When I was given the opportunity to read this book prior to it release I knew I had to start it ASAP. I’m such a huge fan of Beth O’Leary’s previous books i couldn’t wait to read this one.
When I first read the synopsis of this book I instantly thought of the movie John Tucker Must Die and was like will it be like that?. I also googled the movie and seen it was released when I was 16. Where does the time go?
I’ve read all of Beth O’Learys previous books and my favourite is The Switch and that seem to be the general consensus between my friends that have read her books and of course it’s my Mam’s fave too.
The No Show was one my most anticipated read for this year and it’s instantly up there with The Switch as a fave now. When I started the book I knew I wasn’t going to be Team Joseph Carter. Honestly it did take me a while to get into this book and I mentioned that to my friend while I was reading it but I ended up thoroughly enjoying it. I found Siobhan, Jane and Miranda to be such relatable characters and I know alot of readers of this book will see a part of them in each one. My thoughts on certain aspects of the book definitely changed. The No Show includes themes and issues that are written about really well and are so relevant.
I definitely don’t want to say too much about The No Show as I don’t want to ruin it on anyone as I know so many people can’t wait to read it. I felt so many emotions reading this book it 100% floored me in some parts and if you’re a fan of Beth O’Leary’s other books you’ll love this one.
Thanks so much to Quercus Books for giving me the opportunity to read The No show prior to it’s release on the 12th April.
The No Show is as fantastic and may even be better than The Flatshare.
I absolutely loved this story of three women falling in love - and then when the twist came, it challenged everything I’d thought.
Clever, cute and charming from start to finish, keep some tissues handy.
I am certain in the fact that anything Beth O'Leary writes I will buy before even reading the blurb.
The No-Show is O'Leary's fourth book and you can see the depth that is being added as more books are written. The No-Show centres on three females, all stood up for a Valentines date. As you read through the book and become immersed in the story things do start to be pieced together however nothing prepared me for that ending. As soon as I finished I had to withold temptation to start from the beginning again so that I could read it with the knowledge that comes with finishing it.
A wonderful, character driven tale that is in equal parts relatable, heartbraking and heartwarming. A book I've thought of long since finishing and will definitely re-read in the not too distant future.
Thanks to Quercus and Netgalley for an early review copy of this book in return for an honest review.
This is a very difficult book to review without spoilers! It has 3 intricate stories going through it and I can only imagine how difficult the editing process was.
A well written emotional, funny tale that appealed to me very much - Beth O'Leary is definitely a go to author for me now.
Another fantastic read by Beth O'Leary! I've loved her books so far and this one felt a little slower and too predictable to begin with... the characters are well formed and believable but it felt like it had been done before until the first twist! Fantastic! From that point on, I couldn't put the book down!
The stories interweave perfectly, it feels so real and yet is so beyond what I'd imagined could have happened! O'Leary has such a clever way of writing, her novels feel so easy to read but have got so many layers of story happening within them. If you were a fan of The Flat Share or her others, you should definitely read this! Brilliant!
Brilliant contemporary fiction, perfect escapism. I love Beth O'Leary's books, they always hit the spot!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for providing an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I loved The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary and was so happy that this book felt as good as that one. Very hard to talk about the book in many ways as it would be so easy to spoil the plot.
The premise of three women being stood up (on Valentines Day) by the same guy was a great hook and while I was a little unsure as to what they saw in Joseph Carter I loved the way we learned more about him and Siobhan, Miranda and Jane.
Although this is likely to be dismissed as chicklit/romcom there is a lot more to it than that and I think that it will be a book that has a lot to offer for reading groups - I know I want to talk about it with someone else who's already finished it!
Beth has done it again…. Masterfully written, this novel will reel you in and hold you enthralled as the layers of story are revealed. Highly recommended. A perfectly paced romance and beautifully observed story... I really did race through it.
Beth joins my small list of very reliable romcom authors who always deliver - clever, funny repartee. engaging characters, charming story, hidden depths. She has a gift for creating real, believable personalities that you want to stand behind.
