The storyline in this one is a little random in my opinion, but I am also picky when it comes to something that is realistic. Easy to follow and quick to get through. The story is not super clean from a romance perspective, but I always flip thought all of that and move forward. It is always fun to see where the love will begin and what will happen from it. You will enjoy this easy read filled with twists and turns and of course, a happy ending!
A cowboy sheriff? Yep, I’m there, and Zack did not disappoint! The eldest of the Kittredge clan, he carries some prominent scars of his childhood on his soul, so much so, he walked away from the ranch. Not his family, he still loves to meddle (and they with him) and be there for them, just away from his father. Reasons are slowly revealed over time and are heartbreaking, as his parents’ lives are finally explained. Janie grew up with everything but always found she was missing a piece. That was filled the moment she and Zack encountered each other. There two seemingly opposite people connect on a soulful level, giving the other what they didn’t realize they were missing. Strong, stubborn, determined, define them both, but underneath it all, there is a level of empathy that runs deep and true. Zack and Janie work with each other, it is doubtful either could work with anyone else. They have to do some soul searching within themselves to let themselves be happy, before they can be together, and it makes their HEA all the more poignant because of it <3
Loved it. Just as I did all of the other books I’m this series. Super cute summer romance. Highly recommend. Read it in a day!
I found this to be the deepest and most insightful of the Kittredge Family series. And it's always fun to catch up with familiar characters.
Three and a half stars.
Janie is a live-in geriatric nurse looking after a sprightly eighty-something year old widow called Damaris Gardiner in her big old house in Cold River. Janie has been resolutely friend-zoned by almost every man she's ever met and thinks of herself as an adult Pippi Longstocking, so it's a bit of a shock that the local sheriff Zack Kittredge thinks she's a femme fatale up to no good. Janie thinks she should be outraged at being judged so harshly, but actually she's thrilled that a woman wearing no make-up and sensible slacks with flat shoes could even be considered one iota dangerous.
Zack has always held himself and others to a high standard, when he was eighteen years old he left the family ranch and moved into his own home, leaving his inheritance for a job in law-enforcement. Ever since then there has been a coldness between Zack and his father Donovan, but that doesn't stop Zack from regularly going out to the ranch for Sunday lunch with his family, because that's what an honourable man does. When this flame-haired temptress with the bewitching freckles moves in with his elderly neighbour he's highly suspicious, especially since he can tell she's lying about something. Zack doesn't do relationships, even his flings are far away from Cold River and they are more like business arrangements with women who know the score. Yet every time he tries to shut down his feelings about Janie they just get bigger and messier.
This feels like the end of the Kittredge family saga. We finally discover what has kept Donovan and Zack at loggerheads for so many years, and Zack finally takes that stick out of his butt. TBH I don't think anyone comes out of this well, but that's just my opinion.
I had been waiting impatiently for Zack's book, but as is often the way the great unveiling of the secret was a bit of a damp squib. Also, I've come to the conclusion that writing a series of books about brooding cowboys from the same family just means the family seems highly dysfunctional and in need of family therapy. Even the reasons behind Zack's mother's behaviour sound frankly like some kind of psychological warfare rather than the actions of a rational mature adult.
An enjoyable end (I think) to the series, perhaps those no-good Hills will be the focus of the next series? But didn't quite hit the highs I was hoping for. Closer to my feelings for the second book rather than the emotion-fest of the first book.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
I’ve loved every book in this series. I was looking forward to reading about Zak’s story because he’s so uptight and I wasn’t disappointed. You get to learn about what happened in the past with his mom and dad. His love interest is funny, kind and perfect for him. I truly enjoyed the book.
The good storyline and well defined characters captured my attention from the very beginning and I didn't stop turning the pages until the very last page!
Fun from the first few lines! I haven’t read another book that quite makes fighting a way of flirting the way that this one does. Such a great premise and the perfect reason to visit Cold River again!
I requested to read and review this book for free from St. Martin Publishing Company. This book has drama, mystery, romance and so much more. You will meet the Kittredge family clan. You will find out their quirks and what .asked them work and they to find out their family secrets. Janie will try to find her self in a new town. Can family be what you make it or by blood. Can it be both? Can a person just be nervous around law enforcement or does it mean they are hiding something from them? This for a mature reader and can be read anywhere.
