What a great send off to an amazing series! I was a little surprised at how happily ever after the ending was, because the whole series is a little dark, but after spending so much time with the characters, I wasn't disappointed. Congrats Jenn Lyons, on a fantastic book and just a spectacular series.
The final installment in the Chorus of Dragons series, The Discord of Gods was a thrilling end. I appreciate that the author thoroughly wrapped up the story line, but still left room for more novellas. A classic, thrilling high fantasy novel that is the epitome of what morally gray means, The blurred lines between good and evil, and of course, DRAGONS! Dragons make everything better. I'm completely satisfied with the series, but I really hope there's more coming! Companions and spin-offs welcome!
As the finale to the Chorus of Dragons series, Jen Lyons' The Discord of Gods wraps up an intriguing and far-reaching plot. Not gonna lie- I adore this series. I had hoped that one of my favourite characters would find a measure of redemption. In fact, I used his name for two characters I created for Bravo Fleet, a Star Trek writing group. The longest running one in fact! Alas, it was not to be.
The world-building showcases a creative mind, full of future potential. I cannot wait to read something new by Lyons. She paints a breathtaking, terrifying reality with her words, one filled with demons, dragons, deities, and their titanic conflicts. The intricate structure of the narrative might feel overwhelming to some readers, with its multiple plot points and simultaneous storylines. However, I found that this complexity gives the plot richness and depth.
Overall, The Discord of Gods by Jenn Lyons comes as a captivating read for fans of fantasy. Highly recommended!
****Many thanks to Netgalley and MacMillan-Tor/Forge for providing an egalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
A satisfying end to the series. One of the great fantasy series of all time. I wish now that it's finished more people will pick this up when they are looking for epic fantasy. So many great characters, journeys, and representation. I didn't want it to end.
Discord of the Gods, the fifth book in the A Chorus of Dragons series by Jenn Lyons, is a truly thrilling and satisfying conclusion to this epic tale. Lyons expertly weaves together multiple plot threads and complex characters, leaving readers on the edge of their seats until the very end. With intricate magical systems, expansive world-building, and beautifully inclusive queer-norm characters, this series is truly in a high fantasy league of its own.
While some have compared Lyons to other fantasy greats such as Sanderson and Rothfuss, she has proven herself to be a master storyteller in her own right. Throughout all five books, she has created a rich and immersive world that feels both real and fantastical. Her characters are complex and multi-dimensional, with their growth and relationships at the heart of the series. From Kihrin's journey of self-discovery to the transformation of characters like Senera and Relos Var, Lyons' writing is simply amazing when it comes to character development.
As a fan of this series, I was over the moon to receive an ARC of Discord of the Gods, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint! Lyons fearlessly plays with time, reincarnations, and magic to create a thrilling and unforgettable conclusion to this epic tale. I was left wanting more and can only hope that Lyons returns to this world one day to tell more stories.
If you're a fan of fantasy, LGBTQ+ representation in fantasy, or simply a stunning epic tale, then you simply must read the A Chorus of Dragons series. With Discord of the Gods as its thrilling conclusion, this series is a must-read for any fantasy fan out there.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for granting me free access to the advanced digital copy of this book.
This series is going into the hall of fame for ALL TIME FAVORITE! This conclusion could not have been better. I loved every second of it. Jenn Lyons is an incredible artist and I will read anything of hers forevermore!
Thank you Tor books for my copy of this title!
.
Will definitely be posting reviews when I have finished but I already recommend this to everyone who loves fantasy!
I can’t express enough how much I loved this book. I ended up with the audio version because I love the way the narrators make this story come alive. It’s a bitter sweet ending to this series. This is a re read for me.
A world I really didn't want to say goodbye to.
Tensions from the previous book continue right in this book. The usual format that we found in the first book of past to current time isn't very prevalent here. We follow a wide range of characters, and while I was happy to see these characters progress I feel as if there was not enough time dedicated to each character as there was in the previous books. While Kihrin was the main character, I felt like he was barely there throughout the story. Some character stories were left open-ended which left me with so many questions making me wish they were tied up (even if it was in a footnote). The antagonist isn't merely a shadow anymore as we learn more of the history that has affected them.
