'Fear wasn’t the issue. Intelligent people were afraid in dangerous situations. But could he control his fear? He needed to function despite the fear. That was the key.'
(From the book)
My second Bree-Matt thriller. I really like it ― the writing style and Bree-Matt chemistry. In fact I like the entire investigative team. The ending wasn't shocking (for me) but the execution is good. It keeps you hooked. Writing, as I said, is very engaging and brings out emotions really well.
Overall, a very interesting and engrossing read.

Dead Against Her is book 5 in the Sherrif Bree Taggert series. I binge-read the first 4 books last month and I couldn’t wait to get stuck into this latest instalment.
The book was fast-paced, full of action and I had my heart in my throat a few times with the smear campaign that had been aimed at Bree. These characters are all so well developed now they feel like family.
If you have Kindle Unlimited they are all available on there for download or purchase and with audio included on KU. I cannot recommend this series more highly.
Bree is called out on a welfare check on an elderly widow but instead, she ends up with a double homicide on her hands and it’s someone she knows. Corrupt former Deputy Eugene Oscar and his mother have been brutally murdered.
Criminal Investigator and love interest Matt Flynn is called in to help her with the investigator. But that’s not all Bree has to deal with. She is also being targeted in a smear campaign to destroy her reputation and career. Bree has to stand up and fight back for herself and her family. Todd her Deputy Chief goes missing and the race is on to find him before he becomes the next victim.
Thank you to #netgalley #montlakepublishing and @melindaleigh for the advanced copy to read.

Engaging, fast-paced, action, and suspense…
This is the fifth book in the Bree Taggert series that can be read as a stand-alone.
This book opens up to the villain’s heinous voice that immediately captures the reader’s attention, thoughts filled with hatred that has been nourished over time and born a plan of vengeance now in motion. This person’s thoughts give weight to the phrase revenge is a dish best served cold, not in the heat of the moment for it to be most effective.
Being a sheriff differs from Bree Taggert’s former position as a police detective in a large metropolis, one has to learn to work the politics and optics hold importance. Upon taking the job Bree cleaned the force of its corrupt components and one of those decisions comes back to cause her difficulties.
Taking the call by a neighbor to do a wellness check on an elderly widow what Bree discovers is a double homicide, that of the former deputy she had removed from his position and his mother. Is this case now a conflict of interest for the sheriff? Bree isn’t the type to walk away from an investigation but she might have no choice, threatening emails followed by deep fake videos posted to the internet are designed to ruin her reputation and the optics are damning. But when Bree’s chief deputy goes missing nothing will stop her from chasing the clues down with the support of Matt Flynn, a consultant investigator and the man she’s involved with (which doesn’t help the current image situation).
This intriguing book is fast-paced action and suspense from page one. There are multiple suspects and interesting twists. The heroine has to deal with simultaneous professional and personal crises. How does one fight false accusations and investigate murders? Are events connected? Bree is a strong, confident heroine whose vulnerabilities are relatable, the impact of her profession on her family situation result in understandable drama that is dealt with compassionately. Having read the previous books enabled this reader to see the evolution of the main characters over time and even if reading this book as a stand-alone are well-developed. There is a great supporting cast of characters including the canines.
An advanced reading copy was obtained from the publisher via NetGalley.

Dead Against Her is book 5 of the Bree Taggert series. When Sheriff Bree Taggert is called to do a wellness check she wasn’t expecting a double homicide. One of the victim being a former officer she recently fired for being corrupt.
While investigating what happened , she realizes there are more than a few suspect that the victim may have made enemies with, and some of his corrupt practices might be calling in their revenge.
While she is new to the Sheriff position she is making a name for herself after clearing out all the corrupt officers, but someone is also trying to ruin her reputation.
This mystery is fast paced, has many angles and the race to find her deputy who goes missing there is a lot to keep your attention. While the whole series is great I highly recommend at a minimum reading Book 4 Right Behind Her to get some of the backstory.

Bree Taggert is BACK! I love this series and I'm always thrilled to start the next book in the series. This is book 5 and I personally think they keep getting better and better! I'm wholly invested in the characters and their stories. The character development through this series has been phenomenal! I loved the case- it's harrowing and twisty. I can't wait for the next book to come out!

Outstanding beginning, middle and end to this amazing book, the 5th in the series. I love this Author’s writing. She hooks you, drags you in and keeps you suspended. Here we have a double murder and someone out to destroy Sheriff Bree Taggert’s reputation. I am a huge fan of this Author and this series. I hope Book 6 is in the works. Thanks to NetGalley, Montlake and the Author for allowing me to read and review this book.

Sheriff Bree Taggert is caught in a web of deceit in this new thriller!
Bree Taggert is not only a Sheriff, but she is now the guardian of her niece and nephew since her sister’s death. She is trying to balance her work life with her home life and sometimes it becomes a struggle.
When her ex-deputy is found dead in a double homicide, Bree soon becomes tangled in the investigation along with Matt Flynn, her investigator and boyfriend. Not only has there been a murder, but Bree is trying to figure out who is targeting her personally and she is afraid for her family. Can Bree and Matt figure out who is responsible before it is too late?
MelindaLeigh takes us through a web of deceit and lies in this thriller and it is an absolute brilliant novel. The story weaves between Bree’s professional and personal life and as a reader I felt engrossed in the story right from the beginning. The struggles she feels in her personal life adds such depth to her character and to the story. I have enjoyed each book in the series and am ready to see what comes next for Bree and her family. Thank you Montlake Publishing for a gifted copy of the book which I voluntarily reviewed. This series is one that will keep you turning pages my friends!

