After reading Katy Birchall's book The Secret Bridesmaid I knew that I had to get my hands on this one.
Freya gets dumped by her long-time boyfriend hours before their wedding, and to top it off, she must attend a whole season of weddings this year on her own. Her best friends, Ruby and Leo decide it's time for Freya to stop moping, and plan out a list of wedding season challenges she must complete at each wedding she attends. There is so much growth and character development for Freya and you'll find yourself cheering her on, as she blossoms with each task.
Read this book if you want to have a good laugh, or if you've ever experienced a broken heart before.
This book was incredible. Go and get a copy on May 3, 2022! I found myself smiling and laughing the whole time.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I loved this one. There were moments of levity and thoughtfulness, laugh-out-loud antics, and poignant revelations. I actually grinned, chuckled, chortled, and snickered while reading it. I had those moments where my chest got heavy and my eyes started to sting. At the end of the book, I had a warm fuzzy feeling.
There were friendships, familial relationships, and romantic ones. It has a great ensemble cast of secondary characters. I found myself cheering for Freya alongside her family and friends.
I would love to see this turned into a movie.
This was a solid 4 star read for me! It was such a beautiful story! For me I loved the fact that it was more than a story of romance, it was also a story about healing and moving on from heartbreak. I loved Freya as a main character, I found her to be super relatable and we had the same sense of humor. The pacing of this book was so great and it was super cute without adding any unnecessary fluff! This was overall just super well done.
The wedding season is a super heartfelt and unique take on a rom com. Freyas journey is amazing to watch her grow and connect with her emotions after receiving the news the night before her wedding her fiancé is calling it off. Her relationship with her friends makes you laugh out loud and want to be right there with them as they help her navigate her feelings and challenging herself. I would definitely recommend this book and hope there are more stories coming.
When Matthew breaks up with Freya in her broom closet the day before their wedding…Freya thinks there is no way she can survive the wedding season without losing it. Her best friends Leo and Ruby come up with a list of fun and out of the box things for her to do at each wedding to get her mind off her break up and back into the world of the living …and possibly dating.
What Freya doesn’t expect is a laid back man like Jaime to make her laugh and change her perspective on life. It may be just what she needs to survive- The wedding season.
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, St. Martin’s Press and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
Charming, engaging and funny! Seriously a delight to read.
Freya is about to get married to the love of her life, Matthew. But he breaks up with her after 12 years in a closet the day before their wedding. Freya is left spiraling in a world that no longer makes sense and she has already agreed to attend seven weddings. Luckily her best friends Leo and Ruby have a plan. Seven tasks for each wedding with the final one being a surprise in honor of their wedding. Can Freya survive The Wedding Season?
I really enjoyed this take on the romcom genre. It's really refreshing to read about a main character going through a break up and focusing on putting their life back together. Yes this book does feature some romcom elements, really cute ships, and weddings; but I wouldn't classify this as a typical romance. It's more about learning to love yourself and readjust your life when stuff doesn't work out the way you'd like. And honestly? I really loved how this was presented.
The characters were pretty great, too! I loved Freya's besties Ruby and Leo. They were supportive and came up with the crazy list that provided the foundation for a lot of this book. Also Freya's dad and brother are to be protected. (Honestly the brother needs his own book). Then there was Mr. Potential Love Interest, who had many cute moments with Freya! All in all, this book had the character dynamics that I love to read about.
Special thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Griffin for the eARC! I really appreciate it!
4 stars/5
0.5 spice factor (there is one scene with kissing - very clean story!)
Wow! What a great Rom-Com! I adored Freya's story; while reading I found myself laughing out loud several times.
We meet Freya on a Friday evening running through a checklist and taking care of last minute tasks for her wedding the next day. Her wedding is the first of 8 she will be part of throughout the year. When her soon-to-be-husband shows up he tells her they need to talk. Freya doesn't expect anything to be wrong but soon finds herself alone in a broom closet, no longer engaged. Knowing she has 7 weddings to endure and wanting to keep her distracted, Freya's best friends Ruby and Leo create a Wedding Season survival guide with tasks to complete at each wedding. This list is not going to be easy to complete for straight-laced, "keep within the lines" Freya. But she is determined to get outside her comfort zone and complete the tasks.