The conclusion was epic as it wasn't something I imagined, but I'm left feeling a bit unsatisfied. I can't help but wish there was just a bit more. It's sad to say goodbye to these characters, but I can only imagine easy tidings for them as they all learn to navigate their new changed world.
What an ending that has completely solidified this as one of my favorite series of all time. Do I wish I could have spent more time with my favorite characters, yes but I also read the last 250 pages in a 24 hour period, which I never do so honestly what more can I ask for from a climatic finish. I cannot wait to re-read this one day. Also for those who prefer the unique narrative frameworks this series has this one does not have one.
I got this book on net galley because the description was so captivating. I didn't realize that it was part of a series. But jokes on me because it took me on such a wild ride, catching up on the rest of this wonderful story. Would certainly recommend.
This is absolutely one of my favourite series and I was fascinated to see how Jenn Lyons would bring things to a close. The simple answer is, expertly. This is a complicated and intricate world with a vast cast of characters, and yet Lyons has fashioned a conclusion in which everyone had a part to play that made sense for the plot and their own motivations. The end game aspect of the plot was top notch and the narrative itself was excellently told, with the usual wry tone and funny footnotes that have been such a key part of the series. Overall, I would say that this is honestly one of the best and most satisfying series conclusions I have read in a long time and I cannot wait to see what Jenn Lyons will offer us next.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.
In Discord of the Gods, it’s crunch time for Kihrin and his friends. The fate of the world literally hangs in the balance. Will Kihrin be able to pull off his greatest con or will Relos Var prove to be once again one step ahead ?
The Chorus of Dragons series is one of my absolute fav series and deserves a lot more attention in my opinion. If you enjoy epic fantasy with a good mix of action and romance, polyamorous relationship and fantastic LGBTQ rep this is a great series for you.
When it was time to pick up Discord of the Gods, I have to admit I was worried about how Jenn Lyons would be able to wrap up all the different storylines. However, I was blown away by how well the ending turned out. It was so classic Kihrin and at the same time showed how much he has grown over the course of the story. I also found it helpful that the events of the entire series were summarized at the beginning of the story so that the reader was up to speed as it can be hard to keep track of everything if you are not reading the books back to back.
Furthermore, the linear storyline as opposed to the flashback/ flash forward of the rest of the series made this one a bit easier to follow and therefore harder to put down. And as always the footnote commentary was highly entertaining to read. There is nothing about this book that I wish had been done differently. I’m hoping that author goes back to this world at some point as I’m sad to have to say goodbye to these characters
Jenn Lyons is a author I recommend to everyone I can't keep Ruin of Kings on the shelf! I cannot understand why this series doesn't receive the Hype it deserves as its honestly some of the best fantasy I have ever read!
The Discord of the Gods is the final book in the Chorus of Dragons series and it did not disappoint! It was incredibly intense as we finally come to the conclusion of this wildly complicated, chaotic and amazing series.
Khirin, Teraeth and Janel are wonderful as usual and I really enjoyed reading how their relationship has developed and solidified. I wish we got more page time -- I would have loved just one whole chapter where they do nothing but be together -- but hopefully Lyons will release a short story or novella at some stage about them.
The plot was a little slow at the beginning but very quickly picks up the pace and I was hooked. This book is VERY complicated based on the sheer amount of characters and how many of them are reincarnated. It's quite difficult to keep track of them all but Lyons is a very skilled writer and assists the reader quite a lot in understanding all the amount of characters and how they relate to each other.
I was quite satisfied with the ending and hope that we come back to this world at some stage!
Thank you for this amazing conclusion.
I’ve loved every minute of this series.
Ruin of kings is a must read fantasy series.