An entertaining read featuring two interesting, intriguing characters, “Summer Nights with a Cowboy”, by Caitlin Crews (St. Martin’s Paperbacks), is a story full of passion, sexual tension, secrets and even suspense, surrounding the leads’ families and Cold River history.
Zack is such an intense hero, all that sternness, hardness and loneliness mixed together and then crumbling down when a clumsy heroine intervenes and slowly deconstructs his walls.
There’s an innocence and authenticity about Janie that is very refreshing and appealing. She’s a truly genuine person and her generosity and compassion are remarkable.
I really liked the suspense about each lead’s family issues and backgrounds. Zack’s stoicism becomes a bit unjustified when secrets are unveiled (and I felt he loses a bit of charisma in the process; he also becomes a bit sappy in the end).
Caitlin Crews really knows how to write about passion, intensity, strong emotions and sexual tension and steam, and the book doesn’t disappoint in those aspects. A very satisfying read!
I'm conflicted about Summer Nights with a Cowboy because I enjoyed it but it could have been so much more. First off, I'll start by saying that I've read most of Caitlin Crews books - from harlequin presents, dare to the cowboy romances she's been writing with St.Martin's for a while now. And by saying that, I hope to convey that I kind of know what I'm in for when I pick up a Caitlin Crews novel - mostly. The writing style has somewhat changed over the years (the internal monologues have diminished a bit, thankfully, though sometimes not enough) but I almost always enjoy her stories. However, my problems with Summer Nights with a Cowboy can be summarized in two points that are not problems I find with Crews's books usually.
First and foremost, the lack of heat in this novel is beyond disappointing. It's basically a fade-to-black romance - it's DRY. And it detracts from what could have been a very intense novel, which would have easily made it a 5-star read. Now, I don't know why that is. I don't know if it was the writer's decision or if it it's the nature of St. Martin's' published romances that aren't under the RomCom/Contemporary Romance/Trade Published umbrella. I will say that *I* hate romance novels where the characters' intimate relationship is fade-to-black or not shown in some detail. And I consider myself quite a bit more forgiving of lackluster steam than most (I've seen some instagrammers flat out dismiss books like this, and I don't blame them). If St.Martin's hopes to get ahold of and then maintain longtime readers as well as the tiktokers and instagramers who will rate the "spiciness" of a book and who go looking for the spiciest reads, as a 27-year-old (or as a "young millennial") longtime romance reader, I'd encourage them to lean into the steam - so to speak. What I read in Summer Nights with a Cowboy, in terms of intimate scenes, is not it! Not it at all. And it's not what I've come to expect from a Crews romance, which indicates kind of a break of expectation from an author I've been a loyal reader to since the early 2010s.
The second thing is that this book veered way too close to a women's fiction novel at times and I, personally, hate women's fiction.
I cannot, in good conscience, give this book more than 2.5 stars. Not because I didn't like it. I did. But nothing irritates me more than wasted potential and this book had loads of it. Both characters were interesting and endearing in their own way. It's an emotional story. But nothing makes up for the intensity it missed out on (directly because of the fade-to-black thing) and the strong women's fiction vibes. I'm rounding up to 3 stars because I'm feeling generous, but that's it. I'm disappointed.
I received this ARC for an honest review. This story is about Janie and Zack. Janie is an at home nurse who is helping Damaris who is a neighbor of Zack’s. Zack considers himself as a lone wolf. People around him sees him ridged or stuffy. Zack left the ranch to become Sheriff of Cold River which caused conflict within the Kittredge family especially between Zack and his father. Janie took the job helping Damaris because she was told her father could possibly be in Cold River. I don’t want to tell you too much of the story because I want you to read it.
Caitlin Crews does a great job in wrapping the series with this book. You learn what happened that started the conflict within the family, and she does a great job in getting you to understand everyone’s point of view.
I will definitely read another series by Caitlin Crews.
I struggled with this one. I almost didn't finish this story as I didn't care for the MC's. Zach was a self righteous prig. Janie's self reflection for the majority of the book was about her lust for Zack. The family conflict was weird, and totally preventable from all three parties involved, and honestly had me questioning the claim to family love and loyalty. I did finish to the end, more so to see how Zach would be redeemed, rather than being vested in the romance. Overall, an OK story. * I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley and this is my voluntary and honest review.
Back to the Kittredge Ranch with Caitlin Crews in Summer Nights with a Cowboy EEK!!
