Just start reading. If you aren't hooked by page 10, I'd be surprised.
Every time I had to put the book down, I would just think about the story until I could start reading again.
Agatha Christie would be proud.
Enjoy!
I think I've come to realize that this is just not the author for me.
I don't like the story, the characters are blah, and the setting is underwhelming.
I tried giving this a chance but a couple chapters in my attention was waning and after about 45 percent of that I just started skim reading to get through the mystery and before I knew it my assumptions were confirmed. I guessed the ending 3 pages deep and it was lackluster.
I can't tell you what I disliked about the story without spoiling the entire book so there's that. The characters all sorta blended together for me to distinguish between them and they also carried that wealthy undertone that I despise 😑
The setting is an apartment building in freaking Paris but that's about the only view of Paris we get which makes sense because the mystery is about the apartment but so many missed chances.
I'm learning to stop picking up books from authors I continue to rate low I promise!
Disappointed but not surprised.
Lucy Foley does it again. Another great mystery that’s almost impossible to put down. I wish she could write as quickly as I read!
While this one isn’t as locked down as her other novels, I’d still consider it a locked room mystery. You have one crime, a limited number of suspects, and only a couple of settings.
To say more would be a disservice to the author and your enjoyment. While this wasn’t my favorite by her, I still consider it a fantastic read for any mystery lover or Lucy Foley fan!
Paris may be the city of love but “The Paris Apartment” places us in the middle of a mystery where things aren’t always as they seem. Jess comes to Paris to run away from her troubles but that’s where her real troubles begin. She arrives at her half-brothers apartment but he isn’t there and there are signs of trouble. This mystery has wonderfully well-developed characters, tension, action, and unexpected twists. Jess grows and learns more about herself and her abilities and we go along for the ride. Thanks to NetGalley and William Morrow and Custom House for providing an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Well, Lucy Foley has once again given us a psychological thriller and very entertaining novel with the The Paris Apartment. I think this author is in the same category as Ruth Ware, Riley Sager and Tarryn Fisher. (I know there's more that I read like her but can't think of them now!) I loved her novel The Guest List so I grabbed this one when it became available! Loved that one and this one was good as well. Good characters that I had a love/hate relationship with and lots of action packed, short chapters that kept me reading long after I should have turned out the lights.
I was shocked at the end even though I thought I had it all figured out!
This was my first Lucy Foley novel and I am not disappointed! We follow hot mess Jess: a young woman coming to Paris to escape some troubles, hoping to crash with her journalist big brother Ben in his swanky new apartment. But when she arrives, Ben is nowhere to be found. His many strange neighbors are always lurking, and their odd behavior starts to make Jess wonder if any– or all– of them are behind her brother’s disappearance. With shocks, quick chapters, and many insanely delightful narrators, The Paris Apartment will go down as another solid thriller for Foley.
Evoking Rear Window and Agatha Christie with a touch of Chris Bohjalian's The Guest Room, this locked room mystery is perfect for fans of unreliable narrators, twisty plots, and gothic settings in which no one is who they pretend to be.
Lucy Foley has done it again! This might be my favorite of the three of hers I’ve read thus far. So many twists and turns that keep you guessing right up to the very end. It’s like Rear Window meets Knives Out, like Only Murders in the Building without the comic relief. Honestly I hope this one makes it to the big screen at some point. Definitely an edge-of-your-seat nail-biting thriller that is not to be missed. Move this one to the top of your TBR pile. You won’t be able to put it down.
*I read an advanced reader’s e-proof from Net Galley.
Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read the ARC! This one started off a little slow for me, but I loved Lucy Foley's other works (The Hunting Party and The Guest List) so I pushed through and it definitely paid off. The vibe is super creepy and had me guessing how things would work out right up until the end. The protagonist, Jess, was not very likable but it was one of the things I enjoyed about this book. I don't really think any of the characters were likable, but a super dysfunctional family will do that to you! I can't wait to see what Lucy Foley comes out with next.
I loved it!! A locked room mystery, a dysfunctional family, unreliable narrators in a rundown eccentric apartment in Paris and you will devour this twisted mystery thriller. At the beginning, it's unsure who to trust. Everyone in the apartment building begins with "This would have never happen had it not been for Ben." This sets in motion.... What did he do to make everyone dislike him?
Ben and his sister Jess lost their mom to an overdose when they were young. Ben is adopted by a wealthy family, graduated from Cambridge and now a career as a journalist. His lifestyle was exquisite and reflected in his demeanor. A handsome, suave man with a popular social life lived a different lifestyle than his sister who was pushed from foster home to foster home and eventually on her own. She pleas to stay at his apartment after her employer sexually harassed her and she quit her job. He sends her directions and a voicemail of instructions how to enter the gate, but it cuts off in a horrifying, questionable ending. When she arrives, he is no where to be found. She picks the lock and enters with no clue to his disappearance except blood on the cat's paw.
