Another family with issues. The parents divorced and the mother took her twins to an inn in the country, while the father stayed in the city with the eldest daughter. The eldest daughter followed in her father's footsteps, becoming a lawyer and working at his firm.
This story was amazing! A sweet story about family loss and how to reconnect! 5 stars for this one!
Cami is returning to Cape Sanctuary to help out her mother with a legal problem. It's a place she's never felt at home in, since when her parents divorced, she stayed in LA with her dad while her twin sisters moved to the cape with their mother. Sure she spent summer's there, but it never truly felt like home and she never felt the connection with her sisters Lily and Violet. Now that Lily's gone, maybe there's a chance for her and her sister to reconnect, along with her mother.
This story was full of love, hard times, and realizations that everything isn't always what it seems!
Don't miss out, this was a new to me author and I loved this story!
Sisters Cami and Violet separated by their parents divorce work their way back to each other after the death of their sister Lily (twin to Violet). While helping their mother bring Lily's glamping dream to fruition they all confront past hurts and find healing and forgiveness. A great book to take on vacation.
Summer at the Cape returns us to Cape Sanctuary, a lovely, picturesque, warm and welcoming small town on the northern California coast, and, as I've come to expect from RaeAnne Thayne, this is another wonderful, dramatic and angst-filled novel which examines how one broken family deals with the loss of a beloved twin daughter, Lily, their attempts to carry on without her, to fulfill one of her dreams, reconcile past issues with one another, and reconnect with each other and some of the people in their own pasts. It's most definitely a 5-star read.
Four months earlier, Lily, twin sister of Violet, lost her life after rescuing two young girls who were being dragged out to sea by a rogue wave. Lily and her mother, Rosemary, were, at the time, setting up a glampground--a luxury campground for the well-to-do on some adjacent headland property, overlooking the Pacific. When Lily got their neighbor, Franklin Rafferty, to agree to sign a lease agreement, it was never witnessed or notarized. When Franklin's son, Jonathan (Jon), an archaeologist working in Guatemala, returns home to heal after an injury, he's convinced that the Porters are trying to pull a fast one on his father, who he soon discovers is suffering from dementia, and Jon wants the glampground off his property and moved elsewhere, even though it's fully booked for the season.
Cami (Camellia) Porter, an attorney working in her father's law firm, is overworked and exhausted, and has recently kicked her lawyer fiancé to the curb. When her mother, Rosemary, calls and requests her assistance, Cami finally agrees to take a long-needed vacation and help. The family situation is complicated. When Cami's parents divorced when Cami was 14, her twin sisters lived with their mother in Cape Sanctuary, while Cami was sent to live with her father, only visiting her mother and sisters on rare occasions. While the sisters knew each other, they certainly weren't close, and Cami felt like an outcast, since the decision to separate the sisters was made for her.
Then there's Violet, who is still in mourning the loss of her twin, the twin she felt was the charming one, the one who was loved and admired by all who met her. Violet and her high school boyfriend, Alex, were in love, and he wanted to marry her, but she was heading off to college at age 19, and wasn't ready for marriage, so she suggested they date others for a while. What she didn't expect was that 6 months later, Alex would marry her high school nemesis, who was pregnant with Alex's child, leaving her heartbroken. Ten years later, he's divorced now, and his daughter is one of the young girls that Lily lost her life rescuing...and that's just for starters.
As I've come to appreciate, Ms. Thayne writes wonderful, angst-filled novels, filled with well-developed, sympathetic, and interesting characters, who draw you in, make you laugh and cry, and most of all, understand the problems they face and how they solve them. Beautifully written, this novel does all of that and more--it makes you want to pack your bags, head straight to Cape Sanctuary, and become part of this charming and beautiful community. In lieu of relocating, I recommend reading this novel, as well as the other novels set in this wonderful community.
I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions stated are my own.
Life is full of choices, some good, some difficult, some work out and others just don’t. There are times, though, that life makes its own choices. Sounds odd but true. For the Porter family some of life’s choices left them bereft and sad. Now many years later the Porters are finally facing the ramifications of those life choices.
Twin sisters Violet and Lily stayed with their mother Rosemary when their parents divorced. Older sister Cami went with their dad Ted to Los Angeles. An odd arrangement for sure but the parents had agreed that this would benefit the girls. Surely this had to be a strange decision. And fast forward to the present we all see that it caused many problems.
