Gordon Williamson is the author of more than 50 books on military history. Hitler’s Navy: The Kriegsmarine in World War II was published last month.

I received an ARC of this book through https://www.netgalley.com with the expectation of delivering a fair and honest review. I categorize this book as ‘G’. The book in a comprehensive look at the ships of Hitler’s Navy from the Tirpitz thru midget submarines.

As expected, the well known ships of the Kriegsmarine are all included: Bismark, Tirpitz, Admiral Graf Spee, Scharnhorst, and Gneisenau. But this book goes beyond those familiar vessels. The author systematically goes through all of Germany’s capital ships. In addition, he covers the cruisers, auxiliary cruisers, U-Boats, E-Boats, minesweepers, and a variety of small craft.

The book contains the complete history of several vessels. The specifications of many ships are included. For the smaller vessels, their class specifications are given are included.

I spent 7.5 hours reading this 507-page WWII history. It was more of an interesting rather than an entertaining read. It is not an easy reading book, but it is a detailed reference for all things Kriegsmarine. I give this book a rating of 3 out of 5.

An well written and documented book. The author not only provides the facts and figures, but stories about the ships and what happened to them during the war. A great read and one for the naval enthusiast.
