When I talk to my daddy about his golf game, he gets pretty technical and this book felt a little like that. I've played golf and enjoy watching on TV and in person. I enjoyed learning more about the relationship between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. I learned more about the Ryder Cup, rules of tournament play, and other details of the game. After a slow start, we learned a little more about what made Tiger and Phil tick. That was a little more interesting to me. Overall, I think this was a good book but felt a lot like a summary of interviews done by other people.
If you’re a fan of golf, you need to read this book! Hey everybody, it’s Mikey, Dani’s boyfriend! She requested this book for me and was lucky enough to get an ARC! This book was awesome, and the best part for me was the little behind the scenes stories you got from Bob Harig. As a journalist in the golf world for so many years he was able to pull the curtain back a bit on the Tiger and Phil rivalry, and I enjoyed every page!
The only reason I docked a star from this insightful non-fiction was due to the many spelling errors throughout the book. Outside of that the inside look into the rivalry between Phil and Tiger was very interesting.
Thank you NetGalley, Bob Harig, and St. Martin's Press for the ARC! Get your copy at your favorite book store next month!
My husband is an avis golfer and obsessed with Tiger. I wanted to read this to have something to talk to him about because I don’t really know much about golf.
It was interesting learning about the parallels of Tiger and Phil. The author seems like he researched the topic really well and it was well written.
The chapters were a bit longer than I like, but overall this was a good story!
Thank you for an ARC for my honest review.
I really wanted to enjoy this book more but unfortunately the level of detail of various matches Tiger and Phil participated in is just boring. It’s great to watch golf but golf books that recount the whole match, just like someone trekking you, hole by hole, about their round is generally a snooze fest. There is a lot here to like but there is much that gets in the way. For the golf nut only.
This would have been interesting if it had given any new information on Tiger and Phil. For those of us who are already big golf fans, however, it did not. Book was rather repetitive, and not as entertaining as I had hoped.
If you're a golf lover (and I am) and love Phil Mickelson and/or Tiger Woods (I do)...this is a great book for you! While I think it's a little golf intensive for people without a strong like for the game, I really enjoyed reading about both of these guys - arguably the greatest golfers of all-time. I loved the author's argument that Mickelson and Woods both deserve the respect of that title for different reasons, and how he perused the question of whether or not they were both pushed to be better because the other was there to push them to new levels. This would make a great Father's Day gift for the golfer in your life!
I was lucky to receive an advance copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. My husband and myself are big fans of the PGA and we were excited to read this book about Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods. We have both read it and really enjoyed it. This is really saying a lot as my husband typically only reads about half a book and then is "done" with it and he actually finished this one! would be worth reading, and it was. I don't feel that you need to be a golf fan to enjoy this one as everyone knows Tiger Woods name and all the issues surrounding him throughout his life.
A look at two of golf's greatest golfers and their rivalry. Both Phil and Tiger emerged on the golf scene at the same time and want to do better than the other. The book focuses on the life and golf career of both. Must read for gold fans and most sports fans will enjoy it as well.
Thank you to Netgalley for an ARC
This book is for the serious golf fan. It really is for someone who loves golf, and alas I only like it.
Tiger & Phil is wonderfully well written book which is great for those of use who lived through the entire period as well as those who are more recent friends/players/admirers/fans of the great game that is golf.
We are shown the characters of both men, both the more stoic Tiger and playful Phil. We can see how both made each other better. And, in doing so made the PGA Tour more enjoyable and profitable for all.
There is no doubt Phil may have been #1 for a long time if there were no Tiger but the question remains whether Phil (and many others) would have pushed themselves as hard as they did and do.
This book needs reading to remind us this wonderful time in golf. First there was the Hogan and Nelson years. Then the Palmer and Nicklaus years. Phil and Tiger was another major era in golf. The next one has yet to identify itself. Fun to argue but not clear cut.
Read and savor this book. There is much to be had inside the covers.
Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the advance review copy.
I’m a fan of PGA golf, so I thought this book about Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods would be worth reading, and it is. So many comparisons of match play, majors, and tournament pairings between the two, along with tidbits about other famous golfers. The author begins with the idea that Tiger and Phil were rivals since their college years. He continues with lots of interviews and statistics to support his theory. This book will make a good Father’s Day gift when it is published later this Spring, or even a Mother’s Day gift, also.
