Loved the premise of this book, and did enjoy it, but it went a bit too heavy on the faux-gangster element, forcing the exaggerated story line to cause a lot of eye-roll moments! The main character was a gangster, the brother was affiliated with gangsters, the old residents of the house – all was just a little bit too convenient and unbelievable, which although enjoyable because it kept the energy high in the storyline, made you less invested! The ending seemed to wrap up super quickly in the last 5 or so chapters, and didn’t really match the pace of the rest of the book. Good amount of characters, and not predictable – allowed you to come to multiple different conclusions as the book went on, though I personally preferred the first half of the book, rather than the slightly OTT wild second half, but it’s great for crime / gangster genre fans!
This is the slowest book that I have read. Hardly anything ever happened. I didn’t like the writing style
Great plot to get yourself lost in. This book has everything. A real fast paced thriller. Will get your heart racing on more than one occasion. Very well written. Highly recommend this book
The violence was very graphic in this book. I found it to be a slow burner and I had trouble connecting with the book and its characters.
An interesting turn which reignited my interest but also made me hate the main character. Nevertheless an easy weekend read. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The dream home. The perfect nightmare...
Vonny and Seth dream of a place in the country, but they can barely scrape together a deposit for a flat. So when they enter a competition and win a huge, remote plot of land, they can't believe their luck. They start building the house of their dreams and look forward to a happy life together.
But then they discover an old suitcase – a suitcase filled with millions of pounds worth of heroin. Their idyllic existence comes crashing down around them. Because the original owner of the suitcase is coming for it... loved it! A very fast paced, action packed story with lots of craziness and suspense to keep you reading straight to the very end! Highly recommend!
This book was so good, really loved it, gripped me from the beginning to the end .. it shows how one’s dream home can become a nightmare and that one’s idyllic life can be turned upside down..
This book got its claws into me right fron the start and just didn't let go! I was literally staying up until 6am to find out more!!! Its the kind of book that you are dying to get through so that you have all the answers but, once you are finished, you're also devastated because you know you won't find a book as captivating, well written and intriguing as this one was, very easily. It's just the perfect thriller/ domestic noir type in my opinion. I couldnt have picked a bitter book to start my reading off in 2022. There are just so many twists and turns that you are literally kept on the edge of your seat all the way through. Its not gory but it casts such an ominous feeling when you're reading it and seems to just push buttons that will make anyones hair stand on end. This book will swallow you up and refuse to let you go til that last page. I'm now off to download the rest of the books ever written by Mr Black!!!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a free ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest voluntarily.
The information provided for this book describes it as a psychological thriller, but does not include any warning of the violence and criminal activity which feature heavily throughout the first quarter of the book. The words and phrases used in the narrative and by the characters do not feature in my experience of everyday language and the subject matter and plot were not as I expected. I gave up after 25%.
What starts off as a dream home for Seth and Vonny will soon turn into a nightmare. Unexpected visitors with one thing on their mind. This is a tour de force of a crime thriller. A slow start as we are getting to know the main characters then it takes off like a rocket. Packed with tension and suspense, plenty of heart in your mouth moments and an ending I never saw coming. This author has done it again and in my opinion one of his best. Loved it!!!
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.
Oh this book had such an incredible sense of terror and menace. My heart was in my mouth throughout. Brilliant suspense thriller. Loved it xx
Vonny & Seth can't believe their luck when they win a large area of land on which to build their dream home, £25 for a raffle entry brings them the site of their dreams. They are so happy, they don't wonder why such prime land would be offered in a raffle rather than sold to the highest bidder. When showing a young journalist around the property, they discover a map which leads to a car which had been hidden on their land, & later Seth finds a large quantity of heroin. Seth thinks this could be answer to his younger brother's gang problem, but someone else knows about the drugs & want them back.
This is my first experience of this author's writing but it won't be my last. I thought Vonny & Seth were written sympathetically even when they make questionable decisions. There were plenty of twists & turns to keep the plot moving along. For anyone who is sensitive to violence, there is quite a lot of graphic violence in the book, & the prologue is rather shocking & briefly involves animals - I wish I had been forewarned. I'm not really sure I can say I enjoyed it, but it was a compelling read, & the front cover draws the eye.
Thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Head of Zeus, for the opportunity to read an ARC.
A Sense Of Menace…
What happens when a couple’s dream home becomes a nightmare of monumental proportions? This particular couple, Vonny and Seth, already cannot believe how blessed they suddenly are when their luck comes in and they win a competition which enables a lifelong dream. Things, however, are about to take a very bad turn indeed. Compelling psychological suspense with an underlying sense of menace, credible characters and an intriguing storyline which maintains a grip until the, perhaps, unexpected denouement.
Wow what a book. Really enjoyed this, thank you Netgalley and Head of Zeus. What a thriller could not put this down. I would recommend this to anyone
