Martha has done it again. She has crafted an enjoyable and witty story. I loved everything about this one. It was well written and contained some humor.
Martha Waters wrote in her author's note that this was the most difficult book of the trilogy to write. As a reader, this surprised me as it felt effortless, as if the author knew the characters so well that the dialogue and internal feelings magically appeared on the page and felt so real and right. This was my favorite of the trilogy, and I loved all three books, but this one was particularly hilarious. Emily and Julian were utterly adorable, and their chemistry and affection was off-the-charts. It was so fun to revisit the other two couples, who added even more comic relief. I felt like a guest at the ton eavesdropping on the conversations of the coolest people in residence. And while there was only one spicy scene, it was perfectly delicious. And Cecil the cat was a hoot. I'm not sure if a fourth book is in the works, but I hope so.
Martha Waters does it again in her historical Regency rom-com. Witty banter, compelling characters, and thoughtful storylines come together for this delightful read.
As the third installment of The Regency Vows series, I think Emily's story is my favorite. Surprisingly, this romance novel begins with a marriage, which is often what the reader works up to in a love story. However, Emily and Julian's marriage is one born out of convenience. From this point, the story's trajectory takes on not only a note of love slowly building under the surface, but also one of self-acceptance. I was drawn to Emily's story because she seems to be caught in the never-ending cycle of people-pleasing, and suddenly breaks free from the chains of society once she is married. Although we do not live in times when marriage is the only goal of "society ladies", I feel that people of today constantly look for the approval of others, whether it be via social media, what they are wearing, and even where they go on vacation. All needs to be recorded, and in a fashionable way, or else it never happened (or never mattered). Emily's story reminded me that the need to please others can leave one's self deeply neglected, and when we take care to project our true selves, true love and friendship will prevail because they will accept us for who we truly are and not who we pretend to be. I would recommend not only this book, but the entire series to anyone!
I have really loved this series and this latest installment was no exception! The subversion of Regency tropes, chance to see old characters, and relationship between Emily and Julian all made for a wonderful read. I'm not sure if I just missed it, but it didn't seem like there was a lot of tension or buildup toward the eventual conflict and resolution - in my reading it just kind of happened out of nowhere. But, it was still an enjoyable read!
Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for providing an eARC of this title in exchange for an honest review!
Something I've noticed (and really appreciate!) about Martha Waters' third book To Marry and to Meddle is just how good her writing has gotten over the course of her career so far. Her banter between characters is great, and I love how Waters' work always messes with deeply entrenched historical romance tropes every time. Plus, Emily and Julian are so sweet!
Martha Waters is also definitely becoming an author I quickly recommend to people who are new to historicals — her characters are fun, her plots are breezy, and her dialogue is smooth like butter. Good stuff.
Content warning: Manipulative parents, family estrangement
So freaking cute! I really love this series and this latest entry is no exception; it was great to see Lady Emily be herself and watch them fall in love. This wasn’t as sharp witted as book 1 or as crazy as book 2, but I find I like it the most. Perhaps because Lady Emily wasn’t quite as shrew-ish and they didn’t have to go through crazy games. Can’t wait to read the next instalment!
I absolutely adored this book! The main characters are loveable and their marriage of convenience is so sweet. I loved learning a bit more about the theater world...even if it was only loosely based on history ;)
I love a historical romance where the couple starts out married asap. I probably like it because it's so different from how a lot of marrriages work nowadays, but I also feel like there is so much room to grow between two characters thrust into a new relationship.
Emily and Julian truly live up to their hype. Julian wants a society wife who can weather storms while he tries to turn his theater into a respectable establishment, but Emily wants to be involved in the day to day and there the conflict is born.
I've really enjoyed this series and if you haven't read any of them, don't worry, you don't need to read the previous books to enjoy Emily and Julian's story.
I really enjoyed this book. This was my first book by this author and I look forward to her next one. I loved he characters and how they took control of their own destiny.
All the sass and wit you’ve come to expect from Martha Waters, and this one is no exception. Lady Emily agrees to a marriage of convenience with Lord Julian - him promising to pay off her father’s debts and her promising to bring in respectable customers to his theater. When real feelings start to enter the picture, their marriage of convenience becomes not so convenient after all. I really enjoyed this story. I like that they were both up front about not marrying for love but then ultimately they learned to love each other for exactly who they were. Thank you Netgalley and Atria for the egalley in exchange for my honest review.
