I had to dnf this book, I didn't not like it, it was just the wrong choice for me. I wasn't the right audience, I guess. I'm sorry.
It's been a long time since I dnfed it. More than a year, but I remember it felt juvenile for me, a 34 year old woman.
I will be giving it 3 stars because it's not fair for me to rate it when I only read 40% of it. But also because NG won't send the review without me rating it.
This book just wasn’t for me. I thought my love of Hamilton would ring through, but it just seemed to far split from the truth for me personally.
This novel is an alternative history of what would happen if Theodosia Burr and Phillip Hamilton fell in love. This was a very romantic love story. Phillip and Theodosia are complex characters. I love of Theodosia is an intelligent woman and is able to make her own decisions! I also love Theodosia’s relationship with her father! The audiobook is very well-performed. The narrator enhanced the characters and emotions from the story. I recommend this for fans of My Dear Hamilton, The Secret Wife of Aaron Burr, and Theodosia! This novel is a must read for Hamilton fans!
I am guilty of getting caught up in all things Hamilton and adored this audiobook. I wish it had lasted longer! The author provided depth of character to those typically kept behind the veil and a glimpse to the other sides of the more famous and historical Hamilton and Burr. I enjoyed being able to listen to the story as I do quite a bit of commuting and find audiobooks are a great way to make the most of my time.
I received an ARC courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher. The opinions are my own.
I love a good historical fiction novel. It gives you the details of the era, the sights, and sounds, the struggles, and issues, without the dryness some non-fiction history can have. Love, Theodosia was well done in presenting the history of post-revolution America, especially in regards to freedom for women and slavery. The romance between Theodosia Burr and Phillip Hamilton develops slowly but has well-timed conflicts and plot twists. Very reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet with the family rivalry and the need to keep the romance secret. Each character is devoted to family, but struggling against their own wishes and dreams. But with politics and finances in the way, Theodosia especially suffers from the manipulation of her father. Be a man in education, bearing, and discipline, but remember to be a woman and not embarrass me. Help me and betray yourself for the good of our name and appearances.
Overall a good story with romance and tragedy, historical insight into elections, and politics of the era. I would have loved to have had more plot surrounding the rivalry between Burr and Hamilton; not a lot of history is brought into the story regarding that. Instead, it is assumed that the reader knows why. **Cough, cough. Tries to not burst into song... "Are you Aaron Burr, sir?"
I was hoping to like this book but I couldn't get into it. At times this felt like a history lesson and all I wanted was the romance. When the romance finally happens, I did not feel the chemistry between Theo and Philip.
📜BOOK REVIEW 📜
Unique and refreshing, I couldn’t wait to dive into a world where Theodosia Burr and Philip Hamilton fall for each other.😱
Sort of like a Romeo and Juliet retelling, but much, much better, I found myself shipping these two more than I ever thought I would!💕
And that ending?! I feel like we need a sequel, but with the way it closes, we probably won’t get one. I need to know what happens after the big bomb drop!
The only critiques I have: the book started out a little slow for me, and it was hard for me to get “zoned in” to the story at first. But I’m SO glad I stuck with it, because the remainder of the book was 5 star quality.🤩
⚠️ The book has one scene at the end with greater “steamy” content, that I wasn’t expecting. Because of this, I recommend the book only for older readers and those who are aware of this going in/ 18+. The rest of the story is romantic angst, but is relatively clean.⚠️
My overall rating:
🌟🌟🌟🌟/5 Stars
Until listening to this audiobook, I was not knowledgeable of Theodosia Burr. Times were different then and she sacrificed much for her father and for her country. Well written and a bittersweet story.
Many thanks to OrangeSky Audio and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
The author develops a Romeo and Juliet type scenario exploring the imaginary love story between Theodosia Burr and Philip Hamilton.
The conflict between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton is one of the most well-known and tragic happenings in American history. Goldstein frames this story around this conflict.
Theodosia and Philip traveled in the same social circles so their meeting seems inevitable. Even as the author reportedly tells us how intelligent and learned Theodosia is, she is constantly scheming in improbable ways to advance her romance and marriage to Philip even as her father as different plans for her life.
