Thank you NetGalley, Katy Birchall & St Martin Press for an advance copy of this book.
The Wedding Season will be published on May 3rd.
This is my first book from Katy Birchall. I had remember seeing her most recent book "The Secret Bridesmaid" and had heard positive reviews about it.
"How can someone be the most important person in the world to you and then just like that, they're gone from your life? Vanished?"
Quick Take: Freya is about to marry her long time boyfriend Matthew of 12 years but the night before her wedding he decides that he couldn't do it anymore. Heartbroken Freya is left to clean up everything. Luckily she has a supportive brother, father and best friends to help her get through it. If that wasn't bad enough she is also at the age where she has not one, not two but seven weddings to attend including some where her ex was going to be at. Her two best friends Ruby & Leo came up with a plan to help her get through the Wedding Season. Each wedding she is set with a task to complete to help her focus on the task and not everything else surrounding the wedding.
This book made me smile from front to back. The way Birchall wrote each character and the dialogue was so well written and funny. It felt like reading real conversations. I mean how often do you get the term "slut drop" written in the book. On a personal note I loved the reference to "My Best Friend's Wedding" which is one of my favorite rom com and also there was a reference to Busted which took me back to senior year of HS when my love of them was on high.
I believe this book is listed as a romance book which in some parts there is a little bit of romance but was more about a woman trying to find her way back to herself and more chick lit. I really think this would be a great movie. I know I definitely would enjoy watching it.
This was a fine read, but it was not for me, maybe because it was more of a work of women's fiction than a romance. And the story was kind of dragging. I skimmed through it and we were still in the same conversation, which was so unnecessary to read. I guess I got my hopes up because I definitely liked the description, but then again, it wasn't for me.
Seriously Mathew? After 12 years together, he walks out on Freya right before their wedding, She's distraught and at sea and she's got seven more weddings to attend this summer. Luckily, she's got terrific friends in Ruby and Leo and their plan that she must do one task for each wedding, turns into a chance to find herself. It's funny and while there's a new love interest (of course). that's less the focus than Freya's personal growth. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. A good read that will make you smile.
This was a lovely story of self-love and growth, forgiveness, and moving on. I really enjoyed the characters and the story!
Freya has just been left, not quite at the altar, but in the broom closet. Regardless of the location, she’s got an entire wedding to unravel now. After taking some time to recover from the heartbreak, it’s closing in on the wedding season, and Freya’s friends have her back. They give her a challenge to complete at each wedding. The challenges are to help her get through the wedding and get over Matthew.
Freya takes these challenges head on. Some go better than others, but the journey along the way provides overall growth and healing for her. I loved being a part of it, and I think other readers will as well. Freya’s character is easy to like, and her friends are so supportive, you want to get to know them as well.
There’s a nice romance storyline in here, but really, I think this book is about the growing and healing that happens after a breakup, and the glimmer of new romance on the horizon. I highly recommend this one for readers that enjoy lighter reads of family, friends, and love.
3.5 stars- While this isn’t quite the romantic comedy I’d kind of hoped for, this was a very cute, uplifting story. I enjoyed all the characters and the idea of the main character’s friends giving her fun tasks for the many weddings she’ll be attending to help with her broken heart. I could see this really working in real life. I would have loved to have more of her and her love interest, but in the end it wouldn’t have made as much sense for the main character’s story. I liked that even though her ex said he “knew they would get married”, it didn’t work out that way, which feels so much more realistic than many romance novels and movies. I also like that even though her ex also claimed they didn’t make sense because they were opposites, it didn’t feel like that idea was proven valid, or invalid. Sometimes things just aren’t that simple, and this book really demonstrates that (maybe the author is really the pragmatic one?)
One small criticism is that reading the text conversations was extremely confusing because of how they were formatted, but that’s easily fixable.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for providing me access to this eARC for my honest opinion!
I had very few expectations going into The Wedding Season since Katy Birchall was a new-to-me author. But I can promise you that from here on out, I will definitely be reading everything she writes! This was the perfect blend of women's fiction, romance, comedy, and heartfelt moments. I adored watching Freya become a better, happier version of herself with the support of friends and family through quite the wedding season. Absolutely delightful!
Thank you, NetGalley, for my e-arc of this book. All opinions here are my own.