Tiger and Phil is a look at the relationship and careers of two of the most well-known golfers in history. Bob Harig provides stats, behind-the-scenes moments, and well-researched info about both of their careers.
I am a golf enthusiast. When I was about 9, I picked up a golf club for the first time. I wasn't a fan of the game from the jump, but I slowly became captivated by the sport. I remember looking at Tiger and Phil growing up and I couldn't help but be fascinated by them. Two different men with different games. But they shared a passion for the game and that was apparent.
As I was reading this, I was in awe of the details. Every big moment of their career, no matter up or down was mentioned. It is cool to see the stats and see the breakdown of it all with the conversations and details from those closest to the superstars.
I give Tiger & Phil 4 stars. I think any golf fan will enjoy this book, especially if you are a fan of them. It's easy to read and gives a good insight into the lives of the biggest names in the game of golf.
Having both played and followed golf, sometimes more and sometimes less, since 1955, I was intrigued when my wife brought this forth-coming book to my attention. How could even the most casual of sports fans not know of and and have more than a passing knowledge of these legendary golfers ?
So I agreed to read and review this book about rivals, even though I had just recently finished another rivalry book (Wilt and Russell).
I had barely begun before I was swept up by both of these champions and the interweaving of their careers as they competed directly and indirectly over the decades. The author presented both men fairly and in an unbiased way, from their best to their worst sides. In doing so they became more than the one dimensional men we see on the screen. Rather, I saw them as real persons - just like myself.
Being exposed to the relationship between pros and caddies was an added bonus. The same can be said for the professional instructors most pro golfers rely on. Reading the many quotes from both caddies and instructors added a great depth to my enjoyment.
My only regret is that I didn't follow their competing careers more closely at the time.
I love golf, but I do not think I am a big enough fan for the level of detail this book provides. I grew up watching Tiger and Phil and looked forward to reading more about their rivalry and relationship. However, this book includes SO much detail it overwhelmed me from the beginning. However, I do think big golf fans (especially of these two amazing players) will enjoy this book.
This was a very interesting look at the parallel careers of these two golfing legends. The writing is clearly well-researched and well-presented by an individual who has long written about sports - golf, specifically - with a close relationship to the game and subject.
This book was definitely written by someone who enjoys facts and stats! It’s not what I was expecting, at all. I was looking forward to a reader-friendly recap of the relationship between two of golf’s greatest players and two of my all time favorite golfers. And I was looking forward to a heavy dose of the background of each telling me the inside story of what impelled them and to the peaks and valleys of their personal lives the past 25+ years and to how they intersected.
I’m sure this will be read an enjoyed by a wide range of golf enthusiasts because of the wealth of golfing history and statistics it employs.
I appreciate this ARC from NetGalley and the publisher, St. Martin's Press, in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
I received an ARC of this upcoming book through NetGalley.
This is a comprehensive and authentic account of how the careers of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson juxtaposed, written by a well-known golf reporter who has covered them for 30+ years.
The seeds of this rivalry started becoming apparent in their amateur careers, where both were phenoms. Phil is 5 years older than Tiger, so they did not compete directly against each other until they were professionals. But each of their legacies begin with incredible records as amateurs.
The book does a great job of comparing and contrasting the two. Unquestionably, Tiger's accomplishments greatly exceeded Phil's. Tiger held the #1 ranking in the world for years at a time; Phil was never ranked #1 and spent many, many weeks ranked #2 to Tiger.
The author organized this story very intelligently. While basically chronological, he takes the reader through the years in themed phases. The phases are often defined by periods of time where Tiger dominated and where Tiger was battling frequent injuries and personal difficulties.
While the focus is on the rivalry on the golf course, the author lightly touches on the personal controversies each encountered: Tiger's driving incidents, Phil's insider trading investigation.
While Phil sort of played the role of the Washington Generals to Tiger's Harlem Globetrotters, Phil enjoyed significantly more success than anyone else during the Tiger era.
Excellent book! (less)