Three woman have been stood up on separate dates and the only thing in common is Joseph Carter. Siobhan is sexy, independent and successful. She is a commitment phobic but there is chemistry that she cant deny or let go of. Miranda is fun, down-to-earth and feisty. She knows what she wants and while she really likes Joseph she feels he is hiding something. Jane is hiding from a past trauma but she befriends Joseph over a common love of books, and thinks she might be developing feelings. And Joseph - he seems lovely, perfect - but something is not quite right.
On one level, the book is light and funny, covering the perils and frustrations of dating. But on another level it delves into our insecurities, past traumas and all the other things we bring into a relationship. Its a wonder we can fall in love at all with all the baggage we keep. A thoughtful, clever, entertaining and above all romantic read.
You know that feeling when a twist catches you completely off guard, so you just stare at the book? And then you have to rethink every interaction up until that point in the book?
If you like that, then this book is for you. Beth O'Leary is one of my auto-buy authors, she writes amazing characters who are so real and who will absolutely get under your skin. And she writes stories that do just the same. There's always a romantic element, but there's also so much more depth to her books.
This one is about three women who have all been stood up by the same man, Joseph Carter. And obviously we hate him, because he's a bit of an arsehole, isn't he? Isn't he? Well, you'll just have to read the book to find out!
I promise it will make you laugh and cry, it is both hopeful and heartbreaking, and I want to read it again immediately.
I was lucky enough to receive an eARC from @netgalley and @quercusbooks, and they couldn't stop me raving about this book if they tried.
I love Beth O Leary and get so excited when I see she has a new book coming out. I think the no-show is her best one yet.
Three women, three dates, one missing man.
Siobhan, Miranda and Jane are all in love with the mysterious Jospeh Carter but all three know he's hiding something from them. You'll never guess what.
This book was the cutest love story with some epic twists I didnt see coming.
Five gloriously sweet stars from me.
I love Beth O'Leary. I will read anything she writes.
The No Show kept me on my toes. I did not see the twist coming, which I usually do, so I loved that! I loved all of the characters but being Irish I have a particular soft spot for Siobhan.
I felt every emotion reading this book. I was annoyed at Joseph for stringing along three women and for giving horrible excuses for standing them up on Valentines day. Despite this I also found him quite endearing and I could see why these three amazing women fell in love with him. I was bracing myself for the heartbreak that would eventually come but was completely shocked by twist and use of timeline.
I will definitely be recommending it to everyone I meet and pre-ordering Beth O'Leary's next book.
I adore Beth O’Leary. There is a quality to her writing that just captivates you, and her books are just an utter joy to read and as per usual I am left devastated that it is finished.
Beth O’Leary has an amazing talent at writing loveable characters. In each of her books I have related to what her characters have gone through, seen myself in certain traits, or just been dying to become friends with them. This book was no different. Each of the three women we meet in this book are memorable. Siobhán is ambitious, work oriented, and passionate. Miranda is kind, funny, and a tree surgeon! Jane is a bookworm, shy, and secluded. Each one is dating the same man…..We quickly learn that each woman has her own struggles, and the book does delve into some hard topics throughout the book, but it is always handled with care.
This book will have you thinking you’ve worked out the entire plot, I was very confident for a majority. I would recommend not reading reviews before reading as I built up the twist in my head so then when it did happen it was slightly anti-climatic, but that was entirely my own fault.
This book is one that I know I will reread many times and one that I heartily recommend. You will experience a rollercoaster of emotions throughout this book, and it will leave you completely heartbroken at times.
What a brilliantly clever and joyous book from Beth O'Leary. Full of her trademark writing style and characters which you really do care about. Twists and turns in the plot too and a fabulously deep and emotional story.
On Valentine's Day, three women are left waiting for a man to turn up.