I was so excited to read the end of the serie. Plots twists finally coming to fruition for both Relos Var and Xaltorath - enacting their final plans to try and destroy the world. It is up to Kihrin, Janel, Tereath and co to try and save everyone without losing their humanity in the process. Just as chaotic, epic and satisfying as its predecessors in the series this is a finale that will not let you down!
The series was really good, definitely one I suggest to my friends. I love getting back into the world each time I pick up the series. The writing is good, and sometimes there is a lot of information, but it comes together eventually. Out of all 5 books I think this is the one I just could not put down, non-stop!
What an ending to a series!
I have absolutely adored each book in this series and this book was no different. While I don't think this is the most significantly perfect book on its own, I do think that it wrapped up this 5 book series beautifully.
I can't say much about the plot of this book without spoiling the rest of the series, so if you're interested in plot specific details you should check out reviews for earlier books in this series, for example my review for the first book The Ruin of Kings https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXb1w6E3MU0 or my Should You Read This Series video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_j13yPskBmM&t=2s. But suffice it to say that this book reads very much like the endgame of a complicated magical problem with a bad guy threatening to destroy the world (subsequently making himself a god), with a heist-like feel to fix the world before the bad guy destroys it.
Structurally speaking, this book is the most straight-forward in the series, with the narrative plot running forward in one timeline only, and with all the integrated POVs that have been introduced up to this point in the series. We are still gifted with the fabulous addition of footnotes by our 2 narrators, who get a bit chatty in the footnotes but in the best way possible. The beginning of the book presents the remaining problem with our MC Kihrin outlining his plan to save the world as if he is pulling off the biggest heist, and the rest of the "group" who became solidified in the previous book, are all splitting up to do their parts. And the rollout of this plan, its ups and downs, mishaps, triumphs, coups, and redirects make up the rest of the book.
While so much in this book was right and good and wonderful, there were a couple minor downfalls. At this point we have quite a few POVs who were all playing important parts in the "game plan to save the world" and were scattered in different locations throughout the world. Because of this, it did mean that we spent what felt like a very small amount of time with our OG-MC Kihrin and, more distressingly, because of how the group was divvied up to solve problems there were so few scenes with the best throuple ever - so that was sad. I will also say that there is an element of the magic that has allowed me to keep all my favourite people throughout the series, but in the finale when the stakes felt like they were so high, this same magical element somehow made some parts of the ending a little too convenient or a little too tidy for a series of this scale with this many characters involved.
But overall, loved it. Absolutely would recommend this series.
I can’t believe this series is officially over. It was such a wild ride, and I enjoyed every single book, but this last one might just be my favourite. While some of the previous books felt just a little to long and drawn out to me, this one was just perfect. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.
Let’s talk plot for a second: This was such a great end for this series, and the way some of the plot points and characters from as far back as the first book came back into play made this conclusion feel incredibly satisfying. There was maybe on or two little things that I’d have liked to explore a bit more (just some questions I still had about the worldbuilding and such, but I’m honestly not entirely sure if they were explained at some point and I simply forgot, because there is just a lot of stuff in these books), the ending did feel a little quick, but pretty much everything else was wrapped up in a really satisfying conclusion.
And don’t get me started on the characters, because I love ever single one of them. They all seemed to grow so much over the course of this series and slowly got to know each other, which made it so satisfying to finally see them all working together in this last book. I absolutely love having a huge cast of characters like this, and it’s so rare that I actually like and care about all of them, but Jenn Lyons definitely pulled that off. I mean it, every single character in this book is so unique and interesting, I could sit hear and talk about them for hours, which made me even more scared what the author would do to them in this final book.
So, if you hadn’t gathered that at this point, I absolutely adored this book and this entire series and I absolutely recommend it to anyone who’s even slightly interested in the fantasy genre. And even if you aren’t maybe you still want to give it a try, you’ll not regret it. I can’t wait to see what Jenn Lyons will come up with next, because I just know it’ll be absolutely amazing, and I’ll now go and reread all my favourite parts of this book series whilst mourning that it’s over.
