I enjoyed getting lost in the world of Crumbs…
A YA graphic novel reminiscent of a Studio Ghibli adventure, with enticing movement filled illustrations was a pleasure to read.
I absolutely adored the Wobble phone spirits and their whimsical fairy like nature. The characters are fun loving and well developed. Once you get started you feel as if you are sitting at Marigold’s Bakery watching the story of Ray, a coming-of-age seer, and Laurie, a budding musician, get to know themselves by getting to know each other.
One of the best lines in the stories explains how a seer – sees the past/present/future and it states: “what they really see are possibilities”. In this tale, the reader follows the ins and outs of a young couple searching for the possibilities in their life.
What a great escape!!
Grateful to have received a digital copy of this book from NetGalley & Clarion Books
Thank you to NetGallery, and HCC for the eArc! I absolutely loved this one - and it is on my wish list to be purchased when I can!
Crumbs is not what I expected, and that is a great thing. It is such a cute story that went in ways I didn't think would, it did have more melancholy than I expected, and I assumed it would be a bit more queer, but honestly, Danie Stirling is a fantastic author, and I want more from this story. It is absolutely amazing. I really loved the talk of how it's okay to not be okay, and that you don't need to be happy in front of your loved ones constantly and ensure that they are happy, and if they are not, "fix" them. I really enjoyed Ray and Laurie, and how they went for their dreams, and neither of them stopped each other.
I really enjoyed how Ray was such a brilliant person, and even in this magical world where your "driving license" is actually your "flying license" and how your friends can be witches or werewolves, there was still normalcy that related to our world and their universe.
Overall, a great read, and I just have to decide whether I should get the hardcover or the paperback haha.
Crumbs by Danie Stirling is a light fantasy novel about a young woman named Ray who is coming into her own and determining the best use of her magical powers. A seer with unique abilities, Ray has dreamed of joining the elite Council, especially when she begins interning there. But she wonders what the future can truly hold when she falls for a musician who works at the cafe Ray frequents. I thought that Crumbs was an adorable, cozy, and charming graphic novel, perfect for romance fans. The fantasy elements were light, but I thought Stirling did a great job building the world with magic and whimsy. It was a rather long book, but I was excited to keep reading and never felt like it was too much. I'm excited to read more from this author!
💭My review🐻
This was a very cute graphic novel, a very slow-paced read. It made me feel nice and cozy. It was a nice and sweet read. The graphics were beautiful and so cute. I really enjoyed this read. I really like all the characters. I also wish there was more backstory on the magic they use. Hope this story keeps going on WEBTOON, I love that a lot of series on there are getting books.
A big thank you to NetGalley and @harpercollinsca @hccfrenzy for giving me the chance to read and review this adorable book.
Thank you HCC for the eARC! Omg this is such a lovely story. I’m hooked. I love the main character. The worldbuilding is so fascinating with how their magic system is set up. I love Marigold and the concept of her bakery. She is such a badass character for going after her dreams and leaving behind that high-power position. Ray and Laurie were just so cute together. I like how honest Sian was about her and Laurie because there was the potential for lots of drama, but the author kept the story nice and sweet. This book also does a great job talking about how it’s ok not to be ok all the time and how you don’t have to try “fixing” people when they are sad or have problems. I thought the way this graphic novel ended was beautiful and realistic. Also, the phone spirits were the cutest! The part at the very end of the book with the phones was just so precious and such a nice detail to add. This book is just so heartwarming overall. Loved it!
4.5/5 Stars
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an e-ARC of this book.
I really liked this story. It was well done, showing the complexity of relationships and the value in communication. It had a nice, slightly bittersweet ending, but overall, the story was very enjoyable. I would highly recommend adding this to library collections for teens.
I originally started reading this series on Webtoon and I really enjoyed it so I couldn't wait to read my ARC copy. Something I love the most about this graphic novel is the artwork! The illustrations are beautiful and very eye catching. I spent time admiring not only the characters, but the settings and background as well. You could tell that each element was done with a lot of care. Plus the colours! So pretty! The plot is mainly focused on the romance, and I thought Ray and Laurie were really cute together! Their relationship was believable and it felt realistic in that they had things they needed to work on. I do wish though that we could've explored the magic system a bit more, especially the bakery since that was one of my favourite aspects of the world. Something I also enjoyed was the main message of putting yourself first. We see Ray grow a lot in terms of her relationships with her family and friends which was great to see.
Overall I had a great time reading Crumbs!
4.5/5
Crumbs is about 2 people who end up in each other’s lives when their personal lives are going through big change and decisions. Ray is a rare seer that can see the present with dreams to become part of the council and Laurie is an aspiring musician and searching for his big break. Meanwhile they’re trying to figure out their relationship as well as their future. Ultimately they must make a decision that will hopefully bring them both some joy.
