I think because I am older, a lot of the ideas were things I already knew. It was written very well and not judgy at all.
Thank you Netgalley for letting me read and review this book. Go Gently is a guide for sustainable living at home. There are easy steps towards reducing our environmental impact. I liked the writing style and learning about how Bonnie Wright cares about the environment.
Mostly common sense tips and things I've heard/read/known before, but a few new ideas - and I really appreciate Wright's nonjudgmental tone. I think this would be a great book for young people or those who are just learning about environmentalism and sustainability, and what they can do to help.
As a huge Harry Potter nerd, I was really excited to give Go Gently a read and I wasn’t disappointed! It’s always nice when people that you enjoy watching in media share similar world views as you! Go Gently was an immersive look at ways that we can make changes and take steps towards changing our world in meaningful ways. I loved how Bonnie shared information from experts instead of pretending that she, herself, was an expert in the field. The pictures were beautiful and the whole book tackled sad and depressing realities with an air of hopefulness and empowerment! A great read!
I highly enjoyed this book and even ordered a copy to keep on my bookshelf. I love reading about actors I grew up with and their personal thoughts.
I was approved too late to read this before it was archived. Unfortunate because I was looking forward to reading it.
I wanted to read this book as I’m starting to garden more often and I’m thinking about the environment and climate more than ever. This book is an at home guide to how you can make changes in the world directly around you and help the environment at the same time. The first section of this book is an introduction to wider environmental and climate issues. It has interview with activists and scientists and each section has actionable steps for us to take. Section two is about what you can do within your own home. Then we have the recipes. There aren’t many since this isn’t a cookbook, but she includes recipes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. As well as some for drinks, snacks, and desserts. After recipes for eating and drinking she takes us around the house and ideas to change there, from mending clothing to making our own cleaning products. She includes recipes from dish soap to toothpaste. There is a chapter about taking care of yourself and connecting to nature, she includes stretches and breathing techniques that she uses. The final chapter is about doing, finding your people in climate change and your neighborhood. I found this book to have some good information and I think it’s a good place to start when you’re looking at making changes in your life.
I love all things SUSTAINABILITY.
Now when an actress, that I've loved for years, writes about her experiences & tips - you go running.
Go Gently was a just what the doctor ordered. Filled with life stories, tips, and ways to literally "go gently" into the next phase of your life is something everyone should live by and follow.
Bonnie Wright, I never knew you were so knowledgeable and had so much more than your acting gift to share with this world.
I will definitely be gifting this book to a few girlfriends this holiday season. BRAVO!
Go Gently: Actionable Steps to Nurture Yourself and the Planet gives readers ideas of how they can become involved in saving the planet. Bonnie Wright is a Greenpeace ambassador, using her position as a famous actress to educate people on the dangers of single use plastics and the like.
I am conflicted about this book, for the following reasons. The author does a good job of highlighting issues and concerns about the planet, as well as some actionable steps that people can take to help. Wright also explains how individuals can change their own practices to help the planet. The biggest, blaring "no" about this book is the fact that a climate activist would write a printed book in the first place. Deforestation is a big issue for the planet and Wright is not being a good activist by using trees to get her point across. The author also spends a lot of time interviewing fellow activists instead of writing her own view of how to nurture the planet.
Although this book gives some good tips about how to personally help the planet, I feel like this is more of a pet project by someone who has enough money to take up a cause. The book is interesting, but nothing I have not heard before. Go Gently may inspire some, so I would recommend it to those readers.
Disclaimer: I was given an Advanced Reader's Copy by NetGalley and the publisher. The decision to read and review this book was entirely my own.
This book is PACKED with helpful tips and tangible advice on how to live more sustainably. It starts with brief descriptions of key climate issues with easy to do action items. It then goes on to offer suggestions for how to shop make better choices while shopping (for food, clothes, etc), how to cook more sustainably (recipes included), how to properly store food to prolong it's life, how to make your own cleaners and body care products, and ways to connect with the planet.,
Thank you to Mariner Books and NetGalley for allowing me to read an advance copy of this book.
Another #HarryPotter actress published a book this year!
“Go Gently: Actionable Steps to Nurture Yourself and the Planet” by Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley in HP) came out in April 2022 ⤵️
The other book I reviewed a few weeks ago was by Evanna Lynch who played Luna Lovegood. Both of these two women have moved on from their stardom in the Harry Potter series to passion projects of activism, among other things. They have a shared interest in sustainability and the environment!
