Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.
Set in Lapland, Vicky has gone missing, and then found dead. Her parents and brother, Alex, are informed back in the UK. Alex immediately flies over to Lapland to find out exactly what happened to his sister. Once there, he finds out that other women have previously gone missing, and wonders if they’re all connected, and once he starts meeting the locals, he wonders who is involved.
This was a great read. Jo Spain always manages to write a cracking storyline with the best settings. The writing flowed really well, and was a great page turner. Alex was really relatable, and a brilliant character. I also liked the side story of the Police Chief, Agatha, and liked the fact that her story became entwined with the main story. Highly recommended.
A luxury resort. Three missing women. One body. The author wrote a story that was interesting and moved at a pace that kept me engaged. The characters were easy to invest in. Atmospheric, haunting and superbly plotted.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I very much enjoyed this this new thriller by Joe Spain, telling the tale of a grieving brother that is trying to solve the mystery of his sister’s demise at a luxury resort in Lapland. Surprising and twisty all the way!
See this is what you want in your psychological thrillers- perfect pacing, cleverly intriguing characters, a properly plotted mystery that doesn't rely on suspension of disbelief to deliver a finale and genuinely good writing. Its why I am and continue to be a huge fan of Jo Spain.
The Last To Disappear has that underlying addictive quality and the chilly setting just adds to the general sense of it beautifully. The character relationships and the evolving clues keep you turning those pages until the ultimate resolution which is entirely satisfying.
I loved this. Definitely recommend.
This book practically turns its own pages it’s so good. Jo Spains previous books have been good but this next step. Gorgeous! Have already told friends about how good this book is!
I love the way Jo Spain writes - I'm always eager to read her latest as I know I will be getting a well written book with an interesting plot. This one sounded great as I have a soft spot for books set abroad and I also love a murder mystery.
I enjoyed how many layers there were to the story, and whilst I had worked out parts of the mystery, others managed to surprise me. The setting was lovely and I enjoyed getting to know the characters. The story was interesting and well-written. Overall I really enjoyed it.
When Alex’s father asks him to do the seemingly impossible – travel to Lapland and collect his sister’s body – Alex isn’t prepared for the trip or what he discovers. Vicky was pulled from an icy lake close to where she worked as a tour guide in a luxury winter resort, yet another part of her life about which Alex knew nothing. Upon arriving in the cold, brutal weather, he meets Agatha Koskinen, who’s in charge of the case and who suspects that Vicky is unexpectedly involved in a series of investigations. Alex, desperate to find out what happened to his sister, and dealing with his own form of grief about lack of contact, finds an ally in Agatha, as they both set out to discover who’s to blame for Vicky’s demise – but also the disappearance of a trio of other women. The weather almost plays the role of another character, it’s so vividly described. Like any Jo novel, it’s brilliant, and it plays fair: the reader is given a chance to see if they can discover the culprit.
Thank you to Netgalley, Quercus and Jo Spain for this ARC in return for my honest review. Jo's story-telling has a way of drawing you in from the opening pages. The books different strands are cleverly weaved together. A real-page turner. This book deserves to be a huge hit.
This is the second Jo Spain novel I've read after loving her previous book The Perfect Lie. The Last to Disappear is set in Finland where British lobbyist Alex travels to following his sister Vicky's murder. Alex stays at the resort where his sister worked and alongside local chief of police Agatha is determined to find Vicky's murderer. I absolutely loved the Lapland setting of this novel and really felt immersed in it and finished the novel with a real desire to visit Finland. I found this to be a compelling read with good characterisation and I'd love to see Agatha return. My only criticism is that the pacing was a little slow but overall this is a good thriller that I would recommend.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this digital ARC.
When Alex Evans learns that his sister's body has been pulled from an icy lake in Northern Lapland, he travels there to find out what happened to her. He soon teams up with Agatha Koskinen, the detective in charge of the case. Alex discovers that there's a lot more going on in the small town of Koppe as he learns of the disappearance of three other women through the years.
This latest book by the wonderful Jo Spain is a standalone and Christmas week was an ideal time of year to read this book. I loved the setting in the small town of Koppe, a place thats dark and cold, a place where families visit Santa and skiers holiday. Throw in lots of snowy landscapes, bitterly cold temperatures, icy lakes, snowmobiles and reindeer and it's the perfect winter wonderland. However, it's an idyllic setting which is harbouring many dark secrets. The characters in the small town and holiday resort are well fleshed out and I loved Agathas character. The plot is excellently paced with many unexpected twists along the way.
This is sure to be a hugely popular read in 2022 for many Jo Spain fans. I loved it. My thanks to Netgalley and Quercus for an advanced copy.
I loved this book I lterally couldnt put it down. It gripped me right from the start and was engaging all the way through, it was completely captivating. it was tense and fast paced all the way through, full of twists and unpredictability, I couldnt guess what was happening or when. It was such an enjoyable read.
A stand alone thriller by the author of the Inspector Tom Reynolds series Jo Spain. I enjoyed this novel, well written, interesting characters and a fast paced plot.
Alex Evans is informed that his sister’s body has been pulled from an icy lake in Northern Lapland, he automatically assumes his irresponsible sister accidentally drowned. But when he arrives at the wealthy winter resort where Vicky worked as a tour-guide and meets the detective leading the case, Agatha Koskinen he suddenly realises that there is more to it. Together Agatha and Alex investigate Vicky’s death and begin to suspect that people in the small town are not telling the whole truth.
It becomes apparent that three other women have gone missing from the area in the past and that Vicky may have left tried to reach out to her brother Alex with a message.
I must read more of this author.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Quercus for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
