So, political thrillers aren’t usually my forte- but I would say this was well written, great premise, nice character development. Slightly predictable and a *little* too long for MY tastes, but I commend the author for doing a great job. I could easily see this adapted for tv!

Two Nights in Lisbon is a compelling of a woman who wakes up one morning in Lisbon to find her new husband from their hotel room. She begins to worry when she can’t contact him despite calls and text messages. She reports him missing to skeptical Lisbon police detectives, the American embassy, and eventually discusses the matter with other governmental agencies and the media. The story is told in present time and flashbacks, giving insight into the woman’s past and providing understanding of the actions she takes.

The story is compelling. The writing for the first three-quarters of the book is carefully paced and draws the reader in. The dialogue is crisp and very rea, istic; one can imagine he is in the room to actually hear the conversations. The words uttered by each of the characters fits perfectly with their characters and is very believable.

My only reservation lies with the final one-quarter of the book. The conclusion of the story seemed a little forced and faster paced than the first three quarters. One part of the ending seemed a little predictable. If felt that the author just wanted to wrap up the book rather than stay with pace of the narrative.

All that said, I enjoyed the book and will read more from this author. There are few authors whose creative dialogues ring so true and believable, and which contribute so much to the story.

I really like Chris Pavone books - I've read them all - but this one wasn't my personal favorite. The initial premise intrigued me, but I found a lot of what was happening/choices characters were making too far fetched (it made more sense by the end but I was confused in the early parts of the book). Also, huge content warning for rape - it ends up being a major talking point in the book, and I was made uncomfortable by the treatment of it in the book. While well intentioned, I do not think the writing on this topic ended up being as successful as intended. That being said, I will still read anything Chris Pavone writes and if you like Pavone's work you may enjoy this!

The synopsis sounded really interesting, but the execution flat for me. The storyline seemed to ramble all over the place, and it was quite jarring at times. The characters were one-dimensional, which made it hard to root for or connect with any of them. The ending twist was lacking. This could have perhaps benefitted from a tighter edit, making it a shorter, and more focused, read.

Ariel wakes up one morning on a trip to Portugal to find her husband missing. His running gear is still there along with his wallet, watch, and phone. She checks with the hotel staff all of whom deny seeing him. She goes to the police who have nothing to offer as Ariel’s spouse has only been missing for a few hours. She doesn’t even know why they had come to Portugal other that it was for ‘business’. But it turns out Ariel’s husband isn’t the. only one keeping potentiality dangerous info from the other.

Two Nights In Lisbon is well written even though it can be easily bogged down by overwriten pages and chapters. The book really did nothing for me. I would put it down and then have to force myself to pick it up to read again. I hope it works better for you.

Overall a great mystery/thriller. Ariel accompanies her husband on a business trip to Lisbon. One night, he disappears, and Ariel is desperate to know what has happened. When she contacts investigators, the stream of events that follows leads the reader down twisty trail of who knows what.
I loved the first half of the book. The middle gets a little drawn out, but stick with it. Great ending.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Ariel and her newish husband are visiting Lisbon, a business trip for him and pleasure for her, when he suddenly disappears from their hotel overnight. Certain that something has gone wrong, she contacts various authorities and a whole chain of investigations and events is set off.

The intrigue flows fast and furious in this book and I really liked the pace and action, particularly in the first half. I found Ariel a little hard to read and relate to, but I think that's part of who the character is and the events that have shaped her life. The mysteries of what is really going on and who knows what are constants throughout the book.

I especially loved the settings - from the hilly streets of Lisbon, to posh NYC and Ariel's farm and small-town life, complete with the bookstore she owns.

Very good read!

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. This is a new to me author and I was pleasantly surprised at how engaged I was in the story. The beginning pacing and tension was fantastic but I lost interest in the messy middle. I put the book down and started another. The pull was strong though, so I did come back and finish it, I will admit that I scanned through several middle chapters.

Ariel wakes up after the first night in Portugal with her new husband to find him gone, no where to be found. She begins to investigate his disappearance and goes to the police and to the US embassy. A host of characters are introduced to help Ariel locate her husband.

It was very very #metoo which became too much for me. But was that by design by the male author?

I did enjoy the writing and I will try this author again.

Felt average at most, didn't particularly enjoy the writing nor was I able to emphasize or create much of a connection with the characters. But I did enjoy the setting, reading a story that happens in my country, in a city where I've lived for a couple of years. I also appreciate the message the story tries to convey, and I like the book's cover. But it's not one I'm going to remember much or want to come back to in the future

I enjoyed this novel of suspense. Ariel accompanies her husband on a business trip to Lisbon. The following morning he's gone and she receives a ransom note from his kidnappers. Before long she's being tailed by the Lisbon Police and CIA officers. A tense, multi-layered plot that ends with a final surprise.

Thank you NetGalley and Farrar, Straus and Giroux for the copy of this book. Based on the book’s description I was expecting a fast-paced thriller but I found it moved very slowly. So much information about Ariel and her life that was frankly not very interesting. This was a long (400 pages!) book and I didn’t like the writing. Chapters ending with a cliffhanger or unfinished sentence and then not being resolved until a whole section of the story later was annoying. All that did was make me disengage from the story. Word after word of needless explanation, like Ariel wanting to be “a person who knew how her house’s plumbing works in a general way”…then goes on to list twelve ‘related’ things she knew. And this happened so often! Such a waste of words and sentences I ended up skipping.
I also never connected to any of the characters, maybe because the only one I got to know was Ariel and there was nothing from her point of view. It was all just what she did.
I loved the main story even though it didn’t start until really late in the book. I’m glad I read the book until the end so I could find out what happened. If you want a great story and don’t care about the writing or the characters then this book is probably for you. For me I wanted more.
2.5 stars rounded up to 3.