In this new book, Bonnie Wright is essentially sharing her lifestyle habits which she purports are practical and accessible. There is a lot packed into this book. You get everything from cooking recipes to yoga and back to climate science.
She shows tips for developing lifelong skills and knowledge that can help offset wastefulness and promote sustainability as well as independence. You can read about how to mend clothes, recycle, turn everyday products you may think are waste into something else useful. There are cost cutting tips as well, which lump into sustainability, like energy use, reusing or repurposing products, making things last longer etc.
The book is set up into multiple sections. It includes a primer on climate change + relevant science (outside sources provided), sustainable + climate responsible shopping, making your own products, cooking, exercise, organizing, prolonging your possessions, and the future of the climate movement.
There are also really cute charts included inside which serve as straightforward infographics you could refer to again and again. I think it would be cute for printables! I’ll post some in my story.
TLDR —- This book is published by @marinerbooks and out now. Good for those wanting to learn about the everyday swaps and tips for more environmentally friendly habits + the why/how in a very beginner friendly way. Wright refers to experts’ knowledge when appropriate and essentially is sharing her passion with us in this accessible collection. High quality photos + graphics. My favorite bits were the skills and repurposing / increasing longevity of possessions sections.
Climate movement is a real thing. And it’s disturbing the conditions we are facing without change. How we feel about plastic, landfill waste and fill in the blank.
This was a glimpse of our crisis. So what are we doing about it? Do we care? The author keeps it simple by laying out small ways to be apart of the answer. Nothing overwhelming. Actionable Steps she calls them.
I liked:
• The cliff notes on the problem
• Inventory tables
• Actionable steps
• Recipes 😋
She also interviewed people involved in some of the movements.
It’s possibly a educational book to buy for a friend. It’s minimalistic and makes you think.
Thanks Mariner Books via NetGalley.
Go Gently offers do-able and straightforward steps we can take to reduce our impact on the environment. As someone who truly believes the best approach to make a difference is on a very small, local scale, this book puts some fundamental tangible ideas into our hands. If we each commit to making some minor changes, little by little will add up.
The book is organized by moving through every room in her house, assessing products and some alternatives that are more environmentally friendly. This book is filled with great ideas. If you want to start going gently, this is an excellent resource.
I appreciate the soft voice with a clear message. Bonnie truly handles sustainable options without judgement. I love that she has suggestions for how to start small and ease your way in. She has done her work and her research and shares gladly in this handy resource. If you are interested in making some changes and not really sure where to start, there are some excellent suggestions provided. I like that this is a well-rounded approach from the principles to recipes.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.
Go Gently by Bonnie Wright leads the reader gently through the basics of leading a more sustainable life without the guilt or expectation that we can do “all the things”. The author allows us grace as we explore and begin the process of leading a greener life.
The book is an easy read, divided into manageable bites or chapters. I was please to confirm that I had some knowledge of the subject and surprised to discover some information that startled me. For instance, I had no idea that my unruly archive of email and electronically filed information could have an impact on the planet or that washing clothing constructed on man made fiber could release microscopic particles capable of harming our oceans. (I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy and all opinions are my own.). I highly recommend this book as a guide for beginning your sustainability journey.
LOVED this so much! So inspiring and informative! I feel like there is so much great information in here, especially for the beginner!
This was a truly wonderful read. I loved it. It was so beautifully written. Boonie Wright did a marvelous job!
What a lovely, easy-to-understand, common sense, insightful book to help us make better choices to keep the world cleaner and less toxic. I took lots of notes and appreciated the manner in which this valuable information was conveyed. I love the idea of taking a couple of ideas from this book and implementing them instead of feeling overwhelmed and giving up before you even start. It is a lovely, smart book that everyone will get something out of. Thanks to Harvest Books for the advanced copy. Loved it.
Are you looking for a way to live more sustainably, this book gives you actual steps and ideas about what you can do. I found this book very helpful and inspiring and this is definitely a book that I will go back to again and again.
I enjoyed this book because it is a gentle reminder of steps we can take to make a difference in our environment, community, home, and the world. It isn't judgmental, blaming, or intimidating, it is simple things that we can do to begin to think about what we bring into our homes, the impact, and even has some wonderful recipes to try. It makes us aware of things that many haven't thought about, we don't have to give up our way of life, but to make some changes. That I can do and while reading the book, I looked around my rooms and saw things I hadn't seen or thought about, and it made me begin to take some steps to make some changes.
Go Gently is a book that doesn't put you on the defense at the beginning, it opens your eyes, brain, and heart, so you are letting the information in.
I received an ARC from William Morrow, Mariner Books through NetGalley.
