Possums Are Not Cute!

Pub Date: 10 May 2022
Yes, Possums are cute.
Adorable book with some pretty cool facts.
Ok, I admit, my heart went SQUEE SO MANY TIMES from the pictures in this book, I lost count! Possums are SOOOOO CUUUUUTE!!!
As well as giving my heart exercise, this book also informed me of, yet again, how amazingly weird nature is. Mother Nature either has a REALLY warped sense of humor, or she is high. Like all of the time. Because possums are STRANGE little critters.
BUT they are also AWESOME. They are my heroes, because they eat TICKS. Like LOTS of them. Ticks are the dirty needle of the insect world and now with ticks carrying a diseases that MAKES YOU ALLERGIC TO EATING MEAT, we need ticks gone, like yesterday.
Possums also eat other nasty, disgusting, disease carrying things, as well as snakes and scorpions that are dangerous to humans, so I am Team Possum all the way.
There are a lot of negative myths out there about possums that this book does it's best to dispel, as well as stresses that POSSUMS ARE WILD ANIMALS, NOT PETS. Since possums have such strange diets and specific needs, if there is an injured possum that you find, wildlife rescue needs to be called.
The biggest thing I picked up from this book is that possums are are friends and we want them in our lives, though not up close, just like any other wild animal.
I highly recommend this book, especially if you live in an area that has possums. The pictures ALONE make this book amazing. The information in it is priceless as well.
5, possums ARE cute, stars!
My thanks to NetGalley and Quirk Books for an eARC of this book to read and review.
Adorable, adorable, adorable! Possums are DEFINITELY cute. A very fun and surprisingly informative little book. Would make a great gift of any animal lover.
I was thrilled to be approved to read and review this title on NetGalley by the publisher Quirk Books, because, you see, my mother once had a pet possum. She found him one morning in our front yard, and apparently took very good care of him as he grew to a monstrous size. Jethro, as he was soon named, loved to eat and sleep, and sadly didn't have much opportunity to do much else. Being a nocturnal beast, he spent most of his days slumbering beside our toilet. Indeed that's one of my most indelible memories of childhood - peeing beside an unconscious possum.
But, yeah . . . he was pretty cute.
The author of this fun book does a great job of dispelling myths about these gentle creatures who are more of a friend to gardeners and homeowners than a pest. Dining on such delicacies as ticks, cockroaches, and venomous snakes, possums keep your yard free of undesirables. Intelligent, despite a grape-sized brain, these critters have managed to survive and thrive for 65 million years.
I could go on and on with the facts I learned from reading this book, but it's best you check it out for yourself. Part science textbook, part picture book, you won't want to miss the plentiful photos of these cute (yes, I did say CUTE!) and cuddly beasts. This title would be a great addition to any library or school classroom.
Just a note: the author of this book, unlike my mother, is a trained wildlife rehabber, and while possums are cute, they prefer you admire them from a distance. Animal rescue is much better left to the pros.
Contrary to the title, this was a super cute book about opossums! They are such cool creatures and make the world a better place. I loved all of the great photographs of rescued possums throughout the book. Plus, I learned some amazing possum facts.
This is an adorable, informative little book about possums, full of myths vs. facts. They’re so cute!
It’s a great gift book full of sweet photos and fun facts, like they eat lots of ticks. They also eat venomous snakes, cockroaches, and scorpions. Go possums! Both adults and kids could enjoy learning about these sometimes misunderstood marsupials. It comes out May 10. Thank you to Quirk Books and NetGalley for my copy.
Possums Are SOOOO Cute!
Look, was I ever a possum naysayer? a possum hater? a strong believer that possum were lil uggos?! Absolutely not. So I may not be the target audience for this little gem of a book, but hey who doesn't want to surround themselves in page after page of adorableness and facts?! There are so many cute photos in this book I thought my eyes were going to turn into literal heart eye emojis, and I loved all the random possum facts peppered throughout the book as well. This was an all around win folks. All the stars!!
I received an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, so thank you to all involved for that!
Opossums are not cute. That's right. THEY ARE FREAKIN ADORABLE. THE MOST IMPORTANT ANIMAL IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD. I love opossums. I'm a wildlife rehabber and they are my absolute favorite animal to help. But before starting my rehab work I had never even seen an opossum. The moment I saw my first baby opossum, I decided that they were the cutest animal on the face of the planet and I would do anything I could to make sure the world knew how important they are to our planet. Ally knows. This book is exactly what the world needs. Short and sweet, filled with all the facts and a healthy dose of those adorable faces, Possums are Not Cute is perfect. I am so incredibly grateful that this book has been published and I'm honored to have read it early. I want to put this book in every library in America!
