I didn't realise this was the second book in the series which tells Sarah's story of how she lost her family in a bomb attack and was betrayed by her father who she believed had been killed. It can be read as a stand alone as it gives enough detail to understand what happened previously.
When Sarah Gillespie found out her father was still alive, she joined M15 to track him down and bring him to justice for his abandoning his family during the bombing and his involvement with the IRA. Partnered with American Lieutenant Anderson, who takes every opportunity to make Sarah know he doesn't trust her they have to work together in Wales to complete their mission.
As they start closing in on their targets, they realise there is a mole within M15 which puts their lives in danger. They have to learn to trust each other and work together to survive.
A steady paced story
I loved all the interactions with Sarah and Tony in this well written spy book. I don’t think it matters how many times I read a book of this time period with the same type of trope, person’s family killed so person joins somewhere to battle those responsible They are all different people, different places, different circumstances and everyone tears at my heart. I will never get tired of reading them and talking about them. This book is definitely in that category.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book provided by NetGalley.
Sarah is back in the World of MI5 and has been asked to go on another mission.
She promises this will be her last one before returning to her life in Hampshire.
But she has also been told her father is still alive; who left her and her sister for dead. He is now a traitor and she must bring him in for questioning.
I love this world and Lecky gives us a fantastic strong female lead and a life of espionage, spies and danger.
I have read the first book and hadn't realised it is part of a series so was excited to read more with Sarah and it did not disappoint, this time set in London we also explore another character and romance (lost and found) within this novel giving a great balance within the narrative.
I Apologise to the author it took me so long to read this novel I lost in a move and had to start again. And I shall be reading the 3rd novel soon.
This book had been on my to read list for some time and I had not realised there was a first in the series. Despite these factors I really enjoyed this book. It is set in 1941 and centres around Sarah Gillespie - Irish - who is teamed up with an American, Tony Anderson, by MI5, to find her father who is part of an active IRA cell working with the Nazis.
I found this link fascinating as I had little awareness of the activities of the paramilitaries during the war years.
I did find the book slow at times but from the point at which Sarah confronted her father the plot became more interesting as the team search out the ‘mole’.
I enjoyed the friendship between Judith, Gladys and Sarah and probably found this more interesting than that between the American and Sarah - this just seemed inevitable!
Overall an enjoyable read.
Sarah Gillespie is back embarking on another dangerous mission with the M15 in this entertaining WWII historical fiction story. Picking up where the last book ended, we find Sarah’s new mission is to track down her father and his IRA operatives suspected of aiding Nazi sympathizers. Once again Sarah is faced with not knowing who she can trust, putting her in yet another precariously dangerous position.
Espionage, spies, traitors, political intrigue and a touch of romance nicely intertwine making for an engaging read. I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the less known Irish perspective on the war. Truly set this story apart from others I’ve reads.
Thank you to NetGalley and AvonBooksUK for the opportunity to read this enjoyable advance digital copy in return for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I love historical fiction and this one was excellent. Her Last Betrayal was a very exciting read! If you are into WWII Historical Fiction and also love a good thriller, then this is definitely a book for you.
Nazi bombers, American spies and a network of women, this book tells a fascinating story. I enjoyed it very much.
Thank you for the advance reader copy of this historical WWII fiction novel. I tried several times to read this but didn't hold my interest.
A pacy WW2 book with an Irish angle. Compelling heroine and a good story. This was book 2 of a series, but can easily be read as a standalone. Thoroughly enjoyable and can definitely recommend to fans of WW2 fiction.
I didn't realise this was the second book in a series until I finished! Luckily it did not matter, the book explains the history so that you are not missing the first novel. Sarah Gillespie is on a secret mission to track down her father who betrayed her and her sister. Her relationship with her American partner, Anderson did not get off to a good start in their attempt to uncover a spy ring. The story had enough twists and turns, that keeps you turning the pages until the final scene. I found the Irish perspective interesting for a WWII novel.
