I really couldn’t get into this book like I wanted to do I had to put the book down until I know it’s time to pick it back up.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC digital edition.
Unfortunately, I was unable to read this in the time allotted. It remains on my “to be read” list for the future.
Lyrical and thought provoking. I could see myself sharing this title with the teen boys in my purview.
I don't think I knew what I was getting into when I selected this book. It just is a lot more dense than I was expecting or wanting. That isn't to say it's bad. It just didn't fit me as a reader. I can see how the information could be very useful and interesting to many. The content was just more than I expected.
I know very little about hip hop or rap but still found this book totally compelling. Nava infuses his genuine love of the music with a knowledge of theology to write an academic book that is totally readable. I learned not only about the history of hip hop and how it connects to religious themes, but also about theology itself. There are so many relevant examples throughout the book that it is accessible to anyone with a basic knowledge of pop culture. It started off slow, but took off right away. This would be a great book for a hip hop fan or anyone who is interested in Christian theology being applied to new contexts. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