I absolutely adored The Wedding Season, I sped through it. It was both funny and heartfelt and I was constantly rooting for Freya. I enjoyed that it was a story about Freya finding her independence after heartbreak as much as it was a rom-com and finding new romance. I hope that this will be a series as I would love reading and following along with more of Freya Scott.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author, for an ARC of this book, in exchange for an honest review.
Fun, fun, fun.
That's how I describe "The Wedding Season" by Katy Birchall.
Rom-coms aren't the type of book I usually read but the plot sounded interesting & I'm glad I took a chance on it.
I would definitely read another book by this author.
This was an incredibly impactful and heart filled story about a couple that breaks up the day before their wedding. I loved the main character's healing journey and growth throughout the story. It was a love letter to feeling whole again and was a wonderful book to read!
I don't remember laughing so much when I read The secret bridesmaid (the author's last book) but boy could I not stop laughing throughout this Bridget Jones-esque British rom-com!!
Freya thinks she has things all figured out until her fiancé dumps her the day before their wedding. What follows is Freya learning how to move on from her only serious relationship while also having to attend a series of her friends' weddings. Told with humor and so much heart, this story was equally moving and entertaining.
I loved Freya's friendships and the way they supported her. Her two closest friends give her a series of challenges to complete that keep the story lighthearted and fun but she also deals with her strained relationship with her mother and a new love interest that develops over the summer.
Highly recommended especially for fans of The breakup bridesmaid or Bridget Jones's Diary and great on audio! Much thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for my advance review copies!
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC of The Wedding Season. I am sharing my review voluntarily.
Freya’s engagement ends the day before her wedding. She spends the summer reflecting on the past 12 years of her life and identify in a couple and what it means to set out on her own. She has seven weddings to attend in one summer, and while she looks forward to celebrating her friends, she feels daunted by the months ahead. Her friends create a challenge for every wedding. What starts out as a fun distraction becomes more meaningful with each wedding.
The Wedding Season started out really slow for me. I didn’t connect with Freya and her journey until later in the story as she started to explore her own needs and feelings. Reflecting back I think the author did a wonderful job of showing readers how closed off she was and the change was palpable. I loved the snarky, sarcastic woman who knew her own voice that emerged.
The writing was pithy and memorable. I loved the dialogue and Freya’s network of friends and family were top notch. There were a lot of characters but they were distinct and easy to differentiate. Jamie was by far the sweetest and I loved her easy friendship with Ruby and Leo.
I loved that this was a love story about Freya falling in lover with herself and her life as much as it was about moving on with a new partner. The drama was emotional in nature and high stakes at times but not overwritten.
I suggest this if you enjoy exploring complex emotions, a story about people knowing their own voices and finding love in all their relationships.
I need all my romcom readers to immediately go to their tbr and add this title!
Freya has been with her boyfriend for 12 years and its the day before their wedding... when she suddenly finds herself dumped and now single in a broom closet. Shes heartbroken but shes got to get through wedding season and attending the weddings of 7 other couples. Her besties step in and create a wedding survival guide for her... small tasks she has to complete at every wedding to help keep her mind off her ex... you know things like dance away the night, get a guys cufflinks, run naked down the hotel hallway... haha! Of course there is also a love interest for her on her journey too.
I really, really enjoyed this book. It was sooo funny. Like laughing out loud looking around that no ones watching you laugh to yourself in public kind of laughing. And though it is a rom com and there is a love story and he is cuteeee, it wasnt centre stage. This was really a story about a woman on a journey of self discovery and acceptance... but in a hilarious way.

Thank you to @netgalley and the publisher for the digital ARC of this book. All opinions remain my own as always.
This falls more into women's fiction. I think if I didn't have the audiobook I don't think I would have finished ONLY because the first 25% of the book is hard to get through emotionally. Freya gets dumped by her fiancé Matthew the night before her wedding...in a closet. He was her first love and long time relationship of 12 years since collage so the first 25% we are seeing Freya learning to cope and just be in a complete miserable state. It was not fun to read that. Plus she had 7 other weddings (friends) to go to and I don't think we even got all of the weddings. Plus Freya's family dynamics also left a bad taste as they were not fun to read about either. I do like Jamie's character (new love interest) he was a breath of fresh air for the story. The ending ended up being bittersweet because it took a lot to get there.