If you read just one non-fiction book this year, make it #PossumsAreNotCute, which I thank #NetGalley for providing me with a copy.
First off, this is an absolutely beautiful-looking book, with adorable photos that will be sure to steal your heart. And if they don't, it's not the possums that are monsters, And that's all I will insinuate about that.
And more importantly, the book is extremely informative, but not in a preachy or boring way. It's full of interesting and fascinating facts about the Americas' only marsupial, and its relatives in Australia, and helpful hints on how to help protect them. I imagine this will be a book that will be enthusiastically signed out of libraries and hope it would find its way into the hands of young people interested in animals, their habitats, and their conservation.
I highly recommend this book! Ally Burguieres has done a wonderful job creating this fun and quick read.
This book is a delight! I am all for a "public relations campaign" to improve the general opinion of the possum. This tick-eating little bush creature is underappreciated worldwide. And now I realize that they're cute, too boot!
I am an animal lover and I especially have a heart for the outcasts. My ferrets can vouch for me here. I didn’t need a book to convince me that possums are cute, but I sure didn’t mind seeing all of their adorable photos while learning more about them.
There really wasn’t anything I did not love about Possums Are Not Cute. It’s packed full of precious full color photos and educational information presented in a fun, easy to digest manner. I knew some things about possums (opossums) already, but I learned so much more from this book.
I do believe, upon reading more about their introversion and misunderstood nature, that possums are my spirit animal. I have, in fact, never related to any animal more in my life. Don’t tell my ferrets.
I know I’ll need to get myself a finished copy of this when it comes out!
I am immensely grateful to Quirk Books for my digital review copy through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
Possums Are Not Cute will be out in May 2022!
I received this copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I am familiar with Ally Burguieres from social media and was thrilled to see she had written a book. I’ve always loved opossums but still learned new things about these magnificent marsupials while reading this book. The pictures were delightful and enjoyed the ‘Possums Throughout History’ asides. Burguieres knows opossums and it shows! Not only does she dispel the negative untruths that have always surrounded North America’s only marsupial, she demonstrates the role licensed wildlife rehabilitators play in the lives of possums and takes every chance she gets to remind readers the best place for a possum is the wild.
I’ve got one thing to say and one thing only: Ally Burguieres understood the assignment. Fantastic work countering the many myths about the tick-eating, cat food stealing critters in our backyards.
Who doesn't love an opossum!? They are SO CUTE -- no matter what the myth may say.
This is a wonderfully informative and playfully written book about opossums and all the wonderful ways they contribute to the world. The photos throughout are adorable, and will keep readers engaged. A great book for adults and kids alike!
As someone who previously did not believe that possums are cute, I can confidently say that I am now a true believer thanks to this book. Burguieres did an excellent job of combining cute images with fascinating information and heartwarming storytelling. I now understand and sympathize with possums in ways I never would have expected. This is an excellent animal rescue advocacy book, and I will definitely be recommending it for purchase at my library. Adults and kids alike will love it.
There are 2 things wrong with the title of this book - (i) they are actually talking about opossums (ii) they are cute. But, this is an insightful read into the world of these oft-maligned and massively misunderstood creatures. They aren't the ferocious hissing beasts that they appear, rather nervous shy creatures that tend to react badly in unexpected social situations (same).
These pointy kitties (c Ralph Wiggum) are a valuable part of the North American ecosystem, feasting on poisonous snakes and other terrible things. They are also undeniably, weirdly cute. My favourite fact about them is that when they play dead (aka playing possum) they emit a foul stench that makes them smell like they are decomposing. Enviable life skills.
I used to think my spirit animal was the sloth, now I'm considering switching to the possum.
This was an adorably informative book on possums. The author does a fantastic job on informing the reader about the many interesting features of the possum. Possums are cute!
I recieved an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. Opossums are cute and I love that the author is trying to show how cute they actually are, however, some of the pictures show inappropriate views of opossums. Working and volunteering for a local non-profit that has opossums, we never want to show them crawling on us or appearing to no longer be wild because there is always someone who sees this and goes out and tries to pick one up. Even if these are permanently injured animals and now education animals, I don't feel that it is an appropriate way to portray opossums.
One word: adorable! This was such a fun and cute way to teach about Possums. I loved all of the photos but the information in this book was also great. This is a great way to teach kids about wild animals in a way that is fun and easy to understand.
Darling, fun, packed with adorable photos and great illustrations, interesting, and educational. Happily recommended. This would make a fun gift for kids or possum lovers, too.
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.