While I was excited to get back to the Kittredges and especially Sheriff Zach, Janie Atwood stole the show. She was a down to earth, wholesome, fun loving nurse with a secret and "I don't trust her" says the Sheriff of the clumsy beauty new to town
While I loved this book and I live this series, getting to the bottom of the
Kittredge family drama was a great resolution! This was a great read, well written, and very entertaining.
I loved Zach and Janie together!!
Small town romance is no hardship to read.
Zack is a no-nonsense kind of guy. Janie is the most likeable heroin ever written. When these two come together you'll end up laughing, a little suspicious, and down right swooning.
I found this book to be just a tad slow and confusing to start but absolutely gained momentum. Would recommend reading in order.
All in all, a great addition to the Kittredge Ranch Family.
Summer nights with a cowboy
Janie’s mother dies in childbirth, brought up by her Grandparents she never knew who her father was but her Grandmother left a letter saying her mother had been living in Cold Rock before she returned home pregnant.
Janie takes a job to nurse an elderly resident of Cold Rick with the intention of also looking into whom her father may be.
Sheriff Zack Kitteredge a taciturn loner is suspicious of Janie and tells her so, Janies sense of humour shines through and the dialogue between the two is pretty sparky and she more or less falls in love at first sight with Zack.
For Zack the last thing he wants is a relationship and he can’t understand the feelings he developing for her.
Gradually they start a relationship and under Janies influence Zack realises he needs to change from being a loner.
A nice romance, no great dramas. A good read but not a great one.
My thanks to net galley and publisher for the opportunity to review this book honestly.
Rating 3.75
Love Caitlin Crews books and this one was enjoyable and fun.
Zack is the towns Sherif. He comes from a ranching family and has decided to step back from helping running the ranch because of conflict with his father. The Kittredge family have a lot of baggage to rutter through. Zack in known as a more "serious" and stoic individual by friends and family. But really it would take a special lady to get past that wall to the heart of the man and Janie was it.
Janie is a nurse and came to town to live with and care for a Damaris, an elderly, sweet lady that needed assistance. Oh and she was also Zack's neighbor. Janie made the move to the small town after her grandparent died. Before they had died they imparted some critical information about her ancestry who were located in that particular town. Janie wanted some answers about her mother and her father who she never knew or met.
Zack is spacious of Janie and knows that she's here not just to nurse Damaris (Janie hasn't told anyone that she might have relatives in that town). There first meeting was a hoot, just makes you love Janie.
Janie is a sweet and strong woman wanting answers about her Mom and possible relatives. She just needs some closer. She is quirky, funny and has a heart of gold. I absolutely loved how she melted Zack's heart. He just couldn't resist.
The story entails the journey of Janie's family and finding her roots. Zack's relationship with his father and mother and some preconceived ideas he has of something he witnessed when he was younger. The relationship they build as they open up and share who they are and what each is fearful of and dealing with. They become friends and then it evolves into so much more. As they find answers and true love.
This is a more sweet and funny romance, less angst than normal for this author. I enjoyed the change and really found a lot of heart and emotion in this love story. The secondary characters are just a likable as the main ones too.
My main issue is I struggled in the beginning of the story. It was slow and found it hard to keep track of where the story or plot was going. But about quarter of the way through the story it picked up and became more enjoyable.
I love the small town "world" that Caitlin Crews creates. Her descriptions of the town life and characters truly are a joy to read.
The story of Janie and Zack
Janie is new in town, and Sheriff Zack is wary of her and thinks she has an ulterior motive for being in town.
will Zack be able to change his loner ways for a chance for Janie.
A great read, looking forward to more books in this series.
I received an arc from NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
If you are looking for an opposites attract book this one is for you. The stubborn and somewhat ornery Sheriff meets the sweet nurse to the elderly. She basically trips onto him and the attraction begins.
The Sheriff however thinks she is up to no good and trouble but as they get to know one another attraction prevails.
Summer Nights with a Cowboy by C. Crews, published by St. Martin's Press, is book three in the Kittredge Ranch series. For best reading experience I recommend to read the books in order.
Janie Atwood is a bit clumsy and works a slive-in-nurse in a small town. The local Sheriff has his sights set on her. Zack Kittredge can't shake the feeling that he's something missing regarding his new neighbor.
A beautiful, well written, entertaining read in one sitting story, 4,5 stars.