I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I absolutely adored this book. Poor Freya was dumped a day before a wedding and has to attend 7 more wedding this summer. It reminded me so much of 4 wedding and a funeral. It’s a beautiful story of heartbreak, friendship and moving on. Yes the discussion of Matthew was a lot but when you heart is broken in a million pieces it makes sense.
Nothing good comes from a broom cupboard, except for Harry Potter.
Freya is a bit lost. The life she has built and known is gone in one fell swoop, but now she’s on a journey of self discovery. I love a story that starts from a character's lowest point. This author has a knack for bringing the emotions to the forefront of her stories and making the reader feel empathetic towards the characters' situation. You go along on this journey with Freya as she discovers herself again.
This is the quintessential RomCom. The heroine goes from one mishap to another, which should make her look foolish, but somehow she is charming and charismatic in every scene. There’s laughter, heartfelt emotions with reconciliation and forgiveness, and there’s the hot man who brings out the messiness in a well tidy life. This is one of those feel good books that reaffirms your spirits in both love and friendship and reminds you that the beauty of life is living it. So let’s raise our glasses and cheers to feet! Thank you St. Martins Press and NetGalley for this eARC
I really liked how this book was a bit different that a lot of romance stories. It more focused on the female MC and her finding herself again as opposed to a couple (not that there wasn’t romance cause there was but it wasn’t as in the forefront as other books). It is definitely a story where you can relate to characters and feel like it is an experience that you or someone close to you has had. Also, there were a decent amount of funny moments in it that it makes for a very well rounded experience.
The Wedding Season was such a cute and fun read, perfect as we enter actual wedding season! I'm a wedding planner and sometimes books centered around weddings can be tough for me, but I loved the unique spin on this one. It was a lot of fun watching Freya complete her different tasks and find new relationships with her friends, family, and herself. I absolutely loved her friends and really enjoyed getting glimpses of all the different weddings throughout the book. This was a very enjoyable read!
this book was great. i saw her raw emotion she had of being left at the altar and having to attend all of these weddings. I was hooked on it from the start. I will read more of Katy Birchall books.
I loved this book from start to finish! It was an excellent journey for the main character Freya. Freya’s fiancé calls off their wedding the day before, which of course is such a heart break for her. Luckily she has a support system of family and friends that we all aspire to have in our life. Not only are they constantly checking on her but they are pushing her to discover who she really is, try new things and experience life like she never has before. Freya’s life would never be the same after this traumatic event but that does not mean things can only get worse. It’s a relatable feeling that fate is a real thing and everything happens for a reason. A very big thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.
This story centers around Freya as she approaches the "wedding season" in her life, all in one summer/fall. Her wedding is due to be the first to kick it off and her best friends Leo and Ruby are getting married in the fall to finish the season. She has seven weddings to attend within this timeframe! When her fiance, Matthew, unexpectedly calls of the wedding and breaks things off with her the day before her wedding, she's sent into a tailspin. They've been together for 12 years - how is he just now realizing that maybe he doesn't want to be with her!? And, to make it all worse, she has to attend all of these weddings of her friends and family members (a) without Matthew and (b) as the girl who was stood up basically at the altar. She's dreading it until Leo and Ruby come up with a list of challenges she has to complete - one per wedding throughout the season. She decides to play along and see how the season goes with her mind focused on the list instead of her breakup.
Honestly this book wasn't what I expected! Don’t go into this thinking it’ll be a rom-com. There is romance and there’s definitely some comedy but it’s more about getting over the breakup and moving on than anything else. I thought it’d be lighter. Freya spends a ton of time going back and forth on Matthew, essentially waiting for him to come back to her and realize he messed up. I wanted to shake her a lot and make her realize that she was much better off without him.
Freya meets some great people along her journey during the wedding season and I loved seeing her growth, especially with her relationship with her mom. I absolutely loved these characters - Leo and Ruby especially were so great. I would love a prequel story about how the two of them went from best friends to dating!
I was genuinely laughing out loud a lot, which was nice for a book that’s kind of sad on and off throughout. It was fun to watch her complete the challenges and the funny ways each one ended up happening. I loved this book throughout, especially once I adjusted my expectations a bit. I highly recommend it as long as you don't expect a cheery romantic comedy without its fair share of more sad/serious moments.
