, is the fact that you wanted more of it.
I think this is a five-star read because I was truly captivated by Edie’s story and her search for love. Orenstein said that she wrote the book amidst the pandemic, as her way of escaping, and I truly felt like this book was an escape for me too. I have read and enjoyed all of the author’s previous works and this one might be my favourite yet. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a read that explores fate and family ties, while still encompassing all of the joy you typically find in a romance story.

I love the ending and how the book resolved and how it was a love letter to grandmothers. However, for 50% of the book Edie and Theo together were annoying. Overall loved the premise, hated the journey, loved the ending.
I read this in one sitting and loved it every second of it!
Meant to Be Mine has surpassed every one of my expectations.
The romance, the writing, the plot, the feelings this book gave me were amazing ones.
The characters are incredibly written, skillfully executed and evolved throughout the story.
I loved the dynamic between Edie and the mysterious charming musician.
Hannah Orenstein's writing style is everything I love in my contemporary romances.
It just flowed beautifully and not once did I want to out my Kindle down.
This was a fun, entertaining, epic and stunning novel.
Atria Books,
Thank you so much for an advanced copy of Meant to Be Mine
I will post my review to B&N, platforms, blog and Waterstone close to pub date!
I want to start this out by saying if you haven’t read Head Over Heels by this author, go read it! One of my fav reads of 2020.
Edie has an interesting prophecy, known within her family. Her Grandmother Gloria has accurately predicted the dates of when everyone in their family will meet their perfect match. Edie has been anxiously waiting for her date, even ending a very serious relationship as she believes in Gloria’s magic that much. On her day, Edie meets a musician on a plane and even though she begins to fight for that relationship, she realizes that this may not be the type of person she imagined for herself.
I was really disappointed by this. Although it was easy to read, it was boring and took me forever to get through. I would leave it for days and not be enticed to read on, I did a decent amount of skimming because I feel like so many details were added that didn’t need to be there. I didn’t care at all about any of the side characters so I felt no connection to them or what they were doing. The relationship between Edie and the main male character, her match, who’s name I can’t remember even though I finished this book a couple days ago (bad sign), was so bland. They obviously didn’t have a connection and I know this was a key part of the story but it dragged on and on. I thought Edie seemed kind of silly for being so bent on the prophecy, it was almost cringey, especially when she kept harping on her past relationship. Now, I did like the ending, but I wish the ending was more of the story because that’s what I was really interested in reading. I liked what happened there more than anything else in the story, but the ending was extremely convenient and predictable. I knew the whole book it would end up that way, I just didn’t know how. This was sadly a let down…

