This was a very fun fantasy with a dash of paranormal and suspense. I found the romance to be very sweet! The main character was a strong and clever protagonist! It also had very funny parts! Therefore, I recommend this for fans of Seraphina!
This was fun!
Amandine is a paranormal investigation sent to find out why ghosts plague a royal house. However, her undercover persona is quickly blown by the Crown Prince known to all as His Vileness.
I loved Amandine. She had enough self-deprecation to wonder at the prince's motivations and enough self-confidence to maintain her dignity.
I adored her subtle ways of undermining her tormentors and elevating herself above their pettiness.
There was a little confusion over some rationale during the fight scenes at the end but it was so small it didn't spoil the enjoyment of the story at all.
I do think her infatuation with her mentor could have been more show rather than tell but overall it didn't really matter.
A lovely romance with a smart heroine and a cheeky hero.
Action-packed with a young badass ghost hunter in a steampunk setting, this is an awesome read. The romance seems a bit forced, but the characters are larger than life. The fairies were an excellent addition too.

I enjoyed reading this light young adult book from the start to the end. Nice mix of fantasy, romance and detective story. Why Prince is called His Vileness and ghosts appearing around him? Can girl-detective and commoner in one found out a culprit and become a princess? Read, find out and enjoy nice story.
If you are looking for a light-fantasy read with easy word-building, then this is the book for you!
Amandine Klinghoffer is courageous, smart, and determinant. She has to investigate the haunting and murder in the palace. This is her first solo case, a chance of proving herself. The prince and the princess may have a hand in the murder, but something is terribly wrong in the magical kingdom, all magical creatures face a great threat. Amandine finds herself entangled between secrets, love, and magic.
I read detective books after a while, and I loved this one! The author has done a great job by mixing fantasy, with mystery effortlessly. Can't wait to read more books by the author!!
Thanks to NetGalley for providing me an ARC of this book.
Thanks to the publisher for providing an eARC of Your Vileness in exchange for an honest review.
Is it bad that I think this romance would have been a lot better if exactly 0 of the characters had any form of romantic feelings for any of the other characters? Like, snarky mystery solving assholes? Right up my ally. Ever romantic relationship in this? Either hated it or couldn't care less.
Your Vilness was nothing special. It's a cookie-cutter YA book that was enjoyable, but not great. It was also so full of poorly executed tropes. The story was so predictable too. The plot twists weren't exciting at all.
Though Your Vilness attempted the opposites attract trope, I couldn't care less for the romance in this book. Amandine and Ivan couldn't be more different. Once in a while, they had great banter. I liked them as friends, but my feelings for them as their attraction grew didn't change. Their connection felt forced and it might have helped a bit if there had been a few chapters from Ivan's point of view.
The characters in general weren't compelling. Most of them were unlikeable. They were either bland or really over the top. On top of that, Amandine and Ivan didn't have much character development.
I liked the Sherlock Holmes vibes this book gave mixed with revolution-era France. I think this book would be great for middle schoolers or people new to the YA genre.
** spoiler alert ** Your Vileness is a hauting mystery/romance, with magic and fairies that brings a young detective and a prince together to solve the case of his haunting.
I really enjoyed the mystery of trying to figure out who caused the haunting and why.
Though I did figure out the who, I still didnt figure out the why and who else, right up until it was revealed.
The connection between Amandline and Ivan seemed a little forced, i would have liked a bit more of a spark and maybe a few chapters from his pov.
Though I would have loved to have been there for the wedding (finger crossed for a deleted scene or book 2 🤞)
Special thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for a free, electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review
MC is likable, and the villains are not who you'd expect. I love the fairies, the magic, and the Sherlock feel!
It's a fast-paced story, so you're sure not to be bored. The characters are a bit over the top at times, so try not to take it too seriously. Think a little bit of Alice in Wonderland vibes.
Trigger warning: grooming vibes in this one.
Thanks Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my free review!
A fun charming read I suppose. Incredibly predictable but incredibly effective for getting you out of a reading slump. The only thing I disliked would be the age difference.
I went into this not really expecting that much, as I haven't been reading a lot of YA books recently, however I was pleasantly surprised!
This book is super fun, has banter and also the sprinkle of romance we all love!
The story goes that Amandine (who is an actual ghost hunter) is sent to prince Ivan to help him with his own ghosty problems. Cute right? Well, once she gets there things don't really add up - and so our story begins...
If you want something fun and easy to read, I would definitely recommend your vileness!
Amandine is a seventeen year old detective who specializes in ghost hunting. When her mentor sends her off to the royal castle for her first solo case, she must figure out why Prince Ivan, AKA His Vileness, is being haunted. Will she be able to solve the case even though things aren’t what they seem?
I feel like this book is having an identity crisis. I’m not sure what it’s supposed to be and I don’t think it knows either. Oftentimes the plot jumps from point A to point D without even referencing the necessary B and C, so you’re left with things feeling very abrupt. That abruptness along with simplistic character interactions makes it read more like middle grade fiction. One moment characters are mortal enemies, and the next they say things like, “I’ll be your best friend forever!” Wait………what?!?
The story is light-hearted ( sometimes too silly) and humorous (though some of the jokes unintentionally fall really flat), and I think preteens may enjoy it. Liana is quite a hoot and the quirky magic of Glamwein is fun. The romance is appropriate for a younger audience, and Ivan really isn’t vile; he’s just an immature brat who slowly becomes less bratty. Considering the title of the book, I was expecting more on that front. I think if the plot was less contrived and the characters had some more depth this could be a winner.