Now back in Cape Sanctuary, Violet, Cami and Rosemary are working as a team to keep one of Lily’s dreams alive. Lily had drowned in an accident saving two young girls. But developing a glampground was a reality that Lily was proud of. Unfortunately her death now put much of the work and responsibility on her mother Rosemary shoulders. The three Porter women joined forces to see that the current sold out season was a success.
There were several other distractions and issues that demanded their attention. Not the least was the uncertain lease of the land where the glampcamp was built. But these women were strong, caring, smart and unflagging in their desire to see Lily’s dream continue.
Jon is utterly surprised and sad to see the condition his father is in. Jon is also dismayed that the Porter women have taken advantage of his father’s rather obvious diminished capacity. Back from a historical excavation Jon appreciates and agrees with his father’s stance on protecting their land. One of his favorite sayings is that our culture and society will be preserved not only by the things we create but by the things we refuse to destroy. So naturally Jon feels that the Wild Hearts luxury camp goes against all he works at protecting.
Lots of relationships to handle in this small town. Some old, some thought discarded and others brand new. The community was center to the lives of these people and the way they offer help and care is absolutely amazing. That’s what RaeAnne Thayne develops so adroitly in SUMMER AT THE CAPE. Her character development is second to none. And her description of the beauty and responsibility for an area like Cape Sanctuary has you yearning for a chance to visit. All relationships have challenges. It is in these challenges we face making choices. Sometimes it means taking a step back to see what we really want. In SUMMER AT THE CAPE RaeAnne Thayne helps her characters make better choices. SUMMER AT THE CAPE is a great choice for reading on the beach this summer.
4.75 stars
Summer at the Cape, by RaeAnne Thayne, is an absolutely beautiful, tender, moving story that you won’t want to miss. It’s a clean romance and family drama that incorporates several heavier, more serious topics into the plot with clarity and grace.
When Lily suddenly passes away saving the lives of two little girls, her family is devastated, and each has to recover in their own way. Unlike many similar situations, this tragic event eventually draws the family members back together, each for their own reasons, and we get to share their personal stories, romances, heartaches and healing.
This story is scenic and descriptive, inviting and atmospheric. I loved the setting and the Glampground theme. The characters felt real, relatable, likeable, like genuine people whom you’d want to spend time with in real life.
Summer at the Cape was a joy to read and one of Ms. Thayne’s best novels yet!
This is my favorite kind of romance - it had wonderful characters that you root for, the people all really cared about each other ( not just physical attraction ) and the attraction happened slowly and naturally.
Along with the romance, the story was about the family healing from the death of one of the sisters. Each one grieved in their own way, in their own timing - it was not overly sad, but the emotions were shown. The ending was exactly what I expected and wanted.
It is such a heartwarming story. RaeAnn Thayne just writes the kind of story I want to read.
I am always excited when a new Raeanne Thayne book comes out, and I loved Summer at the Cape. It is a wonderful story of families working through life’s challenges. Cami has lived separately from her mother and twin sisters since their parents’ divorce. Cami with her father, Ted, in Los Angeles, and the twins, Lily and Vi with their mother in Cape Sanctuary. The family is grieving Lily’s recent death in a drowning accident, where she saved two young girls. Cami, now a busy corporate lawyer, has been frantically summoned to Cape Sanctuary by her mother, Rosemary. Lily’s glamping resort, Moongate Farm, is in danger of closing. Jon Rafferty, their neighbor’s son, is determined to get the resort off his father’s property. Cami finds herself falling in love with Cape Sanctuary and maybe even Jon, but how can Moongate Farm be saved?
There were so many things to love about this poignant story. Elements of love and loss, second chances, and slow farewells were woven into a story set in a beautiful location that made me want to visit someday.
After suffering the loss of their sister, Violet and Cami are coming home to help their mother for the summer. It's a time of digging up old wounds and reconciling with their past. But they're not the only ones with healing to do. Their elderly neighbor and his handsome son have their own issues to work out, as do Violet and her first love. And then there are Violet and Cami's divorced parents as well.
Lots of different storylines are woven together in this sweet novel that made an enjoyable afternoon read.
Thank you to RaeAnne Thayne, Harlequin Trade Publishing, and NetGalley for an advanced review copy.
I love RaeAnne Thayne's style of writing because she so often writes characters that I can easily identify with. This time I didn't quite feel that same pull to a particular character, but the setting was fantastic, the characters were well-developed and the storyline was heartwarming. The pace of the novel was quick and I found myself not wanting to put it down. Overall an enjoyable light read.
