Oh man, some parts of this book were really good and had me rooting for the character. The drama scenes were written so well. However, I do agree with a lot of the other reviews about how heavy the content seemed to portray all of the men as being violent, extremely disrespectful and misogynistic. I think that was the main thing that kept me from rating this book higher.
Another thing that bugged me was just how long this book is. It is almost 500 pages and some parts of it were unnecessary. They didn't really add anything to the overall plot.
I did not end up reading this novel. The rating is not a reflection of the story itself, but rather an indication that other books/stories dominated my interest and reading time. Which I think is an important factor when selecting your next read.
3 women who have intuitions that help solve a town mystery. I liked that it reminded me of the Practical Magic movie. Strong feminist ideas and strong women that stand for others. They punish the men who are taking advantage of women. Liked it a lot. Thanks to Net Galley and William Morrow for this ARC.
This book was amazing! I love how female forward it was and how the men were put in their place when they thought they ruled their neighborhood.
This is very much a booster to women who are going through or have gone through their own change. It’s inevitable that every woman will go through it and they can choose to find the gifts within.
I don’t know if any men would like this story unless they are extremely open-minded and don’t get offended easily. I do recommend this book to anyone who needs to feel empowered and needs to learn their value.
This was a fun feminist read about the power of women to stand up for themselves. It was mystical and realistic, and I really enjoyed the characters and the plot. I received a free copy of this book from netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
I don't know where to start since I LOVED this book.
Its fluid narrative, interesting characters, absorbing suspense and a healthy dose of humour, fantasy and magical realism is thrown into the mix makes this book such a compelling and engaging read.
The author does a brilliant job characterizing the three women who are the main protagonists with distinctive personalities and backgrounds. Each of these characters is well-fleshed out and their backstories are diligently developed. It was a pleasure to read such well-crafted characters and a richly imagined world.
I don't want to give away anything about the story and plot. I can just say that The Change is a gripping and thought-provoking read that is sure to leave a lasting impression on readers. The author's writing is powerful and insightful, and the novel is both entertaining and intellectually stimulating.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for sending a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Tried reading this but was not able to get into it. A star rating would not be fair considering i did not actually read the book so it could potentially be a 5 star read for someone else.
Nessa, Jo, and Harriett are an unlikely trio that have come together through friendship with a common goal: understand who is killing young girls on the beautiful island where they live. Each brings a unique gift to the effort: Nessa holds to ability to see and hear those who have passed and still need their deaths avenged, Jo is the rage - as a physically fit woman's gym owner, she brings the strength and anger. Harriett is the crafty horticulturalist who can make tintures and cultivate plants to her liking and need. Together they aim to avenge the deaths of these girls and make sure those responsible pay the price for their horrible crimes.
Okay for some reason I felt like I have been reading this book FOREVER. The concept and plot were great, I just couldn't get into it so kept putting it down. The characters were interesting and unique - I loved how badass they are and empowered women. Overall, great book, just felt like it could have been slimmed down a hair. Definitely recommend for readers who like strong female characters, women empowering women, and well.... thick books :)
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read in exchange for my honest review!
Thank you NetGalley and William Morrow for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review. I was unprepared for how long this book is. It’s definitely a heavyweight and I’m not sure it couldn’t be improved by a bit of editing. There were parts I felt lost about the tangents and details that were being covered. The main plot— 3 women, who were displaying strong women power, solve some disappearances with a combination of magic realism and sleuthing. It is definitely a book unlike any I have read. While I loved the strong denial characters, it was definitely not high on my list of books this year. 3.5 stars rounded up.
Amazing read!
Very empowering read about three middle aged women coming together to fight evil.
Nessa hears the dead, Jo the protector and Harriet the (neighborhood witch find a dead body and come together to find out who she is and to protect others.
I’m so torn on this rating. Overall I feel like I didn’t really like this book. I think the woman I am is just not the woman who is the target audience for this book. It literally took me 4.5 months to get through the first 25% of the book. I kept saying it was going to be one star or a DNF, which I never do, because I felt like it was jumbled, poorly written, filled with unnecessary profanity, and just plain old weird. BUT, I’m trying to catch up on all my old ARCs right now and I forced myself to get through it as quickly as possible. Once I started getting into the mystery aspect of it, I started enjoying it a little bit and found myself wanting to know how it ended and what happened to all the girls. Ultimately, it still wasn’t the right fit of book for me, but since I enjoyed figuring out the mystery part, I am giving it an extra star than the two I originally decided upon.
Couldn’t get through this one—found it poorly written and uninteresting. I think it’s not my type of book, however, and others may enjoy it!
The Change is such a creepy, good book! It is not what I expected at all, and I love the surprises it threw at me. I highly recommend this one to friends & family, and look forward to Miller's next book.
I found this to be interesting. It was a feminist revenge story spiked up with magical realism. Three powerful women with unique abilities come together to find and bring down a serial killer when justice fails to do the job. It is not something that I would normally read but I was happy I did!
This is a longer book, but one that I find instantly grabs you from the start! The story follows 3 different women who find themselves "empowered" in different ways - Literally, via what I can only describe as something supernatural. When the three women's paths cross, they use it to investigate a teenage girl's murder, which unravels into something that none of them anticipated. This book was different than my typical thriller/suspense reads - Which I enjoyed! I'm looking forward to seeing what this author comes up with next.
This book wasn’t for me. I had to put it down and force myself to pick it back up multiple times just to get through it. I couldn’t connect with any of the characters, and the story was all over the place. It just didn’t work for me.
initial thoughts: while this book is long (almost 500 pages), the story keeps moving and doesn’t feel bogged down. while it did take a bit to get to know Jo, Harriett & Nessa, once I did, they were so great! the story did start out a bit slow, but I’m happy I pushed through.
definitely not a book you can get through quickly due to its length, but one worth picking up!
Wow wow wow. I did not expect this book to be this good. I went in blind and I am so glad that I did.
This was absolutely amazing. I ended up listening to the audio from the library and the narration was as fabulous as the writing.
The twists this story took was incredible. The strength and power of these women were something to uphold and admire. I loved the magical realism that played a huge role in the story as well.
The characters were very well developed and despite to multiple POV it was very easy to follow along. I loved having a little bit of everyone’s story. This was an incredible book and I found myself emotional at points.
This was a fabulous feminist crime novel - three middle-aged women come together and bring gifts they possess to the table, one speaks to the dead, one is strong and can channel rage to heat, and the last one is what might have been known as a witch or a healer, in tune with all the remedies and curses nature has to offer. All three of them know the world they live in to be a man‘s world even if things have already come far ghey know they‘ll never be part of the boys‘ club. When they discover a teen girl’s body stashed in a garbage bag, and see the police quickly dismissing her as a possible drug addict, they feel the need to hunt for her killer. As the women discover all they can do with their gifts, they engage in a manhunt that quickly takes a turn towards dangerous for them and their loved ones. Only their combined gifts can unravel the source of the enduring evil that’s been perpetrated and let them live free of fear. This was a fun wild ride of a world quite close to ours with just a bit of magical realism sprinkled in and it was a fabulous read !
This book was fantastic! Funny, heartfelt, mysterious, empowering, suspenseful, emotional.. I am jealous of anyone who gets to read it for the first time!