Your Vileness is a YA fantasy romance that felt like putting on a cozy cardigan. I really liked it!
Amandine Klinghoffer is our main character, a feisty young detective with a specialty in ghost hunting who is sent out by her mentor on her first solo case – the mystery of the multitude of ghosts haunting Prince Ivan of Glamwein.
Unlike Amandine, who is driven and focused and hard-working, Ivan seems to be an arrogant, lazy aristocrat who’s more trouble than he’s worth to the royal family.
Ivan immediately starts trying to dissuade Amandine from investigating the case, which strikes her as very odd. What could Prince Ivan have done to attract the ghosts? Could he have murdered someone? Is he covering something up?
This book really leaned on its funny side and didn’t take itself too seriously, which I always love. There were lots of fairies and crowns and mystery and magic. Also, I really enjoyed how fresh the writing was and how it really made this book stand out against lots of other YAs which have similar tropes and stories.
I guess I didn’t find the characters super compelling, which is okay – I’m sure it’s more of a ‘me’ thing. I still had a great time!
This is a fun often laugh out loud romp that will get you thinking of right and wrong. Our heroine Amandine comes from a logic based background even though she can see ghosts. She’s been apprenticed to a famous detective whom she admires greatly. She is thrilled when he gives her a solo case going undercover for the King and Queen of the magical kingdom of Glamwein. She is assigned to protect Prince Ivan from ghosts bent on attacking him and find out who is sending them.
I love the logic versus magic contrasts and the supporting characters gave me reason to smile in this delightful fairytale. I felt for Amandine and was cheering her on from first page to last.
Amandine Klinghoffer is a daring young detective working on her first independent case in the fabled kingdom of Glamwein. Prince Ivan, the lazy, cowardly, good-for-nothing embarrassment of the realm is hiding something.
He would rather profess his undying love for Amandine than give her any useful information. He is obviously using romance to distract her from finding the truth.
As Amandine investigates with Ivan’s “help” she begins to suspect a plot that threatens the fate of the entire kingdom and its magical being
Ivan isn't charming enough to pull off the vileness part but he isn't a horrible character. Just not the perfect romantic character for me. Her mentor's feelings for her are kind of awkward because of the large age gap. The romance is kind of so-so for me. However, the mystery is wrapped up nicely and I do like the ending. I do like Amandine quite a lot aside from her romantic feelings.... A great mystery overall. The story is funny and entertaining.
Thanks to the publisher for providing an arc.
A young lady detective on her first case, a vile prince with ghosts haunting him, and political intrigue come together in this story filled with ghosts, romance, and politics. Amandine Klinghoffer has always wanted to be a detective, when her mentor and crush gives her her first solo case she jumps at the opportunity. Her case is to go to the kingdom of Glamwein and solve the murder in the royal palace, it also helps that Amandine can see and talk to ghost. The only hiccup? A lying, cruel, and attractive prince who is one minute humiliating her and the next professing his love to her. prince Ivan is lazy, cowardly, and is constantly getting in Amandine’s way, almost as if he doesn’t want her to solve the case. He is particularly keen on trying to get her to fall in love with him but Amandine soon finds that she actually needs his help to unravel the case. She will soon find herself in for more than she had initially thought and that maybe the cruel prince isn’t as cruel and maybe her longtime crush and mentor isn’t as dashing as she had hoped. With a mystery on hand and a kingdom to save this detective has her work cut out for her. Amandine is a young detective, and you definitely get the feeling of how young she is. Ivan is just insufferable, there I said it. I did not find him charming in the least and just found myself telling Amandine to solve the case and gtfo of there and away from this dude. Girl, focus on your career. One minute she’s telling herself she’s going to focus on her case the next she’s just hanging out with Ivan or mooning over him. Also the whole mentor who is 30+ but looks younger who raised her and has a crush on her??? sir??? no thank you?? she is like 17 please no. The book wraps up everything by the end and is fine. Though this didn’t work for me as much as I had hoped maybe it’ll work for you.
*Thanks Netgalley and R.R. Orange for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*
In R.R. Orange's Your Vileness, a detective in training, Amandine, is sent on her first solo case. In their neighboring country, the crowned prince is being haunted by ghosts. She has to determine the cause without the kingdom discovering who she truly is. But when she arrives, Prince Ivan seems more interested in playing cruel pranks and professing his undying love for her than curing his affliction. Can Amandine solve the case while simultaneously navigating delicate politics and scheming royals?
The magic, the twists and turns of the mystery, and the banter between Amandine and Ivan add up to being the most wholesome ghost story. While being terribly vile (hence the name of the novel), Ivan is equally charming. Amandine is a great heroine to root for because she isn't afraid to be herself, even if she's been mocked for it in the past. Even when it's difficult, she sticks to her morals.
Your Vileness, while being adorable and sweet, is also incredibly predictable and cheesy. At times, even for a young adult novel, it reads as a bit juvenile. While Amandine is only 17, prince Ivan is 23/24, and he behaves more like a teenager than she does. The other object of Amandine's affection is in his 30's, and some moments become uncomfortable because of it.
With all the above mentioned, I rated it 3.5 out of 5 stars. It's a fun mystery with a cute love story, even if it's a little infantile.
To be fair, I would say some of my opinions stem from me simply not being the target audience. This is the type of novel I would recommend to readers who want a strong heroine but are too young to be reading graphic violence or other adult content. It would be perfect for teenagers looking for an easy-to-read, magical take on Sherlock Holmes-type sleuthing.