As I mentioned - this book had me laughing! Freya's banter with her new friend, Jamie, was adorable from their first meeting! I thought Freya's story was both cute and uplifting. We see her come to terms with the reasons her relationship ended, brave weddings on her own, and make new friends. The story is told from 1st person POV and in a very conversational manner. I found myself wanting to be friends with Freya, Ruby and Leo, as well as their other friends. This was a fun bunch to go on this Wedding Season journey with.
Oh my goodness! How much I just loved this book!
From the first page's dedication I knew I was going to love this novel. I am a wedding photographer and I don't think it ever clicked just how hard the past two years were until I read the dedication from Katy to the wedding industry. I teared up and I am totally a "Freya" that doesn't get too emotional over things.
Look, I was already going to give this novel a high review because it ticked all the boxes for me. It was a beautifully balanced story about the ups and downs of life and love. There were sad moments, there were HILARIOUS moments and there were the building blocks that created this lovely book's world.
THEN THE WINE SCENE.
That was pure poetry in all the ways only those who have had a confusing breakup can know. PERFECTION.
THEN!
THEN!
SHE THREW IN ANNE OF AVONLEA and one of my most favorite parts of that novel and I was deceased.
Come for the good story, stay for the strong heroine, leave with a smile and a happy heart.

Thank you for giving me access to this ARC! I had a fun time reading this. It was fast paced, and I read it all in one day.
I love a good rom-com and this one really hit the mark. I love all of the relationships in this book. Freya’s friendships were particularly interesting and funny to follow, and I found myself loving most of the characters in this book.
At times, I found the dialogue a bit unnatural, but besides that I really enjoyed it!
This was my first read by Katy Birchall, but I will definitely be looking into more of her work in the future.
I was really impressed with this title.
Our main character, Freya, is about to embark on the adventures brought into your life after a life altering breakup. She’s also about to embark on getting to know herself again, getting closer with her girlfriends, and working on a relationship with her mother. You’re cheering for Freya the entire time, you want her to succeed and each time she accomplishes something, you’re happy for her.
The story is engaging, it’s a little funny to think that a story built from a breakup could be such a happy pick me up, but that’s exactly what I found it to be.
I definitely recommend The Wedding Season.
Thank you NetGalley for an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is my second Katy Birchall read and she’s quickly becoming a solid go to. Her writing is so smooth and so easily readable. I was immediately connected to the story, I genuinely laughed multiple times at dialogue and situations, and it was just such an all around gem to read. I could easily see this being on screen as the next British rom-com.
“It turns out that just as people can always surprise you, you can also completely unintentionally, and yet rather wonderfully, surprise yourself.“
The Wedding Season is written in the first person narrative from the perspective of Freya. On the eve of her wedding, Freya gets dumped by her fiancé and boyfriend of 12 years, Matthew, in a broom cupboard at the venue. Her wedding was the kick-off of the season and now she needs to suffer through 7 more weddings solo. Her best friend’s Ruby and Leo drunkenly devise a series of challenges she must complete at each wedding, designed to distract her from Matthew and what might have been. By the time the final wedding rolls around, Freya realizes the end of one failed happy ending might have just been the start of a wonderful new beginning.
Wow! I really enjoyed this. Not to sound cheesy but this book was seriously a delight. I’m a sucker for a British romcom and, after loving The Secret Bridesmaid, Birchall is quickly solidifying herself as one of my top authors in this genre. Laugh-out-loud funny, extremely relatable, and excellent banter between literally every single character. The real magic in this story is that it is much more than a romance. Freya is a fantastic character and I was rooting for her every step of the way. I love how we see her hilarious friendships, close-knit relationship with her brother and dad, not so close relationship with her mother, and a glimpse into her career life. Jaime is an A+ love interest and had me swooning every step of the way once him and Freya become wedding pals. One of my favorite slow burn romances ever and they really shared such lovely chemistry. Birchall really knows how to capture the magic of weddings! Highly recommend this one if you enjoy romcoms, books about weddings, funny antics, and excellent love interests with a worthwhile slow burn.
I loved this! So enjoyable and a fast, fun read. Freya was such a great character. I loved Jamie. I didn’t want this book to end!
This was my first Katy Birchall’s book and the minute after I was done, I found myself looking for more of her work.
The Wedding Season was such a clever, funny, and charming read and I just couldn’t get enough.
After being dumped the day before her wedding, Freya, who luckily has the best friends on planet Earth, begins to find herself once more and in turns finds that sometimes the unexpected turns out to be the thing we needed the most.
I loved Jamie and Freya’s relationship and constant banter that kept me on my toes, as well as Freya’s cast of best friends.