To Marry and to Meddle is book three in this series by Martha Waters featuring friends who each find true love: one with her estranged husband, one with an old friend, and in this book, one with a man with a questionable reputation. Our heroine puts her independence and future in the hands of the handsome theater owner so that she can avoid being forced to marry the man to whom her father is in debt. Will this marriage help mend some family troubles? Will they find love in their marriage of convenience? Enjoy this HEA tale of beautiful people in a Regency setting.
I struggled with this third installment of the Regency Vows series. I think for me there was just a lack of drama and substance. The marriage of convenience trope demands that there is tension, and while I thought the chemistry between Emily and Julian was well written, it was hard to get into Julian's stubbornness as the main form of tension between our leading man and leading lady. I love Martha Waters' humor, so it was still an enjoyable read, I just wasn't super invested the way I can be when reading her books. A good choice if you enjoy marriage of convenience, you loved the other Regency Vows books, or have a soft spot for the theater.
I’m a huge fan of The Regency Vows series and have been waiting for Emily and Julian’s book ever since they first were introduced. I always knew they’d end up together and seemed enamored with each other, so this was the book I was looking forward to most.
It didn’t quite live up to my expectations but it was was still a very good book. I actually enjoyed that we start the book off with them getting married, but the whole “we aren’t in love, this is a marriage of convenience” thread throughout the entire book got tiring. It’s been obvious since the previous books that these two were absolutely crazy for one another, so this got a bit frustrating. I love Emily and Julian as people and wish they would have been a bit more present with each other throughout the book and less in their heads.
I do love that there was a huge focus on Emily coming into her own as a confident woman—not under anyone’s control, and that Julian fully stoked that flame. All in all, I give this one a 3.5/5 stars!
Will update with IG and blog posts closer to release date!
This was a cute, easy read. I liked both of the characters, thought the book was pretty well paced, and appreciated that the book didn't resort to petty misunderstandings for conflict. I would have liked more steam, but what was there was well-written and fun.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
This was my last read of 2021, and I am very glad that it was. I previously read To Love and To Loathe by Waters, and was very excited to see this book pop into my inbox. I loved Emily and Julian in TLaTL, and was ready to read their story.
Waters writes such fun and dynamic characters, and you could tell that each character is well-rounded and three dimensional. I appreciated that while there was a third act conflict, it was much more developed and it made sense with the plot, rather than it coming out of nowhere like in some other books.
If you're looking for a quick, fun, Regency-era romance, I highly recommend picking this one up!
I’ve enjoyed Martha Waters’ first two Regency romances, and To Marry and to Meddle was no different. In fact, these books get better and better! Reading about Julian Belfry and Emily Turner was the perfect escape this holiday season, and it was nice to have characters from the first two books play a part in this one. If you are looking for a fun, clean historical romance, look no further than this series. Looking forward to the next!
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A Regency romance set in London is the latest novel by Martha Waters. To Marry and to Meddle was inspired briefly by a historic accounting of a mother who tried to use her daughter to influence a man of power. Full of amusing social situations, this book is an absolute cotton candy delight of a romance.
Another enjoyable regency romp with Martha Waters! This series is truly delightful and keeps getting better.

CW: family tensions, death of a family member (past and not on page)
This is the third book in the series, but they are all interconnected standalones. They can be read out of order but mild spoilers for the past books.
I would recommend if you're looking for (SPOILERS)
-m/f historical romance
-marriage of convenience
-idiots to lovers
-insta attraction
-close-proximity
-the wedding night from hell
-an adorable and cockblocking cat
-great banter
I adored this book. Martha Waters writes such wonderful banter. This book was low angst, battery and just fun. Two people who took an opportunity to finally live their lives for themselves, and also do it with the person they were accidentally falling for, their spouse. I loved the relationship, how both characters were like what is this thing in my chest?
Give me all of the cute pets, standing up for your person to your terrible parents, and wonderful side characters. A low angst, low steam, wonderful read. I couldn't put it down and can't wait to see who the next couple is in the series.