Cute on cute on cute!!! Adorable! Can you tell I enjoyed this? Cause I did.
Originally Crumbs was a webtoon which I think is amazing that webtoons are pushing their way into more mainstream culture like actual published physical books. Amazing!
I thought the emotional depth was pretty good as well as the character development in our two main characters. I also liked the character design and the world building!!! The world building was amazing! I love their communication devices and the small details Danie Stirling sprinkled throughout each panel.
The only reason I’m taking half a star away is because the art is in this almost crayon-type style while the typesetting and font is very sharp(?) and I just felt that it could’ve been designed to blend in better with the art. But that’s just me.
Anyway I now have a craving to read 100 webtoons and I’m very excited to read more of Stirling’s works.
Thank you NetGalley and Clarion Books for the digital ARC for 'Crumbs' by Danie Stirling (aka Whitherling).
I'll admit, this isn't the first time I've read this... but, I've never read it all in one go before. I was so excited when I first downloaded, and scrolled down to the beginning of Chapter 1. Some of the panels are definitely different in setup, but it's still the same adorable, and heartwarming story. I fell in love all over again with Ray and Laurie, and was reminded about some important personal lessons along the way.
In 2018/2019 'Crumbs' first existed as Canvas on Webtoons, before being moved to Originals in 2019/2020. I used to have to impatiently wait for my weekly releases, but in 2 months I'll be able to have my own physical copy! 5/5.
Note: This is also something I want to add to my classroom. I have so many students who read Webtoons on their phones during the day, and will read any graphic novel I add to the classroom! This would be the perfect addition.
Thanks To netgalley for the arc, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book was adorable. My favourite part had to be the artwork, it was just so pretty, and also eye catching. and the colours tied it together making it look amazing!
Now the main focus of this book was the romance. I'm not normally a fan of romance, but here it was well done. It felt very realistic in a way.
My only complaint about this book was the magic system. It looked really cool, but we never really dove deep into it, or how it worked.
I give 'Crumbs' an 8/10
Super cute YA graphic novel. I do wish there had been more explanation about the Council and how magic worked in this world.
Crumbs is a sweet coming of age story, filled with yummy looking bakery treats! Ray and Laurie are adorable and I enjoyed watching their love story blossom.
This graphic novel was an easy and quick read that made me feel buttery warm inside!
Thank you NetGalley and Clarion Books for the advanced copy!
This was really cute. A very low stakes, beautifully illustrated story about first love, learning to put yourself first, and choosing to listen to your instincts. Middle grade/young YA appropriate.
This was beautiful, magical, spectacular and perfect.
I loved every second of this story and the characters! I was smiling like a fool throughout and it was just such an enjoyable reading experience. Following Ray, a seeer with a gift unlike anyone elses and Laurie, a barista with a dream of becoming a famous musician.
The art style was adorable, the characters were relatable and this was all around everything and more I wanted from this story.
This graphic novel was heartwarming and delightful. I immediately fell in love with the characters (even the phones). Ray and Laurie are realistic and adorable. Even the ensemble cast of friends are corky and lovable. Danie Stirling has created a magical world of enchanted pastries and a storyline where the reader roots for everyone to find their happy endings. Absolutely loved this book! I can’t wait to book talk it to students.
3 stars! Thank you Netgalley for the arc. This book had a blend of magic and scifi that was fun and different. The main characters' romance was very cute. My favorite parts were the bakery bits and I wish there was more! I would love another book that focused on the bakery itself.
This was such a cute coming of age story. Ray is trying to find herself and learn her magic, along with falling in love for the first time. Such a sweet story, I will definitely be recommending this one to magic, romance and graphic novel fans!
Thank you NetGalley and Clarion Books for a free eARC in exchange for my honest review.
'Crumbs' is a lovely little cinnamon roll of a graphic novel! Danie Stirling mixes magic and baking with coming of age themes as our central protagonists, Ray and Laurie, face key life decisions--all while falling in love. The art is absolutely adorable, and the world utterly intriguing... I actually wish the plot had involved a little more explanation/development of the world, rather than being so single-mindedly focused on character development arcs (and that is probably the first and only time I have ever stated such sacrilege).
That said, because the plot was essentially one of self-exploration and ultimately decision-making, it felt a little slow at points. Like, there could have been more action? Maybe key events/conflicts that further contributed to and exemplified the internal battles of Ray and Laurie? Regardless, I did care about the characters and their personal journeys through the story and I thought the ending was 'just' right. 4 Stars!
I’ve tried and tried but unfortunately I just can’t find a way to read this! It won’t download properly, which is a shame as I really wanted to read this one.
This was cute and the art is an easy 10/10 but the ending left a lot to be desired. Also I feel strongly that all graphic novels should be gay?