Truly recommend!
This book was amazing.
“How to survive the Wedding Season.” “You’re kidding, right?” I ask nervously. She stares back. “Do I look like I’m kidding? I’ve written the title at the top of the page, Freya”—she taps it with her finger—“and I’ve underlined it. You don’t underline titles at the top of the page unless you’re serious about them."
First of all, I loved that it was in London. As I read it was all in a British accent. The MC was so hilarious I loved her so much and her friends were so great! I highlighted so many things and plan on buying the physical copy.
Synopsis: freya has been with Matthew for 12 years and he breaks up with her the day before their wedding. He calls her together and other boring terms and says that he's too emotional for her. (A bunch of bs in my opinion) Basically, this story is about what happens after that. How she gets through it. It is a very busy wedding season which her wedding was going to start but now she isn't getting married and realizes how hard it's going to be to get through the weddings. Her best friends help her come up with a wedding challenge to get her through the wedding and to make her focus elsewhere and not think about her ex so much. Also, to prove to herself that she isn't this boring person he made her out to be.
This story is so funny. It has a bit of romance but to me that isn't the main focus. The main focus is freya healing. It's about what great friends she has. They love her and take care of her. They say some hilarious things and the banter / sarcasm between them is so perfect, there is some tearful moments and there is even family reconciliation in this story. It's just so good.
Some of my favorite quotes:
“Are you both mad?! Today is meant to be about you two!” “Yes, and you are very much part of us. We’ve put a lot of thought into this final task. You’ve been successful at all the others, but this one is a real game changer.”
“Mum, you burying a sausage has no effect on the weather. It’s science.” “It’s faith, darling. Sometimes it’s healthy to have some of that.”
If we were able to plan everything, we’d never change; we’d never learn or grow. Take ponds, for example. It’s the messy ones that are full of life.”
“I feel like we’re having quite a nice moment, so I’m not going to ruin it by telling you how insulting that was, but I intend to bring it up later.”
“I hope you told him where he can stick his thank-you.” I wince at my parting shot. “Actually, I told him his shoes didn’t go with his trousers.” They all burst into hysterics and their laughter is so infectious that I start giggling, too, even though I feel rubbish.
Read this if you:
*have ever experienced a broken engagement
*have gone to 8+ weddings in a year
*have the best & most supportive friends ever
*liked the secret bridesmaid
SWOON. That’s it. That’s the review. Go read this 🥰🥰

The Wedding Season by Katy Birchall is fun, emotional and romantic. We begin the book the day before Freya and Matthew’s wedding. Their wedding will kick off “wedding season”, the first of eight that year between their friends and family. Everything is perfect.—until Matthew breaks things off. To get her through the seven weddings (!) she still has to attend, her two best friends set up a series of challenges for each wedding. This sets off a series of events that change Freya’s life and perspective on herself, their relationship, and her future.
I really enjoyed this book! It was equal parts funny, emotional and romantic. Freya is a great main character: the way the author writes her narrating the story feels authentic. She’s endearing and relatable. The transformation she goes through doesn’t make her a different/better person, just more well rounded and open to possibilities—like new love. I will be recommending this for purchase at my library and adding it to my personal collection.

I read this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed Katy Birchall's last book, The Secret Bridesmaid, and this one is just as good.
It's smart, with hilarious banter, insightful and honest. I remember feeling and doing a lot of what Freya did after a broken heart (obviously not the list because that was pure brilliance).
The friend group Freya has is just amazing, and her family is wonderful too. In the end, the way Freya deals with Matthew is really insightful.
And how could you not love Jamie? Wishing there was more steam in that department but that's just me.
There is just so much to this book, no review can do it justice, it needs to be read!
Katy Birchall won my heart with The Secret Bridesmaid.
When I seen another one her fabulous books up for grabs I snagged it!
𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘦𝘥𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘚𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘰𝘯 is one of those books you that keeps you wanting more.
The closer I got towards the end the slower I read. I didn't want this book to end.
When I enjoy a story as much as I did this one sometimes I wish it could be 500+ pages. (Wishful Thinking)
TWS kept me smiling throughout the entire story and had me laughing from the very beginning.
One of the most charming, entertaining, truest book I've read in some time.
The writing itself is fantastic, effortlessly fun and totally clever.
This book really exceeded my expectations. I was anticipating a fun read but this was just so much more than that.
St. Martin's Griffin,
