I love superheroes, and am always down for a superhero romance. This is a fun POV of a non-powered person dating a superhero, and is a really fun take. I might be a bit old for the YA target audience for this one, but still it's a fun read.
I love superhero books and this certainly was a fun superhero read. I wish there were more books like this.
I really enjoyed this novel! The relationship between Astrid and Max was so adorable, and I read this book so fast! 4.5/5 stars for me! <3
How to Date a Superhero (And Not Die Trying) is the debut novel from Cristina Fernandez. This YA novel provided relationships throughout. You had Astrid, a typical overachiever in college majoring in pre-med. But, wait! She has been dating Max since high school and they truly compliment each other. She is constantly scheduling everything to have her life under control. Max, well he is a superhero and sporadically running off to save the world. Between the two you have the dynamics of college relationships and young friendships that carry over into your life.
It was exciting and I enjoyed the relationship side of dating a superhero - a point of view not often explored. I will recommend this YA book to my students that are wanting an enjoyable young love read. I'm hoping there will be another Max & Astrid story to continue on to explore the balance of schedules, love, and life.
Thank you to NetGalley, Katherine Tegan Books, and Cristina Fernandez for the ARC.
I really loved the idea of this, and that there were some references to superhero media that were very fun but boy this was a slog for me. The time jumps were super weird and confusing, and I didn't feel like Astrid and Max had much in the way of chemistry.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for giving me free access to the advanced copy of this book to read.
How to Date a Superhero (And Not Die Trying) was witty and entertaining. I'm not usually one for YA novels but the title drew me in and it didn't disappoint. Like many YA books, I was taken back to my own high school experiences and couldn't help but feel the same emotions as the MC throughout. It was a quick read full of chuckles. Enjoy!
This is a good romp that is perhaps not for everyone, but I’m one of those lucky few who it is for.
This is about Astrid. She has a superpower where she always knows the time. She super anxiety-driven, and her schedules are off the charts. She has a best friend who she lives with—David—who I really enjoyed. And she has a boyfriend—Max—who is a superhero.
Astrid is pre-med, so she’s super busy. So, when she is enrolled into basically a survival course for the partners of superheros, she just doesn’t have the time.
This is funny and gets into the mind of someone with anxiety well. That said, I’m not sure who the intended audience is.
DNFing for now. I really enjoyed the start of this, and I think teens would really like the concept, but I struggled to piece together the timeline and felt like I had no idea what was going on, despite the MC’s many schedules.
Definitely has potential (hence the 3 stars), and I DO want to come back to it. Just possibly when my brain is less tired and is better at pretending it’s a teenager again.
My Thoughts: How To Date A Supherhero is a cute, young adult romcom set in a world of superheroes. Pre-med student Astrid lives by schedules and her sweet boyfriend Max can’t seem to keep to her plans, until Astrid finds out Max Martin is actually…a superhero! Full of humor, a sweet romance, & dripping with sweetness.
This just was not for me
I liked this take on the superhero genre. We don't often get to see things from the bystanders perspective, which I found refreshing. I liked that the book touched on post traumatic stress and was more than just a teen rom-com romp.
This book was incredibly cheesy and just not my cup of tea. I almost DNF’ed around 70% but I stuck it out.
I struggle with YA as is, and I knew I’d struggle with a Type A protagonist—I was right. Max was adorable but ultimately characters fell flat because their “flaws” are their strengths. Max is unquestionably good. He’s sweet, and silly, and I love him, but he’s essentially taken all the lovability between the two protagonists, leaving Astrid with very little.
I liked the characters a lot though I wish some of the dude characters had more back story/explanations. I enjoyed the plot but felt the pacing could have been a bit better. For example, the climax scene was resolved very quickly while some of Astrid’s homework scenes were longer. The mystery element was both predictable and acceptable. The addition of a training center and support group of sorts for those dating superheroes is a creative and unique touch. Overall, it was pretty good.
This was a fun read thinking about the other half: a superhero's partner. I really liked the characters and I was rooting for them the whole way through.
Fans of C.B. Lee's Sidekick squad will enjoy this romantic comedy. There is a nice blending of science fiction and the pains of young adulthood.
I love a good superhero story and I love a romance - what a fun twist of the two! (I particularly appreciated that the ROMANCE took a backseat in the story.) Told from Astrid's perspective (NOT the superheroes, so fun twist) we get to see the danger of dating a superhero as she finds her life turned upside down (and then some) when her boyfriend turns out to be more than another college student.
Fast paced and told in alternating flashback/present day sequences, this was just a nice escape and one that I will likely buy to keep on my shelf.
This book was so cute! Not as much world-building as you would think, so you need to suspend your disbelief to get into the story. I really liked how the main couple chose each other over and over and how they described what being with their partner feels like. It felt really true for a book about superheroes.
I loved this book. Because YA novels are typically set in high schools, I love that this one was in a college setting. I enjoyed that the romance was not the main aspect of the book and my marvel loving heart had so much fun reading this, now I want my own copy.
I loved reading this story and all their characters. The superhero’s were all enjoyable and I loved the ups and downs.
