The book benefits form the unusual situation the protagonist finds herself in - a detective returning to work after mat leave = married to an ex-gangster..
The story is gripping from page one where a baby is kidnapped. The author draws the reader in with clever plotting and well drawn characters.
Thank you to Joffe Books, NetGalley and the author for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.Last Victim by Helen H. Durrant is the fifth instalment in the DCI Rachel King series but reads relatively well as a stand-alone.Too many characters, lead to storylines which were more confusing than useful.
A Good addition to the DCI Rachel King series. A little bit of a slow start but then lots of twists and turns and left on a massive cliffhanger!
I thoroughly enjoy this authors books whichever series it is. This latest in Detective Rachel King series is no exception. A clever gripping plot starts of with the abduction of a baby. Obviously I was hooked as to how this would evolve.. I certainly wasn't disappointed with the thrilling turn of events
Absolutely amazing read, it had me from the first page! I would definitely recommend this to my friends & family! The cover is also incredibly eye catching
Good story, well written, part of a series, nothing amazing - my opinion only ! This was just wasn't for me.
Fifth in this series featuring Detective Rachel King and she's back from maternity leave with a bang. Fast paced and exciting with plenty of twists.A good read.
This is the fifth book in the series featuring Detective Rachel King. It is Rachel’s first day back at work after being on maternity leave. She had a baby boy with Jed who is now a property developer but once was was a member of the Manchester gangland. Rachel is asked to investigate the kidnapping of a baby boy who was left with a baby sitter and both have disappeared. Alarm bells start to ring when she discovers that the baby’s father is Scott Agnew. He is one of the Trio, a Manchester drug dealing team run by him, Scott Hutton and Brendan Blackmore. Then Hutton’s elderly mother is kidnapped from her care home and the pressure is on for Rachel to discover who is planning to take over from the Trio especially as the prime suspect appears to be Jed. Rachel knows that Jed has been acting strange lately and mysteriously disappearing but is convinced that he hasn’t reverted back to his old ways. This is a good series with believable characters, a good storyline and plenty of twists and turns. I look forward to the next book in this series.
Thanks to Netgalley and Joffe Books for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
I’m a fan of this author and enjoyed this one. A child is missing and then a mother disappears from her care home and then a husband is missing. They are all connected as being part of the Trio in charge of the drugs and crime crime in Manchester.
Rachel’s return to work may be comprised by the Trio’s involvement because Jed used to run this syndicate. Well worth a read.
Last Victim is book number 5 in this series and they keep getting better and better! A kidnapping, the mob, drugs and more kidnappings! You have to read to find out what happens next!
A big thank you to NetGalley and Jaffe Books for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is the 5th in the series. I have not read them all. There are alot of people to remember so it might be in your best interest to read them in order. That being said-I did ok but sometimes had to reread a part to make sure I got the people correct. I enjoyed the book-but it did make me sad. It's tough juggling work, new baby and new partner. It's set in the UK so that was different for me. 4 stars
DCI Rachel King is returning back form maternity leave and is called to a situation where a 2 month old baby has been kidnapped by the babysitter. Then an elderly lady is taken from a care home. The link is a local gang called the Trio, one of the gang himself goes missing. Rachel’s partner, ex-gang boos, Jed then becomes a suspect. Rachel needs to find the missing people and who is behind this urgently.
This is the first Rachel King book I have read, but didn’t feel I have missed too much by starting mid-series. An enjoyable read with an interesting plot, the ending was a little disappointing, personally.
Another great addition to the Rachel King series of books from Helen H Durrant. I was really rooting for Rachel to be happy and settled with Jed after the turmoil of the last few books. A good storyline (with some familiar faces) set after Rachel’s return from maternity leave. A great read.
Last Victim by Helen H. Durrant is the fifth book in the DCI Rachel King series which is set in and around the city of Manchester. I have enjoyed all the other four books with in this series. Once I start to read Helen's book I find them hard to out down. This new book is full of twists and turns, with great red herrings throughout.
I highly recommend this series of books. I have really enjoyed these.
Big thank you to NetGalley, Joffe Books and the author Helen H Durrant for my ARC of Last Victim in exchange for an honest review.
My first Rachel King book - didn't impact on enjoyment, though there is a series if you'd prefer to read it one by one. This is a page turner, child abduction. Interesting book, with plenty of twists and turns. Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
A police investigation into the murders of people involved in the homeless and drugs underworld in Manchester. Not a long book, but plenty of action and twists and turns along the way.
Rachel is just starting work again after maternity leave and is juggling her work with childcare and her partner, who is not always around when he should be. He has a criminal past and Rachel is scared that he is involved with the crimes. There are lots of characters in this book, most are well described. I thought it was a great read , believable and interesting . There are a couple of times where the evidence seems to lead to a different suspect, but it works out in tge end.
This is one of a series, though I have not read otgers by this author and felt that it worked well as a stand alone
Thank you to Net Galley for tge ARC in exchange for an honest review
A nightmare for any parent, the kidnapping of your young baby. Certainly not the case that Rachel King would want to have on her return to work after maternity leave and the links to organised crime are a little too close to home.
Soon Rachel has more than enough to keep her and the reader busy in this crime mystery. I think I would have preferred to have read the previous books to get the full background story of the various characters but this book does fill in the relevant details where needed.
This book is 5th in the Rachel King series but it could quite easily be read as a standalone. Rachel is called upon to investigate a child abduction, technically she is still on maternity leave until the following day but it's something she can't ignore. This is just the start of events that lead to the underworld and a trio of gangland bosses who were once arch rivals of Rachel's partner Jed. Even Rachel starts to have fears that he may be involved.. Helen H. Durrant is an author that I have followed for years and I'm never disappointed in her books and this is no exception, I loved it.
I was hooked from page one, very addictive, page turning. Addictive crime mystery. Rachel maternity leave is over and she is called onto a kidnapping case if a baby. There are plenty of twists & turns. I will now read more books from
This series. I love crime books too.
Another winner for Helen in the Detective Rachel King series. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and coudn't put it down, kept me engrossed from first to last page! Involves the kidnap of a baby boy, followed by the taking of an elderly lady from a care home and keeps one enthralled thereafter. I would recommend this book and the earlier ones (should be read first) to anyone who loves a good murder mystery!