Well what can I say? Unputdownable! Families torn apart through war and the need to fight for justice for those that were lost. A brilliant WW2 novel incorporating spies, romance and danger. Who is trustworthy and what happens when you find out people close to you are not what they seem? So good I had to read the sequel.
It's always interesting to see books based on WW2 but with an Irish link as the political history of this time is often very interesting and controversial. Pam Lecky truly encompassed this in 'Her Last Betrayal' and I really enjoyed reading this book.
Sarah Gillespie's family were killed in a Nazi bomb in Ireland and as a way to avenge their deaths she joins the British Secret Service. Her mission however is not just against the Nazis but also against her father's IRA links. With the IRA helping out the Nazis Sarah feels that in both avenging the Nazis and bringing her father to justice that she will finally be at peace. However, whilst in training she is linked with American spy Tony Anderson and it is clear from the beginning that Tony completely underestimates and distrusts Sarah. Can she navigate this difficult relationship to get the justice that she seeks?
This book is full of twists and turns and I could not put it down. It truly shows what life would have been like for those trying to put the Nazis down and I enjoyed every minute of this book.
Have been unable to review due to illness. Review coming soon! This novel looks fantastic and I can't wait to read this one!
Sarah Gillespie is back working for MI5 to help them catch her father, a member of the IRA who faked his own death. Along with her father, she is charged with working with a partner, an American ally, to help discover how the IRA is working with the Nazis. As Sarah wonders if she can trust her new partner, she helps discover the fact that double agents are working with the Nazis and are looking to assassinate one of the most influential assets of the war.
Having read the first book in this series, I was so happy when I received access to this ARC. Learning what happened with Sarah and her sorry excuse for a father was well worth the wait. I enjoyed watching Sarah's interactions with her MI5 leaders as well as her American partner. This was a truly enjoyable story.
I enjoy Pam Lecky's writing and her ability to weave together a story full of drama and storylines that keep the reader interested and entertained. Her interesting perspective on the war as someone living in Europe. I will gladly read any story Lecky publishes.
I came into the book with high hopes that it would be a good read and while it was a good read it just didn’t blow me out of the water. I found it rather slow to start and several things very predictable. A solid story just not my favourite.
Thanks to Avon books UK and Net Galley for the advanced copy.
I really liked this one oh my goodness. I liked how the main character of this novel joined secret service to avenge her family because they got killed in the war by Nazi's. This was a thrilling and great novel about trying to do what you think is right. And help a cause that one is passionate about.
I did struggle with this one at first as the momentum for me wasn’t the same as the previous book.
But I started getting into in about 40% and then thoroughly enjoyed it!
It had some very exciting parts in it and some scary bits too!
Well written and I am pleased that I read it
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books for giving me a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
I read the first instalment of the book by Pam Lecky and I can truthfully say this one was so much better than the first. I’m always weary of sequels and how the author will continue the story after such a good first novel. However, Lecky did not disappoint and provided the perfect sequel to Her Secret War. In this novel, the reader follows Sarah as she continues her work for MI5 and hunts down her father who is a member of the IRA. This is a part of World War Two history which is so often forgotten in amongst the other stories to tell. I was so glad that Lecky decided to write about this part of World War Two history in Ireland’s neutrality.
While there is nothing in this book I could possibly criticise, I would only comment that I would have loved for the book to be longer. Although, while it was shorter than I had expected, Lecky kept me in my toes with every plot twist and revealed secret. I couldn’t have asked for a better sequel to the first instalment and I can’t wait to see what Lecky brings out next. Rest assured, I will be purchasing copies of the first and second book to add to my bookshelf amongst my favourite historical fiction novels of all time.
A fantastic sequel to Her Secret War! I absolutely loved this. Fast paced, full of brilliant characters, plenty of secrets and spy action to keep you on the edge of your seat, turning those pages wanting to see how it ends
I didn't realise this was the second book in a series, but it didn't matter, the book explains the past in a good way.
Loved the relationship between the 2 main characters, one American and one Irish, they didn't get off to a good start in the partnership for working together in MI5!
Well written and although I don't need to read the previous book I'm going to, as I think this will be a series of books to treasure.
Thank you netgalley