Thank you to Net Galley for the advanced copy of this book. This book had everything a romance reader is looking for. It had family relationships, loss, sadness, forgiveness, angst and happiness. I liked the side plot of dealng with dementia and how that can upend people's lives in such extreme ways. It was a wonderful all around story where you find yourself rooting for the characters to find love and happiness. This will be a great summer read when it is released and I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves reading about family relationships that need healing and finding their way back to each other.
This was another enjoyable book by this author.
Cami and Violet come home to Cape Sanctuary to help their mother with their deceased sister, Lily’s glampground.
Both are struggling with new and old romances and a few other issues.
It was a good story that kept my attention to the end.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the early copy
I will admit I have not read many RaeAnne Thayne books. This book was wonderful. I read it over a weekend and did not want to put it down until i was done. This is a story about a family with 3 kids that are separated during a divorce. Cami went to live with her dad in California and Lily and Violet (twins) went to live with their mom in Cape Sanctuary. Tragically Lily was drowned when she saved 2 children. This brought Cami to Cape Sanctuary.. Later her dad also came as they were giving an award to Lily posthumous for saving the 2 children. There were a few tears shed during this book. It has love and a little drama which I like. There is romance building with the neighbor who wants to close the glam-ground that Lily worked hard to build. The neighbor (who i cant remember his name) was estranged from his father but came back to take care of him as he has dementia. It is a Must Read summer book. I look forward to many more from RaeAnne
RaeAnne Thayne writes a story of redemption and reconciliation in this contemporary romance. She explores the results of divorce on children into their adulthood and the difficulties in the relationships of the parents and the three daughters. The death of one daughter and the grieving that draws the family back together is carefully explored Another thread in the plot involves a neighbor who is estranged from his son and is sliding into dementia. When the son arrives to deal with his father, he finds himself unwillingly attracted to one of the daughters. This well-constructed story is full of complex characters and equally complex plot twists. Strongly recommended.
I really enjoy RaeAnne Thayne's books and Summer at the Cape is yet another enjoyable, easy read.
I reached for this book after reading a heavier book and it was just what I needed - light enough to keep me engaged and with enough 'real life' for it not to be too frothy.
While I'm not sure I'd classify this as a beach read, I think it is a perfect book for summer reading.
I really enjoyed getting to know all the characters in this story - especially Cami.
Thank you NetGalley and Harlequin for an eARC copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
Reanne Thayne has done it again!! Summer at the Cape is a fantastic read. This will be the beach read of the summer. Returning back to Cape Sanctuary we meet Cami, who is coming in from LA to help her mother and her younger sister Violet. All three woman are grieving Violet’s twin sister Lily. Both sisters come home for the summer, and they may find love along the way. I laughed and cried. This book is so good.
RaeAnne Thayne’s “Summer at the Cape”, is a ‘feel good’, beach read with well developed likable characters.
RaeAnne Thayne never fails to write a story that leaves you pondering the goodness of the families, friends, and community of her imagination. Cape Sanctuary is true to it's name and gives each one exactly what they are needing to heal, love, and move forward in a different but even better direction in life. Though some are gone, their existence and absence led to events that led to the betterment of each family member portrayed.
Violet and Cami are strong and brave sisters save their journey of healing, combined with their parent's journey, is heartwarming.
Thank you NetGalley and Harlequin Trade for the ARC.
Such an absolutely wonderful story of love, of reconciliations, and of family. The touching telling of a son dealing with his father’s dementia and of a family grieving the loss of a daughter/sister is written with care and reality.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
RaeAnn Thayne's Summer at the Cape is one of the most charming books I've read. The chapters were each written from the perspective of a specific character, and I was invested in them from the first chapter through the epilogue. Divorce is always hard and when families split as the Porter family did, one daughter with Dad and twins with Mom things could not have been easy. After the death of one of the twins in a freak accident when she was saving the lives of two young girls, the family is brought together as they deal with their grief. Cami is the lawyer, Violet the special education teacher, Dad also a lawyer and Mom the operator of Wild Hearts Campground.. The story of family and community brings out old friends and introduces them to new ones awhile they also deal with a complicated estate deal surrounding Wild Hearts. From old love, to new love, to renewed love, the story is one of family, forgiveness and future.
