It's hard to believe that this book won an award with punctuation, grammatical, and capitalization errors. On a kindle it is too difficult to read. Font is big, small, black, and grey even when font size is adjusted. Formatting needs to be fixed and editing is essential before publishing.
Soomi's sweater is a lovely story about Soomi a child who wears a sweater made by her mom to school. She accidentally makes a hole in the sweater than gets larger over the day. While it upsets Soomi that her favorite sweater is now broken, Soomi's mother helps mend the sweater. It's an endearing story with beautiful illustrations, highly recommend.
Thank you to NetGalley and Clavis Publishing for the opportunity to read an e-ARC and share my thoughts in a review. The illustrations are sweet and darling, bringing this text to life in a joyful way. I love the message about patience, and maybe wanting to grow up before it's time. At first, it's a nice tale about a beloved sweater, but then great themes emerge about making issues bigger and how to solve mistakes.
Soomi's new sweater arrives, but it doesn't quite fit. Like all children, Soomi has trouble waiting, so her mom turns up the sleeves and hems it so it will fit. She can't wait until se can wear it to school and show her friends. Unfortunately, she gets the sleeve caught in the zipper before she even gets her jacket off she has a hole in the sleeve. Her friends try to fix it for her, but they end up making matters worse. Luckily, her mom knows what to do and repairs the seater in a most creative way. This is a sweet book about a young girl learning a bit about about patience, friendship and love. This was a cute story with wonderful illustrations. This book won Clavis' Key Colors competition for artistic, literary and child-oriented qualities of the work.
Lovely illustrations accompany a sweet story. The use of band-aids and glue to "fix" Soomi's sweater when she rips it is an especially heartwarming and humorous moment that adults and children alike will love. Will definitely be recommending to my library kids!
We’ve all been there . . . wanting something we can’t have yet. And the waiting is hard. But as adults, we’ve learned to wait. Usually. The thing is, for kids that waiting is so much harder. Too hard, really. Which is why Soomi just HAS to wear the sweater she loves that’s far too big for her. But of course, with wanting comes disaster. A small pull turns to a big hole, and it turns out that glue alone can’t cover it up.
Soomi’s Sweater by Susie Oh is a beautiful story about patience, and learning to wait for things, even when we don’t want to. I read this one aloud to my four-year-old who immediately demanded that I read it again, and I can’t blame him. Because who among us can’t relate to that thing we’ve dreamed of being ruined and the joy that comes with finding a way to not only fix it, but make it better than ever before?
This simple, sweet story has the most adorable illustrations. In fact, it was a Silver medal winner of the 2020 Key Colors Illustrators Competition (which makes me a little curious about the Gold winner since I love these so much.) 🤓
The story is perfect for younger ages (think birth to 5) as it explores little kiddo emotions: excitement over a new sweater, frustration when it snags and unravels, friends' urges to help, a meltdown of disappointment, etc. I could see reaching for this one again and again during storytime.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the electronic copy of this adorable book. This cute book is about problem solving and learning how to fix mistakes. It’s a perfect read aloud for the youngest readers.
Wonderful illustrations. Very cute as well as hilarious book. Kid loved the story and read it twice. Resourceful mom.
This is a very sweet book about a new sweater that gets ripped and repaired. This teaches concepts of understanding and also patience, and opens the door for further discussions. I love the illustrations! Recommended!
Clear, simple illustrations and a good story for young preschoolers who might struggle with a loved item being broken. Easy enough for young toddlers to grasp, but enough depth for older reader's to have good discussions about with their caregiver. A good addition to most library collections, but especially libraries that focus more on daily routine/activity picture books.
This is a short and sweet picture book, but for me the illustrations are far superior to the story line. Susie Oh's drawings have captured the soft, maternal feelings that I know so well from having raised two daughters of my own. I could feel the excitement from Soomi when she received a new sweater, obviously a gift, but we don't find out who sent it to her. That would have been a nice detail to know.
As a long-time language arts teacher, I can't help but search for theme and moral as I read a new piece of literature. This is where my struggle with Soomi's Sweater started. What was the message? As I read, I kept waiting for it. As I scrolled past the last page, I wondered what Susie Oh really wanted me to take away from this book. Is it the special nature of a treasured gift? Is it not being able to wait for something to come, as in Soomi growing into the sweater? Is it that accidents happen and sometimes things just go wrong? Or, as the last few pages seem to indicate, is it that little girls have to run home to mommy to make things right?
This genteel story is beautifully illustrated, but the story left me wanting more, even from a children's picture book. Give it a read and decide for yourself, and while you are at it, revel in the beauty of Susie Oh's illustrations of Soomi and her mom.
Very cute! Loved the little story and the pictures were adorable. As a knitter, I might have preferred mum fixing the sweater a different way, but if Soomi's happy with her special sweater then that is good enough for me
This is an adorable book I'd buy for my future children's bookshelf. The message is nice and the fact that the main character is asian but the story isn't about her identity of being asian makes it even better.
Soomi has just received her new sweater. It is beautiful and she is very proud of her new sweater. When it unravels at school, she becomes very upset. Her mother saves the day by repairing her sweater and making it a special sweater.
The colorful illustrations and a little girls favorite sweater. How can you go wrong. It is a good day when a bad day turns good. Moms who are heroes are the best!
A special thank you to Clavis Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
This picture book followed Soomi, who gets a new sweater that she’s really excited about and wears it to school.
This was short and sweet and I enjoyed reading it! Soomi’s friends were cute and tried to be helpful when her sweater ripped. This would be a simple story good for really young kids to understand.

A heartwarming read about little Soomi, who is excited to wear her new sweater to school... only for disaster to ensue! The story is subtle but cute. I loved the underlying lessons about listening to your parents, not rushing to grow up and how things can always be fixed after they are broken.
As a knitting grandma I was expecting a different story. But this one was even better! It is a story that teaches that different ways are needed to fix a mistake and that no mistake is so awful that it can't be repaired. Important lesson for any age! The illustrations are simple and colorful while the language is also perfect for ESL. Excellent!
I requested and received a free temporary ebook from Clavis Publishing via NetGalley. Thank you!
I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I can imagine this book being a crowd- pleaser board book- delightful and pastel- coloured illustrations, simple storyline and a sweet ending.
Susie Oh's heart-warming debut book stars an adorable little girl named Soomi. A new sweater arrives in a box wrapped in soft, crinkly paper. When Soomi tries it on it's way too big for her and her Mom says it will fit after Soomi grows taller.
Soomi can't wait to grow bigger so she begs to wear her sweater right now! Her mom gives into her wishes and adjusts the sweater into one that's now tailor-made for her determined little girl. Soomi is over-the-moon happy.
Her daughter can't wait to get to school and show her friends her beautiful sweater. When she arrives there she rushes to remove her coat and unfortunately snags the sleeve and a hole ensues! Oh noooooo!
Soomies friends try to help her fix the hole in ways that only kids can...but the hole persists. Poor Soomi. Is her sweater ruined forever or can mom perhaps solve the problem?
This sweet simple story is about patience, resilience, problem solving, ingenuity and understanding. The illustrations are kid-friendly, inclusive and expressive. I highly recommend this book!