The tenants are not friendly, appearing guilty and have secrets to hide, but very wealthy. They are all leery of her unexpected appearance and questions. Their plans are set in motion and include getting rid of Jess. The Concierge knows all their secrets and warns her to stop looking for answers.
I love the old building with its hidden staircases, servant passages and a wine cellar. So many secrets....and she has no one to rely on and a language barrier with the local police.
Thank you NetGalley and William Morrow publishing for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
A solid mystery with a beautiful setting. Lucy Foley keeps readers guessing until the end in this mystery thriller that transports readers to a bizarre Paris apartment building.
In this book Foley proves that is possible to actually write a jump scare. Wow, the first part of this book is just terrifying. It is an absolute page turner, the reader is completely intrigued and cannot stop reading, hoping to discover just what is up with the strange residents of this apartment building.
There is a delightful twist about 50% through that elevates the novel to the level Jordan Peele and Ari Aster.
Loved the setting.
Fascinating characters.
Interesting references to art throughout.
All around creepy and wonderful read!
This is the second book I've read by this author, and I loved this one so much more. This one is a psychological crime drama set in a creepy Paris apartment. Most of the characters are unlikeable, as well they should be.
No one can be trusted in this sprawling Paris estate.
Thank you to HarperCollins Canada for this ARC copy! Once again, Lucy Foley has created a super dark yet fun mystery story. It follows a young woman named Jess who is a bit troubled and on the run from an incident at her previous job so she comes to stay with her more successful brother at his Paris apartment. When she arrives, her brother has disappeared and she gets wrapped up in solving where he is and what has been going on at this luxurious apartment building. As always, we see the story from multiple POVs including Jess and a number of the apartment residents who are all pretty suspicious. I think this book was a bit slower than Lucy Foley's other books but the story was probably more complex. There were some decent twists; however, they could have been more shocking. I do quite like her style of writing and I was pleasantly surprised to see the formula of this book was a bit different than the Guest List and the Hunting Party.
I really love the shifting pov right out of the gate. It works well to give the reader a vivid image of the building and everyone’s perspective. What is the deal with Benjamin?! Benjamin Daniel’s, what did you do? Very mysterious.
This book screams to hit the screen. The descriptions of the building and secret areas creates such vivid images. Something about it reminds me of the movie Knives Out. The big fancy house/building, the interconnectedness of the characters. The cast of characters, each with their own motives and grudges against Ben. Pretty compelling!
Last few chapters had me saying “What?!” out loud forgetting others were within earshot. So that’s always a good sign. The book turns a bit dark and really kicks into high gear the last half.
A big thank you to Netgalley and William Morrow for providing the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Wow! Speechless! Best thriller I have read in a long time. Did not really enjoy The Guest List so I was reluctant to start this one……..am I glad I did.
Gothic, Parisian apartment with secrets that all the tenants are hiding. Could not figure this one out till halfway through. Great writing, great story!
If you love thrillers you will love how this one unfolds with the many twists and turns, loved the ending. Not everyone is what they seem and may have redeeming qualities.
Must buy and read this book!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the arc copy of this book, but it is not enough, will be placing my pre order for this book tonight! Must own it!
This is my second book by Lucy Foley and I really enjoyed it! After getting herself into a sticky situation and having nowhere else to turn, Jess asks to stay with her half brother Ben in Paris. He reluctantly agrees. When she arrives though she finds that Ben has been living in a pretty posh apartment and he is nowhere to be found. As she becomes increasingly concerned and starts digging into her brother's disappearance she learns that the other residents of the apartment building are none to keen on her prying. PA is told from multiple perspectives. Lucy Foley does a great job of building up the intrigue without giving too much away. The residents are weird, they definitely have something to hide, and what in the heck happened to Ben?? The ending was definitely a surprise and quite satisfying. I blew through this book in two days. Will recommend.
As with layers of onions this story also "unpeels" step by step and as it does the reader's outlook changes step by step. The reader is given a hint of the outcome at the beginning and then watches the story unfold. But just as he/she thinks he has it all figured out, the story does a 180 degree turn and SURPRISE, what you thought is not the solution at all. One of the best attributes of this book is that in the end, everything comes out OK after a very circuitous route, which provides a very satisfactory conclusion.
Definitely fast-paced, but it had too many POV's for my liking. I just couldn't follow the story that well and did actually stop reading because it felt like too much of a chore to keep going. This is my first Foley book, and maybe I'll give it another shot at a later time, but now is no that time. I think maybe if I were more familiar with Foley's style, then I'd like it more.
The Paris Apartment is fast-paced with short, snappy chapters that keep the plot moving and the reader thinking ‘just one more chapter’! Told from the different perspectives of those living in the apartment, it is easy to keep track of the various threads of the story. There are some great suspenseful, tense scenes and a good twist at the end. I was also impressed at how well the author used the apartment and Paris itself as an effective backdrop to the plot. I’ll be checking out this author’s future works!