Haven't had this much fun with a thriller in ages, and what a rip-roaring weekend read. I am such a fan of Pavone, and this latest novel really was a total winner. I n ever saw the final reveal coming. Jealousy really is a dessert best eaten cold. Going to be a terrific summer hit, and hopefully many many more to come.

Unfortunately I just couldn't get into this book and I abandoned it - not something I do very often.
The third person narrative was pretty jarring to the story and was ultimately too distracting to really get into it. A shame as the plot description looked good and everyone else seems to enjoy it.

Finished this galley of Two Nights in Lisbon by Chris Pavone. It was propulsive like one of his popular previous novels, The Expats, that I’d read years ago.
.
This novel focuses on Ariel who wakes up in Portugal without her new husband and is trying to figure out what happened to make him disappear on this business trip she’s accompanying him on.
.
This is a complicated story where everyone has something that seems off and you’re waiting to see how it fits together. It got a little convoluted in the middle where I had trouble keeping some of the law enforcement characters straight (who do they work for?!)
.
All in all, it was propulsive and kept me interested. There is some tough content in here so if you’re sensitive, consider researching some trigger warnings.
.
Thanks to @netgalley for this eARC.

This story is divided into sections covering the disappearance, kidnapping, and ransom of an American businessman. It was a fairly easy read, which as the title implies, is literally two days set in Lisbon, Portugal. The atmospheric location was part of what drew me to the story and it was beautifully written. The setting also includes the East Coast and the Hampton's. It is adult fiction with adult subject matter.
The main character is newlywed Ariel Pryce, attractive, a former actress, middle-aged mother, who now owns a small town bookstore. She has a tween age son, George, with health problems, who's very sheltered. Her hasty romance and marriage to John, a consultant, is full of secrets on both sides. Starting with both changing their names, separately, years ago. Their dark secrets unravel as the story unfolds.
The kidnapping plot was very intriguing and there were several solid characters in the various agencies involved, the CIA, the American embassy, and the local detectives. The mystery and suspense of John's disappearance has a fresh plot twist. Unfortunately, I surmised both the who and why very early on in the story.
Some of Ariel's emotional reactions and behavioral responses did not fit a middle aged,  independent, smart, business savvy woman. Her character acted more like a younger naive woman, much like her young assistant, Persephone.
The supporting characters were more interesting and much better described, such as the CIA Chief of Station Griffiths, Guido Antonucci, and his partner, Kayla. The Detectives António Moniz and Carolina Santos, the embassy's Saxby Barnes were also engaging, funny, realistic and the tension between agencies was palpable.
Really wanted to love this book, was highly anticipating reading it. Afterward, Is this the fast-paced mystery I expected or more #METOO?
This is probably petty on my part but, it kind of irks me that it's written by a man. There is simply no way any male understands or feels what it's like to endure the harassment, abuse and disparagy women have and continue to suffer through. I applaud the authors attempt, however; it fell short for me. I had not read anything by this author before, might try in the future.
Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read the advance digital copy of "Two Nights in Lisbon" by Chris Pavone, and MCD, Farrar, Straus and Giroux. These are my honest personal thoughts and opinions given voluntarily.

This book was intense. I don’t usually read mysteries, but found myself drawn into this one. The mystery of Ariel Pryce’s life is a slow burn and is revealed through flashbacks as she races to save her kidnapped new husband. As the story unravels, you can see that no one is on Ariel’s side, which makes her a character one to cheer on. The doubts of the other characters about Ariel’s story and the kidnapping made me frustrated with the “good guys” of the Lisbon police, the CIA, and the U.S. embassy. Clearly the kidnappers and the demons from Ariel’s past make for difficult characters to sympathize with, but the story’s action and flashbacks make for an interesting way to uncover the truth. This was a page turner!

Chris Pavone is a master at twisty tales and this one was great. It kept me guessing until the end. Arial Pryce, on a business trip to Lisbon with her new husband, wakes up to an empty room. Where is he? No note, no messages, this is so unlike him. She panics when her search for him fails and heads off to report him missing to the Lisbon police and embassy. Has he been kidnapped? Of course, not all is as it seems. Both Ariel and her husband have secrets in their pasts that will bubble up as she tries to raise a large random.
Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced reader copy.

I loved the book, the story was great, the characters were interesting. Very exciting and complicated. Never knew who to trust, as was the problem for the characters too! Police, CIA, embassy, lots of high tech, hard to put down until you really knew what was going on. I enjoyed it and will read more by this author. I recommend this highly.

This book comes at you hot and fast. With a weird sexual thing, that isn't a sexual thing but you aren't sure if it's a sexual thing as the opening scene. I hated it. The opening few pages alone made me want to put down the book and give up. I could possibly stretch and say that pretty much summed up this book.
I felt so lost throughout the plot. So much jumping around and then repeating scenes and information. It became too much. The flashbacks felt forced, they were way too detailed and way too long. They also occurred way too often. I was having a hard time keeping up with the main plot line, so throwing me back in time for no reason was not helpful.
I'm all for a complicated book with a large cast of characters, but this was also 'too much'. The US Embassy, the police, the CIA, the journalist .. honestly, even now I feel lost with how many groups of people were involved. In the end, why do I care about the different groups? Did it even really matter? Were all the groups necessary and did the multiple groups add to the story? From my point of view, no they did not.
The big ending twist revealed itself early in the book for me. So to be proven 'right' was a kind of let down.
The interaction with her child was exhausting and unnatural. I could expand and say all the dialogue was pretty rough.
Overall, I do think this is better than a two star book. I mean, it kept me interested enough to finish it. When it comes to recommend or to not recommend, I have to say... I would not. The plot line is too all over the place to make this a book I could feel good about recommending.