Siobhan Kelly is meeting Joseph for breakfast, a change as they usually only meet late at night in her hotel room. However, he suggested this date so maybe they're seeing a change in their relationship.
Miranda Rosso's finished the first day of her new job and left to meet her boyfriend Carter for lunch. They've been dating for five months and things seem to now be getting serious.
Jane Miller had hoped her friend Joseph Carter would help her out by posing as her fake boyfriend for a colleague's engagement party. He promised he'd be there.
So, where is Joseph Carter?
O'Leary just understands people. Every character she creates is nuanced and layered but always avoids the tired gimmicks and clichés. They all seem dynamic and new but also exactly like people you've met before. As this book follows the viewpoints of the three women, you're introduced to so many people in their lives and flows smoothly between them all.
The plotting of this story is easy to follow yet amazingly complex. For much of it, you are left unsure as to the end goal; you've no idea where the story's going, but you're having a good time with it. Then, one simple line changes how you've viewed the entire story thus far and it's impossible to put down. You have to know the ending. The start is a little slow but there's such a payoff in the latter half as a result of that build-up.
I gasped, sighed and 'aww-ed' so many times whilst reading this. I didn't think it was quite as funny as some of her other writing but the subject matters explored required the use of a quieter tone so that makes sense.
This book deserves more said about it but I love that it's currently settled in my mind and showing no sign of leaving, and I think that's all I can manage.
The minute i was approved to read the no show I literally squealed, I love @betholearyauthor writing , and the fact u had wished for it on @netgalley and my wish was granted, I could have cried.
This was the perfect book for my loved up Feb reads, and a great read, all my expectations were met and more.
One thing Beth O'Leary does well is writes relatable but loveable characters and this was no different. I did the quiz that said I would be like Jane... and can see that jane is my soul sister. My heart was broken and then re-peiced together. I honestly loved this book and will probably buy it for friends when it comes out!
I love the lay out of the book with the split perspective, I love the plot and the relationships and I love the sensitivity Beth writes with. I will be gushing about this book for weeks so please go read it and gush with me.
Also where on earth is the film/TV series deal? I need to see these books come to life!
What a gorgeous book! Beth O’Leary does it again, bringing together the stories of three women and the one man who brings them all together on one date - Valentine’s Day. I sped through this novel, devouring it and wanting to know what was going to happen next to Miranda, Siobhan and Jane. Would thoroughly recommend for an easy, gentle read that touched some hard topics around grief, loss and love.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for granting my wish!
This book will make you laugh, cry and everything in-between. Who is this man who stood up three women on Valentines day? Is he a cad?. I thought I knew the answer but the truth is very different. This such a great story I couldn't put it down.
The No-Show has delivered everything that I could want and more. From the premise of 3 women, 3 dates, and 1 missing man, all the way through to that absolute ripper of an ending! I care so much about all of these characters and feel like I have known them for years. I actually had to put it down for a minute just to gasp as I pieced the different strands of the story together.
A wonderfully written book, telling multiple love stories in parallel, and bringing the characters entirely and brilliantly to life.
I can never give anything Beth O'Leary writes anything but 5 stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
Valentine's Day does not go well for Miranda, Siobhan and Jane when they are all stood up. As their stories unfold it becomes clear they were all stood up by Joseph Carter. Joseph appears as the perfect man for each of them, but with a tendency to be a bit late and disorganised. But that can be forgiven right?
After all Siobhan doesn't want anything serious other than a monthly hotel hook up as she's trying to stop herself falling in love with Joseph anyway. Jane only wants Joseph as a friend as she sees herself as too damaged to try anything more desipte her growing feelings. Miranda however is girlfriend material and wants Joseph and a serious relationship and gets deeply suspicious when he isn't entirely open with her.
This book cleverly reels you in as you want to hate Joseph, then you want to understand what's going on and by then you're invested in each character's life. Why is Jane so secretive about her past? Why can't Siobhan admit she loves Joseph? Will Miranda discover the truth? Thoroughly recommend this.
