I was hooked by this story immediately. The scene was really well set and the characters all felt real and believable. Libby was such a nasty piece of work. It was really fun getting to know her and uncovering new motives for people to want her dead.
I thought the pacing was just right, there was no getting bogged down in unnecessary details and every scene advanced the plot.
The only thing that let this book down for me was the ending - I've seen the 'twist' done so many times before that it's just boring to read now and I saw it coming a mile off who would be responsible.
The first two thirds of this were spectacular, I just wish it hadn't ended so predictably but I would still recommend it as a good read.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of this unpredictable, unputdownable thriller. The Night of the Party by Anna-Lou Weatherley had me up all night with its jaw-dropping twists and turns.
When 17 year old Libby is brutally murdered in the woods behind her house, the list of suspects immediately starts to grow. Her half brother has always resented her, but is he capable of murder? Who is the mysterious stranger who was seen talking to her at the bar the night before she waa killed? As the investigation progresses, we learn that Libby left behind a shockingly long list of enemies... and she wasn't the innocent teenager that her mom believed her to be...
Five stars for this shocking, twisty novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.
There is a lot that is unloaded in this sordid tale. One dinner party will unravel the secrets ,Amy people have been harboring. The author cleverly intertwined the imtrqcies of the plot like barnacles to each character. I didn’t anticipate just how far those tentacles would reach. I liked Dan the best. Libby was just repugnant and the rest of characters were pretty unlikable. Cheating, lying, drugs, betrayal, this one has it all.
The Night of the Party is a five star thriller/mystery. The plot centers around the death (quite graphic murder) of a young lady on the night that the main character(s) of the book are hosting/attending a dinner party. The story is fast-paced and each chapter left me guessing. There were plenty of twists, and while I was able to figure out the main reveals before the end, I was still second guessing myself up until about 85 percent through the book. I enjoyed the few flashback chapters that allowed the reader to get to know the murdered character better. The themes of manipulation, revenge, dishonesty, and relationship are apparent throughout the book. I would recommend The Night of the Party to anyone looking for a gripping thriller or who loves a good crime novel.
A very good domestic thriller, read this In almost one sitting it was that unputdownable.
The night of a dinner party in suburbia, wine and cocktails are flowing, Libby, the daughter of the household performs on the piano before meeting a friend. But she never returns home. As the story develops there are lots of twists and turns and we find out that Libby is not as perfect as her mother thinks. But who would want her dead?.
I really enjoyed this book, I liked all the red herrings, just as I had my suspicions another aspect was brought into play.
This is my first book by Anna-Lou but certainly won't be my last.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this advanced copy. My opinions are my own and I'm under no obligation to leave a review
A Menacing Undercurrent…
A picture perfect scene - stunning house, stunning woodland, the seemingly perfect Drayton family and their best friends enjoy a perfect evening. Or do they? Not everything is quite as perfect as it may seem. Intense and chilling psychological suspense which maintains a menacing undercurrent throughout with a credible cast and a plot peppered with perfectly timed surprises. A tense and wholly enjoyable one sit read.
WOW. That was such a great read! One of the best of the year. Really loving this author, Anna Lou Weatherley who had the five star The Couple on Cedar Court, she knows how to bring you in from the page one and refuses to let you go, Meanwhile,, you are yourself refusing to look up from page after page of lies, deceit, heartbreak, tragedy and survival. Two couples, a son and a daughter and a couple of other minor characters keeps this book totally enthralling as the copper Dan Riley,, who we have met several times before, attempts to solve the brutal murder of a sweet teenage girl who wouldn’t hurt a fly. Unless it refused help her. Excellent, chilling and tense with such flawed people you have to really feel bad for them. Correction, most of them. Some of them. One of them?
I’d highly recommend this book and I’d say it’s the best yet by this author.
It’s the perfect domestic thriller with plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing throughout.
The writing is fast paced and engaging.
It’s definitely worthy of a big fat 5 stars.
This is a very good suspense novel. The authors expert writing and quick wit got me from the very beginning. Lots of twists and turns and unsuspecting surprises make a very satisfying read, highly recommend!
In a beautiful house surrounded by woodland, the Drayton family and their dearest friends are enjoying dinner together. The wine is flowing, the meal has been lovingly prepared, and it’s going to be an evening none of them will ever forget…
OMG! This drew me in quickly and there was that instant tension of a drama unfolding. An incredibly well thought out, very original plotline and one I had not foreseen. I turned ever quicker and devoured this- the sign of a gripping, well written read. A captivating, rollercoaster of a book. Loved it.
Good book! Wow this book had a lot of twists and turns! It also had suspense, intrigue, and a twisty who done it! some of These characters were very messed up! Lol it was a really good book! I will definitely recommend reading this one! Its well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
She lied to me.
Libby never lies…we don’t tell lies in this house.
It can’t be her body they found. Libby went to a concert with her friend and said she would be home by 10:30.
Unfortunately Libby was not who they thought she was and neither was anyone else.
The Draytons were hosting a dinner party with another couple, and their son Brandon was also in attendance the night Libby disappeared.
When Libby doesn't come home, the nightmare starts, and the nightmare wasn't just because of Libby's disappearance. Many other things were going on in this household too.
Many surprises await the reader as you find out about the Draytons.
Some intense reading, but very good with all the twists, secrets, and one very manipulative character.
So very good...I hope you get to read this book. 5/5

A fantastic psychological thriller.
The story revolves around the Drayton family. Eve with her husband, Tom are having a dinner party with their close friends, Una and Jim. Her daughter Libby goes to meet her best friend Katie but doesn't come home. Later she's found in the woods. Someone murdered her brutally but why?
Detective Dan is on the case and upon investigation he found that Libby was a pathological liar and a manipulative girl who lied and used everyone.
Evrything isn't as simple as it seems. Una, Jim and Tom have their own secrets which they're not telling.
Anna has written a fantastic psychological thriller with twists aplenty.
What I Like?:-
1 The plot, which is intriguing.
2 Characters, every character has its own fear and goal and ofcourse multiple layers.
3 Narration, which is simple and intresting. Anna's books have a mind blowing narration and this book is no exception.
4 Twists aplenty, One after another twists come and make the reader gasp.
5 The ending. It ended on a good note.
Overall, this is a must read psychological thriller of 2022. Highly recommended.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me an advanced copy of this psychological thriller.
I really enjoyed this murder mystery although I found all of the patties in this story somewhat sympathetic as they were all very damaged in their own ways. No one comes out of this one well as everyone seemed to have secrets and lies a plenty. It was a good read though and I can see it on ITV drama at some point.
i absolutely loved this book from start to finish, i was drawn in from the first page, found it very difficult to put it down.