Too much repetition slowed the story for me.
This is a lovely historical fiction story. I listened to the audiobook. I enjoyed seeing how hard it was for women to become a published newspaper reporter and the issues they had to overcome. It was great that there was a strong female protagonist in Theodosia. I failed however to connect fully with the story to some extent. It is a slow building story which isn't always my favourite type of book. I enjoyed the tension around whether Theodosia would get the man of her dreams or not. This is a great book for those who love this type of slow building will she won't she get the love of her life at the end. This book just wasn't for me but Don't ever let one person's review ever stop you from trying a book for yourself. Its so easy these day's to get a sample of the book before you purchase it . Just to see if you love it. Not every will like ever book so give this book a try see if you fall in love with it. I did finish the book and did enjoy many aspects of the book it could of been that it just didn't captivate my full attention so I easily became a little lost in places. I hope you enjoy this book.

I LOVED this book! I was in love with Theodosia as well as Philip!
This book is about Theodosia Burr and Philip Alexander. They fall in love in spite of their fathers being at odds. This story tells of the love they had and the love they had to give up.
I was gifted an audiobook version of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review. I was really looking forward to what sounded like a lovely (fictional) love story between Theodosia Burr and Philip Hamilton. As a lover of historical fiction and a huge Hamilton musical fan, I wanted to love this - but it was a DNF for me. My issues with the book may have more to do with the audiobook narrator than the actual story itself, so I would be curious to see if I enjoyed the story more with the book version. The narrator spoke very slow (too slow for me) which made the story drag. I listened to three hours of the audio and the story never really picked up - I was still waiting for Theodosia and Philip to fall for each other! I usually speed up the book when this happens but the NetGalley app limits the speed to increment of .25x - 1x was too slow and 1.25x was too fast.
What I did appreciate were the historical (possibly fiction?) references to the post-Revolution political climate in America and the relationship (or lack thereof) between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. I was curious to see how / if the book dealt with the untimely death of Philip and his father, but alas - I could not get that far due to the delivery.
We all know the animosity between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton. But, have we thought at all about the lives of their children? How they may have been connected in ways their fathers never could have imagined, or wished for. Love, Theodosia is a romantic historical fiction read going deeper into the lives and families of A dot Burr and A dot Hamilton. A forbidden romance between Theodosia Burr, an incredibly educated and wise young woman and a playboy, if you will, in Philip Hamilton. I wanted to love this story so much more than I did. It was a very slow moving plot and even though the narrator was fantastic at bringing each of the character's to life, it left me wanting more. So much more. I would give this a 2.5 star rating, rounding up to 3. I do want to explore more from this author. A huge thanks to NetGalley and OrangeSky Audio for an advanced audio copy of Love, Theodosia in exchange for my honest review. *Review was posted to both Amazon and Barnes and Noble (awaiting final approval).
I want to thank Orange Sky Audio and NetGalley for allowing me to listen to and review the audio of Love, Theodosia by author Lori Anne Goldstein.
Theodosia is the daughter of Aaron Burr and Phillip is the son of Alexander Hamilton. Another case of star-crossed lovers.
Miss P, as her father often calls her, is way ahead of her time. She is well educated and believes all slaves should be free but must keep her thoughts to herself. Her father wants to become president. The story is a easy way to learn some of our countries history.
This is an intriguing story and the characters are all so well developed. Romantic fiction at its best.
The narration by Allyson Voller is perfect.
The publication date was November 16th, 2021.
I wanted to like "Love, Theodosia", but I didn't: the characters all remain rather flat, even the protagonist. The minor characters are even more one-note to the point of caricature.
The story also just rather dragged on and the dialogue felt incredibly stilted.
Theodosia is the daughter of Aaron Burr. And this comes with some baggage. Her mother has passed away and Theodosia must stand in her place beside her father during all his political ambitions. This puts a huge strain on her life. But, when she falls in love with her dad’s arch enemy’s son, Philip, it changes all of her thoughts and perceptions.
