This was my first Katy Birchall book and I thought it was just alright. The characters weren't anything spectacular and I was expecting it to be a bit more funny based on the blurb. Overall it kept my attention mostly but was just an average read for me. Nothing exciting.
4.5 stars. Katy Birchall crafts a book in a way that really works for me. I originally got this from NetGalley but didn't read it right away-I ended up listening to the audio from my library instead. The narrator was great. It's a rom-com about Freya, and her fiance breaks off their relationship on the eve of their wedding. To help her get through the next several months, when she has several weddings to attend, her best friends create a wedding season survival plan. The story has lots of humor and heart. Like most rom-coms, the characters aren't super well developed, but that's not what I expect in this genre so it doesn't bother me in the slightest. The main characters, though, each had a unique voice and played an important role in the arc of the story - nothing felt unnecessary or like it was just thrown in for good measure. This is the second of this author's books that I've read (the other being her 2023 release The Last Word), and I'll definitely read more from her. Loved it!
I have received this arc from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The Wedding Season was hilarious and kept me laughing the entire book. Sure, in the beginning it was a little sad but man - it got better. Freya has one thing going for her and that's when Matthew, her fiancé, breaks up with her a day before their wedding. Which, surely, you are wondering why I'm even saying this?!? Just know that it's one hundred precent true and the best thing to ever happen (to her).
She grows so much with the help from her friends, family and someone new along the way. Oh man, I loved the romance that was brewing between them because of the freaking banter. Plus, they could be so awkwardly adorable too. They were becoming friends and then the best of friends. It was a beautiful romance and I'm so happy with how things ended.
If Freya can get through the wedding season challenge, falling in love with someone new, and create a beautiful wedding toast to feet - then I think we can all do anything we set our mind to. So happy that I got the chance to dive into this and will need a new romcom by Katy ASAP!
"The Wedding Season" by Katy Birchall is a book about love, life and discovery along with some humor. Freya has her world turned upside down when he wedding to her long time boyfriend is called off. With the help of her friends and their elaborate challenges, Freya herself is able to get through wedding season. Freya learns to love herself and with the help of friends and family is able to get through the trauma. I really enjoyed this book.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press.
Such a cute story. I loved all the characters. Ruby and Leo were amazing and really had me routing for them more than Freya and Jamie. I have come to adore this author's works and seek them out because she writes people that I can see myself being friends with.
The cover of the book really drew me in and I am glad it did because this book was a whirlwind of fun and all the feels.
Fun! I'm a fan of Katy Birchall's wedding-themed books. They're a great little escape. The Wedding Season was bittersweet and sad at times, while at the same time being charming and funny throughout.
This one was cute and quirky. A nice little story, albeit predictable. I did enjoy the aspect of the different challenges to complete at each wedding which added a lot of life to the story.
This was such a fun book watching Freya come back from a terrible "left at the altar" situation with Matthew. Watching her navigate the wedding season with a great group of friends is entertaining. I will definitely recommend this to women's fiction and romance readers who enjoy a plucky heroine making her way through a bad situation. I look forward to the next book from Katy Birchall.
3.5 rounding up to 4 stars. This book was more about the main character's journey. It felt more like fiction than a rom com. It was not quite what I expected, but it was still an enjoyable read. Freya's friendships were really great.
Thanks to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the arc. All opinions are my own.
DO read this book if you are a lover of romantic comedies and you don't need a ton of romance or spice.
DON'T read this book if you're looking for a spicy romance book for your next beach vacation.
It's warm and lovely and tells the story of a woman going through a challenging time and her supportive friend group's plan to help her through it. Freya has been jilted and isn't excited to be seen single at all of the upcoming weddings she's been invited to, but she will power through and learn about herself along the way!
The Wedding Season by Katy Birchall is a fun light-hearted romance novel about Freya and the challenges that her friends give her after her fiance calls things off the day before their wedding. Since Freya has several other weddings to go to that summer, her friends give her a list of challenges to complete at each wedding. This book was a lot of fun, and I really appreciated how important friends and family were throughout. Thanks to NetGalley for the free digital review copy. All opinions are my own.
Katy Birchall is such a talented author - she writes the best dialogue and the most heartfelt characters! I really loved The Secret Bridesmaid when I read it, so I was quite excited to get an ARC of The Wedding Season. This book toes the line between a romance and women's fiction, and it was just as much about the main character, Freya's, growth and journey as it was about her pursuing love. It was light and fun but also had a lot of depth and emotion - and as I do with all of Katy Birchall's books, I found myself laughing out loud several times during the book! I highly recommend The Wedding Season.
Read this back in 2022, didn't think that it was very memorable and didn't enjoy the lead character.
This was a cute, light read. If you're looking for something to "cleanse your brain" as in nothing too deep or serious, this is the book for you and in a good way. Solid 3 stars for me.
The Wedding Season follows main character Freya after her fiancé breaks up with her the day before her wedding. Her two best friends decide to make a list of tasks she must complete at each of the weddings she has that year, in order to help her survive the wedding season!
You guys - I enjoyed this one SO MUCH more than I thought I would. It's a wonderful story about finding yourself and the importance of those friendships that keep you grounded and friends who check in on you to make sure you're okay.
While I understand that romance wasn't the main focus of this story, I loved Freya and Jamie's chemistry so much and am sad we didn't get to see more of them together (Honestly I would love a sequel of this one!).
Despite having a wide number of characters (featured across multiple weddings), all the characters were unique and memorable.
The perfect fluffy summer read!
I loved this book. It was the perfect combination of funny, witty, and emotional. Katy Birchall is a fantastic writer, and Freya was a great main character. I loved all of the challenges she had to do during the wedding season. I will definitely be recommending this one!
A definite beachy read. Freya’s life is turned upside down when her fiancé calls off their wedding the day before. A fun laugh out loud not the typical rom com read.
A really fun and quick women’s fiction to read. The story itself wasn’t revolutionary, it was not one of a kind, it definitely wasn’t heart wrenching and all touching and ‘gooeys feeleys’. However, I can guarantee that if you like a story centered around a friend group, just sharing life problems together, spending the time joking and playing around, finding love, and not only romantic love, but people who really love you in the way that they will be ready to support you if anything happens. Also, it was cute to see how our main characters found her love in both ways through the love interest and through her friends and families. Not only that, I love how the character growth was written slowly but we can definitely see the character is growing little by little throughout the book. This was very lighthearted, it was something fun to pass the time during my free time!
{Book Review} The Wedding Season by Katy Birchall
Having loved Katy Birchall's THE SECRET BRIDESMAID, I was ecstatic to get THE WEDDING SEASON for review. Both books are absolute gems and so incredibly good but if The Secret Bridesmaid leaned into humor, The Wedding Season leaned into emotion.
After being jilted the day before her wedding, Freya is helped by her two best friends to get through the upcoming wedding season (file the term ‘wedding season’ under phrases I literally loathe with my entire being as a fun aside) by giving her absurd tasks to complete at each wedding. These tasks were fun and mostly light-hearted and the friendship aspect of this book was top notch. I loved how her friends were there for her and continued to lift her up and support her.
The weddings were fun and Freya grew so much over the book while dealing with the grief of mourning a relationship that lasted over a decade. I felt like her emotional arc was realistic and genuine as was her ability to see the relationship for what it was after taking off some complacent rose-colored glasses.
I adored this book and look forward to whatever Katy Birchall writes next. In fact, I’ll take Nuer next book now k, thanks!
