Scary Fairy in Wicked Wood is a great book filled with beautiful drawings. I really enjoyed it! Thank you for the ARC.
Scary Fairy in Wicked Wood is an adorable fairy tale. The drawings are picturesque, the prose is kid friendly, and the whole thing is just adorable.
All of a sudden things changed in the Wicked Woods, maybe it was Scary Fairy that caused the changes, thus she needs to leave. Scary Fairy was naughty, which was why everyone needs her to leave. "She wanted to jump barefoot in the moonlite puddles" this was a wonderful use for my imagination. Owl, Bear,Hedghog, Dormouse, and Squirrel are crochity neighbors, which they do not ike or understand Scary Fairy'quirkiness. The characters are a delight and I would love each one as a neighbor.I found each time I read them, iwas like peeling an onion, except for having tearful eyesI laughed with each layer. The character are just what I imagined.
Although this was a Middle Grade book. there was a complexity to the writing that made the novel a delight. Interesting it fely simular to reading a folktale, I believe it was that quality that makes the writing timelss.
I recieved an advanced copy from NetGalley, Kind Word Publishing, Jana Bauer in exchange for an honset review.
One day, Scary Fairy arrives in Wicked Wood. Immediately the little creature disturbs the peace among the animals of the forest : She discards Squirrel's hazelnuts to make her new bedroom and uses Hedgehog as a hair brush without even asking ! Really upset at first, the animals learn to know and love the newcomer, having extraordinary adventures.
I fell in love with this adorable book. Attracted by the cover and the title, I really enjoyed the story as well. Divided in eleven small chapters, it is an easy read that should enchant children. Scary Fairy in Wicked Wood has a 19e century atmosphere and reminds me of stories such as Peter Rabbit or Frog and Toad. The illustrations by Slovene children’s author Jana Bauer are breathtaking. I can spend hours looking at all the small details of the images.
I love the character of Scary Fairy. She first appears as a bad tempered child that doesn’t care about others. But the character rapidly evolves, as we understand that she is just sad and alone. Banished by her grandmother, she finds a new family among the animals.
The animals are all interesting characters, with their own unique personalities : Owl is very wise and does its best to counsel all the animals. Squirrel is always stressed and fears to lose its precious nuts. Hedgehog is grumpy and often in a bad mood. There are also Bear, Rabbit and her babies, Dormouse and many other small and big creatures in the wood.
Scary Fairy in Wicked Wood is a very sweet surprise and a perfect read for Springtime. After reading it, you may even look for a teapot and a balloon carried by the Southern Wind.

I didn't love this, nor did I dislike it. I was just okay with it. The illustrations were lovely, but the story overall annoyed me more than entertained me. The"scary fairy" was obnoxious and rude and borderline mean, the other animals [other than owl] are unaccpeting, even after the fairy makes peace and spend much of their time trying to run her out of town and the end was really unsatisfying.
This is definitely a book for older middle-graders and even then, only certain kids will get this and like it. Overall, it just wasn't for me. The best part was the gorgeous illustrations.
I am really rather disappointed with this one.
Thank you to NetGalley, Jana Bauer, Caroline Thaw [Illustrator], David Limon [Translator], and Kind World Publishing and Consulting, LLC for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Scary Fairy in Wicked Wood by Jana Bauer is a lovely fairytale Fable full of folksy illustrations and whimsies tales. I loved the muted, woodsy tones of the artwork and the animal characters were adorable and full of personality. This is a beautiful book that I would definitely add to any child's library. Thank you Netgalley for providing an ARC in return for an honest review.
I was given this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Scary Fairy is a short chapter book for established readers. This is one of those fun novels thst inckudes lots of wonderful illustrations. For me, I was more captivated by the interesting pictures. Such great art!
I did not want this collection of stories about Scary Fairy to end! I think many children (and adults like me!) will identify with Scary Fairy and the frustration of being different and misunderstood.
The relatable stories and whimsical illustrations are reminiscent of children's classics like Patricia Coombs' Dorrie The Little Witch and Astrid Lindgren's Pippi Longstocking. Each chapter stands on its own making it a perfect bedtime story with a chapter before bed.
My only complaint is the ending. It definitely wrapped up this series of stories, but I wasn't satisfied. I needed to know if there would be more stories or if this really was the end.
3.5/5 stars
This was a digital read for me, on my tiny screen the illustrations were lovely so I imagine that a print copy would really be nice. The colors are subtle enough to showcase the characteristics of this forest critter group.
Given the title Scary Fairy in Wicked Wood sets the stage for a little bit of a darker story with some mean spirited animals. Scary Fairy arrives creating mayhem and a stir among the rest of the forest inhabitants. The story progresses in chapter form with a variety of characters and events. It's perfect for a chapter a night bedtime story.
Scary Fairy is a whimsical story, funny at times and also might appeal to an older audience because of some angry critters.
My thanks to Kind World Publishing for a digital copy in exchange for a honest review.
Scary Fairy in Wicked Wood is a collection of short stories about a little wicked fairy who quite upsets the woods by moving in and causing general mayhem amongst the current animal inhabitants right from the get-go. But what each reader soon comes to realize is that little Scary Fairy isn't causing mayhem on purpose and many of the problems between her and her neighbors are the result of miscommunication, absence of empathy, or general xenophobia
Begging to be read aloud with funny voices, to younger children (or even older ones!), this collection of tales worms its way into your heart with lessons about communication, acceptance of those that are different, and kindness regardless of how you have been treated in the past. I love that after each story, there was an opportunity for discussion about how we should treat our neighbors and those we come across who may be a little different. Plus the stories were funny to boot, so win-win!
This was a cute chapter book about (make sure you say it in an announcer voice) Scary Fairy and what happens after she crashes into the Wicked Wood. I like that each story is separate and you won't feel like you are missing out if you only read one per night. I loved the ending, it was very sweet and I am hoping we will get to see Scary Fairy again in the future.