Theodosia is a strong female character back when females were considered simpering idiots. However, she fought against the norm the best way she knew how. She wrote articles under a pen name to help women. So, to say I loved her…that is putting it mildly. I found her fascinating and very intelligent.
This is my least favorite time period, early America. But, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved learning about how politics worked back then (not much has changed!) I also enjoyed reading about the daily life of Theodosia and what kind of pawn she became. I fluctuated between 4 and 5 stars. The only reason I settled on 4 was because it was a bit long and parts were a little overly dramatic. Now, this could be attributed to the narrator. But, I didn’t get that as an overall feeling from the book.
I did enjoy the narrator, Allyson Voller. She was excellent with all the male voices, tough to do!
Need a very good historical novel…THIS IS IT! Grab your copy today.
I received this audiobook from the publisher for a honest review.
I'm a massive fan of the musical Hamilton, and I also enjoy historical fiction with a romantic twist. The plot based on the rivalry between Burr and Hamilton, with Theodosia as an assertive, intelligent main character, is conceptually interesting. The narrator does an excellent job. And yet there just isn't enough substance or tension for me to finish the book, and the language (which is often cliched) doesn't save it. I got to 30% but couldn't continue as my mind kept wandering. It might be more appealing to someone who knows very little about that era of American history.
This book has everything I love. Detailed, accurate history which was not sacrificed for other aspects of the story. Tension between characters, I mean what greater rivalry in the history of the United States exists then that between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr? A romance that promises controversy and tension. Requesting this title was a no brainer! So why did I not like it more?
The storyline is simple, what if there had been a romance between Theodosia Burr, Aaron’s daughter and Phillip Hamilton, Alexander’s son? I really like the premise. The romance just didn’t seem plausible in the beginning. Theo was a well educated, serious woman Phillip a ne’er-do-well irreverent young man. Given their families animosity there really wasn’t much to draw the two together. Add to that the groan worthy dialogue between them existing almost entirely of “oh Philips” on Theos part and I just couldn’t see them as a couple. As the book progresses and more of their personalities emerge the story did get more interesting and i found myself rooting for them. The dialogue and prose did continue to cause the occasional groan to escape though. I mean lines like “Theo felt like a bottle of champagne uncorked and bubbling over.” Were Just a little cheesy! But cheer them on I did.
My second issue with the book was how it handled and revealed the history of Hamilton’s and Burr’s rivalry. How it developed and continued to burn. Much of this and the politics of the day were presented as internal expositions by Theo. Most of which came off as dry history lectures. Perhaps presenting this info as conversations between Theo and Phillip might in the beginning have been more interesting and go a long way in drawing the two together.
I’m giving this book 2.5 stars rounded up to 3, since I did end up enjoying the romance somewhat and the accuracy of the history.
Recommended for historical romance fans.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher, OrangeSky Audio and Netgalley. This fact in no way influenced my review.
Thank you to NetGalley and Orange Sky Audio for an audiobook edition of this novel.
This book was just okay for me. I love historical fiction, but not so much historical romance. Someone who enjoys historical romance might like this much more than I did. I realize that this was certainly a fictionalized story, but I just found it so unbelievable. The premise of a love between the daughter of Alexander Hamilton and the son of Raymond Burr would have certainly not been looked on favorably by these families, but I just had a hard time relating to a romance between these two characters. I also would have loved to learn more about the later part of Theodosia's life and her untimely death, which the book does not go into at all. As I always do when reading historical fiction, I look up about the real characters and I would have liked to know more about what happened to Theodosia later. To me, that would have been more interesting!
Love, Theodosia looks at the children of some of America’s founding fathers, imagining – What if Theodosia Burr had fallen in love with Philip Hamilton, the son of her father’s rival?
Despite the fact that the romance in the book is fictional, the author did extensive research to make sure the rest of the book is historically accurate. I have to say, it made me glad that this was not an actual romance, as anyone familiar with the Hamiltons and Burrs knows that this story could never have a happy ending. I really enjoyed the first half of this book, but the second half of the book was very frustrating for me. I believe this book will appeal to fans of Hamilton the musical and to historical romance lovers.
Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me an audio ARC of this book.