Love this series. This one was good, not my favorite in the series but a quick read. I love Melinda Leigh and all her books make my Crime Fiction loving heart happy.

This is the fifth instalment in Leigh’s Bree Taggert series but I read it as a stand-alone. The subject matter is explosive, as Sheriff Bree Taggert is called to a double homicide of an elderly lady and her son, former deputy Eugene Oscar who left her department after facing corruption claims. As Bree continues her investigation into this crime, it soon becomes clear, however, that someone is out to sabotage her who will stop at nothing. But they have not reckoned with Bree’s determination….
I enjoyed reading this thriller, despite some fairly clichéd sections and some minor characters that did not grip my interest and distracted a little from the pot. Thank you to NetGalley and to the publishers for this early release ARC in exchange for the honest review I have provided here.

A brutal double murder shocks Grey’s Hollow. The killer will do anything to stop the investigation, including bringing Sheriff Bree Taggert down. Can Bree figure out who the killer is before anyone else gets hurt and her reputation ruined?
With no shortage of potential suspects, this fast-paced, complex murder mystery will keep you guessing until the end. The inclusion of timely issues, like harassment, deep fakes, gender bias, and extremist groups, enhances the story.
As a fan of this series, my favorite part of this book was seeing Bree at home in Grey’s Hollow. She’s excelling as sheriff, embracing her relationship with police investigator Matt, and comfortable in her role as guardian to her niece and nephew. I can’t wait to see what is next for Bree!
Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake Publishing for the opportunity to read an early digital copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions in this voluntary review are my own.

Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC of this title. Dead Against Her by Melinda Leigh is the fifth in the Sheriff Bree Taggert books, though it can be read as a standalone. On a well-being check Bree discovers two bodies - tied up and shot, one is an old lady, the owner of the property, the other her son, Eugene Oscar, who she had forced out of the department. Working with a private consultant investigator Matt Flynn, who also happens to be her boyfriend Bree tries to get to the bottom of the killings. Bree comes under personal attack in a nasty revenge porn kind of way and has to fight to stay on the case. A solid read but the lovey dovey relationship between Matt and Bree and the constant dog sub plotting weren't really for me. A solid three stars.

I loved this book. I was hooked from the start and read it in two sittings. With plenty of twists to keep you guessing this is a brilliant page turner.
This is the first book I've read from this author but I now need to read the first 4 of this series.
Will definitely recommend to and crime genre fans.

Another solid addition to the Bree Taggert series. An enjoyable, fast read.
I’ve read the whole series and can definitely say, they should be read in order if only to have a better understanding of the characters.
Thank you #netgalley and #montlake for the eARC.

This book started off with a bang, the twists and turns of this book kept me reading. I just couldn’t guess who it was and with the other story running alongside made this book really enjoyable. The ending was brilliant. Loved this one. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

When it rains it pours. Trouble, that is, not rain. And Bree Taggert is up to her lovely neck in a passel to troubles. All right, enough with the all the tried and, in this case true, clichés. Bree has her hands full with several nasty things going on at the same time and I love how she is depending on Matt as her partner more and more. I love that their relationship is growing and that Bree is no longer hiding her feelings for him. A small part of her hard as nails persona is cracking and, even though she is still very much the woman in control she is sharing more of her burdens with Matt.
It all starts with a wellness check on an elderly woman called in by a concerned neighbor. What Sheriff Bree Taggert finds are two dead bodies. The elderly woman is dead and so is her son, former deputy Eugene Oscar, who left the department under a cloud of corruption.
During the initial investigation, Bree finds is that there is no shortage of suspects for the murders including the woman's brother, an antigovernment group - The Hudson Huntsmen, and the Sheriff herself. Facing intense scrutiny, Bree is forced to give up the investigation, but that doesn't mean she is quitting the hunt for the killer, especially when her chief deputy has gone missing and everything she holds dear is on the line.

Dead Against Her by Melinda Leigh is the 5th book in the Bree Taggart series. Although 5th in the series, you can read this as a stand-a-lone. But after reading this book you will want to read the rest of the books in the series.
Sheriff Bree Taggart is a great character trying to balance her job, raising a family (her niece and nephew) and her new relationship will Matt Flynn. Now, she has to solve the murder of her former, corrupt deputy she recently fired. But nothing is ever easy.
There are multiple layers to this book. There is a complication due to her past working relationship with the murder victim, a smear campaign that affects her family and her chief deputy goes missing.
This is a fast-paced can’t put down book that I thoroughly enjoyed. I will go back and read the first four books in the series.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This one wasn't bad and it wasn't exceptionally amazing either. But it was a good enough thriller that it kept my attention and had me guessing until the very end. I would recommend it for anyone looking for a quick, suspenseful, and entertaining read.
Thank you NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion and review.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC.
First publication I've read by this author.
Very decent read that kept me entertained all the way through.
Instantly likeable main characters and good story also.
Look forward to reading more by this author.

A very easy to read well written tale.
Excellent character descriptions major and minor. The story runs along at a breakneck pace.I read it in one sitting.
A compulsive read. .

This was my first time meeting Bree, now the sheriff and not popular with everyone in town. The discovery of a body, following a welfare check called in by a neighbour, and the subsequent questioning of the townsfolk results in the targeting of Bree in a hate campaign designed to destroy her and to distract from the truth of what is going on in town.
You can almost hear the duelling banjos at several points in the book as the fighting and skullduggery rises and rises and the body count threatens to increase again!