A little scary fairy reaches the Wicked Wood in her teapot balloon, bringing with her a whirlwind of changes and attitude. The hedgehog, dormouse, and squirrel are annoyed. But the wise Owl knows the reason. She helps the scary fairy become a friendly little thing in the Wicked Wood. Of course, the scary fairy has enough wit and attitude to keep the fun going, one way or another. The animals have different adventures as the seasons change. And one day, the scary fairy gets called back home. It’s no surprise that the animals of Wicked Wood are sad to see her leave.
This is a cute middle-grade story with beautiful illustrations in pastels. The storyline felt a little abrupt as scary fairy suddenly started to be good but then it settled and flowed well. The animals and scary fairy have some silly and some serious adventures that make the book interesting for kids.
I wasn’t prepared for this kind of ending. It’s a little bittersweet but suits the storyline. The story is pretty much similar to fables, folklores, and fairytales. The illustrations up the impact by another notch. The sketches are neat and still have a whimsical quality that brings a magical feeling to the story. There isn’t any magic as such, though I wish it did.
A few moral lessons are woven into the storyline and will make good discussion topics for kids. Overall, Scary Fairy in the Wicked Wood is a lighthearted story with a spunky main character and quirky animals.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and Kind World Publishing and Consulting, LLC, Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), Members' Titles and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book is wonderfully strange.
One day, flying off the fierce Southern Wind, Scary Fairy arrives in the Wicked Wood in nothing but a teapot hanging off a balloon. She’s pure trouble, doing as she pleases without realizing how her odd, impertinent actions affect others. Poor hedgehog will not stand being used as a hairbrush! But though Scary Fairy may ruffle some feathers, she actually fits in among the quirky, headstrong inhabitants of Wicked Wood. Together, they have grand adventures and learn true friendship as they embrace each other’s differences and grow from their mistakes.
I really enjoyed this collection of short stories. I was first drawn to the book by the fun illustrations, which continued to amuse me as I laughed through the random adventures of Scary Fairy and her new friends. The tales are whimsical, comical, and ultimately heartwarming. I particularly loved the dynamics between the scrappy Scary Fairy and the eccentric woodland creatures like the persnickety hedgehog and the foolish squirrel. While different, and sometimes dark, these are delightful bedtime stories for the young and old.
Thank you, Kind World Publishing and Consulting and Jana Bauer, for the opportunity to review.
"Sadness, silence, despair and many other such things descended upon Wicked Wood." -From Scary Fairy in Wicked Wood

This is sort of hard to rate. The illustrations are what drew me in, and they remain adorable throughout the book. We follow a fairy in several stories during her time in Wicked Wood. But I wouldn't say this book was appropriate for children, that is an inaccurate label unless they were quite older; maybe middle grade. Many characters call each other "stupid", and tobacco and guns are mentioned. The word "damn" is used, and there are some depressing scenes. Some lines seemed to get lost in translation, like "She is a potty".
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was a story about Scary Fairy and her banishment from her family. She arrives in Wicked Wood and the shenanigans begin.
The short stories that are in this book are perfect for a bedtime reading session. I found the characters loveable and the illustrations were stunning! The stories were appropriate for any age level and flowed decently from chapter to chapter. At times, I feel the stories fell apart a little in their plot but usually tied together by the end of the chapter.
Overall, a really sweet book about meeting new people, kindness and friendship.
Lovely book! Enjoyed this one tremendously. Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this little gem.
Ok this book was a little dark for a children’s book in my opinion, but I highly enjoyed reading it. The story makes sense since it’s set in the Wicked Wood and some of the animals that live there can be pretty mean and spiteful and petty. Scary Fairy was also quite a character with her attitude, but she just seemed a bit oblivious with how mean she could come across as sometimes. She had kind intentions sometimes but the animals were very skeptical and tending to believe the worst of her, except for Owl. Hedgehog was such a little meanie, but considering that they were Scary Fairy’s haribrush, it was slightly understandable lol. The ending was very satisfying and leaves things open for Scary Fairy to return and have more adventures. Even though this had a darker plot for a children’s story, I surprisingly enjoyed it and think kids will too.