I really wanted to like this book, but nothing about it really drew me in to make me desperate to finish it. Edie spent most of the time pining about her ex Jonah. Theo wasn't fantastic (which was the point), and the love interest at the end seemed a bit convenient. I don't know. Maybe it if it was classified as general fiction instead of romance, then I could agree. The sister and her partner were probably my favorite characters.
Really enjoyed this book! Such a fun read with great character development! Such a fun one and great to grab!
This was a really fun read for a few reasons: 1. It was unapologetically Jewish and hit me in all the nostalgia feels. From the loving Jewish family, the matzah ball soup and rugelach mentions that had my mouth watering, right to the mah-jongg references, I feel like Hannah and I could have grown up in the same house.
And 2. I honestly did not know how this book was going to end. I was guessing all the way through to its unexpected yet satisfying ending.
Extra bonus points for diversity and mentions around Jewish traditions that don't just involve food - i.e. Shiva and funerals (topics close to my heart).
p.s. I did a very hearty LOL at the matzo ball recipe at the very end. A time-honored recipe that my own mother followed to the letter.
Highly recommended.
Thank you for this ARC! I thoroughly enjoyed Meant to be Mine! It was funny and sweet and I read it in about 48 hours. I didn't want it to end and now I plan to read more from Hannah Orenstein- this was my first book by her! It is positive and full of hope without being overly cheesy and unbelievable. I loved the details about careers in both fashion and politics and NYC as a backdrop was perfect. If you like romance or just want something uplifting with a lot of heart, this is a great book for you!
Hannah Orenstein is a great romcom writer and I have enjoyed her past books. I didn't vibe with this one though at all. I never connected to any of the characters and the narrative felt bogged down by a lot of description about things that I didn't find interesting, so I skimmed a lot. I also predicted the ending in chapter 7 (I don't know if that's a "me" thing, or a book thing that needs to be worked out, but it made the book feel really long). I am sorry to say this wasn't the book for me.
For generations, Edie's grandmother has predicted to the day when the women in their family will meet their true love. Edie has been waiting for her day and when it comes, she is sure he is the one. She even broke up with her boyfriend months before that day because it was not him she was meant to be with. After meeting a man on that day and beginning a relationship with him, she and those close to here will examine whether love comes down to fate or maybe the heart.
This book captured my heart early on. Edie's family and friends are lovable and provide her with a great support system and she tries to figure out what her heart wants. You can't help but fall in love with Gloria! Her twin comes across as a little too perfect for me, but I think that is relatable for a lot of people with siblings. I predicted Edie's match before it happened, but by the time I did, I realized that I was looking forward to watching it unfold.
Definitely a great read! Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for my advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Such an adorable romance novel.
I love the family dynamics! I really enjoyed the grandmother character, though I found that storyline a little difficult to read so soon after losing my grandmother.
The central love story is honest and feels real.
Orenstein's writing stands out! This was the second book I read by her and her voice sticks out. I found this book to be creative in a lot of ways. While the pace was slower at certain points, overall it was a fun story to escape into.
Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed reading it but it was a little slow for me in the beginning. I really liked the theme and how descriptive the writing style was. Also, the characters were pretty interesting and entertaining. So, overall, it’s a 3.5 stars read for me.
Another amazing novel by Hannah Orenstein! It was such an uplifting story that was full of hope and positivety. I read this one so fast! Loved it!
5+ stars for Hannah Orenstein's newest novel! Orenstein captures the lifestyle and internal monologue of a millennial woman perfectly. I loved the characters and their descriptions, the level of detail in this novel, and the sweet, yet satisfying ending. Simply perfection.
A sweet heroine: reminds us of very younger Carrie Bradshaw meets Emily Cooper who chooses big Apple over Paris!
Do you need reasons to be head over heels for a book? I can give you more! Here’s my list telling you why I enjoyed my reading too much!
-Magical meant to be- soulmates theme!
-An adorable grandma who has a special gift to foresee the day you meet your soulmate!
-Dreamy depictions of New York which made fell for the city one more time and read those chapters that remind me of post pandemic portraits of the city while I was sighing deeply!
-A lovely heroine you can easily connect when she starts her journey to find her own path, her struggles to choose between fate and true will!
-A very satisfying conclusion I truly adore!
This is such a delightful, stunning, heartfelt reading! I think this is so far the best thing the author has written.
If you truly need a feelgood fiction plus lighthearted romance: this is the best choice you can get.

Meant to Be Mine by Hannah Orenstein is a fast-paced blend of fashion, dates, and romance. The story revolves around Edie, a high-end fashion consultant who works with celebrities and politicians. The thing is, her Grandma Gloria has always been able to predict the exact date when each member of her family will meet their soulmate. Today is Edie's date, and she meets her perfect match on an airplane. Is this her happily ever after?
Here is an excerpt from Chapter 1, that sets up the premise:
"If the vision had only happened once, she might have written it off as a coincidence. But the images kept coming: she forecasted her brothers and sister meeting their matches, and then a handful of cousins, and her own daughter and son, and then my sister, Rae, and then me.
Gloria has seen it all coming: Her sixty-four-year-old aunt finding true romance with the woman who moved in next door after decades of an unhappy marriage to a man; my cousin Evan kissing a girl on the playground in preschool and marrying her twenty years later; even Rae meeting her boyfriend—soon-to-be fiancé—during her freshman year of college. She’s never been wrong.
Today, Friday, June 24, 2022, is my day."
Overall, Meant to Be Mine is an interesting look into the idea of fate and soulmates. One highlight of this book is how captivating the plot is. I felt like I was reading Money Diaries from Refinery29, which I always found fascinating. Also, the protagonist's job as a fashion consultant is interesting, and I loved reading about her day to day. If you're intrigued by the excerpt above, or if you're into books about romance, I highly recommend that you check out this book when it comes out in June!
