This small town enemies to lovers is just ok. I think they were going for a heightened comedy vibe when it was being written and edited, but it comes across as childish. Also, there are several scenes that are dicey in terms of consent and appropriateness, along with perpetuating the concept of kids teasing other kids because they like them. It's an antiquated concept to write off bullying and teasing as acceptable because it is really a showing of affection. It isn't. There were some amusing moments and the initial set up wasn't horrible, but there were too many cringey moments for me.
This was my first book by this author and it will not be my last. I will be on a mission to read more of her books. These hit all the spots. Loved it.
Overall, this one wasn't for me. Had a hard time engaging with the characters or the story overall. I wanted to like it and based on the description thought I might but the way they talked to and about each other was a bit cringey and hard to keep taking in.
This is an enemies to lovers, small town romance. Poppy and Chuck grew up together, but she never realized that his name calling and teasing was just to get her attention because he liked her. Years later, she is newly divorced and he is the local Deputy. And now we get to see how their love hate for each other plays out as adults.
This was just ok for me
I liked the basic structure of the story: childhood friends turned enemies who reunite and realize they have loved each other for most of their lives. That’s sweet. But the characters felt a bit juvenile still, despite being in their mid to late twenties.
This writing also had a lot of themes and phrases that just didn’t work for me. I see others have already given reviews that highlight the words or sentences that seemed out of place or even offensive so you can view those for specific instances. Also TW: that was literal sexual assault when they were alone behind the bar. Why was that included??
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of “a fair warning”. All opinions are my own.
I have mixed feelings about this one. It is very much a romcom, but at times it felt overdone. It is hilarious, and the enemies to lovers trope kept me chuckling. However, where it lost me was Poppy's constant blaming of other women for the downfall of her relationship with her ex-husband. It felt like some serious misplaced anger and often took me out of the storyline. If there had been a purposeful focus on Poppy's issues with her femine side and her judgement of the women around her - I think it would have made more sense.
It is a quick read, and was enjoyable but definitely not my favorite read of the year.
I was given a copy of this story to read; but thoughts and opinions are all my own. Thank you to Netgalley and Wild One Press for the chance to read this book!
This was a really great small town romance about childhood enemies to adult lovers. I love the fact that they've both been holding grudges for years and meet again to hash everything out.
While in the end I enjoyed the book quite a bit, it was not an even ride. I felt like I was missing something in Poppy and Chuck's relationship progression and some parts of the book were more enjoyable to read. I did like that the female MC was the one that was "rough around the edges" and the male MC was the one that followed the law as I feel a lot of books have it the other way around. And I did like where both characters ended up, just not how they go there.
The first part of the book was a little hard, the characters were very childish in the “pull her hair and maybe she will notice me” kinda way. But, once we got past the initial groundwork that laid out the backstory and started in telling their story now it was fun. Their banter was admittedly funny, and I could have totally done with some more run ins with the mistress. That was hilarious. I also felt like there was some character development and enjoyed that. I am actually looking forward to the next book :)
This was a cute 'haters to lovers' (not quite enemies) small-town romance with opposites attract and tension.
* Small-town romance
* opposites attract
* tension
* haters to lovers
* he gives off 'love first' vibes
I had this book on TBR for months. I started reading it in November but I wasn't drawn to it and I DNF it... I opened it again months later and struggled with read. I didn't like main heroine, she was really annoying to me, so I couldn't enjoy my read. I didn't feel the chemistry between main characters at all..
I hate to give bad grades, but this book just wasn't for me.
This book wasn't for me. I DNFed it. The book opens with in Chuck's POV and Poppy climbing up onto the bar at her bar celebrating her divorce. The way Chuck describes Poppy was just kind of ick. Maybe it gets better but this just wasn't for me
I enjoy the enemies to lovers storyline of the book. This is such a cute and spicy rom-com. It had me laughing at all the banter between them. I liked how the ending of the story, it was very sweet.
So very funny! This book made me laugh a lot, with a lot of piss-taking and jokes but also developed into something more. Ended as a very sweet romance but it didn't lose its funny!
I didn't really like the main character and found her internalized misogyny just too much for me. It read very watt-pady for me and I didn't really get the chemistry between them.
Poppy has just been through a divorce, has a bar to run and now Deputy Chuck is back in town.
He's picked on her since they were kids and she can't stand him, but he's determined to finally get the girl.
This is such a cute and spicy rom-com.
It had me laughing at all the banter between them and the biker bar scene!? Hilarious!
Poppy's family members are brilliant and I hope there's going to be books from other POVs as I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more from these characters.
Pero era un enemies to lovers one-side thing you know, my shit, kinda....
No hay character development ni nada por el estilo, cosa que la baja. El plot es muy básico y no aparece hasta el final.
En fin, nada más que decir bai..
I enjoy the enemies to lovers storyline, so I was excited when I was given the chance to read this. I'm afraid this story did not live up to my "rom-com" expectations. The main characters, Chuck and Poppy were immature and slightly annoying throughout the entire book. I wished they would have moved on from the past and focused more on the future. I would have liked more of a build up to their relationship instead of one day we hate each and the next we are madly in love. The story was cute but just lacking some substance.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC!
This was just the LOL read I needed. New to me author recommended by a friend and I loved it! Enemies to lovers with a small town vibe.
Poppy and Chuck were childhood enemies with unrequited feelings. Plenty of unnecessary teenage angst made their HEA even sweeter. Told in dual POV, I especially loved his chapters. It’s a fast, fun read and I’ll definitely be looking for more from this author.
This was a fun, breezy read - I really enjoyed Poppy and her shenanigans, and Chuck is.... quite dreamy. I giggled to myself several times, which does not happen all that often. I'll be keeping an eye out for other books by Dianna Roman!
I read an ARC of this book via NetGalley.
